Twelve essential oils that fight cancer and boost immunity

One-third of American’s are seeking alternative medicine for either their sole medical treatment or for complementary medical treatment.  People are often incorporating vitamins, fish oil, probiotics, melatonin, deep breathing, yoga, or chiropractic care into their natural health arsenal.  It appears that natural health care trends are only projected to keep growing. (1)

One-third of Americans are seeking alternative medicine

The organic food market is expected to grow 14 percent between the years of 2013-2018 and the global essential oil market is expected to reach 11.67 billion dollars by 2022. (2,3)

Essential oils have been utilized in numerous cultures for decades to help remedy disease.  Essentials oils may have gained their appeal through their pleasant scents but will maintain their longevity due to research and the growing demand for alternative medicine.

Different varieties of Frankincense oil found to kill bladder cancer, breast cancer and skin cancer cells

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences found that different types of frankincense oils are effective at killing cancer cells.  Boswellia carteri has been found to target cancerous cells in bladder tumors, killing them and leaving healthy cells alone.  Boswellia sacramay is thought to be effective in breast cancer prevention as well as for advanced breast cancers.  Boswellia sacrais is an effective and non-invasive treatment for basal cell carcinoma. Boswellia carteri and Santalum album both kill cancer cells in different ways, when combined they form a strong alliance to annihilate cancer. (4)

Twelve essential oils that help fight cancer, boost immunity and improve health and well-being

Frankincense oil is not the only effective oil for cancer.  Consider adding the following 12 oils to your collection in order to boost your immune system and help your body fight infection and disease.

  1. Black Pepper: Use for asthma, sinus congestion, chronic indigestion, cold,  respiratory infections, obesity, improper metabolism, urinary problems, cholera, headache, intermittent fever, toxic remains in the system, and cancer. (5)

  2. Cinnamon: Eighty studies have investigated cinnamaldehyde’s ability to inhibit tumor cell death and cancer cell apoptosis. (6)

  3. Clove: Clove oil contains 30x more anti-oxidants than blueberries which helps reduce free radical damage. (7)

  4. Oregano: Oregano’s active ingredient, carvacrol, shown to have anti-tumor effects on metastatic breast cancer cells. (8)

  5. Cardamom:  Cardamom essential oil shows to have chemopreventative and anti-tumor effects. (9)

  6. Fennel: Fennel contains terpenoid anethole, which has both estrogenic and chemopreventive effects. (10)

  7. Frankincense: Kills bladder cancer, breast cancer, and skin cancer cells. (4)

  8. Clary Sage: Clary Sage contains sclareol which has anticancer effects against breast cancer cells. (11)

  9. Melaleuca (Tea Tree): Tea tree oil was found to fight non-melanoma skin cancer in mice. (12)

  10. Helichrysum: Studies show that helichrysum oil lowers inflammation, fights against free radical damage and has corticoid-like effects. (13)

  11. Rosemary: One study concluded that a 1 percent rosemary essential oil was able to deactivate more than 90 percent of ovarian and liver cancer cells. (14)

  12. Thyme:  A 2010 study found that thyme oil was effective against breast cancer, lung cancer,a nd prostate cancer cells. (14)

Seeking out a licensed aromatherapist or medical practitioner can help you better understand how to use essential oils, their purposes and how they can promote your own personal well-being.

Boost your mood with Saffron – Mother Nature’s Prozac

More and more people suffer from depression today than ever before. Reports reveal that 1 in 10 US adults say they are suffering from depression and by 2020, depression is anticipated to be the world’s second-leading cause of disability. Negative side effects and dangers of psychiatric medications are two main drawbacks to conventional treatment programs for depression. Also, they do not often work. In fact, about 90% of patients endure at least one of the many serious side effects from these medications.

Therefore, natural healthcare providers and their patients are looking for a safer way to fight mood disorders. Saffron is a popular natural depression treatment. In fact, it seems to be as effective as common antidepressant pills like Prozac and Imipramine but without the adverse side effects.

This fascinating spice has been used to treat more than 90 diseases over 4,000 years. Saffron is the most costly spice in the world. Price estimates range from $ 1,000 to $ 5,000 per pound. The cost is extraordinary because it takes about 80,000 crocus flowers and a quarter million dried stigmas to deliver one pound of saffron. Moreover, the harvesting is not easy as well. It is done entirely by hand during just one to three weeks a year.

Saffron as Natural Antidepressant:

In traditional Persian medicine, saffron is used for depression. Several studies state that saffron relieves many psychiatric conditions.
Iranian researchers say that saffron may work in the same way that many antidepressants do. Two compounds in saffron (safranal and crocin) protect levels of several brain chemicals that boost and stabilize mood. These compounds may exert anti-depressant effects by keeping balanced levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Chinese scientist concluded that crocin was the active compound and should be considered as new plant substance for curing depression.

The Latest 2014 review of studies examined 14 studies which used saffron as an anti-depressant. Human studies show there is a benefit to both anxiety and depression.
In one study, researchers studied 40 people with mild to moderate depression divided into two groups; one took saffron (15mg x2 daily), the other fluoxetine (Prozac). As a result, after two months, saffron was as effective as Prozac.

In another study from Iran, one group took 30mg of saffron daily; the other received a placebo. After 6-weeks, the ‘saffron group’ had much lower score on the standard test for depression.
Another study saw an even stronger anti-depressant effect of this spice.
Saffron was even compared to a tricyclic antidepressant imipramine (Tofranil) and was shown to be just as effective as the drug and without the negative side effects.

