Fighting Acute Disease

So, when acute disease enters the body, what does it do?

FEVER increases the body’s metabolic rate and circulation of blood and lymph, thereby speeding the removal of toxins from the body and sending nutrition to the diseased areas. The increased circulation also acts as a carrier for the body’s more complicated defenses like the white blood cells and the antibodies. Fever also creates a less favorable environment for bacteria or viruses, which generally have a very narrow temperature range for optimal growth. As fever increases, these organisms begin to die faster than they can produce.

SWEATING carries toxins out of the system through the skin. It also helps keep the rising temperature within a range that will not endanger the long-term health of the body.

MUCOUS SECRETIONS also remove toxic material from the body. Cells of some mucous membranes protect against invasion by the action of the tiny cilia that move particles of foreign matter and debris toward the nearest exit. These cilia are stimulated by external irritants, bacteria, viruses, or internal toxins.

INFLAMMATION, SWELLING AND EDEMA are actions by the body to localize a problem. Inflammation indicates a local increase in metabolic activity with increased blood and lymph supply, and an increased capillary supply to help in the transport of blood-born defenses. Edema, or fluid accumulation, aids in diluting and undesirable, toxic, or irritating substance.

LOCAL INFECTION results from breakdown of vital tissues into waste matter, which provides a suitable environment for bacterial spread until the body’s forces can remove the waste material. The reduced vitality occurs first, the infection is secondary. Boils, acne and other local infections can also be the result of an inner cleansing process.

DIARRHEA AND VOMITING are obvious attempts by the body to rid itself of toxic substances. Local irritants can initiate this action as well as toxins in the system.

PAIN is a natural mechanism by which the body draws attention to a problem area. Pain indicates that the problem can no longer be tolerated and that ignoring it further could have serious ramifications.

SNEEZING AND COUGHING are major attempts by the body to rid the respiratory system of irritants and toxins. The coughing up of mucus can reduce the spread of infection by preventing dead material for stagnating, and can also help prevent blockage of smaller respiratory passageways. Sneezing effectively rids the upper respiratory passages of particles and irritants.

So, all these acute symptoms of disease are in fact the result of an intelligent action by the body to reestablish equilibrium and positive health. As such they are corrective and eliminative and should not be suppressed.

What is commonly called acute disease is really the result of nature’s efforts to eliminate waste matter or poisons from the body and to repair injured tissues. If some acute condition is not allowed to run its natural course, or is treated with suppressive methods and therefore not allowed to fulfill its intended function of elimination, then eventually chronic disease will result.

And trust me, you don’t want that. The chronic disease condition is much more permanent and involves radical changes in the body’s structures and chemistry.

Aloha!

Fighting the Vaccine Bullies

“CDC cannot withstand a public debate. The CDC’s position is so fragile, it’s an edifice of fraud-fraud stacked upon fraud. It’s so high and so wobbly that even a slight breeze of public scrutiny will topple it.”1

–Robert Kennedy Junior

Robert Kennedy Junior, the eldest son of former Senator Robert Kennedy, didn’t plan on taking center-stage in the vaccine debate. He was simply doing a favor for a friend who asked him to look into the connection between Autism and mercury in vaccines. However, after intensely studying the scientific literature and speaking with government officials, as well as scientists on both sides of the issue, he realized what he had to do:

“I had a choice of either putting my head down and walking away from it and pretending I didn’t see it or getting involved and taking all the risks of doing that. The forces that [we’re] up against are the forces that have been able to compromise every major institution in our democracy. And, the people who stand up against them get crushed…I’m not going to stand down. I’m going to fight for you and I’m going to fight for your children.”2

What got Kennedy so fired up that he put his life on hold

to fight for us and our children?

Corruption.

In the documentary Vaccines Revealed, Robert Kennedy Junior provided insight into the corruption that exists in the vaccine industry. According to Kennedy, “CDC is really part of the vaccine industry” because, “CDC buys and sells over $ 4 billion worth of vaccines annually.” In addition, the FDA and CDC own vaccine patents.1

That means our government has an invested interest in our children receiving vaccines: If demand decreases then the government, particularly the CDC, loses money. Thus, government is incentivized to create demand for vaccines.

Demand has been successfully created through multiple avenues, including: control of the media, control of the vaccine schedule, implementing mandatory vaccinations, acquiring advocates, and providing an easy path to bring vaccines on the market. For instance, vaccines do not typically undergo double-blind placebo-controlled testing, which is the gold standard in science. Instead, according to Kennedy, “some of these products are brought to market with almost no testing whatsoever.”1 Without adequate safety testing, our children are the test subjects; our children are the guinea pigs in a nationwide chemical experiment.

