Twelve essential oils that fight cancer and boost immunity

One-third of American’s are seeking alternative medicine for either their sole medical treatment or for complementary medical treatment.  People are often incorporating vitamins, fish oil, probiotics, melatonin, deep breathing, yoga, or chiropractic care into their natural health arsenal.  It appears that natural health care trends are only projected to keep growing. (1)

One-third of Americans are seeking alternative medicine

The organic food market is expected to grow 14 percent between the years of 2013-2018 and the global essential oil market is expected to reach 11.67 billion dollars by 2022. (2,3)

Essential oils have been utilized in numerous cultures for decades to help remedy disease.  Essentials oils may have gained their appeal through their pleasant scents but will maintain their longevity due to research and the growing demand for alternative medicine.

Different varieties of Frankincense oil found to kill bladder cancer, breast cancer and skin cancer cells

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences found that different types of frankincense oils are effective at killing cancer cells.  Boswellia carteri has been found to target cancerous cells in bladder tumors, killing them and leaving healthy cells alone.  Boswellia sacramay is thought to be effective in breast cancer prevention as well as for advanced breast cancers.  Boswellia sacrais is an effective and non-invasive treatment for basal cell carcinoma. Boswellia carteri and Santalum album both kill cancer cells in different ways, when combined they form a strong alliance to annihilate cancer. (4)

The Top 10 Essential Oils For Skin Care And Health

Almond, Orange, Lemongrass, Frankincense, Ylang Ylang, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Lavender, Rosemary, Lemon
I’m pretty sure that you’ve all heard of, or at least encountered essential oils at some point in your life. Whether through a friend or family member, at the gym, in the kitchen or through your own means of research, essential oils have been with us for hundreds if not thousands of years. They’ve been utilized throughout history for a variety of reasons, from physical and mental health care to spiritual healing and meditation. They’re incredibly powerful and all natural and are making quite the comeback in modern society.

If you’re reading this article, then you’re probably interested in natural and holistic products/solutions for one reason or another. In most cases, we’ve become disillusioned by the expensive and sometimes even harmful products that you’ll find on shelves in cosmetics stores or supermarkets around the world – especially with regards to skin care. Many have started turning to holistic or organic products as a way of treating their skin and health issues because they have no adverse side-effects, are often much cheaper than the products in the store and generally encourage a greener, more environmentally conscious lifestyle – something we should all be aware off.

Essential oils are particularly useful for treating and maintaining a healthy skin tone and an overall better complexion. They’re packed full of natural phytonutrients, minerals and vitamins (which are diluted into all on-the-shelf products) that keep your skin feeling fresh, clean and promote strong cell growth. But the beauty of most essential oils (or at least the one’s I’ll be discussing in this article), is that they also contain potent natural antibacterial and antiseptic qualities that kill off any free-radicals or bacteria that could lead to or worsen skin irritation and infection. So keep reading to find out more!

Top 10 Essential Oils for Skin Care

(Please note that this list is in no particular order of rank – these are simply the top 10 essential oils that I would recommend for treating your skin in general)

1.) Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet almond oil is truly one of nature’s most divine gifts and can be used as a potent natural alternative for treating skin affected by acne or maintaining the general healthiness of your skin. It is rich in Vitamin E, A, B and Omega 9 – both nourish and revitalize your skin, stimulating skin cell growth and also act as strong antioxidants, helping to flush your skin of any harmful toxins as well as neutralizing any free-radical molecules that may degenerate skin cell growth.

Free-radicals occur as a part of our daily lives and are produced by the food we eat (fatty foods), general air pollution, aerosol deodorants and even medication we take. They are one of the main causes of cell damage and it’s important to flush them out regularly with water (drink a lot of it) and lot’s of natural antioxidants. Almond oil has a very low comedogenic rating, so can be applied to your skin without the worry of having it clog your pores. In fact, it helps to clear out your pores and remove any excess skin cells or oil that might lead to blemishes or blackheads.

2.) Orange Essential Oil

This is one of my personal favourites as it has a great scent and is a very effective natural treatment for a variety of skin types. As we all know, oranges are a strong source of Vitamin C – an essential for keeping everything from your immune system to your skin cells strong and healthy.

The high content of hesperetin, naringenin, anthocyanins and hydroxycinnamic acids make the essential oil of the orange an incredibly powerful antioxidant – good for clearing your skin of any toxins. The strong citrus qualities of orange essential oil also make it highly effective in cutting through the oil on your skin’s surface and clearing your pores of any excess oil that may clog your pores – a common issue with naturally oily skin types.

I recommend using the oil as a natural toner, by applying it with a swab of cotton and wiping the excess oil and skin cells off your skin. When you’re done, rinse the oil off with warm water. However, orange oil also has a very low comedogenic rating – which means you can leave it in overnight to rehydrate and soothe your skin, without the worry of clogging your pores.

3.) Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass is quite popular in a variety of ways. In it’s natural form, it is often used as a herb or natural flavorant in many forms of Asian cuisine (especially in beef and poultry dishes as well as soups) and is quite popular as an additive to teas. It is a strong antioxidant and is very effective for uplifting your spirits and strengthening your immune system.

Lemongrass essential oil is even more potent because it is a concentrated form of the essential chemical compounds and phytonutrients that make the herb so effective as a natural remedy. Lemongrass is a natural astringent – which means that it causes the tightening of skin cells and tissue and can be used to help remove or reduce the signs of aging by lifting and tightening the skin tissue – reducing the effects of wrinkles. The added effect of this is that it can help to seal your pores, reducing the risk of blockage or further blemishes.

Lemongrass also has strong antiseptic or antibacterial qualities which makes it effective in removing harmful bacteria that may cause irritation or infection on the surface of your skin. By reducing the amount of malign bacteria that you have on your skin’s surface, you also reduce the signs of inflammation and redness that often accompany irritated skin which will give your skin a healthier looking complexion and a more rounded tone.