”Findings from clinical trials conducted to date indicate that saffron supplementation can improve symptoms of depression in adults with major depression.”
”Findings from initial clinical trials suggest that saffron may improve the symptoms and the effects of depression, anxiety, premenstrual syndrome, sexual dysfunction, and infertility.”

More Uses and Benefits:

  • Sexual Dysfunction (Studies show that saffron is effective in treating erectile dysfunction).

  • Macular Degeneration (A study from Australian and Italian researchers shows that it helps slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration and improves vision; also, it prevents retinal damage in animal studies).

  • Pancreatic Cancer Stem Cells (Researchers found that crocetinic acid inhibited the growth of human pancreatic cancer cells).

  • Alzheimer’s Disease (Saffron is as effective as the Alzheimer drug donepezil based on studies).

  • Metabolic Syndrome (Saffron may significantly reduce the symptoms of metabolic syndrome).

  • PMS (A study found saffron relieves symptoms of premenstrual syndrome).

  • Menstrual Cramps (Significant reduction).

  • Atherosclerosis

  • Infertility (from Urology Journal – 50mg of saffron daily for three months, result: percentage of normally shaped sperm rose by 21%).

  • Multiple Sclerosis (Pakistan researchers state that saffron may be potentially useful for the treatment of MS).

  • Parkinson’s (Crocetin, a compound isolated from saffron is helpful in preventing Parkinsonism and has therapeutic potential in fighting this neurological disorder).

  • Anxiety and Insomnia (In animal study, scientist found that saffron reduced anxiety-like activity and increased total sleep time).

  • Memory loss (Saffron improved memory in animals – Findings from Behavioral Brain Research).

  • Cancer (Researchers reviewed more than 30 studied on saffron and cancer and concluded that it may have potential to prevent and treat certain forms of cancer).

  • Weight Loss (A 2010 study published by Elsevier found that taking saffron could help people control their compulsive eating – significant reduction in their snacking).

  • Some More Possible Uses And Benefits: Inflammation, Stomach Problems, Pain Relief, Diabetes, Heart Health, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Potent Antioxidant, Asthma, Cough

Safety, Side Effects and Dosing:

Consuming saffron in higher doses can be dangerous.
For the treatment of mild to moderate depression and in premenstrual syndrome 30 mg daily in two divided doses is effective. Doses of up to 1.5 g per day of saffron appears to be safe; saffron poisoning symptoms appear after you take more than 5 g in a single dose; it may be lethal if taken as a 10-20 g dose.
Also, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid intake of saffron. As always, consult a medical professional or qualified herbalist before adding a powerful new component like this to your herbal regimen.

Conclusion:

Remember, that in spite of saffron benefits, high doses can be potentially dangerous – you do not need much. Just a pinch is all you need for most dishes.
Avoid the ‘powder form’ and look for the complete stigmas or threads. The powders are often mixed with poor quality or other spices like turmeric. Saffron fakes are also quite common so be sure to get a genuine one.
If you would like to try saffron for depression, please talk to your doctor before changing or trying anything new. It would be best to work with a natural medicine practitioner who is well-educated on using herbals alongside medications.

Half of £2bn boost for NHS "spent outside health service"

Health chiefs spent about half of the £2bn of extra cash allocated in George Osborne’s pre-2015 election autumn statement on buying care from private and other non-NHS providers, an analysis has shown.

The Health Foundation research for the Financial Times showed £901m was spent on buying services from outside the health service in 2015/16 for care provided free at the point of use for NHS patients. It compared with £800m spent on purchasing the same kind of care from NHS trusts.

In his 2014 autumn statement, the former chancellor described the money for NHS England as a “down-payment on the NHS’s own plan” and said it would go towards frontline services.

The report also found that £1 in every £8 of local commissioners’ budgets in England is now spent on care provided by non-NHS organisations. The Health Foundation said the figures showed NHS providers have not had the capacity to deal with rising demand.

Anita Charlesworth, director of research and economics at the Health Foundation, said: “Rising demand for emergency care meant that NHS providers haven’t had the capacity to deliver planned care and patients had to be diverted outside the NHS. NHS hospitals were left squeezed by sharply rising drug and staff costs with little additional funding. The result was big deficits that had to be covered by raids on investment budgets.

“The NHS urgently needs to look at how to ensure additional funds reach NHS providers. The health service needs to plan better for emergency demand, fund emergency care fairly and make sure it gets the best possible price for care provided outside the NHS.”

The Department of Health said the report showed the NHS was judging how best to deliver care and and spends less than 10% of its budget on independent providers. A spokesman said: “This report simply shows the NHS is making clinical judgments about delivering high-quality care for patients – the truth is that for many years the independent sector has made a contribution to helping the NHS meet demand, now amounting to less than eight pence in every pound the NHS spends.”

Lib Dems call for 1p income tax rise to provide NHS funding boost

Income tax should be increased by 1p to deliver a £4.6bn boost to the struggling NHS while a long-term funding solution is found, the former Liberal Democrat health minister Norman Lamb has said.

As the Lib Dems seek to woo traditional Labour voters and win back public trust, after being reduced to just nine MPs, Lamb will urge his party’s spring forum this weekend to back higher taxes to pay for health and social care.

“You have to be straight with the public about what you say you will raise and then do it,” he told the Guardian, in the wake of a government U-turn over the national insurance contributions rise that was proposed by Philip Hammond in last week’s budget.

He would like to see income tax increased by 1p immediately while a new system is phased in. Lamb has asked a committee of health experts to make recommendations, but he suggests rebranding national insurance and earmarking it for health and social care is likely to be his preferred solution.