That’s scary because the number of vaccines given to our children is on the rise: approximately 5 doses of vaccines were given in 1962, but today there are roughly 72 doses given before the age of 18 (55 doses before the age of 6).3,4   While the exact number is debated, it’s clear there has been a dramatic increased in the doses of vaccines given to our children in recent decades.

Why the dramatic increase in vaccine doses?

According to Kennedy, the increase is due to several factors, including:

  1. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices creates the vaccine schedule.5 That Committee consists mainly of people with direct financial ties to the vaccine industry.1 For example, Paul Offit is the research chair at Children’s Hospital. Merck, the largest vaccine producer in America, funds his position. Offit served on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices while he was working on a patent, with Merck, for a rotavirus vaccine. Instead of recusing himself, he voted to add the rotavirus vaccine to the vaccine schedule. Consequently, rotavirus vaccine is on the schedule and Offit’s patent was later sold for $ 182 million.4  Most of the people who sit on the Advisory Committee for the vaccine schedule appear to have similar financial conflicts: 67% reportedly had clear conflicts while 97% either had conflicts or did not fill out the paperwork to legally disclose whether or not they had conflicts, according to Kennedy.1 The bottom line is: People are making personal gains on vaccines.

  1. The vaccine schedule changed after Congress passed The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986. That Act exempted the vaccine industry from any type of liability regardless of how reckless their behavior or how seriously a child was injured from a vaccine. That means there are no consequences for vaccine companies, even if their vaccines hurt people. And, there is no discovery, which means the company’s documents cannot be examined nor can the decision making process behind their vaccines be scrutinized. Vaccine companies are given “blanket immunity” from the law, according to Kennedy.1

Is the current vaccine schedule hurting children?

That’s a complicated and controversial question. I recommend doing your own homework and deciding for yourself if vaccines are right for your family. A good place to start is by reading the Simpsonwood transcripts from a meeting that took place on June 7-8, 2000. The transcript was obtained through a freedom of information request.

Link to the full transcript: http://thinktwice.com/simpsonwood.pdf

The major players at that meeting included: employees of the CDC and FDA, members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, state department employees, and members of the National Immunization Program.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the findings of a study that was conducted by a CDC epidemiologist. He analyzed data from the CDC’s Vaccine Safety Database and found an association between increasing levels of methylmercury in vaccines and certain neurological issues in children.

Here are a few tidbits from the transcript:5

“There are just a host of neurodevelopmental data that would suggest that we’ve got a serious problem.”

“Thimerosal is in many vaccines…it is cleaved into ethylmercury…there is very limited data on its blood levels. There is no data on its excretions. It is recognized to both cross placenta and the blood-brain barrier. The data on its toxicity…is sparse. It is primarily recognized as a cause of hypersensitivity. Acutely it can cause neurologic and renal toxicity…”

“There was recognition that the cumulative exposure [to mercury] that children receive from vaccination may actually exceed at least one of the guidelines that is recommended, that of the EPA.”

“…in relation to aluminum [in vaccines], being a nephrologist for a long time, the potential for aluminum and central nervous system toxicity was well established by dialysis data. To think there isn’t some possible problem here is unreal.”

According to Kennedy, CDC emails obtained through a freedom of information request show that the agency tried to manipulate the data in an attempt to hide the findings, but the association persisted.1

Why aren’t more media outlets reporting on this corruption?

“The press has been compromised,” declared Kennedy. A lot of money flows from the pharmaceutical industry to news outlets. During a non-election year, roughly 70% of advertising revenue at a major TV network can come from pharmaceutical companies, according to Kennedy.1

To fight back against the corruption, Kennedy has launched The World Mercury Project (WorldMercuryProject.org), which is dedicated to exposing the corruption in both government and industry, as well as getting mercury removed from vaccines.

Kennedy has embarked on an epic battle that is on the scale of David and Goliath:

  • Congress won’t conduct a thorough investigation.

  • The regulatory agencies “have been captured.”1

  • Courts and lawyers that would normally provide the needed scrutiny have been rendered obsolete by the Vaccine Act.

  • The press has been largely bought off.

  • Medical doctors are scared to lose their license or be discredited if they come out against vaccines.

  • Scientific journals are afraid to publish opposing viewpoints because many of the journals receive revenue from the large pharmaceutical companies.

What can you do?

According to Kennedy, “What we need is sunlight. If you put a little sunlight on the controversy, the whole thing is going to fall apart.”1

I agree.

And, “We the People” are the ones who can provide that sunlight:

  • Let’s stop taking the word of the CDC and the vaccine industry on blind faith.

  • Let’s challenge the “authority” by thinking for ourselves.

