Trump tried to burn down Obamacare. He set his hair on fire instead | Ross Barkan

Burning Obamacare to the ground was always a House Republican obsession that Trump, in the heat of the campaign, took up to spite the president while tossing a little red meat to Republicans. “Repeal and replace” is alliterative, after all: it sounds nice enough on an arena stage. It’s just hard to pull off in the real world, as Donald Trump found out on Friday.

Blessed with total control of government, Republicans can only think of how best to burn the house down – and they’re not even doing a good job at that. The House speaker, Paul Ryan, unjustly heralded as a policy wonk, tried to rush his healthcare bill to the floor for a vote on Thursday, only to find the moderates and extremists in his party rebelling. On Friday, Donald Trump was forced to pull the bill, due to lack of support from his own party.

It was a humiliating defeat, which he tried to blame – unbelievably – on the Democrats.

Paul Ryan on failed healthcare bill: ‘This is a disappointing day’

Ryan’s Trumpcare was a horrendous concoction and should disabuse fawning congressional reporters of the notion that the speaker is a man of deep intellect and self-reflection. Had the bill not fallen flat on its face this Friday, it would have had little chance of passing the Senate.

What remains is the fact that Donald Trump couldn’t close the deal. He is hoping everyone blames Ryan, and Trump is lucky that his supporters might do just that. The diehards, inhabiting his post-factual universe, will simply write Ryan off as a loser – they hated him anyway – and hail their king for the bounties he’s still promising.

But healthcare will ultimately be Donald Trump’s problem. That’s how our politics work. So far, the president has been more fatuous than fascistic, though he belatedly realized what an albatross the bill had become. His negotiating powers, whatever they ever were, failed.

Were Trump the deal-making genius his ego tricked himself into believing he was, he would never have taken up this healthcare venture. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found that only 17% of Americans approved of Trumpcare. Trump’s poorest and least educated supporters had much to lose and nothing to gain from the legislation.

That’s why demolishing Obamacare never made sense. After all, Trump, via Steve Bannon, promised economic nationalism, a robust spending plan for those who he believed deserved it most: the white and native born. Trump wasn’t going to lose any votes by focusing on immigration and infrastructure spending at the expense of Obamacare, which rank-and-file conservatives resent less now that Obama himself has been removed from the equation.

President ‘pulled out every stop’ to pass healthcare bill, Spicer says

Far from upholding the most basic protections for the working-class, the Trump administration has, instead, evolved into one of the most rightwing in recent memory. It is stocked with the kind of appointees (Mick Mulvaney, Tom Price) who could have been plucked from Congress by Presidents Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio.

This is the difference between Trump and someone like the French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, the Front National leader who identifies closely with the billionaire. Le Pen’s fiscal platform is unapologetically leftist, rejecting the austerity measures embraced by Europe’s financial class.

Trump rages with all the hate of Le Pen and none of the savvy. Blaming Ryan for Trumpcare’s failure will not absolve him of trying to do a very stupid thing. If he chooses to weaken healthcare in other ways – to somehow prove Obama left the country with a self-destructing system – he’ll still be the president when premiums skyrocket as insurers struggle to adapt to this instability.

In 2018, 2019, and 2020, screaming Obama’s name won’t matter anymore. The country will just know President Trump and the damage being done.

What makes celebrity meltdowns entertainment instead of tragedy? | David Ferguson

When I was in my 20s, I remember my therapist patiently listening to me complain about how out-of-my-depth I often felt around other gay men. I was asking her why they always seemed so effortlessly aloof and cool, whereas I was – and to some extent, still am – a slobbering golden retriever of a person, quivering with eagerness to be your new best friend.

“You’ll waste a lot of time and spoil a lot of happiness comparing your insides to other people’s outsides,” she told me.

I think about this a lot when I see famous people – rock stars, celebrities, politicians – going into meltdown mode. Trainwreck TV is one of our culture’s most avid pleasures. In the words of Edina Monsoon from Absolutely Fabulous, “It’s the only blood sport they haven’t banned, darling.”