“You can have a mature discussion about why this is necessary,” Lamb said. “The bottom line is: it comes down to our loved ones. That hour of need when there is that real anxiety that there may be a cancer and you are not sure if you will get treated on time – that is something most people will find intolerable. That stake we all have in a system that works properly is very powerful.”

Lamb leads a cross-party group of Lib Dem, Labour and Conservative MPs, including the chair of the health select committee, Sarah Wollaston, who recently met the prime minister and pressed her to put the funding of the NHS and social care on a more sustainable footing.

Theresa May has agreed the group can consult her health adviser, Dr James Kent – a former medical doctor turned management consultant. Lamb said he will make the case for a cross-party investigation, lasting roughly a year, into long-term reforms.

Though Lamb said he ultimately believed the solution to the health crisis would be found in cross-party collaboration, he said his party had to be “audacious” with their own policy proposals, “because if we don’t, we’re nothing, there’s no point to us”.

He said Labour had failed to say where it would find the money to fund the NHS more generously, despite its leader, Jeremy Corbyn, regularly making the issue a key theme at prime minister’s questions.

“They are crushed by caution because this is difficult and they are worried about saying people will pay more tax under Labour,” Lamb said. “That is everybody’s fear about Labour, that they will expect everyone to pay loads more tax. So they, the leadership, resort to shouting.”

Norman Lamb MP.

Though he stressed his support for the NHS as a tax-funded health system, Lamb said it was an “uncomfortable truth” that European social insurance models had kept better pace with demand.

“In Germany they just put the premium up and it doesn’t feel the same as increasing tax,” he said. “I think a dedicated health and social care tax, independently assessed, would work as a hybrid, a tax-funded health system which you see going into the care system.”

Lamb, who has devised the new proposals with a panel of health advisers including David Nicholson, the former chief executive of NHS England, will also propose an “OBR for mental health” to make independent assessments either once a year or the start of a parliament, of the funding the health service needs.

That approach would echo George Osborne’s creation of the Office for Budget Responsibility, which checks the Treasury’s economic forecasts and tax and spending plans.

The MP admitted that any new system would take several years to implement and that tax rises would be necessary in the interim. “My view is that we as a party should make the case for a 1p increase in income tax, raising about £4.6bn,” he said. “That would make a massive difference.”

Lamb said the extra funds raised should be ringfenced for health and social care, with an emphasis on investment on prevention, particularly in digitisation of systems. “It’s unbelievable we still have faxes flying around the NHS,” he said.

Other priorities should be improving general practice and investing in social care – giving people better treatment at home rather than deterioration, which results in hospital admissions, he said.

The Treasury has traditionally been sceptical about hypothecation – the practice of earmarking the revenue from particular taxes for one purpose. But former permanent secretary Nick Macpherson recently advocated five-year budgets for healthcare, paid for by a dedicated tax.

The Lib Dem vote collapsed in the 2015 general election, after the party joined the Conservatives in coalition and broke a manifesto pledge not to increase tuition fees.

The leader, Tim Farron, hopes his party can make a comeback as the champion of pro-remain voters, but believes it must be upfront about the need to raise taxes.

Lamb, who has been a vigorous campaigner for mental health during his time in politics and as a health minister during the coalition, has spoken out about his family’s struggles to get swift treatment for his son’s mental illness.

Archie Lamb, who subsequently founded a music label that launched the careers of stars including rapper Tinchy Stryder, had obsessive compulsive disorder and the family paid for private treatment after being told the waiting list for the NHS would be too long.

“If you can pay, you’re not going to watch your child deteriorate, but there are families who can’t pay and I can’t tolerate that,” he said. “That’s what makes me very driven. I came across so many cases as a minister where families are desperate and being completely let down by the system, with teenage girls with eating disorders told their BMI wasn’t low enough, so basically go away and get sicker.

“It is morally wrong and economically stupid but this is happening in our country and we have to confront it.”

10 Tips: Boost Serotonin Levels Naturally & Feel Happier

Millions are Diagnosed with depression every year,  and it is time we begin feeling happier without relying on medication.

As defined by psychologists, a person has a major depressive episode when he or she has symptoms of major depressive disorder, including depressed mood or feelings of emptiness, hopelessness or irritability, that last for two weeks or more.  And, according to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) found that the number of people diagnosed with depression has increased by 450% since 1987. It is often recommended that we start taking a medication to reduce symptoms. However, medication often comes with sometimes dangerous side-effects. Here are some simple ways to feel happier without needing to take a pill.

1. Get enough vitamin B6 – foods like spinach, turnip greens, garlic, cauliflower, mustard greens, celery, fish (especially tuna, halibut, salmon, cod and snapper), poultry (chicken and turkey) and lean beef tenderloin.

2. Eat brain boosting seed grains instead of wheat. This includes: Amaranth, buckwheat, millet and quinoa are seeds with grain-like taste and properties. These are healthy, high-protein carbohydrates and small amounts of the right carbohydrates are critical to boosting serotonin.

Not only improve mood, you will Sleep better too. A nice dose of serotonin in the early evening will help you sleep better at night.

These grain-like seeds also provide important B vitamins. As just mentioned B vitamins play a critical role in brain health and in the manufacture of all your neurotransmitters including serotonin.Vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B6 (pyridoxine) as well as vitamin D, folic acid and selenium plus calcium, and magnesium are needed to make serotonin.