4.) Frankincense Essential Oil

This oil has been known to us for thousands of years for it’s incredible healing and antibacterial qualities as well as being highly regarded for spiritual reasons. In fact, it formed the basis of most of ancient medicine and at one point was worth more than gold! The reasons for frankincense oil’s popularity is largely due to its antibacterial qualities, as well as its ability to heal wounds and promote skin tissue regeneration.

Basically, the oil acts as a natural cicatrisant, which means that it helps scars to heal faster by tightening the skin tissue around the affected area, allowing nutrients, carried in our blood cells, to be directed to wound and speed up the healing process. This makes it very useful for healing superficial marks and wounds on your face (such as acne scars) and helping you achieve a healthier complexion faster. I recommend utilising frankincense oil with sweet almond or lavender oil for the best results.

5.) Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang (pronounced EE-Lang EE-Lang) essential oil is very popular in the cosmetic and fragrance industries for its decadent top-note scent. In fact, it’s one of the key ingredients in the famous ‘Chanel No.5’ perfume. It has a floral yet citrusy odor that will leave your skin feeling and smelling fresh and beautiful all day long.

But the amazing properties of Ylang Ylang oil don’t stop with it’s scent. The oil is also highly concentrated in natural antiseptic sesquiterpenes and other antibacterial agents, which make it helpful in reducing and removing harmful bacteria and toxins that gather on the surface of your skin over the course of the day.

By treating your skin regularly against these harmful bacteria, you reduce the possibility of infection and improve your skin’s tone and complexion by relieving it of irritation and redness. The oil also works well as a natural toner and will leave your skin hydrated and moisturized. Ylang Ylang also works well as an anti-seborrhoeic – which means that it works to reduce the sebum oil that your skin produces and often clogs up your pores when left untreated. By regulating the amount of oil your skin produces, you prevent the chances blocked pores and thus additional blemishes or blackheads.

6.) Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint has a very familiar and nostalgic scent and taste that I’m pretty sure we’ve all encountered at some point in our lives. It’s tasty and tremendously healthy – but also great for treating your skin surprisingly enough!

The chemical components of peppermint essential oil are what make it so effective as an skin care remedy. It has high levels of menthol, limonene and 1,8-cineole which make it a strong natural antiseptic agent (great for killing of germs that might worsen any skin irritation) as well as helping your skin cells regenerate and renew the tissue affected by sores or blemishes. Limonene and 1,8-cineole are key compounds of Vitamin E which is essential to regulating and maintaining a healthy complexion. So use it regularly to ensure maximum effect.

To apply Peppermint oil, I recommend a steam treatment first (3-5 minutes of steam to your face) to open your pores, then wipe away any bacteria, excess oil or dead skin cells with the oil on a fresh cotton swab. Rinse your face with cool water to help close your pores again, and allow your skin to rest. Repeat this roughly 2-3 times a week to ensure a healthier complexion in no time.

7.) Tea Tree Essential Oil

As a rule of thumb, I do not recommend that anyone use foundation or concealer on a regular basis. Of course, this is just my opinion – I can’t force you to do anything with regards to your own body. However, it has been proven that they generally worsen your skin by clogging your pores and causing blemishes that are unsightly which, in turn, make you use more foundation or concealer and so on. A bit of a cruel vicious cycle which is best avoided.

However, if you do find that you need to apply make-up or foundation (for whatever reason), then I highly recommend using tea tree oil as a natural make-up remover. It’s highly effective in cutting through the layers of make-up and fully removing any traces of it from the surface of your skin, as well as clearing out your pores – preventing a build up of comedogenic material and allowing your skin to breath. Tea tree oil is also a strong natural anti-septic and can be used to keep your skin free on any bacteria that may gather over the course your day and lead to infections or skin irritation.

The oil is also a magnificent alternative to the common chemical acne treatment known as benzoyl peroxide as it helps to reduce skin irritation, but it’s important not to overuse the oil as it can dry out your skin. So controlled and regulated doses are best – roughly 2-3 drops maximum a day should be fine. A final word of advice when using tea tree oil is that you should try and stay out of direct sunlight for an hour after applying the oil as it is sensitive to UV rays and can damage your skin’s pigments when exposed to direct sunlight.

8.) Lavender Essential Oil

Everyday, our skin is exposed to the sun – it’s generally an unavoidable issue. The sun emits harmful UV (ultra-violet) rays that lead to free-radical damage on the surface of our skin, enhance the effects of aging and depending on how long we’re exposed to the light directly, can even cause burns or irritation.

Utilizing lavender oil with a mixture of aloe vera oil or frankincense oil makes for a strong treatment for free-radical damage due to the high antioxidant content of these oils. The antioxidants effectively contain and remove the free-radical molecules before a chain reaction process can begin and the damage can be done.

By applying lavender oil to sunburns or minor cuts can also help the healing process as the antimicrobial qualities of the oil help to reduce the possibility of infection and speed up cell regeneration. This ability to help the regeneration of skin cells also allows the oil to treat sunspots – a common symptom of aging. Lavender oil is quite potent by itself, but I highly recommend blending the oil with almond or frankincense oil as a means of strengthening the effects of the oil.

9.) Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary is something we’ve all come into contact with at some point whether in a friend or family members garden, or in the kitchen. It’s an amazing herb and has a very pungent aroma that really adds a delicious flavour to almost any poultry dish, beef roast or vegetable bake.

However, the properties of the rosemary herb are not limited to the kitchen alone. This amazing plant has the ability to improve blood circulation which will help to restore the color and natural sheen to your skin as well as allowing wounds and scars to heal faster.

The antiseptic properties of rosemary also make it very effective in removing the bacteria that occur on the surface of your skin on a daily basis which lead to irritation and further infection. This also makes the oil suitable for removing excess skin cells and sebaceous oil that gather on your skin and clog up your pores.

10.) Lemon Essential Oil

Last but certainly not least on our wonderful list of natural treatments, we have lemon oil. This powerful citrus fruit packs a real punch and comes with a delightful odor that we all know (and hopefully love). It has strong antibacterial and antiseptic properties which make it incredibly suitable for treating irritated and infected areas on your skin, as well as killing off or removing any bacteria that may linger on the surface of your skin and further any irritations.