  • Let’s do our own homework and decide if the current vaccines are right for our children.

  • Let’s start talking about. Let’s start discussing the corruption that lies beneath the vaccine industry, including the corruption at the CDC and the FDA: tell a friend, write a post on social media, write a letter to your Congressman, the President, or your local newspaper.

  • Let’s support the people who are challenging the status quo in search of the truth, like Kennedy.

“We will win this…I know how to fight them because I’ve spent a lifetime fighting big-shots and fighting bullies. And, that’s who they are. That’s whom we are dealing with today-people who have the arrogance of power. People who believe they can get away with anything, including destroying the lives of our children. I’m not going to let them do that.”2

Curbs on junk food ads No 1 priority in fighting childhood obesity, says study

Dramatic curbs on the advertising of junk food and drink to children is the policy measure that will be most effective in reducing the growing epidemic of childhood obesity, according to a group of more than 70 health experts.

The Food Foundation group calls for a ban on TV advertising of unhealthy food and drink up to the 9pm watershed and on sponsorship deals between companies that produce them and sports events like the Olympics. The recommendations come after complaints the government’s recently published childhood obesity strategy did not go far enough.

Anna Taylor, executive director of Food Foundation, a thinktank which led the year-long study, said: “While it is good to see concerted action by the government on reformulation of processed foods, we must, at the same time, take action to help our children eat fewer processed foods.

“Parents are fighting a losing battle if their children are being constantly bombarded with advertising which idealises fast food. Other countries have managed to control this. Why can’t we?”

Children are targeted in front of family TV programmes like The X-Factor and in their bedrooms and outside with friends via cyber games and Facebook ads on their smartphones, say experts.

Modern digital technology allows customised advertising, so that ads for snacks pop up at moments of heightened excitement for a child playing an online game, while McDonalds restaurants feature as important locations in Pokemon Go in Japan.

The 73 leading health and obesity experts from 41 organisations will say in a report to be launched in parliament next week that greater control of advertising and sponsorship by companies selling unhealthy food and drinks is the No 1 priority if the UK is to bring down the soaring obesity rate.

At present, advertising of foods described as high in fat, salt or sugar are banned in programmes predominately watched by children. But the experts will argue for greater restrictions, including a ban on all forms of non-broadcast advertising of these food and drinks to children.

The latest figures from the school measurement programme shows that one in five children in England is obese in year 6, the last year of primary school. One in three is either overweight or obese.

An overweight mother and child.

The experts have assessed the evidence for a large array of policies from around the world to develop England’s first food environment policy index, a measure of the effectiveness of the actions governments are taking. A similar index has already been published for other countries.

The next priority on the experts’ list is the nationwide implementation of the sugar tax by 2018. The third priority is an ongoing effort to reduce the sugar, fat and salt in processed food. Britain gets credit for the sugar tax, which is the number two policy on the experts’ list and will be brought in across the UK in 2018, and also for the work to reduce the sugar, fat and salt content of processed foods, which is third on their list.

But controls on advertising and sponsorship are even more urgently needed, say the experts, who include academics such as Profs Susan Jebb and Mike Rayner from the University of Oxford, Simon Capewell from the University of Liverpool, Corinna Hawkes and Geof Rayner from City, University of London, and Harry Rutter from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr Tim Lobstein of the World Obesity Federation, a member of the expert panel, said food companies and advertisers would put up strong resistance to the changes, adding: “We know they will use any means to weaken and undermine such measures.

“We need stronger regulation to prevent secret lobbying, private political funding and pro-business bias at the heart of government”.

The Obesity Health Alliance, a coalition of more than 30 organisations, said: “The food and drink industry wouldn’t spend billions of pounds each year on advertising and marketing if it didn’t work. We know that the pester power of younger children and the spending power of teenagers is influenced by what they see on TV, the internet and on their phone.

“Failing to tackle junk food advertising is a failure to acknowledge the very real effect the environment has on our children’s habits and ultimately, obesity rates.”

Public Health England, which was commissioned by the government to review the evidence to inform its obesity strategy, found that in 2014, the food industry spent £256m promoting “unhealthy” products sold in retail alone. One of its key recommendations was to “significantly reduce opportunities to market and advertise high sugar food and drink products to children and adults across all media including digital platforms and through sponsorship”.

But the government ignored PHE’s advice. The childhood obesity strategy, launched after much delay this summer, omitted any mention of advertising or sponsorship by the fast food industry, such as occurred in the UK Olympics with Coca Cola and McDonalds.

