9 Ways to Make Popcorn Healthier

Is popcorn fattening? No it’s not unless you load it with calorie-rich toppings and flavorings. A cup of popcorn contains 30 calories. It contains one gram of dietary fiber per serving. Fiber makes you feel full for a longer duration and prevents snacking. Popcorn is a healthy snack if consumed in the right way.

Here are nine ways to make popcorn healthier:

1. Opt for stove-top or air pop popcorn

Is air-popped popcorn fattening than stove-top? Air-popping requires no oil and is low in calories. It is the healthiest way to prepare popcorn. Preparing the popcorn on stove-top in little oil can make you consume healthy fats.

2. Avoid butter

A chemical is added to buttered or extra-buttered popcorn which is purchased from outside. Is buttered popcorn fattening? Buttered popcorn is fattening if you add huge amounts of butter. You should prepare popcorn with two to three teaspoons of butter and gradually cut down it down.

3. Manage portion sizes

The serving size should be decided depending on the type of popcorn. A cup of plain popcorn contains 30 calories but once you add butter, salt, cheese, and other flavorings the calorie count boosts up.

4. Avoid microwave popcorn

Is microwave popcorn fattening? Microwave popcorn contains a lot of salt, additional artificial flavorings, and the portion size is also large. It is the most unhealthy way to have popcorn.

5. Use a good cooking oil

To make popcorn you should opt for walnut oil, extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil. Palm and coconut oil have high amounts of saturated fats and should be used sparingly. Avoid using corn, sunflower and soybean oil.

6. Avoid kettle corn

Kettle corn is a salty and sweet variety of popcorn. It is seasoned with refined sugar, salt, and oil. The pre-packing makes it difficult to control the calories and the sodium content. Having kettle corn increases the salt and calorie intake. Opt for low-sodium kettle corn.

7. Add healthier toppings

You can make popcorn healthier by adding healthy toppings. The toppings should be in form of spices and seasoning and not powders that have hidden calories. Add cheese, hot sauce, jalapenos, or sprinkle of balsamic vinegar.

8. Look for added sweeteners and chemicals

Avoid anything that is more than popped kernel. Does additional flavoring makes popcorn fattening? The calorie content increases with additional flavorings. And these flavorings do no good. Flavorings like cheese powders and truffle oil don’t have cheese or truffle at all. They are just chemicals.

9. Add some proteins

Having popcorn along with proteins will keep you satiated for a longer time. Plus you get the benefits of eating proteins, too. Adding peanut butter, nuts, seeds, or one or two ounces of cheese will increase the protein content.

5 Ways Avocado Oil Will Make You Healthier

First, a confession. I didn’t get into avocados until I was in my mid-20’s. As a kid, I gave it a shot, but always thought of it as a kind of tasteless fruit. Well, its flavor and texture are debatable, but what is not up for debate is the fact that avocado is one of the healthiest foods around. The fruit’s oil is considered one of the most beneficial natural oils we have, and it can be used in many ways.

Avocado Oil Hair Benefits

Avocado oil contains many nutrients, including amino acids, iron, copper, magnesium, protein, folic acid, and vitamins A, B, D and E. Because of this, it does an exceptionally great job at hydrating and nourishing dry, damaged, or broken hair. The oil’s consistency makes it easier to penetrate and be absorbed by the hair and scalp.

Avocado oil acts as a treatment for (and prevention of) dandruff, as a mild conditioner, and as a moisturizer. It even acts as a natural protector from the sun’s potentially-harmful rays. Plus, the nutrients and high fat content promote healthy hair growth, aid in the prevention of hair loss, and ease the discomfort of a dry or itchy scalp. Many shampoos include avocado oil in their list of ingredients, for this precise reason.

Skin Benefits

The avocado’s oil – especially when cold-pressed – possesses many attributes which are great for your skin. You can apply avocado oil directly to the skin to help it stay smooth. It can also play a part in preventing inflammation and unpleasant skin-related conditions.

This oil can also act as an all-natural moisturizer. This is a much more natural alternative to the typical, run-of-the-mill moisturizers out there, which are often laden with chemicals, fragrances, or preservatives. This way, not only are you getting quicker and more positive results, but are also minimizing the amount of possible side-effects. We already mentioned this oil’s great skin-penetration capabilities, and they this relatively thick substance to be absorbed faster, and get to work. Softer, healthier, properly-hydrated skin. From an avocado. Don’t you love it?

Avocado Oil Neutralizes Free Radicals

“Free radicals” is the name given to particles within the body which attack the cells, and can cause damage to the body if left unchecked. Normally, the body can handle and regulate these radicals, but with age and with certain nutrition habits comes the chance that free-radical production will get out of hand. Free radicals have been linked to cancer, heart issues, premature aging of the skin, and other conditions.

Avocado oil can help to reign in these radicals, and keep them balanced. Unlike many other fruits and vegetables, avocado (and its oil) has the ability to penetrate deeper into the cell, and offer a higher, more encompassing degree of cellular protection, which translates into better health, overall.

Benefits to Cooking With Avocado Oil

I am not a fan of the word ‘superfood’, but avocado has got to be one. It produces one of best cooking oils out there, though some are not even aware that you can cook with it. Adding this oil to your pantry is not only a refreshing change, but a much healthier option than most other cooking oils.

It has a very high smoking point, which makes it a perfect oil for intense-heat cooking. Remember those free radicals which are inside you? They exist outside of you as well. Avocado oil helps to neutralize the radicals in your cooking, and provides healthier food.

Oil Pulling With Avocado Oil

Studies are still being conducted on oil pulling. It is the practice of holding oil in one’s mouth for 10 or 20 consecutive minutes before spitting it out and rinsing. Those of us who engage in this activity already know it to be one of the greatest (not to mention most interesting!) ways of maintaining proper oral health and hygiene. I don’t do this every day, but I would if I could afford it. I use an excellent sesame oil, and that stuff is expensive!

