3 Ways To Naturally Clean Your Teeth

A lot of people seem to neglect the amazing properties that most natural products have when it comes to treating a variety of health issues – whether in their organic forms or when processed into a natural product or supplement. I think one surprising area where natural products are highly effective, is oral hygiene.  – And it’s one of the most important factors in keeping your body healthy and well regulated. As a matter of fact, recent studies have shown that roughly 80-85% of bacteria that can cause or lead to heart disease are found in our mouths and the plague that forms there! So it’s important to keep your mouth clean for more reasons than simply having a nice smile or fresh breath.

Like most of us, I’ve used normal fluoride based toothpaste for most of my life – largely because I never really knew there were any alternatives and secondly because I never thought there was anything wrong with them – even though one of the most obvious downsides of using fluoride toothpaste happened to me after every rinse. I’m referring to that dry, cotton-like feeling that happens to your mouth after you rinse when using the paste. It’s really uncomfortable and can actually worsen your breath – rather ironically.

As I grew up, I used to treat this with antibacterial mouthwash which worked a bit, but still left me with a dry mouth and sensitive teeth afterwards. There are other toothpastes or mouth products that are designed to help tooth sensitivity, but these cost a small fortune and still leave you with a dry mouth. It was at this point that I started researching natural methods of keeping your teeth clean and what I found really surprised me. There are so much cheaper, non-toxic and purely organic methods out there, that I still don’t really know why most of us are using standard mouth care products. So, in an attempt to open your eyes to countless healthy and cost-saving options out there, I’ve listed a 3 of them below – and hope you’ll work for you as they have for me.

Oil Pulling

This is one of the oldest oral hygiene techniques in human history and has been used in Ayurvedic healing practices for more that 3000 years! Anything that’s managed to stand the test of time for that long must have some element of truth behind it – but after trying it myself, and I can definitely confirm that it works. It’s real simple too!

Basically, oil pulling is just swishing an oil around in your mouth for 15-20 minutes and then rinsing it out. It works as a natural antibacterial mouthwash and helps to extract any germs or bacteria that may be lingering in your gums or cavities, as well as ridding you of bad breath and even helping to treat acne by stimulating cell regeneration in the skin layer around your mouth.

I recommend using Coconut, Canola, Sesame or Olive oil for this process. You can even mix a few drops of essential oil into the oil to strengthen its healing properties and help ward off any bacteria. Oils such as peppermint, tea tree or eucalyptus work like a charm in your mouth and will also give you fresher smelling breath.

Natural Toothpaste

A great way to get the same effect on your teeth as you do with normal toothpaste is to switch your fluoride based option, with a homemade DIY recipe that is as effective as the shelf-bought stuff, it’s just a lot healthier and won’t dry your mouth out either!

To do this, all you will need is:

– ½ cup of Coconut Oil
– 3 tablespoons of Baking Powder or 4 tablespoons of Xylitol
– 20 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
– 10 drops of Eucalyptus or Tea Tree Oil
-A small glass jar or sturdy plastic container

Making the toothpaste couldn’t be easier! All you have to do is melt the coconut oil in a pot or pan. Once the oil is in liquid form, add all the other ingredients starting with the baking powder/xylitol and then pouring in the essential oils. Make sure you keep stirring the liquid so that all the ingredients dissolve into the mixture. Now, take the pot or pan off the heat and allow the mixture to cool. As it begins to harden, decant the mixture into the the glass or plastic container and store in a cool, dry cupboard out of direct sunlight.

To use, simply dip your toothbrush into the jar and spread a little on the bristles. Then simply brush normally and rinse afterwards. And voila! DIY natural toothpaste alternative!

Natural Strawberry Teeth Whitener

Over the years, the amount of tannins that our teeth come into contact with through the food we eat, wine, tea and coffee that we eat is immense! What are tannins you might ask? These are naturally occurring compounds (polyphenols) that add colour to certain foods as well as the rinds of certain fruits. They generally occur in food produced from plants and are strong natural antioxidants – so are really great for flushing out any toxins in your bloodstream.