At a childhood obesity summit last week, Richard Dobbs, a senior partner at the management consultancy firm McKinsey’s, which produced a major report on the interventions that are likely to help reduce obesity in November 2014, said broadcasters had lobbied against advertising curbs on junk food to children being included in the government’s obesity strategy. “Media restrictions were going to cost ITV £500m,” he told the meeting. “It is not surprising ITV fought this quite hard.”

The World Health Organisation’s Europe office recently warned of the increasing sophistication of digital advertising and called on all countries to take action to block the promotion of unhealthy food and drinks to children. Its report described the use of smartphone games and social media platforms to access children.

“Taken together, the creative tactics and analytics … equate to a brand appointing a personal marketer to each child, locating and identifying those who are most susceptible to their messages, encouraging them to send marketing messages to their friends, and following them throughout the day, at moments of happiness, frustration, hunger and intent, delivering advertising with the maximum impact, and directing them to the nearest place to buy foods to ‘fix’ their current emotional state.”

The Committee of Advertising Practice launched a consultation on restrictions on the non-broadcasting advertising of food and drink to children, including online, in May and is expected to report next month.

How others are tackling obesity

Other rich countries have taken bold measures to face up to the obesity challenge.

Canadian province of Quebec took a tough line on advertising to children as early as 1980. All ads for food products as well as toys aimed at under-13s were banned from all types of media, including radio, television, the web, mobile phones, printed materials, signage and promotional material.

Experts think it paid off. French speaking families in Quebec were 19% less likely to eat fast food compared with those living in Ontario and spent 46% less on fast food, according to a household expenditure survey in 2007. Quebec has the lowest rates of childhood obesity in Canada.

France opted for a “soda tax” which, despite lobbying from industry, was imposed on drinks with added sugar and also with artificial sweeteners in January 2012. The tax of around 11 cents per 1.5 litres of drink, raises around €400m (£344m) a year. Soft drink sales dropped by 3.3% in 2012 and 3.4% in 2013. The French treasury is now considering whether to introduce a tax on fatty foods.

Sweden has taken action on school meals, with legislation in 2011 requiring them to be nutritious and free. The nutritional quality of the meals, calorie content and portion sizes are laid down for each age group. Water and milk are the only permitted drinks.

Schools and local authorities can evaluate the meals through a website called SkolmatSverige (School Food Sweden), where there are also questionnaires for the pupils and staff who eat the lunches.

Scotland is planning to introduce a good food nation bill, with a consultation in 2017. It promises to address procurement, waste, health, education and social justice. Groups are lobbying for farming and fishing to be included too.

Why a porn star is fighting California"s condom law: "It"s a women"s rights issue"

What does a porn star wear when she hits the campaign trail?

A smile.

And a black net brassiere with intricate straps. A very short, peach satin romper open to the waist. A whole lot of deeply tanned skin. And a fist full of “No on Proposition 60” pamphlets.

Not familiar with Proposition 60? Neither were most of the students Tasha Reign (her nom de scène) encountered on a sunny Monday at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

The measure, one of 17 on the California ballot in November, would require adult entertainers to wear condoms while filming sex scenes. To the 27-year-old feminist with a fan base she calls her Reigndeers, Proposition 60 is an assault on her human rights, her artistic freedom and the very constitution itself.

Not to mention that it is often anatomically impractical.

“I do acts where I literally could not use condoms, whether that be anal, whether that be double penetration, whether that be multiple guys,” Reign told the Guardian. “I cannot even imagine having a group sex scene like that.”

I hate the idea that some man is going to tell me what I can and can’t do

Tasha Reign

The logistical hurdles are endless. How do you ensure that the same condom doesn’t find itself inside more than one woman? Do you stop filming while an actor swaps latex? What if the condom breaks during a particularly rigorous outing? This isn’t, she notes, regular sex, 20 or so comfy minutes and it’s over.

“It’s extremely difficult for somebody to be able to maintain an erection for 45 minutes, and to be able to pop with a condom, especially,” she said. “The bigger issue for me is that it opens up the gateway to mandate my body. I hate the idea that some man is going to tell me what I can and can’t do.”

Reign is a practitioner of gonzo porn – none of the cuddly couples stuff for her. Her Twitter feed is filled with political activism and waxed genitalia. As she campaigns in front of UCSD’s Geisel Library, she attracts attention, if not always votes.

Ten minutes before every hour, as one class ends and another is set to begin, the tree-lined walkway fills with students. Young women weighed down with heavy backpacks slide their eyes Reign’s way before hurrying off. A young man on a skate board does a double take fast enough to cause whiplash.

Tasha Reign talks to UC San Diego students about Proposition 60, which would require adult entertainers to wear condoms during sex scenes.

She walks up to student after student, leading with a smile, campaign literature in her outstretched hand. More often than not on this day, her targets scurry by. The young men at the fraternity table across the path rebuff her.