For protein meals: focus on digestion and food combining – Eating foods that are high in protein – and specifically have a higher percentage of tryptophan (like turkey, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds), will provide much needed tryptophan, the precursor to serotonin. But beware: because research shows that eating protein with carbohydrates actually works against your ability to make serotonin.

Good to know: Plant based protein helps to create more serotonin than animal protein does.

To boost your mood and immunity naturally, protein and probiotics – is the delicious natural answer!

3. Include fermented foods and drinks in your diet – Fermented foods and drinks greatly assist in digestion and assimilation of all the important nutrients you need for serotonin. Additionally, they boost the nutrients in your food by at least a hundred fold.

4. Get massages and other forms of body work – We’ve heard about the healing power of touch, but now research backs it up! A study conducted by the Touch Research Institutes at the University of Miami School of Medicine shows that massage increases serotonin by 28% and decreases cortisol (the stress hormone) by 31%.

5. Have fun in the sun. Early morning sunlight is more intense and this can boost your body’s production of melatonin in the evening. Serotonin converts to melatonin for a great night’s sleep. Getting outside for a 20-minute walk in the early morning sunlight can boost your mood and improve your sleep!

6. Remove toxins from your life that interfere with brain health. Eat foods like dandelion and citrus fruit to help detox daily.

7. Reduce Stress – prolonged physical or emotional stress produce adrenaline and cortisol, which interfere with serotonin. Shifting your lifestyle and adding more relaxation into your week can make a huge difference. Focus on Emotional Healing – Reducing stress and focusing on spending more time relaxing is a first step to boosting serotonin. You can take this even further by taking action in key areas to remove negative emotions like fear, guilt and anger. Meditate & do yoga!

8. Exercise. A comprehensive review of the relation between exercise and mood concluded that antidepressant and anxiolytic effects have been clearly demonstrated. In the United Kingdom the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, which works on behalf of the National Health Service and makes recommendations on treatments according to the best available evidence, has published a guide on the treatment of depression.

9. Eliminate processed sugar (or at least drastically reduce it) – If you have low serotonin, you may have intense cravings for sugar. This is your body’s way of trying to increase serotonin because eating sugar produces insulin, which helps tryptophan go into your brain. However, too much sugar can eventually cause addiction to sugar, insulin resistance, hypoglycemia and type 2 diabetes.

Instead, satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy way with pure maple syrup, coconut sugar or pure honey.

10. Give more hugs, love more and fear less.

PM to unveil measures to boost mental healthcare provision

Theresa May is set to announce major government action to improve support for people struggling with mental illness, including moves to help troubled young people and reduce the number of suicides.

In a rare speech on domestic policy on Monday, the prime minister will pledge that the whole of government will do more to improve the care received by the one in four people every year who develop anxiety, depression or other related conditions.

She will also detail how employers can play a much bigger role in helping staff who are forced to take time off work as a result of mental health problems. She is also finalising plans to outline steps schools can take to better identify and help the growing number of pupils who are becoming mentally vulnerable, sometimes as a result of sexting, bullying and pressure to do well in exams.

May’s move will be the climax of a concerted attempt by the prime minister, starting this weekend, to show that she is determined to make progress on the social justice agenda that she described on her first day in Downing Street as the “burning injustices” in society. “If you suffer from mental health problems, there’s not enough help to hand,” she said.

The prime minister has been interested in mental illness and its consequences since learning during her six years as home secretary how much police time is taken up dealing with the issue and the very high number of prisoners who have serious psychological or psychiatric conditions.

Mental health charities have praised May’s record on the subject, which included a big drop in the number of people in acute distress who are put in a police cell to undergo an assessment of their mental state because there is no other available “place of safety” nearby.

The speech will be her first on health, an area in which opponents have criticised her over her claim to be giving the NHS £10bn extra funding by 2020 and deteriorating NHS waiting times for A&E and cancer care and planned operations.

A key element will be an announcement of new measures to reduce the number of people taking their own lives. The number of suicides across the UK fell from 6,232 in 2013 to 6,122 in 2014. Although the rate of of suicide among men is going down, it is rising among women, although 45- to 59-year-olds of both sexes are the likeliest to take their own life.

Opposition MPs urged the premier to use Monday’s speech, in central London, to unveil meaningful plans to end long waits for mental health treatment and ensure patients did not become so unwell that they ended up in mental health crisis.

“Now is the time for the prime minister to demonstrate that the government’s actions match the rhetoric”, said Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb, who was the mental health minister in the coalition until 2015.

“Now they must end the intolerable discrimination which exists within the NHS. We can no longer tolerate people with mental ill health having to wait interminably for treatment or getting no treatment at all”, he added.

May should bring in maximum waiting times for mental health treatment to match those that already exist for physical health, such as A&E treatment, and make mental health a personal priority of her time in power, as her predecessor David Cameron did with dementia, he said.

Luciana Berger, a member of the House of Commons health select committee and president of the Labour campaign for mental health, said: “The inadequacy of our mental health services is one of the most perilous challenges our NHS and country faces. It can only be solved by tangible change felt in every school, workplace and community.

“It is vital that the prime minister breaks the tradition of broken promises which has so far characterised her party’s approach to mental health. The focus needs to be on early intervention and prevention – services which have been savagely cut since 2010”, she added.

Downing Street officials have been examining how to help schools cope with mental ilness. Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, favours a system, being trialled in 225 schools in 22 parts of England, under which schools can seek advice from an expert working locally in NHS children and adolescent mental healthcare and ensure that pupils get seen more quickly. No 10 has also been looking at overhauling teacher training so that trainees are better able to spot telltale signs of distress and has been advised to ensure mental health is included on the secondary school curriculum to help prepare pupils for confronting what some experts say is an epidemic among under-18s.