However, the one downside to tannins is that they cause discolouration in our teeth and often cause them to go yellow over time. Some people turn to really expensive teeth whitening treatments that generally make your teeth look unnaturally white and also involve the use of some really nasty chemicals.

I recommend using a strawberry teeth whitener on  daily basis as a way of prolonging tooth discolouration and saving you a tonne of cash on costly teeth whitening treatments. It’s literally as easy as crushing up about 4-5 strawberries and rubbing the paste on your teeth. Then simply rinse the paste off and you’ll start seeing the results quickly. I recommend doing this after brushing with your natural toothpaste and oil pulling in the morning (so just before you go to bed). Plus you’ll always have strawberries around the house which is a huge bonus!

Ultimately, oral hygiene is one of the most important aspects of leading a healthy life – anyone who’s ever had toothache or a serious abscess will tell you that. Yet leading a healthy life shouldn’t mean forking out heaps of cash for treatments that make you feel uncomfortable or are made up of ingredients that you can hardly pronounce, let alone understand. As with most things in life, there’s generally a healthier, natural alternative that can save you money and keep you healthier for longer – all you have to do is make the switch. I’ve been using natural oral hygiene products for some time now and have only had success.

So I always say why not give them a chance? They cost less and can only do good – worst case scenario is that they don’t work as well as you’d like them to and you go back to what you were doing, but if you follow the recipes correctly you should have nothing but a clean smile, fresh breath and more cash in your wallet at the end of each month.

Clogged Heart Artery – You Can Reverse It Naturally

Many people today rely on their doctors to prescribe harmful drugs, including statins to treat their clogged heart arteries. When the blockage becomes worse they opt to install a stent to improve the blood flow.

Another invasive option is to go for a bypass surgery, which sometimes makes them die faster due to complications which many times we hear due to infections.

Unacceptable Excuses

Is that so? I am not a heart surgeon but I think an impaired cell repair that results in the newly sewn artery does not adhere as it should to the heart artery can be one the cause of the complications.

How many times have you ever heard about this post-heart surgery complication possibility from your relatives, friends, or neighbors? Maybe rarely or NONE.

Of course, after prescribing you appropriate drugs or after you are discharged from hospitals where a stent has been placed into your arteries or a bypass surgery has taken place, your doctors would advise you on how you should adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Another Attack

Unfortunately, after a few months or years, you are struck by another harsh heart attack. You would have dedicatedly been taking the drugs and adopting the healthy lifestyle as suggested but it seems something goes wrong somewhere.

You don’t know what it is. If you ask your doctor what might have gone wrong with the prescribed drugs he would probably say that the drugs were carefully tested by scientists for their efficacies before being approved by the FDA. So, you go home and continue to take the drugs for many more years.

Do you have other options perhaps alternative ones that can replace the ‘wonder drugs’ that might trigger a heart attack and serious damage to liver and kidneys?

The Answer is YES

If you take high strength statins you are 34% more likely to end up hospitalized with kidney issues, experts say.

Mayo clinic expert suggests that although you know statin side effects can be annoying consider the benefits of taking a statin before you decide to stop taking your medication. He further asserts that you should talk to your doctor so he may be able to come up with an alternative treatment plan that can help you lower your cholesterol without uncomfortable side effects.

What he tries to convey about the alternative treatment is that your doctor might suggest other types of statins with ‘less side effects.’ Really?

Since you have been reading my article this far, why don’t you read thru the rest of the article so that you can get some idea as to how natural remedies can help you to reverse your clogged arteries.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Most of the lifestyle elements I discuss below might have already been conveyed to you by your doctors or your friends. Anyway, some of the details can be a bit different from what you have heard. So, read on with an open mind.

Oxidative Stress

Oxidative occurs when antioxidants are lacking to neutralize free radicals effectively. Excess free radicals due to oxidative stress can eventually lead to oxidative damage.

Damage done by free radicals to cell membrane molecules can result in atherosclerosis (plaque build-up).

The followings are things you can do to prevent oxidative stress.