“It’s like a lot of rejection,” Reign says with a pout. “When they say no, I’m not used to it, actually.”

But she is not deterred. “Are you going to vote on Prop 60?” she begins, over and over. “Let me tell you about it. I’m an adult film star.”

The day after her UCSD foray, she arrives at California State University, Long Beach. In her first hour, she gives her pitch 18 times – 19 if you count the guy who said he wasn’t voting but hung around to talk to her anyway – and posed for a selfie with a young man in full Dodgers regalia.

I want to be able to say: I’m a sex worker. I have a choice in the way that I protect my genitals

Tasha Reign

“This would take away the choice we have to use condoms or not,” Reign tells them. The measure, she says, “incentivizes people to sue adult film stars, giving them access to their personal names, their personal home address, taking your tax dollars and putting it toward regulating an industry that does a really good job at self-regulating itself.”

“It’s a women’s rights issue,” she says. And “it’s also a freedom of speech issue.” And “it’s something the performers, the majority of us, don’t want passed.” And “we just want you guys to vote no.” And “tell your friends.”

Michael Weinstein, president of the Aids Healthcare Foundation, is the measure’s major backer. Neither he nor his organization responded to repeated requests for comment.

The Vote Yes on Prop 60 website says “condoms in porn is about protecting California employees at work.” Although Reign and other adult film actors undergo regular screening for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, such testing is voluntary.

The state’s Republican, Democratic and Libertarian parties have officially come out against the measure, along with Aids Project LA, Equality California, the Transgender Law Center and the San Francisco Aids Foundation.

Most major newspapers in the state recommend a no vote. The Los Angeles Times’ editorial against the measure points out that “any resident who spots a violation in a pornographic film shot in the state could sue and collect cash from the producers and purveyors if they prevail in court.”

Reign is a registered Democrat who supports Hillary Clinton for president. She had planned to vote for Bernie Sanders in the primary, but her mother persuaded her otherwise. She lives in the hills above Los Angeles with her Chihuahua mixes, Cinderella and Bambi, and her pot-bellied piglets, Harley and Quinn.

She graduated from UCLA with a degree in women’s studies. And she did not get into adult entertainment, she said, so she could be pushed around by a man like Weinstein “who has never been a sex worker” and doesn’t respect the choices she and her fellow performers make.

She doesn’t believe that such a person “should come in and tell me, on my own adult film set that I’m producing in my own home that I need to use a condom”.

“I want to be able to say: I’m a sex worker. I have a choice in the way that I protect my genitals. This is a huge issue for me.”

Though overall age-adjusted death rates for cancer in the US have declined in the previous decade, inform that to about half a million individuals who will get a cancer diagnosis this year, according to data from the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the Nationwide Cancer Institute (NCI). The shock and emotional soreness related with the 6 letter word are devastating.

With considerable national and personal expenditures in grownup cancer investigation leading to higher survival and high quality of daily life for some cancers (breast), accomplishment at treating other cancers (pancreatic) has not yet been attained. The unique biology of specified tumors and their potential to mutate has largely prevented researchers from unlocking the crucial to obtaining larger 5-12 months survival charges.

With new techniques obtainable to fight cancer, like a novel strategy recognized as “immune modulation” helping to accomplish substantial gains in longevity for patients with melanoma and specific varieties of lung cancer, it is crucial to nevertheless recognize that a lot operate demands to be accomplished in our fight against cancer.

Keeping this in mind, academic institutions have begun to comprehend the worth of data sharing and scientific collaboration in an try to discover new treatment options and modalities to approach cancer, both in kids and grownups. The days of study groups competing towards one particular one more hunting at related conceptual puzzles is now getting replaced by unified approaches with so-named “dream teams”–groups of focused researchers whom freely collaborate between institutions–pioneered by the organization Stand Up To Cancer, (SU2C) according to Philip Sharp, Ph.D, Nobel Laureate, Institute Professor at MIT’s David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Investigation, and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee for SU2C.

Unknown“This superb concept of S2UC– of collaboration and bringing together teams of scientists that compliment one particular other– and raising money by appealing to the public and massive donors changed the fashion of cancer analysis by making it far more collaborative and interactive discipline,” explained Sharp. “I located the vision compelling and knew this would be a really public face of cancer research and wanted it to be as higher a quality and have as large an affect as it possibly could.”

Dr. Sharp PhotoAs Sharp explains, SU2C appeals to professionals in the area of cancer study and standard science relevant to a targeted concept. It is not meant to duplicate fundamental science work completed by NCI or sophisticated cancer therapeutics investigations in the personal sector, as Sharp explained, particularly in the context of discussing translational investigation which ideally has a shorter time to reach patients.