The oil is also loaded with 1,8-cineole, limonene and linalool which make it a powerful antioxidant – effective in removing and reducing the signs of free-radical damage on the surface of your skin. It also acts as a natural toner and will help to promote skin cell and tissue regeneration. I highly recommend using this daily or as an effective makeup remover as well. It’s quite commonly available and is very affordable – due to the large scale cultivation of lemons around the world, making it a must have in any natural remedy seekers home.

Conclusion

Ultimately, I think most people are starting to wake-up to the fact that most cosmetic, skin care or pharmaceutical treatments are not always that good for you in the long run, and that there are a variety of shortcomings to the insta-fix, over-the-shelf methodology that we’ve become so used to in our rushed lifestyle.

Instead of putting all our faith in chemical products that often have lists of side-effects, why not take things back to basics and slow it all down a little. Instead of spending 5 minutes treating your skin with pharmaceutical or cosmetic products, spend 10 minutes using natural products. It might take a little more time, but the health benefits are well worth the wait and the results will definitely make your mind up for you if you’re still undecided.

The natural route for skin care is cheaper, healthier and more sustainable – no need to read long precautionary pamphlets or consult your doctor before trying it out. This is one of the few cases in life where you really do stand to lose very little, and could gain a whole lot. So what are you waiting for? Try one of these amazing oils as soon as possible, and see the results before you listen to that salesperson in the makeup aisle next time or fall for the next high budget skin care advert. Go back to basics.

The Best Aromatherapy Essential Oils

Aromatherapy essential oils have long been used to treat a variety of conditions from stress and insomnia to burns and infections. Here is a brief guide to aromatherapy essential oils (1, 2).

Ways to Use Aromatherapy Essential Oils:

There are a variety of ways to use aromatherapy essential oils depending on the type of oil and the reason that you are using it. Some suggestions include adding a few drops to your bath water, applying a couple of drops to the temples to relieve headaches; which works very well with lavender, using in an oil diffuser, or using as a topical application.

Top Five Aromatherapy Essential Oils:

Chamomile– Chamomile is one of the more common of the aromatherapy essential oils, particular when used in cosmetics such as moisturizers and lip balms. Do You Know Which Are The 3 Most Powerful Healing Essential Oils?

A few years ago I became interested in the healing power of essential oils and quickly found a few favorites. Those are; oregano oil, black seed oil, and magnesium oil.

Essential oils are more than delicious smelling oils. These wildly healthful plant extracts can help you heal, maintain good body energy balances and can even be used, with caution, for your pets.

Essential oils are very potent, and the utmost care and attention should be applied when using and handling these products.

Some oils can be made simply and at home, but others need the distillation process to fully extract all their potent properties. And yes, if you’re really keen, you can purchase a distillation kit for around $ 400. To make your own, you will need a LOT of the plant material to start with. Always make sure to start with the very highest quality plant material, to ensure the best oils coming out the other end of the process.

If you cannot make your own or don’t have access to the necessary plant material, there are plenty of retailers that are happy to sell you certified organic essential oils.

These highly potent oils are usually used for their healing properties. However, some just smell so good, that you will want to wear them as a perfume!

Modern science has finally caught up with the use of essential oils in some pharmaceuticals. For example, eucalyptus essential oil is used in preparations to help relieve sore throats and congestive coughs. Also, many essential oils are used in the ancient art of aromatherapy.

Oregano Oil

Is a powerful antibacterial, antiviral, anti-parasitic and anti-fungal oil that can help fight off infections. Personally, I love oregano oil for relieving tooth ache and keeping colds and flu at bay. As soon as I feel a little tickle in the throat, I start taking 3 x 3 drops per day. Caution: when first using this oil, make sure you start with only 1 x 3 drops per day. It’s really strong stuff!

Carvacrol is the main ingredient in oregano oil that makes it so powerful against many ailments. This substance is being evaluated in many scientific studies, and there are great results coming through. Carvacrol has been proven to kill cancer cells, supports a balanced blood sugar level and is effective in the fight against candida (see the end of the article for the link to the very long list of studies)

Black Seed Oil

This particular oil has been described as ‘the remedy for all ailments except death’ Now, while I can’t attest to the death part, I can tell you that this is another powerful oil, useful in relieving toothache. However, this oil has a side benefit that I didn’t count on. After taking this internally for just a few days, I noticed my facial wrinkles smoothing out. Wow, an excellent anti-aging effect!

Recent studies have shown that black seed oil (from the Nigella sativa plant) can combat super bugs that are fast becoming resistant to man-made antibiotics. Take that big pharma!

The fantastic anti-cancer properties of black seed oil are attributed to the active ingredient called thymoquinone. There has been a lot of interest from the scientific community in thymoquinone, for it’s potential as a cancer treatment. “Recent preclinical and clinical studies provide evidence that adoptive transfer of in vitro activated T cells can results in significant antitumor responses in vivo upon acquisition of certain survival and homing properties during in vitro activation.”

“Significant apoptosis” has been observed in vitro.

Apoptosis is a process of programmed cell death that occurs in multi cellular organisms. Biochemical events lead to characteristic cell changes (morphology) and death. In vitro means a process performed or taking place in a test tube, culture dish, or elsewhere outside a living organism.

In 2008 there was a study of 2.5ml x 2 daily of black seed oil, tested against atorvastatin 10 mg once a day and metformin 500 mg twice a day. The result? “The treatment group showed significant improvement concerning total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and fasting blood glucose.”

Magnesium Oil

This is called an oil, but it’s not. I’m not sure why the moniker of oil is attached to it because it’s quite a watery substance. Magnesium oil is mainly used topically with massage to relieve cramps. When we dehydrate, we not only lose water but also salts. Magnesium oil replaces some of these body salts, thus avoiding cramps in the first place.