Right now, everyone is waiting to see what the next eruption from Kanye West will be now that he’s out of the hospital after months – some would say years – of erratic behavior, bizarre concert spectacles and public meltdowns. It’s almost expected, since the Grammy nominations were announced this week and West was again shut out of the major categories.

A few years ago the spectacle du jour was Amanda Bynes, and before that, Britney Spears when she shaved her head and ended up under psychiatric care.

We’ve shaken our heads and tutted over the breakdowns of Mariah Carey and Courtney Love, Amy Winehouse and Gary Busey, Katt Williams and Dave Chappelle, Lindsay Lohan and Anna Nicole Smith – any celebrities who have had the misfortune to exhibit symptoms of mental illness while living in the public eye.

We take a certain sanctimonious pleasure in these people’s public disintegration and show shockingly little compassion, as though their wildly successful careers and personal fortunes make their pain more acceptable than that of mere mortals.

If a random woman we don’t know starts babbling nonsense and getting hysterical while we’re out shopping, it’s tragic. We avert our eyes. We tell our families when we get home how unsettling and upsetting it was. But when Spears does it, it’s a Rolling Stone cover story that we consume with the eagerness of kids tearing into a bag of candy.

It’s the same mentality that allows a racist troll like Milo Yiannopoulos to airily wave away the steaming, reeking mountain of harassment his followers and supporters firehosed at Saturday Night Live and Ghostbusters actress Leslie Jones, mostly on Twitter. Leslie Jones is a rich and famous actress; who cares if people say nasty things about her on the internet?

At what point do we stop valuing celebrities’ humanity?

Is it an income-level thing? Kanye West has got a lot of money. He’s one of the most well-known performers on the planet who isn’t Beyoncé or Beyoncé-adjacent. He has broken paradigms and yes, over-extended his brand, as it were, in a couple of areas, but he’s also a creative young person with a young family under tremendous pressure who lost his beloved mother nine years ago.

He has written openly about his love for liquor, cocaine and other intoxicants. It does not take a tremendous amount of imagination to piece together what may have happened here to a stressed-out artist in pain.

Let’s pretend for a moment that it isn’t Kanye West, but Keith West, who you knew in college who works for a life insurance company now. What if his mother died in surgery and he began a multi-year downward spiral?

Would you be gawking if Keith got placed on involuntary hold in a psychiatric unit? Would you be sharing links about Keith on Twitter and Facebook and marveling that someone could become such a mess?

Kanye West may be, as President Obama once said, “a jackass” from time to time. But he’s also still a person.

Millions of dollars in the bank doesn’t mean anything when you want your mom and she’s gone, I suspect, any more than the significantly less princely sum in my own checking account does. You can’t buy five more minutes to be with your dead mom for any amount of money, large or small.

So, maybe the next time you start to click on that Perez Hilton link about whichever celebrity’s mind has most recently hit the big bug-zapper, take a second. Ask yourself how you’d feel if your life’s most humiliating, confused, disoriented moment was out there for public amusement.

If the person suffering at the other end of that hyperlink was Keith and not Kanye, would you still click it?

Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes, Dare Instead

Successful people are not afraid to make mistakes. They know that they learn from them. After every mistakes they make, they are aware that success is just around the corner. Idea is the first step towards riches. However, the idea may never see the light of day if you don’t dare. Success is impossible without the don’t courage to act boldly. Even if you fail, be persistent. Complete the tasks and achieve your dreams.

Staying in you comfort zone is easy, it takes no action, but it also doesn’t bring any results. By staying passive you allow other influences control your life. Instead of you controlling your situation, you allow other things and other people control you.

Why is it so hard

Although daring seems intimidating, if you can control your mind to avoid all the fears that stop you from being great, you can achieve things you have always dreamed of. You’ll live an amazing life. If you are struggling with self-esteem, you need to become aware that you are the person who controls your own thought. By having more positive attitude, you make more positive results. Act. Release your fear. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Don’t be afraid of being judged. People will judge you whatever you do.

It is easier than it seems

By replacing your negative thoughts by positive ones in every situation you find yourself, you make your subconscious mind have positive attitude about all the situations you find yourself. Thus, you create your positive mindset. Subsequently, your positive mindset can only bring positive results. And, you’ll live the life you’ve always wanted.