Oil pulling can be done with a number of oils, and one of the better-tasting ones on that list is avocado oil. I’ve given it a shot, I just prefer it on salad, I guess. Like I said – sesame all the way!

Pulling takes some getting used to. You will be fighting the urge to spit it out. The process can be easier by using the more inviting and generally more palatable avocado oil. One table spoon (start with a little less, like half or three-qaurters), slide it in, let it sit in your mouth for a good few minutes, then swish for a bit, and spit.

NOTE: make sure to avoid using low-quality vegetable oils, low-grade peanut oil, canola oil, and the like. That stuff is just not the way to pull. Those oils are not nearly as beneficial as higher-quality oils such as sesame, coconut, almond, and olive. If you’re gonna do something – do it right.

This method is not for everyone. Oil pulling can get pricey, and some just consider it to be unnatural and icky. It also depends on the oil you choose, which is why avocado is a smart beginner’s choice.

Conclusion

I feel that people overlook and underrate avocados. They just don’t seem to be as popular as they ought to be. Some of this may be due to the avocado’s somewhat-elusive stage of ripening. Maybe it is a question of cost for some people, since they are expensive. One thing is clear – they ain’t just for guacamole anymore. The avocado’s oil can help you live a healthier life, plain and simple. Whether you use it on your hair, on your skin, or in your food – it is natural, tasty, and highly beneficial.

3 Natural Ways to Grow a Healthier Beard

Facial hair is a personal look you might be considering. But be wise about your decision because researchers state that your facial appearance affects more than just your love life. It could be the reason why you’re hired or promoted – and if you get a ticket, your facial appearance influences what sentence the judge gives you in court.

But when it comes to romantic attraction, researchers found that most heterosexual people find the opposite sex with extreme sexual characteristics of their gender the most attractive (e.g. the most feminine- or masculine-looking). Facial hair is a masculine characteristic, and researchers found that it can drastically change the vibe you’re giving off and your level of attraction:

  • Grow a full beard if you want to look super manly. Female participants rated full beards as most masculine and aggressive.

  • Female participants also associated full beards with making you look wiser, more socially mature, but also older. You’ll look older, but in a sage-like way!

  • Grow a light beard if you want to take on the “alpha male” look. Female participants thought light beards looked the most dominant.

Drum roll please! Here’s what you probably want to know – the type of facial hair women find the most attractive. You might be surprised – it’s a light stubble! Female participants said light stubbles were the most attractive and preferred them for both short-term flings and long-term serious relationships.

But you have your own reasons for wanting to grow facial hair, and it might not be something as superficial as mere attractiveness. For example, you might be a professor who’s trying to be taken more seriously by colleagues and students – a full beard is probably your best choice. Whatever the reason, here are some natural tips to help you grow healthy facial hair:

1. Boost Your Protein Intake

Hair is primarily made up of protein – specifically, keratin. Your body makes keratin from amino acids, some of which you can only get from eating protein. The healthiest, clean proteins come from vegetables, like beans, nuts, seeds, and soy. But the next healthiest protein sources are antioxidant-rich mushrooms and hard-boiled eggs.

You can also opt for vegetable-based protein powders if you want to get concentrated clean protein without eating a ton of nuts.

2. Remember to Exercise, Meditate, or Practice Yoga Daily

If you’re stressed at work or home, it can impact your hair growth. Researchers found that your body’s response to stress affects your hair follicles and can inhibit or slow hair growth. Exercising helps alleviate stress. Yoga and meditation are even better stress-relieving activities. In fact, researchers found that practicing yoga induces a state that counteracts your body’s flight-or-fight stress response.

But if you find yoga, meditation, and routine exercises boring, you can try these exciting winter-friendly sports:

Parkour or freerunning is what you see in almost every action movie. You dash between buildings – literally! It’s an official sport with ancient roots in Africa. Participants perform acrobatics on stairways, walls, and anything urban-related. Freerunners backflip off a bridge to land safely on a mat, vault across a maze of guardrails, and do other excitement-packed stunts that you’ve probably already bought a movie ticket to see!

Skiing and snowboarding give you an adrenaline rush that’s unique to most sports. While you’re speeding down a snowy hill surrounded by evergreens, all your work and home troubles get left behind.

3D dodgeball is the extreme version of your gym class’s dodgeball. Here you’re bouncing up and down on a trampoline while trying to hit your opponents with dodgeballs while also avoiding being hit!

3. Keep Your Hair-Nourishing Nutrient Levels Up

According to the Nutritional Guide, not getting enough vitamin A dries out your hair. They also say that your hair follicles need vitamins C and E for healthy hair growth. Getting your daily biotin, which is vitamin B7, is regarded by Harvard as a major factor in your hair strength and texture.

You can get all of these nutrients and more by eating a kale and spinach salad sprinkled with almonds and sunflower seeds – which together cost less than $ 3!

If you’re looking to change your facial appearance by growing facial hair to look more attractive, seem wiser, look more in control, or some other personal reason, try these natural tips first. Don’t resort to pharmaceuticals or products that promise a quick solution – these are often loaded with toxins that tax your liver and increase your risk for cancer and other diseases. The natural route gives you gradual results, but is healthiest for your body.

"Kangaroo care" makes premature babies healthier and wealthier, study finds

Premature babies who were breastfed exclusively and kept warm through continuous skin-to-skin contact have become young adults with larger brains, higher salaries and less stressful lives than babies who received conventional incubator care, according to a study published this week.

The research (pdf), in the journal Pediatrics, compared 18- to 20-year-olds who, as premature and low birth-weight infants, were randomised at birth in Colombia to receive either traditional incubator care or kangaroo mother care (KMC) – a technique whereby parents or caregivers become a baby’s incubator and its main source of food and stimulation – until they could maintain their own body temperature.

The kangaroo method involves the baby nestling in a “kangaroo” position on the caregiver’s chest as soon as possible after birth, accompanied by exclusive breastfeeding. Parent and child leave the hospital together as soon as possible after birth, after which there is rigorous monitoring of baby and mother for one year after the infant’s original due date (rather than the actual birth date).