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals, and it’s been mostly removed from our food supply. Since the 1950’s, up to 95% of magnesium is now not present in vegetables, grains, and pasta. No wonder we are all getting sick! I consider magnesium oil to be a ‘get it in ya NOW’ type supplement.

I love to use it before bed, rubbed into my legs, for a good nights sleep. This wonder oil is great to alleviate the suffering of migraines, restless leg syndrome, baths for eczema and psoriasis, to calm stress and hyperactivity, help with the pain of your lunar cycle, improve skin quality and even help with diabetic symptoms.

How To Choose The Highest Quality Essential Oils

When choosing a supplier for your essential oils, please ensure you find certified organic oils. Organic certification is different in each country. However, there are international standards too. It’s a minefield of information, but, if you just stick to certified organic labels, then you will be getting the highest quality available.

Organic certified essential oils are always more expensive. However, this shows the true cost of growing high quality, chemical free products. It’s all the costs of complying to certification that raise the prices so high. My hot tip is to learn how to grow and make your own oils!

Organic farming is also often performed on a much smaller scale, utilizing farm management practices which do not harm the environment, wildlife or you. That’s why I don’t care what the price is; the quality is what counts.

Essential oils are called ‘essential’ for a reason. Get some in your natural health cabinet today!

Physicians: Essential Oils Can Help in Treating Depression

Over the last decade, essential oils have taken the UK — and much of the world — by storm as all-purpose household cleaners and deodorisers, relaxation aides and face washes. New data from physicians shows that many essential oils are also helpful in treating depression.

A new article published in Yahoo News notes that some physicians claim mild, situational forms of depression can be treated using essential oils.

While noting that essentials oils “are not a cure-all”, naturopathic physician Mark Sherwood of the Functional Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, notes that essential oils such as those found in lavender and chamomile “can help” in easing depression and improving general mood.

Sherwood’s observation is one of many linking essential oils — natural oils derived from extracts of lavender, ylang ylang and other plants — is one of many, with numerous doctors linking oils to improved mental and physical health throughout the last century.

The improvement in mood and treatment of depression can occur through the body’s olfactory system — better known as the sense of smell. Physicians believe inhaling some oils can trigger stimulation in certain parts of the brain.

These include the parts of the brain that trigger specific emotions, leading many to believe that oils can result in sense-driven feelings of happiness and satisfaction. Certain essential oils are also linked to stimulation of the parts of the brain that store memories.

This data isn’t strictly anecdotal; several studies have linked the use of essential oils to mood improvement, particularly in new mothers.

One study, from the Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research, noted that women who used lavender oil in the weeks after childbirth were less stressful, less anxious and less likely to feel depressed than their peers.

Another, from the Biomed Research International journal found that in people suffering from long term, chronic pain, the use of aromatherapy oils resulted in a measuring improvement in anxiety and stress levels, with a significant reduction in depression.

Results appear to be fast, with the Biomed Research International study indicating a significant improvement after four weeks of aromatherapy treatment.

The cognitive benefits of essential oils, in particular the neuroprotective properties of lavender, are also of interest to physicians.

Many of the benefits of lavender oil observed in humans are replicable in non-human testing. A 2013 study of rats shows that long-term exposure to lavender oil led to a reduction in anxiety — a signal that the benefits of many essential oils are far from a placebo effect.

While the benefits of essential oils may be useful in treating depression, doctors advise that they shouldn’t be used to replace clinical and pharmaceutical treatments. Sherwood notes that using essential oils alone to treat depression is “kind of ridiculous.”

Dr Brent Bauer, of the Mayo Clinic, recommends that people suffering from depression view oils as a supplement to treatment, not a treatment on their own:

“Once you have a good foundation from a conventional standpoint, you can jointly explore where other complementary therapies — such as aromatherapy, exercise, meditation, yoga [and other approaches] might be right for you.”

Injecting natural oils for muscle gain could be deadly, doctors warn

Bodybuilders seeking to enhance their physique by injecting natural oils risk lasting damage and even death, doctors have warned.

They fear that a case in west London in which a 25-year-old man suffered scarring and restricted function after injecting coconut oil may be the “tip of the iceberg”.

Instances have been recorded in recent years of bodybuilders using other oils, including sesame oil, walnut oil and paraffin, which are less costly than other synthetic compounds, in the hope of boosting muscle size and definition.

There has been little medical literature on the subject to date, but a paper published in BMJ Case Reports on Thursday says the practice is well documented among Arab and Middle Eastern communities and online.

The 25-year-old man was referred to Ealing hospital because of pain and loss of function in his right arm, into which he had injected the coconut oil over several months.

An ultrasound scan showed a rupture in his triceps – a rare condition in young patients – and multiple cysts within the arm muscles. Surgery to repair the rupture was successful but he was left with scarring and limited elbow flexion.

Dr Ajay Sahu, of London North West Healthcare NHS trust, who co-authored the report, said: “He has lost significant function in his tricep and he’s right-handed. If he had injected the coconut oil into one of his veins by mistake it could have been fatal. It could cause an embolism in the heart, the lungs or the brain. You need to think about the implications.”

Sahu said the case was difficult to diagnose because the patient did not initially admit what he had done, and Sahu was not aware at the time that injecting natural oils was something people did to try to build muscle.

He suggested resort to such drastic measures was symptomatic of increasing concern among young men about how they look.

“People do all sorts of things [to gain muscle] and these things are very unreported,” he said. “These people will never come to the doctor and say all the things they do. This is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Debunking Myths Surrounding Olive Oils

I was recently introduced to the myths surrounding olive oils and a website that has people turning their heads away from cooking with this healthy oil.(1)  So, for me it was important to debunk the misinformation that surround these important questions. Does olive oil turn into trans-fats?  Are you afraid to cook with olive oil?  Is it a good or bad vegetable oil?  If the label on my olive oil says it’s from Italy, why isn’t it?  OR… How can I be sure my olive oil is real?