May is expected to highlight the damaging role social media can have on young people’s mental welfare. Officials have been exploring potential curbs on the problem. Hunt recently called on mobile phone companies and firms such as Facebook and Twitter to stop under-18s sending sexually explicit images, including setting up parental blocks on their child’s account.

May’s speech will in part be the government’s formal response to the 58 recommendations made last year by NHS England’s mental health taskforce. She will acknowledge that many different departments have a key role to play in improving mental health, including the Department of Work and Pensions (welfare benefits), Ministry of Justice (offenders) and Department for Education (schools), not just the Department of Health and NHS, and pledge better pan-Whitehall action.

Mental health experts are keen to see if May accepts the taskforce’s plea for the Cabinet Office and Department of Health to create a body to provide “cross-government oversight” of how much progress ministers are making on improving care.

Privately, specialists in the field recalled the creation under Cameron on a Cabinet committee to oversee mental health policy, which was disbanded soon afterwards. One leading figure, who asked not to be named, said: “This focus on mental health is welcome and there’s potential for Theresa May to lead on mental health in a way no other prime minister has done. But is there something big she can do to help schools or is that just talk? And can she change the benefits system to help people, or is that just window dressing?”.

May will not announce any extra mental health funding beyond the £1bn extra for the sector generally and separate £1.4bn for children and young people’s care, both due to arrive by 2020. One Whitehall source with knowledge of the speech said: “This isn’t about providing new money. It’s about re-evaluating what the priorities in mental health are.”

Facebook break can boost wellbeing, study suggests

Taking a break from Facebook can boost emotional wellbeing and life satisfaction, with the effects particularly pronounced among people who “lurk” on the social network without actively engaging with others, a study suggests.

The research, by the University of Copenhagen, showed the effects of quitting for a week were also strong among heavy users and those who envied their Facebook friends, suggesting people who pore irritably over the posts of others may benefit the most.

Report author Morten Tromholt, from the university’s sociology department, said the findings suggested that changes in behaviour – for example, heavy users reducing their time spent on Facebook, or lurkers actively engaging – could yield positive results.

But he indicated that people could find it difficult to change their behaviour – 13% of the study’s participants who were supposed to be taking a break admitted to using the social network – and so quitting may be necessary.

The study, published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, involved 1,095 people, 86% of whom were women. They were randomly assigned to two groups: one which continued using Facebook as normal and one which stopped using the social network for a week.

On average, the participants were aged 34, had 350 Facebook friends and spent just over an hour a day on the social network, which had 1.79 billion monthly active users in the third quarter of this year.

Questionnaires conducted at the beginning and end of the week indicated that taking a break from the site increased life satisfaction and positive emotions. The effects of quitting were found to be greater among heavy users, passive users and those who envied others on the social network. There was no positive effect of taking a break for light users.

Tromholt wrote: “To make things clear, if one is a heavy Facebook user, one should use Facebook less to increase one’s well-being. And if one tends to feel envy when on Facebook, one should avoid browsing the sections (or specific friends) on Facebook causing this envy. And if one uses Facebook passively, one should reduce this kind of behaviour.

“Due to habits, practicalities … it may be difficult to change one’s way of using Facebook. If this is the case, one should consider quitting Facebook for good.”

Previous studies have had mixed results on the link between Facebook use and wellbeing. Some have garnered similar findings, but others have found no link and some have even found that time spent on the social network can boost wellbeing.

Brenda Wiederhold, editor-in-chief of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, said: “This study found that ‘lurking’ on Facebook may cause negative emotions. However, on the bright side … previous studies have shown actively connecting with close friends, whether in real life or on Facebook, may actually increase one’s sense of wellbeing.”

Tromholt suggested future studies should investigate the effect of quitting Facebook for a greater length of time and look at other social networks, including Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter.

Men’s Health: Top Tips to Boost Stamina and Energy

Tap into proven sources of stamina and drive, and energy to go through daily activities with vigor.

If you’re starting to suffer from bad mood and aching body more than you used to, then you might be lacking in energy. While going through your heavy daily grind can be physically stressful, the strain could be lessened if you have more stamina. Luckily, there are a lot of ways to rev your engines. Here is a list of the most effective ways to do it:

  1. Take enough magnesium.

Magnesium is a mineral that’s usually found in the organs, tissues, and bones. According to Rachel Meltzer, a nutritionist, when the body does not have enough of the mineral, it will need more oxygen, especially during an exercise. Thus, you get tired more easily.

If you want to avoid it, you need to keep quick energy boosting foods in hand. Foods rich in magnesium include nuts, almonds, soybeans, cashews, and spinach. With increased level of magnesium, you can also remedy any chronic sleeping problem. In other words, you can sleep more and re-energize your body better and faster. For better results, you might want to pair magnesium-rich foods with calcium.

  1. Fill up on fat.

While it’s true that excessive fat is highly unhealthy, keeping it all from your diet can result in a decrease in your testosterone levels, thus draining your energy and stamina. One study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine has revealed that those who consumed more fat have higher testosterone levels.

You must be wary of unhealthy fats, however. Maintain your T level without compromising your heart by taking monounsaturated fats. Foods high with this kind of fats include fish and nuts. For better results, pair intake of fats with continuous exercise.