Avoid Sugar

Added sugar, high fructose corn syrup, grains (rice, wheat, and others), and processed carbs, all of which can cause oxidative stress. These are foods you need to avoid.

Avoid Fried Foods

Vegetable oils such as sunflower, corn, and soy are categorized as polyunsaturated fats as they contain two or more double bonds in their fatty acid molecules. The double bonds are easily oxidized when during production, shipment, storage, cooking, and in your body.

If oxidized polyunsaturated fats are parts of your arterial cell membranes, then proteins in the membranes, including calcium channel are prone to being malfunctioning. This results in too much calcium getting into your arterial cells and cannot get out due to malfunction, then your endothelial and intimal cells would end up clogged up by calcium.

This build-up is what most scientists and doctors call as cholesterol build-up. Funny isn’t it?

So, avoid using these vegetable oils in cooking. Use healthier cooking oil such as extra virgin coconut oil, palm oil, and coconut oil.

A recent research has shown that eating fried fish can increase your risk of heart disease. Study authors think that fried fish itself is at fault. Instead, eating fried fish may be a litmus test that indicates an unhealthy lifestyle, which is more likely to lead to heart disease.

Note: As all cooking oils get oxidized when heated, and oxidized oils can leed to oxidative stress, then avoiding fried foods altogether would be best if you wish to accelerate your heart disease reversal.

Avoid Processed Foods

Artificial colorings are one of the additives in processed foods thought to cause oxidative stress. Other ingredients such as hydrogenated fats and acrylamides in crackers, muffins, and cakes are also thought to cause similar thing.

Quit Smoking

Smoking won’t benefit you in any way. Period.

Cigarette smoke contains hundreds or perhaps thousands of chemical compounds containing benzene rings that can cause oxidative stress. If you smoke try to find ways to quit today.

Drink or Quit

Resveratrol contents in red wine are revered as potent antioxidants, Red wine is said to be better in term of antioxidant activities compared to white wine.

How about alcohol content in wine? It is changed to ethanol, an aldehyde that is very harmful to your cells! It is said to be cytotoxic, meaning it can damage any cells in your body, including that of your arteries.

That’s why some experts believe that drinking little alcohol also can harm your health. To them, quitting might be the best choice.

Avoid Overeating

Overeating makes your liver work harder to detoxify chemical contents in your foods. If you make overeating as a habit, you would really burden your liver to work harder and harder.

Habitual overeating is believed can cause toxic overload that circulates in your bloodstream throughout your body, including your heart. The circulating toxins usually are in the form of free radicals (unfinished detox due to too many foods you consumed over time that lacking appropriate antioxidants to neutralize them) that can cause damage to your heart’s arterial cell membrane components.

Manage Stress Well

Chronic stress is associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. Managing your stress can help reduce cortisol, hence prevents oxidative stress.

Eat Lots of Fruits and Veggies

Antioxidants are vital in helping your body to detoxify efficiently as well as helping your body’s natural antioxidants such as glutathione and superoxide dismutase to do their jobs in neutralizing free radicals.

Assorted fruits and veggies are loaded with potent antioxidants. Eat them in every meal and nibble on them when you feel to snack on something.

Other Details

You may explore further details on the healthy lifestyle by reading my article titled Healthy Living – Definition and How to Go About It.

Herbal Interventions

Honey elixir containing ginger, garlic, lemon, apple cider vinegar and honey may help reverse clogged arteries, hence reverses your heart disease.

Liquid lime extract taken regularly, thrice per day, is also believed to help reverse clogged arteries.

A teaspoonful of clove powder taken with ghee or whole milk, twice per day, can also help reverse the clogged arteries. It is best taken along with a teaspoonful of Triphala Churna (powder).

Fatty Liver – You Can Reverse It Naturally

All this while, you have probably been more concerned about preventing “fatty deposits” to your heart which can cause heart attacks that may result in death. Actually, you should take care of your liver from being congested by fats, conditions known as fatty livers as well as.

If isn’t addressed, fatty liver can progress to more serious liver disease and other health problems.