First you may want to know olives are fruits and not vegetables. “Phrases like “packed in Italy” or “bottled in Italy,” do not mean that the oil was made in Italy. Generally speaking, avoid oils whose precise point of production – a specific mill – is not specified on the label.” (1a)  According to Health Impact News, they claim olive oils are one of the safest oils to eat. Well, this was a pretty good start. Olive oil came in as both healthy and safe. (2)

What about myths surrounding how heating olive oil destroys it’s nutritional qualities? According to a scientific study from Spain, Estación de Olivicultura y Elaiotecnia, “they’ve concluded that despite the heating conditions, VOO maintained most of its minor compounds and, therefore, most of its nutritional properties. (3)

Next, a recent study by Silva et al., shows that olive oils are more stable against heat. The four products with lowest alkenal content after heating were all olive oils.(4) Great, but I wanted a few more references to make it clear.

The journal of Food Science talks about the chemistry in frying oils(5) which of course, as a Health Coach, I wouldn’t recommend. But, if you fry at home and you want to know which oil is best to use, it’s extra virgin olive oil. This is because they have the highest levels of antioxidants, and therefore the most heat resistant to high-heat cooking or frying.(6)  And just in case you are concerned with the smoke point when frying oils, extra virgin olive oils are safe.(7)

Can Olive Oil Turn Into Trans-fats?

Well what I found was, turning oils into trans-fats takes several hours, according to the Olive Oil Source. This type of transformation will not occur under normal home cooking conditions.(9)  Olive oil turns to trans-fat only when repeatedly reused and heated to very high temperatures.(9) This means you save your oil, cool it and use it again (more than once) at very high temperatures. Yuck! This can’t be someone I know.

Are Olive Oils Mislabeled?

Unfortunately, many olive oils available on the market are adulterated and mislabeled extra virgin olive oils. I have found this to be true in Trader Joes. What was my first clue? The label on the bottle read: Extra Vergin Olive Oil from Italy!

Additionally, avoid olive-pomace oil because of the chemicals and/or refining process,(10) as well as pure olive oil and light olive oil. These I’ve seen in big box stores.

Is Olive Oil a Healthy Emollient to Use on Our Skin?

With all the attention coconut oil is getting for a facial moisturizer allow me to give extra virgin olive oil equal praise. Extra virgin olive oil helps with acute dermatitis, (11) and has antioxidant properties.(12)  So, I give it two thumbs up! According to the Department of Dermatology, “olive oil topically applied after UVB exposure can effectively reduce UVB-induced murine skin tumors…reducing DNA damage by reactive oxygen species.”(8) ROS is the free radical theory of aging. This mean olive oil fights premature aging. Carol Firenze, in her book, The Passionate Olive, suggests making a moisturizer made of Italian parsley, water, and extra virgin olive oil. Yummy on your face and salad!

Now, how do we take the confusion out of  buying Real Olive Oil?

We’re told to look for extra virgin on the label to get the best nutrients and flavor. What stores are the best? I’ve visited olive oil specialty shops and found most tastings fun, flavorful and their staff extremely helpful. Avoid plastic and purchase extra virgin olive oil in dark glass bottles. Organic is best.(13)

And oh, by the way, leave the canola, soy, corn, and pure vegetable oils on your grocery store shelf.  Why?  These are refined, industrial, processed foods and can release toxic chemicals linked to cancer.

Safely Diluting Essential Oils – Children, Pregnancy & Elderly

As a Certified Aromatherapist I am passionate about helping people use essential oils safely. Most essential oils can be applied to the skin safely as long as they are properly diluted with a carrier oil. Of course, some essential oils carry their own guidelines in order to ensure safe topical application, please be sure to research every essential oil prior to use to ensure you are blending within the guidelines of that particular essential oil.

In my previous blog post I covered some basics when it comes to proper essential oil dilution. In this post, I want to go a little more in depth so you can rest assured you are using essential oils safely.

An essential oil is a volatile plant compound. Being volatile means that essential oils evaporate quickly. Their note (Top, middle or base) determines just how fast they evaporate. Generally speaking we can say that:

Citrus peels are top notes and will evaporate the fastest. Some examples: Lemon (Citrus limon) & Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)

Flowers, Leaves and Stems are middle notes and will evaporate the second fastest. Some examples: Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) & Geranium (Pelargonium roseum X asperum)

*An exception would be Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) which is distilled from flowers but is considered more of a base note than a middle note*

Roots are base notes and will evaporate the third fastest. Some examples: Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi or Nardostachys grandiflora) & Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)

You can see from the examples above how notes play a part in aromatherapy. By looking at the note of an essential oil you can determine how quickly it will evaporate in a blend. Diluting essential oils in a carrier is a must in order to allow the essential oil to “hang out” longer than it would if you were to apply the essential oil neat. By diluting the essential oil properly in a carrier, you end up using less essential oil and the outcome will be just as effective. Most essential oils can be applied to the skin safely as long as they are properly diluted.

*Neat use of an essential oil refers to using the essential oil straight from the bottle and applying it to the skin.

Essential oils are extremely concentrated. If you are making a blend for daily use and are a typical healthy adult, a 2% dilution (10-12 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier) or less would be recommended. If you are blending for a child, the elderly or someone that is pregnant, there are extra considerations that need to be taken into effect.

Pregnancy

  • During pregnancy, the first trimester is considered the most crucial in terms of fetal development.

  • Essential oil use during the first trimester should only be used on occasion such as inhaling for morning sickness.

  • During the second and third trimesters, essential oil use should be limited to an as needed basis at a 1% dilution (5-6 drops of essential oils per ounce of carrier).

  • Neat use, oral, rectal and vaginal use is not appropriate during pregnancy.

  • All solvent extracted (absolutes) essential oils, poor quality oils and perfumes should be avoided while pregnant.

  • There are roughly 50 or so essential oils that should be avoided all together during pregnancy, please be sure to consult a Certified Aromatherapist, Midwife or other qualified practitioner prior to using essential oils while pregnant. While there isn’t an authoritative list per se of which essential oils are safe or unsafe its best to choose essential oils with a history of low toxicity.