Researchers investigated 264 of the KMC participants who weighed less than 1.8kg at birth, and found that the technique offered significant protection against early death. The mortality rate among incubator-treated babies was 7.7%, more than double that of those in the KMC group (3.5%). Almost every other area investigated revealed further advantages: average hourly wages of the KMC group were nearly 53% higher than their counterparts; cerebral development was significantly higher; family life was found to be more nurturing and protective; and children spent more time in school and were less aggressive, hyperactive and stressed.

“This study indicates that kangaroo mother care has significant, long-lasting social and behavioural protective effects 20 years after the intervention,” said lead researcher Dr Nathalie Charpak, of the Kangaroo Foundation in Bogotá.

“We firmly believe that this is a powerful, efficient, scientifically based healthcare intervention that can be used in all settings, from those with very restricted to unrestricted access to healthcare.”

According to the World Health Organisation, nearly one in 10 babies worldwide is born preterm (before 37 completed weeks of gestation), with resulting birth complications the leading cause of death among children under five. Preterm birth rates are rising globally every year, yet more premature babies are born in low-income countries (9%) – where they face a greater risk of complications – than high-income countries (12%). In Malawi, for example, 18 in every 100 births are preterm.

Many survivors face a lifetime of disability – including learning disabilities and visual and hearing problems – and require extra care to avoid illness and death from secondary, preventable complications including hypothermia. In developing countries, where incubators are often scarce and unreliable, kangaroo mother care could save lives, said Dr Peter Singer, chief executive officer of Grand Challenges Canada, which supported the research.

“A premature infant is born somewhere in the world every two seconds,” he said. “This study shows that kangaroo mother care gives premature and low birth-weight babies a better chance of thriving. Kangaroo mother care saves brains and makes premature and low birth-weight babies healthier and wealthier.”

While the technique does not replace modern science or neonatology, it is an excellent complement, said Charpak. Hospitals in Scandinavia, among them the NICU in Uppsala, Sweden, are using KMC to stabilise preterm babies. Grand Challenges Canada is funding two “centres of excellence” and 10 treatment centres to deliver kangaroo care across Cameroon and Mali, where preterm birth rates are among the highest in the world.

The study’s positive findings are impossible to attribute to one reason alone, said Charpak. Rather, they result from a multidisciplinary approach involving regular skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding, education of the mother and family, and support over a 12-month follow-up period.

“One of our hypotheses is that, by placing the infant in the mother, father or caregiver’s chest, the infant’s brain is in a less stressful environment,” said Charpak. “KMC also creates a climate in which the parents become progressively more aware of the child and more prone to sensitive caring.”

In contrast, said Charpak, a preterm baby born at 30 weeks could spend seven weeks in an incubator, where it is separated from its mother and faces a steady stream of light and noise. “It is easy to understand why this may not be the place for the baby’s immature brain to grow correctly,” she added.

Although a Cochrane review of 21 randomised control trials concluded that kangaroo mother care significantly reduces mortality among preterm babies and is a safe and effective alternative to conventional care, global use of the technique remains low. The Every Newborn action plan, endorsed by the World Health Organisation in 2014, set a target to reach at least 50% of the world’s low birth-weight infants with kangaroo mother care by 2020.

Charpak is hopeful that research efforts like the Colombia study will change attitudes to the care of preterm babies, not least among health workers.

“There are barriers related to the implementation of KMC programmes, particularly from health staff,” she said. “We believe long-term results will help convince the doubtful about the benefits of implementing KMC.”

The fall-less city and other innovations for a healthier old age

The city of Liverpool is aiming to become a “fall-less” city – so that all older adults with limited or reduced mobility can venture forth into the streets, parks and other public places knowing that their chances of falling have been significantly reduced. One-third of older people in the UK experience a fall each year, rising to half the over-80s. Working with the Universities of Liverpool and Cambridge, the city council is implementing falls prevention and mitigation as part of its Age-Friendly City (AFC) initiative.

Promoted by the World Health Organisation, the age-friendly city movement has spread across the globe. With projections that half Europe’s population will be over 50 within a couple of decades and that the world will have more people over 60 than under 16 by 2050, the age-proofing of our environments is high on the agenda.

Already more than 500 million people over 65 live in cities. The urban old reach 250 million in Asia, 57 million in Latin America and 23 million in Africa. Indeed 90% of us, young and old, will live in urban environments by the end of the century.

The age-friendly city initiative is now an international movement supported by forums across the globe

The age-friendly city initiative is now an international movement supported by forums across the globe. The 2015 sustainable development goals (SDGs), call for inclusive urbanisation that enables older persons to participate in planning and decision-making, have access to safe and affordable public transport, and enjoy safe, inclusive and accessible green and public spaces.

While there is a strong emphasis on health, including the successful prevention of disease, disability, frailty and the promotion of healthy lives and activities, the age-friendly movement has moved beyond this to include the natural and built environment, cultural attitudes, social capital, equity and inclusion.

Investing in public transport is essential to create age-friendly cities. Older women in particular rely on public transport to make the complex journeys enabling them to juggle multiple roles as caregivers, housekeepers and income providers. Simple initiatives like those in Ukraine, promoted by the civil society organisation Turbota pro Litnih v Ukraini encourage older people to take an active role in improving public transport services, extending bus routes to poorly-served districts, and relocating bus stops so that local health centres can be easily accessed.

Similarly, various health initiatives encouraging physical activity and healthy eating, and creating communities that support people with dementia are being promoted. Colombia’s capital, Bogotá, has now implemented schemes with the assistance of HelpAge International (HAI) which provides guidance to families and carers of people with dementia, signposting them to resources and support available in the urban community.

However, there is much to do. The recent HAI Ageing and the City report found that in “the majority of low- and middle-income countries, most people aged over 50 reported not feeling safe walking home alone at night”. And reports have highlighted the increased vulnerability of older adults in times of crisis – such as the New Orleans hurricane in 2005 or the 2011 Japanese tsunami, where older people were disproportionality affected. While Ageing and the City may call for older people in be more involved in disaster preparedness planning, the evidence that this is happening is limited.