  1. Don’t stress yourself.

Any form of stress can quickly exhaust your energy. When you’re stressed, cortisol will surge. As a result, the body’s ability to produce testosterone is suppressed. Tiredness comes naturally. To fight stress, you must take enough sleep. Cardio can also help tame the tension in your body. For mental stress, you can try doing meditation. It will relieve your mind from anxiety and help you relax.Boost Stamina

  1. Exercise and get your Vitamin D.

Staying and exercising indoors are not enough to boost your Vitamin D, a vitamin that you can naturally get from the sun. A study published in Environmental Science & Technology stated that exercising under natural light, specifically outdoors, can lead to feelings of revitalization, lesser tension, positive engagement, and increased energy. Thus, don’t hesitate to take at least a 10-minute walk outdoors.

  1. Take the right supplements.

Sometimes, eating food rich in vitamins and minerals is not enough. In which case, you take supplements. For boosting stamina, energy, and drive, you can take Test-FX testosterone booster, one of the few approved and proven medicines to increase your T levels.

Conclusion

Don’t limit yourself. If there are things you want to accomplish, make sure that you accomplish all of them. Take your stamina and energy to another level by following the tips given above.

Progress on malaria deaths at risk without big boost in funding, UN warns

Real progress in driving down infections and deaths from malaria will be at risk if substantially more funding is not forthcoming, according to the latest annual report on the epidemic.

Last year, more than 400,000 people (pdf) – mostly small children and pregnant women – died from malaria. Insecticide-impregnated bed nets to sleep under and effective drug treatments have brought the number of deaths down by nearly 30% worldwide in the five years from 2010 to 2015; the number of new cases over the same period is down by more than 20%. But the report, published by the World Health Organisation, shows there are substantial gaps in the coverage.

Some countries such as Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan have eliminated malaria and the WHO says the target of elimination in ten countries by 2020 will be met. Last year at least ten countries had 150 cases or fewer and nine more had between 150 and 1,000.

But the task of reducing the toll of malaria in the heavily endemic countries of sub-Saharan Africa, which have 90% of cases and 92% of deaths, is hard and needs more resources, says the report.

“We are definitely seeing progress,” said Dr Pedro Alonso, director of the WHO Global Malaria Programme. “But the world is still struggling to achieve the high levels of programme coverage that are needed to beat this disease.”

On the positive side, more children are being tested to determine whether they have malaria, so that the treatment is effective, and more pregnant women are being given drugs to prevent them getting malaria.

But an estimated 43% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa was not protected by nets or indoor spraying to kill the mosquitoes that transmit the disease last year. A third of the children with fever in 23 African countries were not taken to a health facility where they could be tested and appropriately treated.

While funding went up steeply between 2000 and 2010, it has flatlined for the last five years. It is estimated that $ 6.4bn (£5bn) per year is needed to keep the global malaria elimination efforts on target in 2020, but in 2015 it was only $ 2.9bn, or 45%. A third of that is provided by the governments of countries where malaria is endemic. Last year the US contributed 35% of the total and the UK put in 16%. The report says that substantially more money is needed both from international donors and from the affected countries.

“If this flatlining remains, we will not be able to achieve the ambitious goals and targets the world agreed on a year ago,” said Alonso. In 2015, the World Health Assembly adopted a global technical strategy for malaria, with milestones every five years until 2030. It calls for a 40% reduction in malaria cases between 2015 and 2020. Only 40 of the 91 countries with endemic malaria are on track to achieve that.

People often do not realize that they have the key to more energy right in their own homes. So get to the kitchen and see what you can find. There is no need to go through your days half asleep.

Take one or two tablespoons of coconut oil and add it to your morning smoothie. It will give you more energy and even give your drink a more tropical flavor.

While most people’s go-to beverage of choice for a burst of energy is coffee, a cup of green tea can actually have the same effect without the dreaded caffeine crash that usually comes a few hours later. It has a mild flavor and is nowhere near as bitter as the alternative beverage of choice. It also helps with digestion while too much coffee can actually do damage to the lining of your stomach. Green tea contains only a small amount of caffeine with an abundance of antioxidants. This combination will wake you up while providing your body with the essential nutrients it needs to keep going. Add a little honey to your tea for a little extra sweetness.

Just Breathe

You do not even need to leave the room for this remedy. Studies have shown that increasing the amount of oxygen into the body can fight fatigue and increase overall awareness. Rather than reaching for an energy drink, just take a few deep breaths and see how you feel. To fully benefit from your increased oxygen intake, start with diaphragmatic breathing, otherwise known as breathing from your belly. First, lie on your back and place your hands on the lower part of your midsection. Take slow, deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Do this for about ten minutes every time you feel like you need a pick-me-up.

Magnesium

This chemical element is responsible for breaking down glucose into energy. If you often find yourself feeling tired or sluggish, consider consuming more foods and drinks with higher levels of magnesium. In general, women should intake about 300 mg of magnesium every day while men should take about 350 mg. Some popular and tasty foods to consider almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, whole grain or bran cereals, and halibut. Giving yourself the correct amount of magnesium will make you feel awake and alert and give you an overall sense of well-being.

Drink More Water

Taking it into account that it is one of the most accessible substances on the planet, people still never seem to drink enough water. The average human is made up of about 70% water, which needs to be replenished on a daily basis. Many complaints people have about fatigue and headaches can be traced back to dehydration. In order to give your body the healthy balance it needs to function, you need to consume enough water to keep yourself properly hydrated. Not only will this help you stay in peak condition, it will also help you feel more energized and awake. By drinking straight, purified water you will be sure to notice a difference in your body and your life.