“We have tried to uncover the very best teams that have representatives from those communities and then leverage them with what we feel are proximal breakthroughs that have not been moved to translation as fast as attainable and put money there and make that come about,” described Sharp.  “People who are donating this income want to see the advantages of these new approaches as fast as feasible.”

Although the conceptual theme of immune modulation was component of the early perform of the early dream teams in accordance to Sharp, the notion of “personalized medicine”–designing therapeutics following identifying a certain mutation in a cancer cell has been a viable technique going forward. “We have also produced a significant investment in the immune strategy to cancer analysis as nicely.”

Sharp’s research in the preliminary stages of his profession targeted on the molecular biology of gene expression and RNA splicing in cancer cells. In 1977, he elucidated the mechanism of RNA splicing, and identified that genes contain so-known as “nonsense” segments which are edited or eliminated by cells as they procedure genetic data. This approach is integral to the comprehending of the genetic basis for cancer and illness progression, and Sharp was subsequently awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medication for this discovery. His research is now  focused on comprehending how specific molecules of RNA can activate certain genes, referred to as RNA interference. This has altered how researchers strategy cell biology and may be a new supply of therapeutics in the long term.

Sharp’s dedication to SU2C more than the previous six many years, has led to a adjust in the paradigm of how we technique cancer remedy. As co-founder of Biogen (now Biogen Idec), and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, an early stage therapeutics firm and Magen Biosciences Inc., a biotechnology organization developing compounds to make certain well being of human skin, Sharp has been a pioneer in selling the use of molecular biology and genomics, and now “convergence,” as approaches to more efficient drug growth.

And, as he detailed in a white paper from MIT in 2011, the concept of “convergence”–the merging of existence sciences, physical sciences and engineering is now generally viewed as an critical method to perform meaningful investigation to obtain viable solutions to cancer biology and therapy in 2014.  As Sharp emphasizes, convergence represents the so-named threerd “frontier” in the progression from the first two milestones accomplished in the past thirty many years: the advent of cell and molecular biology and genomic sequencing.

Employing such “dream teams” to method breast, pancreatic, melanoma and lung cancers fosters collaboration amid huge academic institutions, even though promoting the concept of “translational medicine” as an efficient way to carry laboratory advances to the bedside, in accordance to Sharp. For this novel strategy,  S2UC researchers are viewed as leaders in their strategy to streamlining cancer analysis.

“One of the major charges of our institution is to deal with patients, perform substantial quality investigation, but to make positive we disseminate that study as broadly and widely as feasible,” explained Robison.  “We help to disseminate and facilitate getting access to our information.”

After 50 many years, Dr Hamlin is even now fighting to end fistula in Ethiopia

Dr Catherine Hamlin

Obstetric fistula is a degrading problem in which females who suffer traumatising labours are left incontinent and typically ostracised by their neighborhood. Since 1959, Dr Catherine Hamlin has worked to restore the lives of females with fistula in Ethiopia by carrying out surgeries, coaching physicians and nurses and fundraising to build hospitals. On Worldwide Finish Fistula Day, she shares her experiences under.

We [Hamlin and her late husband Reginald] came to Ethiopia from Australia in response to an advertisement to perform as obstetrician/gynaecologists at a hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We had been touched and appalled by the sadness of our very first fistula patient: a stunning youthful female in urine-soaked ragged outfits, sitting alone in our outpatients division away from the other waiting sufferers. We knew she was much more in require than any of the other folks. She had been by way of a lengthy labour of 5 days with only the village females to assist. And so we noticed the very first of numerous fistula sufferers.

Five per cent of all girls who give birth have an obstructed labour and are not able to deliver their child with out help, but a caesarean part or some other skilled delivery is not accessible for ladies in rural Ethiopia. The fistula sufferers are the survivors of an obstructed labour, many do not survive. The maternal death rate in Ethiopia is a single of the highest in Africa.

Fistula individuals are ashamed of their injuries and are usually ostracised by their village communities, residing alone and hiding from other folks, so the globe is not aware of them. When the word spread about our surgical treatment, females commenced arriving at the hospital from all more than the country hoping for the operation.

To cater for the demand we began fundraising and opened the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in 1974. More than the following thirty many years we opened five regional hospitals across the nation. Considering that then, we have treated about 40,000 girls for this preventable injury. We now operate in close collaboration with the Ethiopian ministry of well being and have escalating assistance from them.