The future for the age-friendly city movement it to engage with the smart city debate. The Citris Invention Lab at the University of California is exploring “connected ageing landscapes” which link body, home, community and caregiving in one integrated technological flow.

Something as simple as interactive television promotes social and civic engagement – enabling older adults to connect with friends, neighbours and family, actively engage in community life, interact with healthcare provision, and earn an income.

But cutting-edge inventions – assistive technologies, smart medication management tools, smart body sensors, robotics and autonomous vehicles – can combine to provide a flow from person to home to cityscape. Connected medical devices using external sensors and remote monitoring have the potential to ease the struggles for older people in cities.

The city has the potential to become one integrated physical and virtual space – within which less-mobile adults can participate to the best of their ability. Age-friendly cities need to be smart cities. The age-friendly city movement must engage with the technology of the future to provide an urban environment where we can all experience a healthy old age.

Why Having A Supercharged Sense of Smell is Key to a Healthier Relationship with Food

Take a minute, close your eyes, and imagine you are in a grocery store.

You are walking over to the produce section, and you see a rainbow of colors. Wow, gorgeous pineapples, bananas, peaches, and mangoes are on the shelves. You pick up and squeeze an orange in your hands and take a celery stick and break it in half to hear it snap.

But wait a minute.

All these beautiful foods are here, but you wonder why you didn’t smell an overwhelming fragrance of fruits and veggies when you walked in?

Well, here’s the deal.

There are two unfortunate reasons why.

However, once you know them, there are several things you can start doing right now to overcome them.

The first reason is that most of the fruits and veggies in the grocery store are picked too early. And therefore, they aren’t ripe and haven’t started producing their fragrant aroma, yet. Some fruits are picked when unripe because they can continue to ripen off the plant. These include apples, mangoes, guavas, and bananas; however, how effectively are they maturing in a cold, dark (no sunlight) grocery store?

It’s a good idea to frequent your local farmer’s markets for ripe and in season produce. Farmers are constantly in tune with the foods they grow. They can tell you all about wholesome, fresh fruits and veggies. Take a few minutes and ask them about color, texture, smell, and taste of the produce before you buy. That way, you can get to know what’s real and ripe, and what’s not.

The other reason you might not smell all the aromas in the grocery store has to do with this little term called Organoleptic. “Or-gan-o-lep-tic” is the science of using our senses to assess the quality and nutritional value of foods. Consequently, we should be able to use this organoleptic ability to seek out foods that are high in nutritional value.

Yes, you have superpowers that are built in to keep you on the prowl for great tasting nutritious foods.

Artificial fragrances (as well as fake foods) dampen our ability to tell if food is high in certain necessary nutrients i.e. ripe and healthy. Cologne and synthetic fragrances used in the home (including scented candles, air fresheners, and cleaning products) all hinder our ability to smell. These artificial scents are harsh chemicals that cause slight damage to the delicate nerve endings in our nose. They work by masking the natural scent with an oily chemical coating on the nerve ending – tricking our bodies into thinking we’re smelling something nice.

Of our five senses, our sense of smell guides us the most in making choices about what we like to eat. Our sense of smell is so powerful that it also shapes our mood. It can bring up old memories that we forgot we even had. You remember that time when your grandmother baked her special apple pie just for you? You would if you smelled a sweet apple pie right now.

Furthermore, bitter tasting herbs can give you a jumpstart on digestion, and having a keen sense of smell can do the same. In a study by Yeomans [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16545846], we find that once an odor is experienced concerning food, our bodies react in a way that prepares us for digestion. This preparation allows us to digest food better and ultimately maintain a healthy balanced weight.

So here are five ways to limit your exposure to toxins that harm your mucous membranes. In the long run, you’ll increase your sense of smell so you can innately go after foods that are rich in vital nutrients. And maybe more importantly, so you can be naturally repelled by fake foods that aren’t good for you.

  1. Using essential oils in place of perfume
Use about three drops of pure essential oil on a cotton ball and dampen the ball with water or coconut oil. Dab the cotton ball on your skin. You’ll want to test out the oils to make sure they are not irritating to your skin. Lavender, Grapefruit or Geranium are lovely sweet oils to start.

  2. Light incense or handmade candles (with essential oils) in your home.
There are many recipes online to make your scented candles. Or you can try Nag Campa incense, which is a nice earthy blend to bring calming and a relaxing scent into your home.

  3. Use soaps, shampoos, and lotions without artificial fragrances (Coconut oil is an excellent alternative)
Raw, organic coconut oil is the perfect all in one moisturizer for your hair and skin.

  4. Clean your home with white vinegar and water or lemon juice instead of harsh cleaners
Although vinegar is not a strong antibacterial, it is a very safe and effective cleaner for your home.

  5. Cut fresh flowers for your home or office
Having live plants in your home can cleanse and purify the air. If you are having company over or need a pick me up, try cut flowers from your garden to freshen up your home.

All of these ideas make your home more natural, beautiful and safe for your senses.

With these five simple practices, you can start to enhance your natural sense of smell. Practice strengthening your sense of smell. You may just be able to choose healthy foods based on your attraction to them. Removing more toxins from your environment is a great place to start to live a little more holistic life.

Germ vs Terrain Concept – Which Do We Adopt To Be Healthier?

In the Western world, we are desperately obsessed with killing issues off that we feel can threaten our livelihood. Whether it is germs, terrorists, or the up coming door neighbour, we seek to remove something that does not agree with us rather than trying to sustain a healthy stability amongst preferred and undesirable circumstances.

When it comes to our wellness, the Western world has largely adopted the germ theory, meaning we require to recognize and destroy something we deem as a foreign invader as it is straight responsible for triggering ailment. However, there is another concept referred to as the terrain theory, which believes that it is not the “germ” that determines disease, but rather, the state of our internal wellness and its capability to sustain homeostasis in the encounter of “unfriendly” organisms.