Elderly

  • Caution should be noted when making a blend for the elderly population, their skin tends to be thinner than that of a typical healthy adult.

  • Elderly tend to have a lower irritation threshold when it comes to essential oil use than that of a typical healthy adult.

  • Recommended dilution for the elderly population is 1% or less (a 1% dilution is 5-6 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier).

  • Essential oils should always be properly diluted when working with the elderly population. Neat use is not recommended unless under the supervision of a Certified Aromatherapist or other qualified health practitioner.

Children

Let me start this category by saying, as a Certified Aromatherapist I take an extremely conservative approach when it comes to essential oil use and children. Children are much more delicate than a typical healthy adult. I have found in my practice that herbally infused oils and/or hydrosols can give their little bodies the nudge it needs to get back on track without ever having to use essential oils. Children and essential oils have caused much debate on a number of Facebook groups I am a part of. I have seen a lot of individuals recommend dilutions for children that would be appropriate for a typical adult, however children come with their own set of dilution guidelines.

To put it into a better perspective, I like to use this analogy with my clients; If an adult dose of Tylenol cures your headache, you wouldn’t in turn give that same adult does to your 2 year old when they are complaining of a headache, now would you? There are specially formulated variations of Tylenol for children and babies based on their delicate systems. Essential oil formulations are no different.

General Guidelines for Children

  • Age < 2 years – Consult a Certified Aromatherapist

  • Age 2 – 4 years – Only use essential oils on an as needed basis for this age group at a dilution of .05% or less. Keep in mind certain essential oils carry safety considerations for children that should be taken into account

  • Age 5 – 12 years – Essential oils may be used at a 1% dilution (5-6 drops per ounce of carrier). Keep in mind certain essential oils carry safety considerations for children that should be taken into account

  • Very low ambient intermittent* inhalation is generally safe for babies ages 3 months and up and children that are too young for topical application. When diffusing around babies and children essential oils should limited to just a few drops per 24 hours. Be sure to choose extremely gentle age appropriate essential oils and keep diffuser use to 30 minutes at a time. Diffuser use with babies and small children should be limited and used on an as needed basis. When in doubt be sure to consult a Certified Aromatherapist.

*Intermittent use refers to 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off

I can not stress enough how important it is to use caution when utilizing essential oils with children. Essential oils are extremely concentrated substances. Often times children are too young to effectively communicate if they are having an adverse reaction to an essential oil blend. Please be sure to consult a Certified Aromatherapist or other knowledgeable practitioner when making a blend for a child and always be sure to research the particular essential oil you are choosing to use to be sure there aren’t any safety precautions that need to be considered.

As you can see there are so many factors that come into play when formulating an essential oil blend. I hope this post sheds some light on additional safety factors that should be taken into consideration when creating the perfect essential oil blend for a friend or loved one.

7 Aromatherapy Oils for Anxiety

Aromatherapy for stress relief is generally considered a form of alternative medicine.  But did you know there is actually an abundance of scientific research backing up the use of essential oils to treat anxiety and induce relaxation?  Here are 7 healthy oils which smell amazing and which can help to soothe your worries.

How To Treat Anxiety With Essential Oils

1.  Cedarwood Oil

Cedarwood oil has a lovely woodsy scent most of us are familiar with.  At one point or another, you probably have walked into a room with cedar walls or cedar furniture, took a deep breath, and asked, “ What is that incredible smell?”

It turns out that cedarwood oil has a relaxing effect on the mind which is backed by scientific research—and which goes far beyond pleasing associations.  So if you love the smell of cedar furniture, you don’t need to go out and buy a new chest of drawers; just pick up some cedarwood oil, breathe deep, and relax.

2.  Vetiver Oil

Vetiver is a unique scent which is easy to distinguish once you have become familiar with it.  It is grassy, heavy, and slightly bitter.  Many people have a masculine association with it, probably because it tends to be a popular ingredient in men’s colognes.  If you ever have gotten a soothing vibe from a cologne containing vetiver, it wasn’t a coincidence; vetiver really does help to reduce anxiety.

3.  Lavender Oil

Lavender is probably the most well-known oil to soothe anxiety and relieve stress.  It has a light sedative effect and a mild, herbaceous, mellow floral scent.  It is clinically proven to reduce stress markers.  You can also try a related oil called lavandin, which has successfully been used in pre-op to reduce patient anxiety.

4.  Rosemary Oil

Rosemary is considered a somewhat invigorating scent, so it may surprise you that it has a mellowing effect on the human psyche.  But it can actually reduce stress and improve performance when you need your mind to be sharp but relaxed.

5.  Ylang Ylang

Oil Ylang ylang is a heady floral scent reminiscent of jasmine blossom.  It is best known for its aphrodisiac effects, so you may not expect it to have relaxing qualities as well.  But the research is there; ylang-ylang may relieve both stress and depression.

6.  Orange Oil

Oranges have a wonderful juicy, refreshing scent, and that aroma actually can make a huge difference when it comes to dealing with your stress!  Studies show orange oil can reduce anxiety and have an uplifting effect on mood.

7.  Geranium Oil

Geranium oil has a scent which is similar to rose, but with less of a powdery impression and more of a hint of citrus.  This beautiful scent is so effective at soothing anxiety it has helped women through the first stage of labor.

As you can see, aromatherapy really works for treating anxiety!  Just remember when using these oils topically that you should always dilute them in a carrier oil first to stay safe.  You can also use them in an oil diffuser or perfume blend!

New Study Provides First Evidence That Natural Essential Oils Counteract Inflammation Caused By Polluted Air

Certain ingredients in essential oils made from plants could provide a natural treatment of liver and lung conditions caused by air pollution.  They may also help in counteracting inflammation.

This recent study evaluated the value of using specific essential oil compounds — like fennel, anise, ylang ylang, and cloves — to treat inflammation caused by the fine particles found in hazy, polluted air known to be carcinogenic.

This new study is the first of its kind.