Much has enhanced given that we started our function. The ministry of wellness has provided well being services to the rural population by creating wellness centres all through the countryside. The government also commenced a medical faculty at Addis university in 1966, which meant we could train our physicians there rather of sending them to train at a US-established healthcare education centre at Beirut University. Now we have medical doctors from our own universities, but unfortunately couple of are inclined to function in the rural places – numerous have left Ethiopia hoping to dwell a far better daily life abroad. This is a fantastic tragedy and loss. Our country hospitals have nearly no doctors in them.

Going forward our best require is to have a effectively-skilled midwife in every single village in Ethiopia. We set up a midwifery instruction school in 2007. We take 12th grade students from countryside schools to train on a 4-year degree program. These girls go back to their houses to work in antenatal clinics connected to the several well being centres. We are hoping to spread our midwives during the country, but they need medical doctors in the referral hospitals to do the caesarean sections.

We can not do it all alone. We require to proceed to operate in closer collaboration with the ministry of well being and essential partner organisations to eradicate obstetric fistula from Ethiopia. Then females won’t have to suffer this devastating ordeal.

Dr. Ludwig Blau very first identified how effectively the cherry worked in fighting gout soreness. Due to an very painful gout assault, the medical doctor was confined to a wheelchair for numerous days. It was throughout this time a buddy informed him about gout and cherries.

Dr. Blau was so thrilled about the good benefits he personally skilled that he made the decision to perform analysis on the gout-fighting capability of the fruit. He soon recruited 12 gout sufferers to take element in a gout examine. The participants drank a glass of cherry juice or ate a single-half pound of cherries each day throughout the review.

The final results of the examine unveiled uric acid ranges lowered down to pre-gout ranges. Man smoking a cigarette

‘Even in discussing smoking, alcohol and obesity, the real suggestions of the WHO are ignored.’ Photograph: Graham Turner for the Guardian

The World Health Organisation published its Globe Cancer Report on Monday. It is a hefty document of 800 pages which warns of a “tidal wave” of cancer facing the world in excess of the next twenty many years. The media response to this news on the whole has been sadly, but probably predictably, sensationalist.

Ignored is the report’s conclusion that only half of the 24m cases projected by 2035 could be preventable. Ignored is the conclusion that the main causes for this boost are population growth and increased daily life expectancy. Rather, the target has almost solely centred on other aspects contributing to preventable cancers, and then really selectively.

The report identifies many key sources of preventable cancer they consist of smoking, infections, alcohol, weight problems, radiation and air pollution. Of those sources, infections, radiation and air pollution have been set aside and discussion has zeroed in on the narrow subset of what are becoming described as “life-style choices”. Simply because to speak about air pollution or infections or radiation would call for a discussion of wealth inequalities, of residing problems, of asymmetry of information, of destructive environmental options. And all that is also difficult.

Even in discussing smoking, alcohol and obesity, the real suggestions of the WHO are ignored. They speak of more funds going into early detection, of regulating meals and drink companies a lot more tightly, of a tax on sugared drinks, of clearer labelling on alcohol, of incentives on banning smoking in public locations. But the accountability of manufacturers not to make unhealthy products and marketplace them aggressively and the responsibility of the state to regulate huge organization are being airbrushed out of the report. Such suggestions are not trendy. Red tape and corporate obligation are enemies of enterprise and contrary to financial growth.

Instead, the focus is on the facile idea of personalized duty and the blaming of the individual a subset of a subset of a subset of what the report talks about. I lost my father to cancer. He didn’t smoke or drink or consume processed meals. But why ought to that matter? Why are we receiving into the discussion of defending some sick people and not other individuals? Why are we painting ourselves into the corner exactly where a single of the largest global killers, by some means, gets the fault of the impacted?

In an setting where more and far more of us are residing in small hutches inside urban environments, breathing in polluted air, doing work longer and longer hours of sedentary jobs, with poor accessibility to good quality information, exercising space or fresh make, bombarded 24/seven by marketing telling us to consume and drink the incorrect point, it is a ludicrous place to say that multi-billion companies and the state can wash their hands of all consequences by telling us “you should have been healthier, you know”.

Naturally, personal alternatives and accountability for one’s personal life-style matter tremendously. There may possibly be a warped logic in, essentially, scaring individuals into generating better choices. But a naive and selective studying of this kind of a complicated and thorough report lets significantly bigger culprits off the hook and avoids critical conversations. It encourages the belief that 1 can protect oneself from this “tidal wave” by putting out their fag and wearing a snorkel and, if they don’t, drowning was their personal fault.