Fatty liver refers to a term used to describe the condition of the liver that has accumulated excess fat for one reason or another.

The condition is actually relatively common. In other words, anybody including you can experience it at any point in of your life.

No Symptoms

You can experience fatty liver without knowing it because according to Harvard experts it usually causes no symptoms and a few if any, complications. However, some people with NAFLD go on to develop irreversible liver damage that can result in liver failure and cirrhosis.

In cases with symptoms, besides inflammation, it causes several symptoms where in some cases the liver becomes inflamed and develops scars.

Fatigue, pain in the upper right abdomen, and weight loss are other common symptoms.

It is normal to have a tiny amount of fat in your liver cells. If your liver contains 5% or more fat, then it is considered fatty.

While drinking alcohol excessively was once considered to be a risk for fatty liver disease, on the other hand, in many cases it does not play a role.

NAFLD

A number of fatty liver conditions fall under the broad category of non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD),

Harvard expert view on NAFLD,

‘Almost unheard of before 1980, NAFLD is now believed to affect as many as 30% of adult Americans and is expected to become the main reason for the liver transplant by 2022. NAFLD is not a single disease but rather a spectrum of disorders, all marked by the accumulation of fat inside liver cells.’

Non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in adults and children in Western countries, under which a number of fatty liver conditions fall.

NASH

Good news is NAFL is the initial, reversible stage of liver disease. However, as it often goes undiagnosed, over time, NAFL may lead to a more serious liver condition known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH.

NASH is characterized by greater fat accumulation and inflammation leading to liver cell damages. As liver cells are repeatedly injured and die off, it can eventually result in fibrosis or scar tissue. NASH greatly increases the risk of cirrhosis (advanced scarring of the liver) and liver cancer.

Causes

Several factors have been determined the possible causes of fatty liver:

Obesity: Obesity involves low-grade inflammation and metabolic syndrome that may promote liver fat storage.

Excess belly fat: Having normal weight with visceral obesity is prone to develop fatty liver.

Insulin resistance: Studies have shown that insulin resistance and high insulin levels (hyperinsulinemia) to increase liver fat storage in people with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

High intake of refined carbs: Refined carb frequent intakes promote liver fat storage, especially when excessive amounts are consumed by overweight or insulin-resistant individuals.

Sugary beverage consumption:  Most soda and energy drinks are high in fructose (simple sugar), which has been shown to cause liver fat storage in children and adults.

Impaired gut health: Leaky gut or other gut health issues caused by an imbalance in the gut microbiota may contribute to NAFLD development.

Drug intakes: Certain drugs taken over long-term can cause steatosis (accumulation of fat in the liver).

Note: Some people can develop NAFLD even without these risk factors. In my opinion, If they take drugs over time, however, this can be the possible cause (most doctors would never admit this).

Fatty Liver Symptoms

Fatty liver symptoms include fatigue and weakness, slight pain or fullness in the right or center abdominal area, elevated levels of liver enzymes (including AST and ALT), elevated insulin levels, and elevated triglyceride levels.

NASH Symptoms

NASH symptoms include loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting, moderate to severe abdominal pain, and yellowing of eyes and skin.

Treatment

From modern medicine perspective, there’s no cure for fatty liver or NASH. Treatment is usually aimed at reducing or preventing further fatty buildup and addressing underlying risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Key strategies include lifestyle changes, medications (anti-inflammatory drugs), vitamin E, and liver protection.

As for liver protection, Dr. Kathleen Corey, director of the Fatty Liver Disease Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital suggests avoiding herbal supplements, including those sold for liver health, because she thinks they may be toxic to the liver.

Very funny! But they allow certain types of drugs such as anti-inflammatory to be used.

HOME REMEDY

1.Lose weight and avoid overeating

Stay lean, losing weight if you are overweight, and eating foods in normal portions may help balance lipid profile. An imbalanced lipid profile is linked to fatty liver.

2. Cut back on carbs, especially refined carbs

Refined carbs cause metabolic syndrome, one of which is an imbalance in lipid profile that is linked to fatty liver.