Different Organic Compounds in Essential Oils

Plants naturally contain a variety of essential oils that consist of different compounds. Some of these compounds have antioxidant value.  They may also be able to fight inflammation.

The essential oils in some plants have a group of organic compounds called phenylpropanoids — possible anti-inflammatory substances.  A few of these substances are estragole (found in basil), eugenol (which occurs in clove bud oil), trans-anethole, (a flavor component of anise and fennel), and isoeugenol (contained in ylang ylang).

Laboratory Tests Discover Essential Oil

Lead author of this new study, Miriana Kfoury and her team of researchers, collected air pollutant samples containing fine particles.  Laboratory test samples were then introduced to human cell cultures of cancer derived hepatic cells and normal bronchial epithelial cells.

The fine particle matter induced inflammation in the cells.  They started to secrete the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8 — substances that are secreted during infections and tissue damage. Cytokin levels normally increase when our body’s immune system fights specific infections.

Next, the researchers established that the trans-anethole, estragole, eugenol, and isoeugenol all have cytotoxicity — which means that they might cause cell death when exposed to comparatively high concentrations.

Evaluation of Oil Compound Properties

In their evaluation, the researchers were able to determine the level of cytotoxicity of these oil compounds. This was important in order to establish the maximum dose that should be selected in the next step — specifically, the assessment for anti-inflammatory properties.

In the second round of laboratory testing, the researchers introduced the four compounds to the combination of cell lines and air pollutants to see whether the natural essential oil compounds could protect lung and liver cells damaged by fine particles found in air pollution.

The researchers discovered that the essential oil compounds tested decrease the levels of the two types of cytokines in the samples. The levels of cytokine IL-6 decreased up to 96 percent, and the levels of cytokine IL-8 by 87 percent.

First Evidence of Essential Oils Counteracting Inflammation

Lead author Miriana Kfoury, of the Unité de Chimie Environnementale et Interactions sur le Vivant, Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale in France and the Lebanese University in Lebanon, offers a brief comment about this new study’s findings.

“The findings provide the first evidence that natural essential oil components counteract the inflammatory effects of particulate matter, such as that contained in polluted air.”

Kfoury and her colleagues published their recent study titled, “Essential oil components decrease pulmonary and hepatic cells inflammation induced by air pollution particulate matter,” in Springer’s journal Environmental Chemistry Letters

Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils – Are they all they’re cracked up to be?

Let’s Explore “Therapeutic Grade” Essential Oils

By now you’ve probably heard about essential oils. Aromatherapy is exploding. It seems every company is trying to get on the band wagon and make money off of people trying to live a cleaner lifestyle. In fact, you can even find “Essential Oils” at some major retailers. Seems convenient, right? It may not be as convenient as you think. How do you know what you’re purchasing is really a “Therapeutic Grade” essential oil?

Today I want to set the record straight about the term “Therapeutic Grade” and share with you how to find high quality essential oils.

BUT FIRST…

Let’s examine what an essential oil is. An essential oil is a volatile plant compound attained through methods of steam distillation, pressing, solvent extraction and CO2 extraction. Essential oils come from various parts of the plant such as, seeds, roots, wood, flowers, rinds, and resins, just to name a few. Essential oils are the “Breath of Life” or essence of the plant they are distilled from. Pretty cool, huh?

So how do I know which essential oils are “Therapeutic Grade”?

First let’s look at the definition of therapeutic…

According to Vocabulary.com therapeutic can be defined as:

“Whether you’re talking about a therapeutic drug or a therapeutic exercise plan, something that is therapeutic helps to heal or to restore health.

1 – adjective, tending to cure or restore to health “a therapeutic agent”, “therapeutic diets”

adjective, relating to or involved in therapy

noun, a medicine or therapy that cures disease or relieve pain”

When it comes to essential oils, the term therapeutic grade can be extremely misleading. “Therapeutic grade” is a clever marketing term and has no validity with regards to the purity of the oil the you are purchasing. At this time there is no universally recognized grading system for essential oils to show their purity. There is also no governing board that oversees the manufacturing and processing of essential oils. It is up to the company that is selling the essential oils to have testing done to verify the essential oils are unadulterated and pure.

Wait a minute?? What?? Well, how do I know if the oils I have been purchasing are the real deal??

I’m glad you asked!!  Let’s look at the definition of therapeutic again, “tending to cure or restore health or relating to or involved in therapy”. Due to their unique chemical make-up and scientifically shown health benefits, it can be safe to say, as long as the essential oil is pure and unadulterated it can be deemed “therapeutic grade”.

NO MATTER WHICH COMPANY YOU CHOOSE TO PURCHASE YOUR OIL FROM.

ANY COMPANY you purchase essential oils from can have “therapeutic grade” essential oils as long as the oil is pure and unadulterated.

So how do I tell if an essential oil is pure and unadulterated?

One of the ways to ensure an essential oils purity is through Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry testing (GC/MS). GC/MS testing is used in Aromatherapy to determine the precise chemical constituents of an essential oil. GC/MS testing will also show if the oil is pure and unadulterated. GC/MS testing will also identify key constituents in an essential oil which is important to know especially when blending from a therapeutic perspective.

The key constituents of an essential oil can vary based on the country it was grown in, season it was grown in and the weather conditions of the season it was grown in.

For instance, the chemical makeup of a plant could change if it was grown during a drought when typically it is used to seeing a lot of rain.

Example Time!

Let’s look at Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil. Through the GC/MS testing you will find that Lemon (Citrus limon) is a Monoterpene rich oil high in d-limonene (66%).

The constituent d-limonene is known for helping to activate white blood cells and can be immune supportive. Therapeutically to increase the characteristics of d-limonene in Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil, you would want to create a synergistic blend by utilizing other oils high in d-limonene. Other oils that share a high percentage of this constituent are:

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) which contains 51% d-limonene

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) which contains 94% d-limonene

Orange (Sweet) (Citrus sinensis) which contains 97% d-limonene

*Note – the figures above were taken from GC/MS reports I currently have for the above oils. These figures can vary depending on your supplier, where the oil was grown, etc.*

Notice a trend from the oils above? You guessed it! They are citrus oils. In the Aromatherapy world, citrus essential oils (thanks to d-limonene) are renowned for their antimicrobial properties.