Top lessons from 50 many years of fighting the tobacco business | Nicholas Freudenberg

Can lessons from cutting tobacco use apply to other dangerous industries? Photograph: Alex Segre/Alamy

This month’s 50th anniversary of the Very first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Wellness supplies a bittersweet reminder of the promise and the limitations of public wellness activism to curb corporate promotion of behaviors and lifestyles associated with premature death and preventable sickness and damage. In the half century because the report was launched, the proportion of Americans who smoke has been reduce in half. A new report in the Journal of the American Health care Association estimates that tobacco control efforts in the United States have prevented 8 million premature deaths and extended the average lifespan by on average almost twenty years of life for the men and women who did not take up smoking because of prevention campaigns, increased tobacco taxes or smoking bans. All round, the success in reducing tobacco use has additional two.three years to the daily life of the regular American guy and 1.six many years to the regular American woman.

But this progress could have been attained in far much less time had not every single preventive policy been opposed by the tobacco market and had politicians beholden to the tobacco lobby severed these ties far more speedily. These delays doomed several a lot more to tobacco-connected illnesses. And regardless of the progress in this nation, the estimated toll from tobacco in this century is 1 billion premature deaths, far more than 10 instances the toll for the 20th century. The major cause so several a lot more people will fall ill and die agonizing, early tobacco-associated deaths is that the tobacco industry has adapted the lessons on advertising and marketing and undermining regulation that it realized in the United States to emerging markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Sadly, the tobacco sector is not alone in contributing to America’s poor health standing amid developed nations. In 2010, guns took the lives of 31,076 Americans in homicides, suicides and unintentional shootings, the equivalent of more than 85 deaths every day. Yet another 73,505 Americans had been taken care of in hospital emergency departments for non-fatal gunshot wounds. While the scientific understanding and technology to significantly lessen this toll are obtainable, like the tobacco business, the gun sector and its allies in the National Rifle Association have steadfastly blocked any progress to make guns much less accessible or safer.

Similarly, the alcohol industry contributes to alcohol relevant injuries and illnesses by aggressive advertising, expanding the density of alcohol outlets, and creating items this kind of as wine coolers and malt liquors to appeal to young drinkers. A recent examine located that between 2001 and 2009, youth publicity to television alcohol promoting elevated by 71%. Excess alcohol consumption accounts for about 4,700 annual deaths amongst underage drinkers. Another review estimated that the mixed market place worth for the alcohol business of unlawful underage drinking and adult issue drinking accounted for between 37.five and 48.eight% of consumer expenditures for alcohol.

How has it come to pass that firms now have a stronger influence on the well being of Americans than public wellness officials, medical professionals or hospitals? How have companies succeeded in convincing so several officials in the White Home, Congress and the supreme court that protecting profits is a higher national priority than guarding public overall health?

In the final decades, a corporate consumption complex has solidified its influence on American politics and the economic system. This internet of client companies, the bankers and hedge money that lend them money, the trade associations that lobby for them, and the global ad agencies that market place their goods has been in a position to use its campaign contributions, lobbying and lawsuits to accomplish its business targets even when the vast majority of Americans disagree with these. Like the military industrial complicated that Dwight Eisenhower warned about just before he left public workplace, the corporate consumption complex threatens our democracy as well as our wellness and environment.

Are there lessons from our partial successes in cutting tobacco use that could be applied to decreasing the power of the corporate consumption complicated and its brand of hyperconsumption? I propose three.

1. Efforts to reduce tobacco use succeeded when Americans came to think that the correct to breathe clean air trumped the tobacco’s industry’s right to encourage its products without having public oversight. Right now, we need to have to mobilize dad and mom to demand our children’s proper not to be shot and not to be targeted by advertising and marketing of quickly food, sugary drinks and snacks that have contributed to a 176% enhance in the prevalence of diabetes amongst 1980 and 2011.

two. Portion of the accomplishment in reducing smoking came from forcing Large Tobacco to reimburse state governments for the expenses of caring for men and women with tobacco-connected illnesses. Enacting policies that would require processed meals producers to reimburse taxpayers and victims of the diet plan-associated diseases exacerbated by their promotion of large body fat, sugar and salt diets and alcohol producers for individuals injured or killed by the binge drinking.

three. Fund independent challenging-hitting prevention campaigns developed to undo the deceptive marketing Huge Tobacco had sponsored. We can do the same issue by counterbalancing the media and ad campaigns right now focusing on younger individuals to consume bad food items and glamorize guns.

In 1964, most observers imagined it was politically impossible to defeat the tobacco business and to deliver about considerable reductions in tobacco use. Today, modifying the practices of the firearms, alcohol and processed meals industries appears a similarly challenging task. But if we can apply the lessons from tobacco to accelerate changes in dangerous organization practices, probably we won’t need to wait yet another 50 years to prevent the deaths, illnesses, injuries and rising healthcare expenses that today’s science could avert.