Eat nutritious diets and add more fruits and veggies to your diet

Avoid processed foods, charred foods, fried foods especially deep-fried, and avoid food colorings.

Studies have shown these foods may help reverse fatty liver, including monounsaturated fats, whey protein, green tea, and soluble fiber.

3. Avoid drugs

Avoid drugs as they can increase fat storage. See ‘drug intake’ under Causes.

4. Physical activity

Endurance exercise or resistance training performed several times a week have been shown to significantly reduce the amount of fat stored in liver cells, regardless of whether weight loss occurs.

5. Manage stress

Stress, especially chronic stress is linked to inflammation, which may exacerbate the fatty liver condition. Therefore, managing stress should be a top priority of lifestyle changes.

5. Take supplements

Take cordyceps, milk thistle, colloidal silver, and cod liver oil every day as they may be very helpful.

Apple cider vinegar is said to be one of the best remedies for fatty liver disease.

10 Tips: Boost Serotonin Levels Naturally & Feel Happier

Millions are Diagnosed with depression every year,  and it is time we begin feeling happier without relying on medication.

As defined by psychologists, a person has a major depressive episode when he or she has symptoms of major depressive disorder, including depressed mood or feelings of emptiness, hopelessness or irritability, that last for two weeks or more.  And, according to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) found that the number of people diagnosed with depression has increased by 450% since 1987. It is often recommended that we start taking a medication to reduce symptoms. However, medication often comes with sometimes dangerous side-effects. Here are some simple ways to feel happier without needing to take a pill.

1. Get enough vitamin B6 – foods like spinach, turnip greens, garlic, cauliflower, mustard greens, celery, fish (especially tuna, halibut, salmon, cod and snapper), poultry (chicken and turkey) and lean beef tenderloin.

2. Eat brain boosting seed grains instead of wheat. This includes: Amaranth, buckwheat, millet and quinoa are seeds with grain-like taste and properties. These are healthy, high-protein carbohydrates and small amounts of the right carbohydrates are critical to boosting serotonin.

Not only improve mood, you will Sleep better too. A nice dose of serotonin in the early evening will help you sleep better at night.

These grain-like seeds also provide important B vitamins. As just mentioned B vitamins play a critical role in brain health and in the manufacture of all your neurotransmitters including serotonin.Vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B6 (pyridoxine) as well as vitamin D, folic acid and selenium plus calcium, and magnesium are needed to make serotonin.

For protein meals: focus on digestion and food combining – Eating foods that are high in protein – and specifically have a higher percentage of tryptophan (like turkey, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds), will provide much needed tryptophan, the precursor to serotonin. But beware: because research shows that eating protein with carbohydrates actually works against your ability to make serotonin.

Good to know: Plant based protein helps to create more serotonin than animal protein does.

To boost your mood and immunity naturally, protein and probiotics – is the delicious natural answer!

3. Include fermented foods and drinks in your diet – Fermented foods and drinks greatly assist in digestion and assimilation of all the important nutrients you need for serotonin. Additionally, they boost the nutrients in your food by at least a hundred fold.

4. Get massages and other forms of body work – We’ve heard about the healing power of touch, but now research backs it up! A study conducted by the Touch Research Institutes at the University of Miami School of Medicine shows that massage increases serotonin by 28% and decreases cortisol (the stress hormone) by 31%.

5. Have fun in the sun. Early morning sunlight is more intense and this can boost your body’s production of melatonin in the evening. Serotonin converts to melatonin for a great night’s sleep. Getting outside for a 20-minute walk in the early morning sunlight can boost your mood and improve your sleep!

6. Remove toxins from your life that interfere with brain health. Eat foods like dandelion and citrus fruit to help detox daily.

7. Reduce Stress – prolonged physical or emotional stress produce adrenaline and cortisol, which interfere with serotonin. Shifting your lifestyle and adding more relaxation into your week can make a huge difference. Focus on Emotional Healing – Reducing stress and focusing on spending more time relaxing is a first step to boosting serotonin. You can take this even further by taking action in key areas to remove negative emotions like fear, guilt and anger. Meditate & do yoga!