Apple Cider Vinegar

While I’m sure you have never considered drinking any type of vinegar daily, apple cider vinegar has numerous health benefits in addition to keeping you awake. If you add a tablespoon to water every morning you will get rid of any fatigue and also help your digestion, immune system, and even your blood pressure. The malic acid in apple cider vinegar has been known to work as an antiviral. It can rid your body of harmful bacteria and viruses, which can reduce your chances of catching a cold and even ease any allergies you may have. By making apple cider vinegar part of your daily routine, you will improve your health and increase your stamina. That’s not too shabby for something that costs less than $ 5 at any grocery store.

Your afternoon slump is usually the time when you would go for another cup of coffee. To improve your health and lifestyle, ditch the caffeine and try some other remedies. Water and oxygen are all around you and can vastly improve your health. An increase of vitamins and antioxidants will give you more stamina and make your daily tasks more manageable. Being tired all the time is not something you should have to live with and can be put to rest easily. Take the time to go through your pantry and take out a few remedies. Both you and your body will be much happier for it.

Patients forced to make appointments to boost profits, says Labour MP

Healthcare provider Virgin Care has been forcing patients to attend extra appointments to boost profits, says former employee and the Labour MP for Dewsbury, Paula Sherriff.

Speaking in the House of Commons, where she had been granted the first question to the prime minister, and where her words were protected by parliamentary privilege, Sherriff accused Virgin Care of insisting on, “extra consultations before surgery, boosting their profits at the expense of the taxpayer, and patient safety”.

Before she stood for parliament, Sherriff worked in Virgin Care’s dermatology service, in West Yorkshire. She claims patients were obliged to book a second, follow-up appointment before receiving treatment – for a suspect mole, for example – when the NHS would previously have carried out the same work in a single booking.

She told the prime minister this was “amongst many unethical practices” she had witnessed. The process of “double appointments” allows Virgin Care to levy the £100 to £150 appointment fee from the NHS twice, Sherriff said.

The MP, who has made a name for herself in her short time in parliament by campaigning against the so-called “tampon tax” on sanitary products, believes the outsourcing of NHS work increases costs, and produces worse outcomes for patients.

Virgin Care, which is part of the Virgin Group, has the contracts to carry out over 230 NHS and social care services, from running GPs’ surgeries to providing healthcare in prisons. Virgin bought up private healthcare provider Assura Medical in 2010 to capitalise on the fast-growing market in healthcare.

The prime minister replied that it was the last Labour government, not the Conservatives, that had significantly increased privatisation in the NHS.

Boost Energy Naturally: 24 Must-Use Tips To Improve Energy

When it comes to feeling good and having energy, we all “want it.” Everyone wants to feel healthy, strong and energetic. Our bodies react differently, some have an easier time finding energy while others find it to be difficult.

Boost Energy Naturally

Today, we’re discussing 24 awesome ways to boost energy naturally. It doesn’t matter if you have trouble with energy, if you begin applying these 24 tips to your life, you’re going to feel stronger and have plenty of energy to burn.

  1. Make sure your energy loss isn’t “something medically treatable”

If you haven’t had a check-up in a while, it might be a good idea. Things like anemia (if you are a menstruating female, or hypothyroidism (“low thyroid”) are fairly common.

If you have seen a doctor and feel super-fatigued, have sleep issues and just plain feel “burned out” you might have what is called adrenal fatigue. This is entirely treatable but you need to find a practitioner (someone in my field) who is used to treating it.

  1. Avoid overuse of stimulants

Even taking sinus decongestant medications can stimulate your adrenal glands to over-produce cortisol, hence getting you into the “adrenal danger zone.” It takes more than about 4 daily caffeinated cups (too much!) of coffee to “do it’ usually, but only a few shots of “energy drinks”-really toxic   adrenal zappers.

And lastly, if you are on Ritalin or Adderall for ADHD you are at serious risk for “adrenal burnout” so see if there are more natural alternatives for you. I personally treat patients with a combination of Phosphatidyl serine and “GPC” or Alpha glycerol-phospho-choline.

  1. Don’t smoke!

Nicotine disrupts your sleep cycle as the least of the problems it causes.

  1. Don’t overuse alcohol

Many people use alcohol to get to sleep. Sure, you’ll “pass out” but you’ll have awakenings and your sleep will not be refreshing. Alcohol should be “cut off” a minimum of two hours prior to bedtime.

  1. Sleep!

If you are not getting a good, solid 7-8 hours of sleep each night, you are sleep-deprived. You need a good “sleep routine”, comfy surroundings, lose the T.V.  and tablet, and see if that helps. Without good, restorative sleep your energy will never be where it should be.

  1. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet

If you don’t know what this is you can just start by trying to eat “whole foods.” This means you will have more energy if you cut out fast foods, highly processed foods, sugar and “white foods” such as potatoes and white bread or white pasta, which your body treats the same as sugar.  Try not to get too “starving” as this zaps energy too. Many people do quite well with 5-6 small meals or 3 medium meals with 2 snacks daily.

  1. Add foods for energy boosting to your diet

Salmon is one of the top foods that give energy and is extremely healthy for you. Salmon can be pre-made and is especially healthy if poached. But always always go for wild caught as farmed is actually BAD for your health. Salmon is full of omega-3 fatty acids. These special fats improve memory and reduce depression, as well as giving you energy.

Hummus is a Mediterranean dip with only a few simple ingredients so it’s not a huge challenge to make. It’s just puréed garbanzo beans, sesame-based tahini, olive oil, and lemon juice and perhaps some diced garlic. All of these ingredients contribute nutrients for energy. The fiber and protein in the beans stabilize blood sugar, satisfy energy-zapping hunger, and boost energy.