The key to every success story is to never give up. If you analyze all successful people in this world, you’ll find out that they made more mistakes than everyone else. However, persistence made them great. They did not give up. This is crucial for your success story.

What to do

Go meet new people, take the trip abroad you’ve always dreamed of, start learning a new language, start exercising. You’ll see that it was the first step that was the most difficult to make. After you make the first one, the next one seems to be easier than before. When you start doing it, you’ll find yourself with more self-confidence. And, you’ll be ready for more difficult tasks such as find a better job, start your own business, immigrate to a new country, start studying at the University etc. Don’t worry when you make a mistake during your journey. Everyone makes them. People who don’t make mistakes, don’t do much. Learn from your mistakes and don’t let them discourage you or make you feel bad about yourself. It is impossible to succeed without making at least one mistake. Furthermore, you need to learn how to encourage yourself. You don’t need encouragement from other people. You’ll never find it, anyway. Therefore, don’t feel the need to be motivated from other people.

It all depends on your thoughts and actions

You are the only motivation you need. Don’t blame others for your failures, because you are in control of your own destiny. Willpower and self discipline make you stronger, better and more courageous. Take action and be a doer. Don’t let laziness and passiveness discourage you. Be certain that you’ll make mistakes. It’s part of the game. Be initiative and start acting now. Imagine all the results you’ll get from your actions. Become aware of all the experience you’ll gather from your journey. Imagine how much a better person you’ll become from all those actions. Become aware of your confidence. Imagine the results. Become aware of the success. Have faith. And you’ll get what you always wanted.

Sore throats to be tested by pharmacists instead of GPs under NHS move

Sore throat sufferers will visit their pharmacist instead of their GP for an on-the-spot test to see if they need antibiotics under a new NHS initiative.

The planned walk-in “sore throat test and treat” service will be rolled out across the country over the next year, after a six-month pilot project. It could help relieve pressure on family doctors and tackle antibiotic resistance, according to NHS England.

The sore throat test and treat service, which was piloted with 35 patients treated at Boots pharmacies, involves taking a swab test with results provided in five minutes to see if a course of antibiotics is needed.

The initiative could save the health service £35m a year and reduce GP consultations by as many as 800,000 if the scheme is taken up nationwide, according to NHS officials. About 1.2 million people visit their GP with sore throat symptoms every year.

The NHS chief executive, Simon Stevens, said the scheme would be rolled out across the country over the course of the coming year and is one of eight medical innovations that will be introduced.

“Necessity is the mother of invention, and health care worldwide is now fizzing with smart innovation,” Stevens said. “In the NHS, we’re now taking practical action to develop and fast-track these new techniques into mainstream patient care.”

The introduction of the new walk-in scheme follows news last month that the Department of Health had drawn up proposals to cut funding for pharmacies by 12% from December. The pharmaceutical services negotiating committee described the cuts as madness, and said they would damage the NHS and social care, the BBC reported.

The initiative is part of the NHS innovation accelerator scheme, designed to help with the adoption of new treatments and technologies.

The programme’s founder, Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS England’s national medical director, said: “With rising demand and escalating costs, innovation is not an option but a necessity if we are to build a sustainable NHS.

“The innovations selected for this programme have the potential to deliver better value for the taxpayer whilst making patient interactions with the NHS safer and more personal.”

Meanwhile, the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has urged those eligible for a free flu vaccination to take up the offer.

As part of the national “stay well this winter” campaign, Khan called on people more at risk to prepare for the cold weather.

Children aged between two and seven, adults with chronic health conditions, pregnant women and people over 65 are eligible for a free fluvaccine, according to NHS England.

Claire Ward, the chair of Pharmacy Voice, welcomed the initiative as a means of reducing patient reliance on antibiotics but said the announcement had come at a time when community pharmacies faced “significant cuts”.

“Clearly we’re concerned this would make it difficult for some communities to have access to the healthcare professionals delivering these kinds of services if the cuts result in fewer pharmacists being available.

“Here is the NHS doing what we would expect it to do, but at the same time it is in the context of the pay master – the Department of Health – making significant cuts to community pharmacies.