8. Exercise. A comprehensive review of the relation between exercise and mood concluded that antidepressant and anxiolytic effects have been clearly demonstrated. In the United Kingdom the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, which works on behalf of the National Health Service and makes recommendations on treatments according to the best available evidence, has published a guide on the treatment of depression.

9. Eliminate processed sugar (or at least drastically reduce it) – If you have low serotonin, you may have intense cravings for sugar. This is your body’s way of trying to increase serotonin because eating sugar produces insulin, which helps tryptophan go into your brain. However, too much sugar can eventually cause addiction to sugar, insulin resistance, hypoglycemia and type 2 diabetes.

Instead, satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy way with pure maple syrup, coconut sugar or pure honey.

What Is Vertigo and How You Can Treat It Naturally

Even if we all feel dizzy every now and then, people who struggle with vertigo have to experience constant dizzy spells, in which they feel like either their head is spinning, or their entire body is. Sometimes, ever if they’re standing completely still, they can experience the feeling that their surroundings are spinning. Today, we’re going to talk about the two types of vertigo that exist, the cause and symptoms of vertigo, and what you can do to prevent and treat this condition.

Types of Vertigo

According to whether you feel like you’re spinning or like your surroundings are, you’re experiencing a different kind of vertigo. Subjective vertigo is what you’re suffering from when you feel like your body is moving. Objective vertigo is the feeling that the world around you is moving.

Causes of Vertigo

Especially since many people who experience vertigo are unaware of it, often confusing it with simple dizziness, the causes are also unknown for them. Still, there are some factors that could cause vertigo. Some of the most common ones are:

  • Reduction of blood flow: A reduction in your blood flow can have many causes in itself. Its symptoms can include walking difficulties, dizziness, and headaches, which are all signs you’re suffering from vertigo.

  • Injuries: If you’ve injured yourself in the head and neck region, you’re likely to experience vertigo. However, the symptoms won’t be permanent.

  • Acoustic neuroma: An acoustic neuroma is a tumor in the nerve tissues that can lead to vertigo.

  • Ear inflammation: If your inner ear becomes inflamed, you might start suffering from vertigo as well. Moreover, you’ll also experience loss of hearing as another symptom of vertigo.

  • Migraines: Apart from giving you a severe headache, migraines can also lead to vertigo.

  • Multiple sclerosis: This disease interferes with the communication between your body and brain, and can make you experience vertigo.

Symptoms of Vertigo

  • Disorientation

  • Nausea

  • Difficulties in speaking

  • Abnormal eye movements

  • Hearing loss

  • Blurred vision

  • Sweating

  • Weakness

  • Loss of consciousness

How to Treat Vertigo

Fortunately, vertigo is not a serious condition, and can be treated fairly easy. This doesn’t mean that you should neglect treating it, because left untreated, it can become debilitating. Before undergoing treatment, you should consult with a physician who can tell you what the best way to treat vertigo is according to the causes and the symptoms you’re experiencing. Among the most popular drug treatment options for vertigo are:

  • Diazepam

  • Meclizine hydrochloride

  • Promethazine hydrochloride

  • Scopolamine transdermal patch

  • Diphenhydramine

Natural Remedies for Vertigo

If your physician approves a natural treatment forvertigo, either combined with prescribed medication or by itself, here are some natural remedies that can help you treat this condition:

Ginger Tea

According to scientific research, the ginger root is a great natural remedy for vertigo. We recommend you to steep some ginger roots in boiling water for 5 minutes. If the taste of ginger doesn’t particularly appeal to you, you can also add some raw honey to your tea. Drink two cups of this mixture every day for the best results.

Almonds and Milk

Vitamin E and B, which almonds contain, are great for treating vertigo. Use filtered water to soak four almonds overnight, and then grind them in the morning. Mix the resulting paste with a glass of milk and enjoy the beverage.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey

Another great combination for treating vertigo is apple cider vinegar and honey. Mix two parts raw honey with one part unpasteurized apple cider vinegar and drink one tablespoon three times a day.