Let’s appear into every theory a bit more to establish which theory we ought to adopt when trying to be healthful.

Germ Concept

The germ – or microbial – concept of illness was popularized by Louis Pasteur (1822 – 1895), the inventor of pasteurization. This theory states that there are fixed, external germs which invade the body and are the direct cause of a assortment of separate, definable illnesses. If you really want to get effectively, you need to kill whatever germ made you sick, and do no matter what attainable to make “sure” that you in no way let a microbe to enter your entire body in the 1st place.

With this theory comes Western medication and its resources and technology that treats the symptoms of an unfriendly microbe rooting itself in the internal setting, by way of factors this kind of as drugs, surgical procedure, radiation, and chemotherapy. Taking it a stage more, in order to consider and stay away from an infection in the very first place, numerous vaccines have been launched to try to maintain the condition from invading our entire body in the very first area.

The germ theory was partly shaped around Pasteur’s thought that the human physique is sterile, which means it is a blank slate devoid of any germs. With this notion in thoughts we could conclude that we have to combat germs all the time in every way attainable, and that preventative measures by way of issues like nutrition are fundamentally useless.

So, if you are to closely adhere to the germ theory, you need to be vigilant towards various types of infections by way of prevention (mainly vaccinations), and destruction (antibiotics, surgical procedure, radiation, chemotherapy) of any external microbe that ever attempts or succeeds to get within our body.

Anything else is fundamentally fruitless against illness prevention.

Terrain Concept

The terrain theory was initiated by Claude Bernard (1813 – 1878), and later on built upon by Antoine Bechamp (1816-1908). He believed that the “terrain” or “internal environment” determined our state of overall health. When the physique is working in homeostasis, and immunity and detoxification is operating properly, he claimed there was a healthier terrain which could take care of a variety of pathogenic microorganisms that inevitably are thrown its way.

In essence, he believed the high quality of the terrain and the aspects it faced established an individual’s susceptibility to illness.

Bernard, Bechamp, and their successors, believed that illness occurs to a massive extent as a function of biology and as a end result of alterations that get place when metabolic processes grow to be imbalanced. Germs then become signs that stimulate the occurrence of a lot more signs and symptoms, which eventually culminate into disease. A weak terrain is naturally a lot more vulnerable to external threats, so it needs to be built up by means of nutrition, detoxification, and by keeping a proper pH or acid/alkaline balance.

For this and other factors Bechamp argued vehemently against vaccines, asserting that “The most significant issues could be provoked by the injection of residing organisms into the blood.” Untold numbers of researchers have agreed with him.

So, if you are to closely stick to the terrain theory, you may possibly make yourself mindful of different external microbes that could be hazardous to our well being and the gentle, non-toxic removal of them, but your target is on constructing and sustaining the integrity of your inner terrain so that any external microbe that you may possibly ingest does not morph into anything at all with serious implications to your overall health.

This indicates nutrition, detoxification, and mindset are essential aspects you take into account important in disease prevention and elimination.

Pasteur Recants On His Deathbed

One of the most intriguing twists in this battle for “disease prevention supremacy” largely headlined by Pasteur and Bernard, is that Pasteur recanted on his deathbed above his whole daily life perform, stating that “the microbe is absolutely nothing the milieu is almost everything.” An additional way of stating these phrases is that it is not the germ that leads to disease, but the terrain in which the germ is identified.

An additional gentleman, Rudolf Virchow, father of the germ theory, stated in his later years, “If I could dwell my daily life more than again, I would dedicate it to proving that germs look for their normal habitat–diseased tissues–rather than causing illness.”

So when you are thinking about your health prepare, strongly think about the final results we are seeing in a germ theory dominated wellness care system. Then determine regardless of whether you want to get that road, or follow individuals who are healthy that predominantly stick to the terrain theory.

This writer staunchly believes in the terrain concept and has removed many condition labels and signs from his lifestyle by totally following this theory and admonishing the notion of the germ theory. You can see the kind of benefits he generated by re-establishing his terrain, right here.

If you are also a firm believer that well being of your terrain largely determines your overall wellness, and want to know how to master that surroundings so you can not only survive but THRIVE, verify into this on the internet holistic overall health plan.

Locating The Way To Wellville: Modest Cities Compete To Get Healthier In Esther Dyson"s Latest Venture

Esther Dyson and her team are looking for a few good towns—five, to be precise—that want to take part in a grand experiment. Dyson, a tech investor named by Time magazine as one of the 10 most influential women in technology, wants to enlist small cities in a friendly competition to figure out how communities can become healthier places inhabited by healthier residents.

Here’s the idea: After going through a competitive selection process, five small cities or counties—each with a population of 100,000 or less—will be chosen to spend the next five years finding “The Way to Wellville,” as Dyson and her partners call the contest. So far, 10 finalists have been chosen, places like Scranton, Pennsylvania; Greater Muskegon, Michigan; Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Lake County, California. (A map showing the full list is here.)

The Way to Wellville tour stopped July 22 in Clatsop County, Oregon, where Clatsop Community Action’s food bank operates the community garden seen in the background. Last year, the community garden harvested 6,000 pounds of fresh produce that was distributed to hungry people in the area.

To run the challenge, Dyson created a small organization with the catchy, if slightly alarming, acronym of HICCup. The Health Initiative Coordinating Council, its full name, will assist the winning contestants in their journey to Wellville. Dyson will help bankroll the effort—she’s put in about $ 200,000 so far—and is part of the selection group choosing the final five. They’re now in the midst of a 10-city tour visiting each of the finalists and plan to announce the winners in mid-August.

Dyson’s team will help the chosen five raise money and provide an expert “navigator” to assist each town as they build a local local coalition by bringing many parties together—community advocates, health policy wonks, medical providers, local business leaders, finance experts—to develop and execute a health-improvement plan.

The contest will turn the five chosen communities into real-world, small-town laboratories. The hope is that by focusing on community-wide prevention and wellness efforts, each town will achieve real gains on a series of metrics that measure the health of the community and its people. Several of the 10 finalists have previous experience developing local health coalitions in conjunction with federal or private prevention grants. Overall metrics will be established at the start of the project for all five, with one individualized “wild card” metric for each community.