“We need this type of service to be accessible to all community pharmacies. We are concerned that while on the one hand it is promoting great ideas and visions, on the other it’s taking away the funding that makes community pharmacies viable.”

Don’t Go For Flu Vaccine. Do This Instead!

I’m blogging today regarding an interesting topic that the FDA, and other health associations doesn’t want you to know.

Well, it’s this that your flu vaccines can make you more sicker.

And amazingly, there is a natural remedy that will blow your mind apart.

But first little about the “Negatives of the Flu Vaccines” based on my research collections:

According to a latest research, carried out on flu vaccine. It’s becoming clear that H1N1 infection, gets aggravated by flu vaccine. Also, other illnesses becomes more pronounced, and their chances increases.

If this is not alarming enough?!

I will write for you another reference put forward by the CNN in 2007, here.

Apart from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and some, other prominent doctors prescriptions which go in favor of flu vaccines. Scientific research has hugely failed in proving the efficacy of flu vaccines.

The strong lobby system of famous pharmaceutical companies, are in joint contract with powerful Government agencies that just abruptly, fabricate any research or alternative preventive techniques that go in favor of the holistic way of disease treatment.

The FDA has gone an extra mile as to reach out to mainstream holistic expert, I won’t name him here for personal reasons. To remove the astragalus as a preventive alternative cure against flu from his website.

So, some of you might now, be aware of the miracle natural prevention against flu vaccine??

Yes, it is ASTRAGALUS.

Astragalus can cure flus, cold, and even boost up your immune system in totality, to fight all kinds of diseases.

Once again, nullifying the false claims raised by the FDA regarding its impotency against antibacterial or antiviral uses. This herbal remedy has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and is lately, picking trend in the Western medicinal society lately. As it helps to boost and strengthen your immunity.

Research, has it that astragalus is potent against fighting sicknesses like ranging from as big as cancer to as minor as common cold. Astragalus, is also an adaptogen that means it build your immune system to fight aggressively against the invaders rather targeting them head-on.

I will give you another reference regarding astragalus cure against flu. The reference is of Janet Zand, CNS, MD, OMD, LAc, author of Smart Medicine for HealthierLiving. She writes in her book that since astragalus is multifaceted, and can cure all kinds of flus, and colds. So, it has much broader scope to prevnt H1N1.

Astragalus, can be used in much diversed way. According to Dr.Sears, M.D., “Our body is a balance of many functions, and to stay healthy, we need to maintain certain balance.

Kiran’s Recommendation:

Astragalus can be taken in form of teas, extracts, powder or capsules usually, present, at your local health stores. I recommend you to daily take 3 tablespoons of astragalus root powder. Either you can take the powder plainly as it has a light sweet, friendly taste or you can add it in your meals to boost the seasoning, and health-enhancing properties.

Nurses" leader to members: do not strike over pay offer lobby your MP instead

‘If you are a nurse, striking indicates abandoning your sufferers,’ Dr Peter Carter advised RCN representatives. Photograph: Alamy

The leader of Britain’s nurses has urged them not to strike above the government’s “insulting” spend provide and advised alternatively they target MPs with marginal seats to consider to force the overall health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, into a rethink.

Nurses would not be justified in taking action, which would be “abandoning” their sufferers, in spite of their rightful deep anger above currently being denied a 1% payrise, Dr Peter Carter, basic secretary of the Royal University of Nursing (RCN), told its yearly congress.

Carter combined a strongly worded assault on Hunt’s “blatantly unfair” determination to reject the NHS spend overview body’s recommendation of a 1% rise for all the NHS’s 1.35 million personnel in England with a heartfelt plea not to walk out in protest.

“I know you’re angry. But nonetheless insulting this government’s pay settlement is, and even so tough that tends to make issues for you, you do want to believe meticulously about any speak of strike action. But if you are a nurse, it implies abandoning your sufferers: leaving individuals babies in the neonatal unit, cancelling that visit to an elderly patient in the local community, strolling out of the emergency department or psychiatric ward,” he advised the four,000 representatives of the RCN’s 400,000 members gathered in Liverpool.