Now what? How do I choose the best essential oil company?

By now you’re probably wondering how you can guarantee you are getting the purest unadulterated oil.

Here are some questions you can ask the company you’re thinking about purchasing from:

  1. Do they do GC/MS testing for every batch of oil they receive? (Testing every batch is important, since the chemical makeups can vary from batch to batch.)

  2. Can they provide you with the GC/MS testing? (This can be a red flag if they state they do GC/MS testing, but refuse to provide you with the reports. If they are testing every batch of oil that is received, providing the reports shouldn’t be a problem.)

  3. Is there a Certified Aromatherapist on staff? (Having a Certified Aromatherapist on staff ensures that the oils are being stored properly. A Certified Aromatherapist will also know the shelf life of each oil and can help with quality control, not to mention will be able to analyze the GC/MS for an oils purity.)

  4. How are the plants grown? (Are they wild crafted, organic, certified organic or unsprayed? Are they grown conventionally with the use of pesticides?)

  5. How are the oils distilled? (Steam distillation, pressing, solvent extraction or CO2 extraction?)

What to look for when viewing a website

  1. When looking at the company’s website, do they list the common name as well as the Latin name? (This is important. If we look at Cedarwood for instance, there are a couple different types of Cedarwood. If they only list Cedarwood on their website, how do you know if it’s; Juniperus virginiana, Cedrus deodara or Cedrus atlantica? While they are all Cedarwood, their chemical makeups vary.)

  2. Does the company list the country of origin for their essential oils?

  3. Do they list the plant part distilled, as well as, the method of distillation?

  4. They should also list proper use of the essential oil, as well as, any safety considerations.

In a nutshell…

Based on the definition of therapeutic, any essential oil can be deemed “therapeutic grade” as long as it is pure and unadulterated. Essential oils are powerfully concentrated plant essences that should be handled with great care and respect.

I hope this blog post empowers you to start asking questions about the oils you are planning on or have already purchased. Don’t be afraid to research and ask questions.

4 Ways Aromatherapy and Essential Oils Can Improve Your Health

Many of us are often hesitant to give new-age methods of health and wellness a try, preferring, instead, to stick to more conventional means. But there’s no reason why a person can’t use both conventional and alternative wellness methods at the same time. Aromatherapy and essential oils are a perfect example of this, as they can be used as a precursor or a complement to more traditional types of medicine. There are hundreds of ways to utilize essential oils, and so there is no shortage of ways in which they can be used to improve your health.

Depression

Helping to ease depression is one of the most important ways that essential oils can be used to complement traditional medicine. Inhaling oils via aromatherapy can have a similar effect to the type of medication a psychiatrist may prescribe for someone with depression. Aromatherapy simply works on a smaller scale, as the essential oils can help boost serotonin levels. Obviously, essential oils should not take the place of counseling or any talk therapy, nor should they be looked at as a quick fix for depression. But considering the addictive and potentially harmful nature of anti-depressants, essential oils are a safer alternative.

Anxiety

Along the same lines of helping with depression, essential oils may also be used to help reduce levels of stress and anxiety. There are several oils that are known to help soothe your mind and improve your mood, which is why many people practice aromatherapy at home in their free time. These essential oils can provide a mild and temporary solution to stress and anxiety. Again, it should not be considered a replacement to traditional medicine for someone with chronic anxiety. But for someone who can stand to take a break and relax every now and then, aromatherapy with essential oils can be quite useful.

Headaches

Treating headaches is another potential health benefit of essential oils. Several essential oils have shown the ability to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches, including migraines. Inhaling oils via aromatherapy may be able to stop your current headache without having to take any medication. Also, using aromatherapy to prevent stress and anxiety, as discussed above, can help prevent future headaches. Obviously, if you suffer from frequent or serious headaches, you should seek out a medical professional, but for the occasional headache, essential oils can make for a good first line of defense.

Sleep

Finally, essential oils may be used as a sleep aid. Not getting enough sleep can lead to a variety of health issues. However, aromatherapy may help to rectify this issue, as some essential oils can actually get your Circadian rhythms in order so you can get yourself on a proper sleep schedule. If essential oils can help you develop good sleeping habits, you will be less likely to develop serious or chronic medical conditions that can plague you for years to come.

It’s important to recognize that aromatherapy and essential oils should not be relied upon to solve a serious medical issue. However, they can prove useful for acute conditions or be used as complementary treatment with a doctor’s permission. When in doubt, always consult a medical professional before using essential oils to treat yourself.

Examine finds important oils might improve cognitive functioning in Alzheimer’s sufferers!

Alzheimer’s Disease is the only cause of death in the top ten that cannot be prevented or cured.  For many families, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease is more devastating than any other diagnosis.(1)

Many people are searching for holistic options that may help improve symptoms or slow progression of the disease.  Essential oils have been used for generations to manage symptoms of depression, anxiety and even insomnia.  Caregivers are finding comfort in using oils to treat similar symptoms in relationship to Alzheimer’s Disease.(2)

Essential oils provide sensory stimulation that helps decrease agitation, improves sleep and overall quality of life associated with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia!

Oils can be applied to the skin, inhaled or even placed in food or beverages if the oils are safe for human consumption.  In addition to the benefits associated with the oils themselves, studies also show that sensory stimulation helps decrease agitation, improves sleep and improves the overall quality of life associated with the disease.(2)

One study found that used rosemary, lemon, lavender and orange essential oils for 28 days on patients with Alzheimer’s Disease.  All patients showed significant improvement in cognitive function following aromatherapy.  Researchers used the Gottfries, Brane, Steen scale, Functional Assessment Staging of Alzheimer’s disease, and the Touch Panel-type Dementia Assessment Scale to assess progress following aromatherapy.(3)