When it’s all over, Dyson told me, “I hope American health”—and not just the healthcare system—“will be changed. I hope there will be a visible impact that inspires people and actual, useful scientific data” that can be broadly shared.

Carrot harvest day at the community garden.

Carrot harvest day at the community garden.

The project’s idea and goals are solidly in the tradition of place-based efforts to improve local health pioneered by the Healthy Communities movement when it started some 25 years ago in Boston, Colorado, South Carolina and 20 California cities. Those efforts, which continue with support of funders like the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Convergence Partnership, focus on the links between the health of a community and its environment—including transportation, land use and access to healthy food and activity. Community Transformation Grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have helped local areas pursue the same kinds of local change and improvement since 2010. In fact, several of the 10 Wellville finalist cities received support from this federal program and a predecessor.

Dyson’s innovation is to take a more entrepreneurial approach that incorporates new technology and encourages collaboration with investors, as well as philanthropists and community stakeholders. For her, the concept was inspired by an idea she once heard floated to use small towns as laboratories for health innovation and improvement. Since it never came to pass, she decided—and publicly announced—she would do it herself.

“Then I had to figure out what I had gotten myself into,” she laughs. She convened a series of brainstorming meetings to develop the concept. In the process, she met and hired Rick Brush, a former Cigna Cigna health insurance executive who has spent the last several years looking at ways to create market-based incentives that lead to improvements in the health not just of individuals, but of whole communities. As HICCup’s CEO, part of his job will be to help the communities work with health insurers and investors who hope to generate revenue by reducing spending on healthcare costs.

“Our DNA is connected to the market-based approach.” Brush told me. “The business models that demonstrate an impact on producing better health at a community level are the ones that are going to succeed.”

The project has moved rapidly since the call for applications was issued April 10. Forty-two applicants submitted by the May 23 deadline; since then the six-member selection committee has narrowed the pool to 10 finalists. The five winners will be selected in mid-August after site visits to the final candidates that are now underway.

The contest will raise help each town raise its visibility, helping attract publicity and financial support. Brush estimates each town will need to raise $ 15 million to $ 50 million in cash and in-kind contributions to fund community transformation efforts. HICCup’s navigators will help them apply best practices in the areas of prevention and health-improvement and make use of cutting-edge technology.

The HICCup team will also develop three networks of partners. The first will be a “health mart” to include startups and companies like IBM IBM that are developing health apps and IT systems as well as national retailers like Walmart and Walgreens that want to “assess whether they can create a market for healthy foods,” says Brush.

A second network will help the towns attract capital and develop new kinds of sustainable financing that can pay for health-improvement efforts over the five years of the contest and beyond. One approach is social impact bonds—financing vehicles that raise money from private investors to address conditions like moldy homes or polluted air that perpetuate asthma. If the people’s health improves, reducing healthcare costs, the investors get some of the savings back as profit.

Healthier foods rating site could be reinstated inside of weeks

The foods rating internet site pulled down soon after intervention from the assistant overall health minister’s office in controversial conditions could be reinstated inside of weeks.

State and territory well being ministers have agreed to help the well being star rating method which will see foods labelled for its dietary value. The method also has a internet site featuring a calculator to rate the healthiness of diverse meals.

The web site was launched in February but pulled down within hours after the workplace of assistant wellness minister, Fiona Nash, intervened. Nash’s chief of personnel, Alastair Furnival, resigned his place right after his back links to junk food companies have been unveiled.

Junk foods businesses have lobbied heavily against the web site and rating program, claiming it would be puzzling for consumers. Guardian Australia understands there was no vote on regardless of whether to reinstate the website at the meeting, but instead the ministers agreed they would assistance the program following a discussion.

Michael Moore, chief executive of the Public Overall health Association of Australia (PHAA), said he anticipated the website to be up and working as early as subsequent week now the forum had endorsed it and buyers could see meals star ratings on goods inside of 3 months.

Employing the rating technique on food packaging will be voluntary for the up coming five years and there will be a assessment of the technique inside of two years.

“It is now above to market. There is a clear opportunity for business to assist in tackling the obesity epidemic. Customers will appreciate the possibility to have clear details [about] the dietary articles of the food that they obtain and eat. It is so straightforward, the a lot more stars the more healthy the food,” Moore mentioned.

“It has been a difficult negotiation from the beginning with compromises on both sides.”

Nash chaired the forum but did not respond straight to inquiries about whether or not she had any worries about the rating system. Her workplace alternatively sent through a basic statement which incorporated the line “Minister Nash welcomed New Zealand’s selection to join the wellness star rating technique on a voluntary basis, and acknowledged the work and communication among the Australian and New Zealand Governments with regards to the wellness star rating system”.

After the site was initially pulled in February, Nash stated it was due to the fact it went up also swiftly and was not ready. Queries have been raised about Furnival’s backlinks to junk meals organizations and it was exposed he still had a stake in the lobbying firm Australian Public Affairs (APA) owned by his wife, Tracey Cain.

APA has acted for Cadbury’s parent business, the snack meals giant Mondelez, as effectively as the soft drink business group the Australian Drinks Council.

Ministers at the forum agreed the Australian Overall health Ministers Advisory Council would host the rating calculator and design guide until the launch of the web site which will come about soon after a public training campaign.

A reference group under the Front-of-Pack Oversight Committee will be tasked with communicating with modest companies to assist with the program.

Ministers at the forum also considered a report on warning labels on alcohol for pregnant women and agreed to maintain it voluntary with a overview in two many years.

A healthier society is just as significantly about neighborhood as healthcare

A colleague in the States was telling me about a meeting he’d had with a campaigner from the Jamaica Plain neighbourhood in Boston. “She pointed out to me: ‘This town has significantly increased amounts of cancer than the rest of the state, notably amongst ladies. What would it mean to develop a cancer-free of charge, toxin-free of charge economic climate?’ When she stated that, a lot of bells rang in my head.”