Carter’s intervention comes as other wellness unions – which includes Unison, Unite, the Royal College of Midwives and the GMB – put together either to ballot their members or seek the advice of them about a potential ballot above industrial action brief of and such as a strike. Unions are incensed at Hunt’s determination that only some NHS workers need to get the one% rise, with other individuals missing out due to the fact they currently get boosts to their cash flow by means of the NHS’s extended-established method of yearly shell out increments primarily based on someone’s skills and experience.

Alternatively of striking, nurses should inquire their MP regardless of whether he or she supports nurses obtaining the spend rise and use their electoral muscle – and that of their buddies and relatives – to punish individuals who do not at the ballot box subsequent Could, Carter mentioned.

“There are numerous MPs on all sides of the Residence of Commons that have small majorities, some just a couple of hundred, some even as lower as thirty or 40. There are about one,000 nurses in each and every constituency and if we mobilise ourselves I know that a lot of of people MPs will be seeking in excess of their shoulders and wondering if they will be re-elected at the basic election up coming yr.”

He mentioned nurses should seek to establish the views of all MPs, but afterwards conceded that these occupying the forty most marginal seats could be most well worth pursuing. He advised that nurses target Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs in the coming months as a way of pressuring Hunt to alter his mind.

Offered the latest volatility of politics given that Ukip’s emergence, even MPs with a majority of 2,000 or three,000, who would previously have been regarded safe, may be vulnerable to organised strain, he mentioned. “Now is the time to flush them [all MPs] out to say in which they are standing on well being workers’ salaries,” he additional.

Hunt should not turn into complacent about staff’s deep emotions about NHS spend or “trade” on the reality that he believed nurses should keep away from strike action.

Carter’s phone probably poses a dilemma for NHS unions, which are arranging to consider combined industrial action, if their ballots endorse that. Their present considering is to deploy an overtime ban as an preliminary tactic as a demonstrate of power some time this autumn.

A man has been mistakenly given a vasectomy by medics who had been supposed to be doing a minor process on him, a hospital has admitted.

The patient, who has not been named, went to the Royal Liverpool hospital for a minor urological operation but was wrongly made sterile by a surgeon.

Medics tried to reverse the error but it is not acknowledged regardless of whether the reversal was productive.

Health bosses at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Believe in stated they have apologised unreservedly to the patient.

They mentioned an inner investigation into the incident has been launched and the responsible surgeon has been suspended from carrying out operations pending the result.

An operation performed on the wrong physique part is classed as a “in no way occasion” by well being officials. The incidents are regarded by the government as so critical they need to in no way come about. Between April and September final 12 months there have been 148 such incidents recorded by NHS England.

A vasectomy is a minor operation, exactly where the tubes that carry sperm from a man’s testicles to the penis are cut, blocked or sealed. It is attainable for a vasectomy to be reversed but the achievement fee is about fifty five%.

The health care director of the Trust, Dr Peter Williams, stated: “We can verify that a patient who was scheduled to have different minor urological method was wrongly provided a vasectomy. Supplement Alert: Antioxidants Might Protect Cancer Cells Instead Of Protecting Us From Them

Troubling new analysis suggests that antioxidants—among our most cherished and heavily marketed of supplements—could be doing precisely the opposite of what they are marketed for. Alternatively of guarding towards cancer, antioxidant supplements may defend cancer cells from our body’s defenses.

A study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine displays that in mice that previously have cancer, antioxidant supplements lessen action of a gene called p53, the function of which is to decimate defective cells, including cancer cells. With p53 tuned down, the quantity of tumors in the mice tripled, as did their development fee and aggressiveness.

Antioxidants are a assortment of chemicals that “mop up” totally free radicals, the byproducts of cell metabolism that are also reactive for their (and our) very own good. Cost-free radical reactivity in the physique can injury or destroy healthful cells, and in some circumstances catalyze cell mutations that become cancerous.