We hope today’s guide has helped you understand what vertigo is and how it manifests itself. The natural remedies we provided you with above are not the only ones you can try. Research your own and learn how to treat yourself with advanced natural vertigo treatments.

The Benefits of Waking Up Naturally and How To Make It Happen

Are you one of those people who presses snooze for an hour every morning before you’re able to stumble out of bed? Maybe you set your alarm for 7 a.m. and don’t end up actually dragging yourself to the kitchen for your first cup of coffee until 8 a.m.

Even if you’re not hitting snooze, you might also be one of those people who goes to bed at a reasonable hour every night and gets a solid eight hours of sleep, yet you still don’t feel ready to get out of the bed in the morning. Instead of feeling refreshed, you might feel like you’re barely able to put your feet on the floor, despite the fact that you logically know you got plenty of sleep.

One reason you might not be getting the best sleep you can, or you have difficulty waking up in the morning? It could be because you’re using an alarm clock.

You’re probably wondering if not using an alarm clock is even an option, after all, how would you ever get up without it?

For many people, they’ve discovered it’s better for them to learn to wake up naturally, based on their bodies rhythms, rather than struggling and repeatedly hitting snooze.

To begin, the following are some health and lifestyle advantages to being someone who wakes up naturally.

  • You can get into a more restful, deep sleep when you’re not always staring at the alarm clock or feeling anxiety as to when it’s going to start going off.

  • Your body is designed to wake up in a particular state of sleep, and that’s not during REM, which is the fifth stage. Instead, your body is programmed to perform optimally when you wake up during the light sleep stages, which are usually stages one and two. An alarm clock doesn’t differentiate between light and deep sleep, so you might be waking up when it’s harder for your body to start functioning, which can be why you’re so groggy even if you had eight solid hours of sleep the night before.

  • If you are awoken during deep sleep, rather than naturally, it can impact everything from short-term memory to cognitive ability according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

So what are the steps you should take to get a better night’s sleep and over time train yourself to wake up in a more gentle, healthy and natural way?

Know How Much Sleep You Need

One of the first things to do before you ever start trying to wake up with an alarm clock is to get an understanding of how much sleep your body needs. Most people require between seven and nine hours, but this can vary.

Most people are only getting around six hours of sleep a night, and that’s a big part of many of the health problems we face.

To find out what you need, try to give yourself some time on vacation or during a weekend to sleep as much as your body wants. Wake up completely naturally and count about how long you slept. That will give you a good baseline, and you can then start adjusting your bedtime accordingly.

Create a Bedtime Routine

Waking up naturally is all about retraining your body to work the way it’s supposed to, and that includes having a bedtime routine.

Once you know the optimal time for you to go to bed, create a plan for how you’ll fall asleep more quickly and comfortably at that time each night. Maybe it’s a little stretching or certain music you listen to. Whatever it is, it needs to be part of what you do each and every night.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

Is there anything smart home technology can’t do, including making it easier for you to wake up naturally?

If you have a programmable thermostat, consider setting it to start gradually warming up in your house around the time you need to wake up. The reason our bodies like to fall asleep when it’s cooler is because that indicates it’s evening and time to sleep.

Then, as it starts to warm, our bodies begin to sense the daytime is starting, therefore making it more natural for us to get out of bed.

Make Use of Light

If you’re someone who sleeps in a room with heavy curtains, you might consider leaving them cracked so you can see the natural morning light as the sun starts to rise.

Another choice, if leaving your curtains cracked would like street or car lights in during the night, is to use a wake-up light.

Wake up lights can be placed beside your bed, and they’re designed to help your body follow its natural circadian rhythm, which can be off balance from stress and other triggers common in our daily lives. When you’re exposed to light in the morning that’s similar to natural light, it tells your body to start waking up, and it can also support your hormones and balance your melatonin.

Once you’ve got all the above in place, it will take time to get your routine where you need it to be, so be patient. When you’re first working on developing more natural sleep patterns, you can set a backup alarm, but if you stick with your routine you should not only be able to ditch the alarm, but also feel better about waking up.