They rang in my head as well. Over the previous handful of months, the Reside Much better Challenge has brought stories of inspirational tasks about the world developing foods, managing waste, saving and generating vitality in new ways. This kind of issues are normally imagined of as environmental, or sustainability initiatives. But how different may items seem if we were to reimagine them as public overall health initiatives?

When you believe about it, practically almost everything we want to do to create far more resilient, reduce-carbon communities would also aid develop cancer-free, healthier communities. Whether or not it is creating community renewable power firms, beginning urban food production tasks, marketing cycling, retrofitting houses, they all promote public well being. One particular could even argue that nearby currencies this kind of as the Bristol Pound, diversifying and strengthening regional economies and enabling community investment, must also be noticed as public wellness initiatives.

In the world of public wellness this conversation is currently taking area. In March this year, the Lancet published the exceptional Manifesto for Planetary Well being, calling for “a social movement to assistance collective public overall health action at all levels of society – personal, neighborhood, nationwide, regional, worldwide, and planetary. Our aim is to reply to the threats we face: threats to human overall health and wellbeing, threats to the sustainability of our civilisation, and threats to the all-natural and human-produced techniques that assistance us.”

I spoke to Martin McKee, professor of public overall health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medication and 1 of the authors of the manifesto. He mentioned: “Individuals men and women who want to promote a healthier, safer, higher-high quality setting as nicely as the health of the population have significantly in typical. We ought to be operating together in some coalition of the inclined to try out and make the globe a better place.”

For David Pencheon, director of the NHS Sustainable Development Unit, this coming collectively is previously occurring, just not nevertheless at the scale necessary: “Hospitals could be wellness-improving civic structures … could they supply vitality via district neighborhood heating systems, biomass, mixed heat and energy? Could they offer allotments, could they supply green spaces, could they provide areas the place folks could truly see what it looks like to dwell healthier lives? Could they have great meals shops in the concourses, could they have honest trade coffee in the concourses? All of individuals issues sound really visionary. But really every single 1 of these issues is occurring now, but sporadically in isolated examples”.

Some NHS trusts have begun, or linked to, foods expanding projects, and are taking daring methods about renewable vitality. Some are doing work with “green fitness center” initiatives, and what’s referred to as “social prescribing”, in which men and women are prescribed environmental conservation or horticultural operate. Nottinghamshire Healthcare Believe in have altered their meals procurement so they now source 90% of fruit, vegetables and meat from inside of thirty miles of the hospital, an injection of £2m into the local economic climate every single year.

Islington council in London, together with NHS Islington, have started out a Seasonal Health Intervention Network (Shine) which seeks to decrease fuel poverty, seasonal deaths and hospital emissions, providing tips on energy efficiency and finances. It has led to the thousands of participants conserving £455,000 from their power payments. The Houghton-le-Spring Major Care Centre in Sunderland, a state-of-the-art ecological developing, combines well being and social care services, with an emphasis on workout and health.

But how might communities themselves try out to initiate this kind of an technique when it is not coming from their wellness providers? A single illustration is underway in Devon, led by transition town Totnes. Caring Town Totnes is an initiative functioning to carry folks from across the spectrum of care, wellbeing and public health collectively in the face of the austerity cuts. Their Totnes Welfare Conference in October 2013 brought collectively people from across the community involved in care, and was followed by a nicely-attended wellness and welfare day. They are now searching to develop a local community hub and seeing this various strategy as a catalyst for new livelihoods, new social enterprises, new models of social investment, peer-to-peer lending, skill sharing, and linking to wider financial localisation operate in the town. As David Pencheon says: “It is definitely clear that public wellness is by far the very best investment we could make in regional, meaningful, resilient, sustainable communities in which it is just a much greater spot to reside.”

My aim is set the very same bells ringing in your head as the conversation in Jamaica Plain set ringing in mine. At its root, this calls for some joined-up contemplating. For instance, it no longer tends to make sense to search at food procurement in isolation from how a hospital’s grounds are managed, who manages them, what’s taking place in the wider neighborhood in terms of neighborhood foods, social prescribing inside the hospital and so on. We need to have to join these issues up. The positive aspects of performing so could tackle more concerns simultaneously than we may well have ever believed attainable. Public healthcare as the catalyst for a local financial revolution? Why not?

Rob Hopkins is co-founder of the Transition Network and Transition Town Totnes. You can go through a lot more of his pondering on this topic right here.

A big, juicy burger to anyone who is aware of what healthier eating is any longer | Owen Jones

Salad in a bowl.

Salad in a bowl. wel Photograph: Alamy

As somebody who once ate a bag of Mini Eggs for breakfast, I am in no place to champion a crusade against the evils of confectionery. But Tesco’s determination to eject sweets from their pride-of-location at checkouts is challenging not to applaud (although I’ll spare the standing ovation until finally it commences paying a living wage).

There is a lengthy-established consensus that obesity is 1 of the defining – and developing – well being crises of our age. It kills men and women, ruins people’s wellbeing, and charges massive sums to deal with. Youngster obesity in Britain is the highest in western Europe, and in between 2000 and 2009 the quantity of young people admitted to hospital with weight problems-connected conditions more than quadrupled. It charges the NHS £4.2bn to treat each 12 months.

The problem is this. Whilst we’re all agreed that scoffing sweets is a fool-proof means of trashing your overall health, I am now lost as to what constitutes a wholesome diet and lifestyle. Growing up it was easy: avoid consuming body fat if you will not, well, want to turn out to be body fat. As a teenager, I would down bottles of Frijj chocolate milkshake on the basis it was advertised as a “low-excess fat” drink. I have extended depended on Red Bulls to energy me through deadlines, but was just lately horrified to find out a 473ml can of the things includes no significantly less than 13 teaspoons of sugar. It does not just give you wings, but a belly, as well.

Now it truly is no longer fat that is public enemy number 1: it’s sugar. Not least due to the fact it hides in rather much every thing and is supremely addictive.