Day 51: Vitamin E

Vitamin E (Photo credit: theogeo)

Although there’s no query that antioxidants derived from meals sources play a essential role in trying to keep free radicals in check out, the latest examine calls into question high ranges of antioxidant supplementation. Between the most well-liked antioxidant dietary supplements are Nutritional vitamins E and C,  and beta-carotene, the pre-cursor kind of Vitamin A.

The unfortunate mice in this examine have been given lung cancer and then handled with Vitamin E and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), an antioxidant purported to treat persistent obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Exercise of the p53 gene in the mice decreased as the size, variety and aggressiveness of the lung tumors increased. The researchers employed a method known as “RNA sequencing” to deconstruct the effect of the antioxidants on p53, and concluded that Vitamin E and NAC each contributed to the gene’s ineffectiveness against lung cancer.

What’s even far more troubling is proof from the study suggesting that antioxidants have a stronger effect on p53 early in the tumor development cycle. Quoting from the review: “…antioxidants may accelerate the development of early tumors or precancerous lesions in higher-threat populations such as smokers and individuals with persistent obstructive pulmonary condition who obtain NAC to relieve mucus production.”

As with all animal research, it is essential to note that these results have yet to be studied in healthier human subjects, and there’s nothing in this study suggesting that antioxidant supplementation leads to cancer in humans.

But, at the quite least, the study does raise a red flag about taking massive doses of antioxidant dietary supplements to ward off cancer. And for men and women already in a high-chance group, such as smokers or these with a family members historical past of cancer, this study signifies that sticking with a wholesome diet rich in antioxidant sources (this kind of as blueberries, apples and green tea) and ditching the dietary supplements might not be such a bad notion.

Older cancer patients becoming written off instead of taken care of, says charity

Older cancer individuals are becoming “written off” since of their age, a top charity has warned. Macmillan Cancer Assistance mentioned some sufferers have been getting deemed as as well outdated for remedy and had been not assessed on their total fitness.

Research from the charity and the National Cancer Intelligence Network (NCIN) also found that tens of thousands of pensioners diagnosed with cancer have survived for at least a decade.

The figures showed more than 130,000 men and women in the Uk have survived for at least ten many years soon after currently being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 65 or over. That quantity incorporated more than 8,000 sufferers who had been diagnosed at the age of 80 and in excess of.

But regardless of the huge amount of older people who are “extended-phrase” survivors of the illness, the charity stated numerous individuals in the United kingdom are getting denied remedy simply because they are deemed to be as well old.

It stated that cancer survival rates in this age group are “poor”.

Macmillan pointed out that survival prices in the United kingdom in contrast badly with those on the continent and warned of what it saw as a worrying trend in the way men and women are taken care of.

For many common cancers – which includes prostate, breast, lung, stomach, ovarian and kidney cancers – the United kingdom and Ireland have a decrease 5-year survival rate than the rest of Europe, a spokesman mentioned.

Well being staff must guarantee treatment choices are not based mostly on age alone and ought to also assess a patient’s bodily and psychological properly-becoming, the charity added.

“It truly is wrong to publish off older folks as also outdated for treatment method,” stated Macmillan’s chief executive Ciaran Devane

“With a appropriate evaluation and acceptable therapy, our analysis displays that many older cancer individuals can live for a prolonged time and can even be cured.

“Whilst it’s very good information that so a lot of older people are benefiting from remedy, many thousands a lot more could live longer if our survival prices for in excess of-65s matched these in comparable nations.

“The barriers to getting treatment method – which incorporate age discrimination and inadequate evaluation methods – should be tackled now so more older folks can survive cancer and live for several many years.”

NCIN’s clinical lead Dr Mick Peake extra: “It is vital that all individuals acquire the ideal and most successful remedy primarily based on the nature of their cancer and their fitness for therapy and that chronological age alone is not the deciding factor.

“We know that cancer survival rates in older individuals in many other nations are better than in the United kingdom and guaranteeing optimum treatment at all ages is the way of tackling this issue.”

Dr Mark Porter, chairman of council at the British Health-related Association, said: “It is essential that all healthcare professionals make sure that patients are treated on the basis of their clinical need.

“With an increasingly ageing population, it need to be a crucial part of medical professionalism to ensure that older sufferers are taken care of with the care and respect they deserve.”