Pistachios have a combination of protein, fiber, and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats that make them a healthy and energy-giving snack.

Almonds are super-snacks if eaten as raw and organic, non-GMO food items. They contain important nutrients like magnesium and B vitamins that help convert food to energy.

  1. Add energy boosting drinks

Healthy smoothies

Use whey protein concentrate (not isolate) and make sure it is without artificial sweeteners   or other toxic additives. Stevia is fine.  Put it in a blender with almond milk and frozen organic non- GMO berries-blend well. This is an amazing energy burst. Don’t use sugar or high-fructose juice or you’ll ruin the energy boost and health effects.

Yerba mate

If you are adventurous you might want to try this powerful herbal tea. It has 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids, 11 polyphenols and antioxidants too. Yerba mate is a great alternative to coffee for boosting energy levels naturally.

My favorite

I use my blender bottle and add filtered water, ice cubes and organic non GMO powders made from fruits and veggies. This is such a “hit” of anti-oxidants that energy levels amp right up nicely. Another way to do this and be “less lazy” than I am is to “juice”-quite a boost there too.

  1. Add energy boosting herbs

Herbs called “adrenal adaptogens” quiet down adrenal hormone levels and add to overall energy. Examples include herbs such as Siberian Ginseng, Ashwagandha,  Rhodiola,   Panax ginseng,  Astragalus and Reishi mushroom.

  1. Get rid of hidden inflammation

Just a word here because eating a perfectly anti-inflammatory diet isn’t all you need. Your weight needs to be normal and sometimes you also need anti-inflammatory supplements such as curcumin. This depends somewhat on your genetics.  Long standing chronic inflammation not only zaps energy, it increases your chances for many diseases.

  1. Get rid of oxidative stress

If you are not getting about 15 servings of fruits and/or vegetables (organic, non-GMO of course) per day, are under some stress, exposed to pollution or other toxins, you are amongst the vast majority of Americans who have insufficient blood levels of antioxidants=oxidative stress. This is easily fixable and if not fixed, has the same consequences as does unchecked chronic inflammation.

  1. Normalize your weight

Just a mention here without nagging-yes, being overweight does indeed increase chronic energy-draining inflammation. But it also is just plain “mechanically” tiring to be lugging around a metaphorical bag of potatoes or two, right?

  1. Get on a regular fitness regimen

If you have the energy to get started, then I promise you, this won’t drain you, it will energize you. Start by walking your dog or just by getting of your chair and doing 5 push-ups. Do squats while you are brushing your teeth. The more you MOVE, the better it is for your health and energy levels.

  1. Take care of a depressed mood

Depression is exhausting. Happy brain chemicals give you energy. Get un-depressed. Start by making a list of everything you have to be grateful for-there must be things! Adopt a dog if you don’t have one-and yes, this is my answer to many “things.”

  1. Deal with anxiety

Don’t “deal” by taking pharmaceuticals-they are addicting, brain-harming and ultimately energy-reducing. There are many techniques but you should start by simply listing what makes you anxious and discuss realistic solutions with a trusted friend.

  1. De-stress

Life is stressful. Work is stressful. You must put stress-reduction techniques into place from breathing   techniques to exercising to laughing. Laughter is the most under-rated form of stress reduction. Read those jokes people email you. Take   “adrenal support adaptogens” if your cortisol levels are up.

  1. Look at “good to yourself” as you can

It’s stressful to be always looking critically in the mirror at either your face or body or both. Get yourself looking as good as possible. Treat yourself to a “makeover”, go on that diet, get exercising…whatever it takes…and then learn to “leave it alone”….movie stars don’t even “look perfect” so why should you think you need to?

  1. Hydrate!

Many people are a bit dehydrated, which causes a loss of energy. Unless there is a kidney problem or a diuretic drug causing this issue, it usually happens because someone is consuming diuretic liquids such as coffee and soda all day, instead of water.

In addition, if that same person stops drinking cola, only to start drinking alcohol at night, they will continue the diuretic (fluid losing) effect. The solution is no mystery-cut down on caffeine and alcohol and drink healthy fluids such as water with lemon during the day. Your urine is clear when you are well-hydrated.

  1. Use vitamins known to increase energy

These energy upping vitamins include B-complex vitamins with a special shout-out to B12. Vitamin D, Co-Q 10  and glutathione also increase energy levels.

  1. Use other natural energy supplements

Perhaps the most useful and well known supplements for energy are acetyl-l-carnitine and ribose.

  1. Supplement mitochondrial age-related ATP loss

As we age, our cells of respiration called mitochondria make less ATP. ATP is what our cells and organs use for energy. We feel the decrease and are told “it’s normal because we’re older.” Mitochondrial energy replacement supplements” DO work.

  1. Keep your brain active and healthy

A healthy, active brain means you’ll have more physical energy. Brain health involves a healthy diet, exercise, brain-amping supplements and “getting out and doing” for your entire life.

  1. Surround yourself with a good support system

It has been demonstrated over and over that a good support system leads to less stress, less depression, improved sense of well-being, improved brain health, and an increase in energy.

  1. Balance your hormones if needed

If you have gone to your “regular doctor” and nothing has been found, and you have looked up “adrenal fatigue” and that just doesn’t sound like it’s the issue you might have a hormonal issue. This is when you really need to find someone in my specialty to help you, as there are too many doctors who claim to be hormone experts and quite frankly are not. If you are a male you might have “low T.” If you are a female, you might have low progesterone which can occur at any pre-menopausal age.