But then is will get difficult. The official recommendation is to consume at least five portions of fruit and veggies a day: then a University University London basis suggested that consuming at least seven would save lives. That’s a quite lofty ambition: in excess of the final couple of years, we have actually becoming consuming much less fruit and veg. The wellness benefits are clear: they incorporate tons of fibre (which also makes you come to feel total) and anti-oxidants, and decrease your chance of nasty diseases this kind of as a variety of cancers and heart ailment. But then there is the anti-fructose lobby, led by the likes of Dr Robert Lustig the Every day Mail, probably more predictably, has suggested also a lot fruit makes you fat. Others recommend extreme fruit consumption leads to every thing from dental decay to thinning hair. Oh boy!

The truth is you would have to eat a great deal of fruit to significantly injury your well being: even though staying away from fruit juices is a great move, since they are jam-packed with sugar. But the tips has been critically muddied because of the anti-sugar backlash. Then there’s carbohydrates: their reputation is all over the area, and we’re supposed to learn how to distinguish in between “very good” carbs and “undesirable” carbs.

Diets are even now routinely promoted, even even though there is a growing consensus that they are unhealthy, and lead only to temporary and unsustainable bodyweight reduction, demoralising any individual who tries them. But now even physical exercise for bodyweight loss is under fire: apparently if you go the fitness center, you just consume a lot more to reward oneself, cancelling out the effects. We’ve all done it: had a run and then tucked into a good huge burger, feeling guilt-free of charge.

Just to make it even a lot more complicated, we’re subjected to a continuous diet of unrealistic physique images – damaging our self-esteem (particularly amid ladies), but also driving us to lifestyles that are entirely counterproductive and damaging to our health. There is the environment to contemplate, too: and the world’s growing consumption of meat is driving up greenhouse gas emissions, as properly as meals charges.

What a complete mess. Removing sweets from the front of Tesco is a excellent symbolic gesture when it comes to selling wholesome lifestyles. But what we all need to have is a clear manual to what a healthier diet plan and life style would look like. At the second, we’re getting fed perplexing and contradictory statements. No wonder, then, that public awareness of the need to be wholesome – in an abstract sense – is better than it has ever been, and yet obesity is hurtling north. Unless of course the message is drastically simplified, our overall health is going to hold getting worse.

It is the two extremely light and practically indestructible, safeguarding laptops, cameras, and significantly much more. Now that practically all airlines charge for checked baggage, more and far more travelers are opting to carry-on and room is increasingly at a premium. As a outcome, as planes fill up, airlines typically force passengers to check out their roll aboards at the last minute. With a roll-aboard from ZeroHalliburton (shown, $ 900) you are covered both way: if you place it overhead you don’t have to be concerned about it acquiring crushed or broken as other passengers jam factors into the bins, and if you finish up checking it, your possessions could not be much more protected. Running &amp Biking GPS: There are plenty of fitness monitoring devices on the market place these days, but without having GPS you make massive compromises in abilities and accuracy. Counting methods is one particular point, counting true distance, along with elevation alterations and even accessing maps is a total yet another story. Industry leader Garmin tends to make the biggest lineup of active fitness GPS gadgets and just announced several key new models. For runners, the new Forerunner 15 is its lowest priced GPS-enabled operating view with heart fee keep track of and foot pod capabilities, as effectively as everyday exercise tracking. Comfy, High-Overall performance Ski Boots: Ski boots just hold receiving much better and greater with technological and anatomical advances, and if Mom’s pair is a small long in the tooth, it is most likely time for an improve. The ultimate investment in ski footwear is a really personalized pair, foamed around her foot to fit like a glove, but this is the most costly choice, requires visiting a specialist, and is tough to wrap up in a bow (see my in depth piece about purchasing customized ski boots right here at Forbes.com). If you want an out-of-the-box option, it is hard to go wrong with Rossignol’s new award-winning women’s Alltrack lineup. These boots won the 2014 Ski Magazine boot test in the Women’s Medium width category, with the comment “…amazed that a boot this roomy and comfortable could ski as properly as it does.” The lineup features Rossignol’s new OptiSensor 3DThinsualte liner, which is warmer and more cozy than ever. In any case, the lineup is between the most varied available for ladies, with anything for almost each skier type off the shelf (for the record, my wife went shopping without me at a effectively-regarded boot fitting specialty shop in Tahoe carrying numerous significant brand names, and after extensive testing and consultation, she purchased a pair of Rossignol women’s boots last winter, and not only does she adore them, but her skiing immediately enhanced).

Far better Sheets, Greater Rest: What Mom wouldn’t want the gift of much more rest? That’s’ the notion behind Sheex, a large-tech line of bedding that has borrowed from the technologically advanced world of high-functionality sports materials. Much better Filtered Water: Chances are the active mom drinks a whole lot of water, the two at residence and on the go, and even though it is not the sexiest gift, the new CamelBak Relay pitcher functions better and solves the inconveniences of common choices (I know because for the past numerous weeks I have been testing one particular in my fridge side by the side with the Britta pitcher I bought and had been making use of before). It fills much more rapidly (the company claims 10-instances faster), as quickly as you put water into it from the sink, so not like other models you really don’t have to fill it in stages and wait. It does this in portion by making use of a two-stage filtration method that filters water on the way in and the way out. It also has a fully locking lid that won’t fall off throughout pouring, one thing I’ve experienced ahead of. The form is a lot more functional, designed to match in most refrigerator doors, and it is BPA totally free and dish-washable. Even the filter replacement reminder is better, a rotating dial indicating months, a consumer pleasant improvement more than stickers that swiftly turn into ineffective ($ 37). If mom is far more of an adventurer out in the wilderness or journey traveling, take into account the high-tech All Clear water bottle, which turns a bottle of water anyplace in the world into safe consuming water in just 60 seconds making use of battery powered UV technological innovation. It’s like a water purification plant in your packet. I wrote about the All Clear in detail for my 2013 Vacation Gift Gide for travelers, here at Forbes.com ($ 99).
