Graphic anti-drinking ad shows how alcohol causes cancer – video

An Australian ad showing alcohol being absorbed into the bloodstream, spreading and causing cancerous cell mutations in the liver, bowel and throat, has been named the world’s most effective at making people reconsider their alcohol intake. Researchers tested 83 English-language alcohol advertisements on 2,174 adults who regularly consume alcohol. According to the Cancer Council of Australia, more than 3,200 cases of cancer could be prevented each year nationally if people limited their alcohol consumption

Smoking causes one in ten deaths globally, major new study reveals

One in 10 deaths around the world is caused by smoking, according to a major new study that shows the tobacco epidemic is far from over and that the threat to lives is spreading across the globe.

There were nearly one billion smokers in 2015, in spite of tobacco control policies having been adopted by many countries. That number is expected to rise as the world’s population expands. One in every four men is a smoker and one in 20 women. Their lives are likely to be cut short – smoking is the second biggest risk factor for early death and disability after high blood pressure.

The researchers found there were 6.4m deaths attributed to smoking in 2015, of which half were in just four populous countries – China, India, USA, and Russia.

Major efforts to control tobacco have paid off, according to the study published by the Lancet medical journal. A World Health Organisation treaty in 2005 ratified by 180 countries recommends measures including smoking bans in public places, high taxes in cigarettes and curbs on advertising and marketing.

Between 1990 and 2015, smoking prevalence dropped from 35% to 25% among men and 8% to 5% among women. High income countries and Latin America – especially Brazil which brought in tough curbs on tobacco – achieved the biggest drops in numbers of smokers.

But many countries have made marginal progress since the treaty was agreed, say the authors of the study from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in the US. And although far more men smoke than women, there have been bigger reductions in the proportions of men smoking also, with minimal changes among women.

Senior author Dr Emmanuela Gakidou said there were 933m daily smokers in 2015, which she called “a very shocking number”. The paper focused only on those who smoke every day. “The toll of tobacco is likely to be much larger if we include occasional smokers and former smokers and people who use other tobacco products like smokeless tobacco. This is on the low end of how important tobacco is,” she told the Guardian.

There is much more that needs to be done, she said. “There is a widespread notion that the war on tobacco has been won but I think our evidence shows that we need renewed and sustained efforts because the toll of smoking in 2015 is much larger than most people would think, so we absolutely have a lot more to do. We need new and improved strategies to do it and a lot of effort and political will.”

Traditionally there have been far fewer women smoking around the world than men, but it was a huge problem for both, she said.

“There are some really worrisome findings – for example in Russia female smoking has increased in the last 25 years significantly. There are also some western European countries where about one in three women are smoking. So it is true globally that a lot fewer women smoke than men but there are some countries where it is a big problem for women,” she said.

Dr Kelly Henning of Bloomberg Philanthropies, which is committed to tobacco control and co-funded the study with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said: “I think the study highlights the fact that the work is not finished on tobacco. The good news is the decline in daily smoking among men and women … however there are still many smokers in the world and there is still a lot of work to do. I think we have to keep our eye on the issue and really do more.”

Countries with some of the highest death tolls such as China and Indonesia “really don’t need those health problems – they have so many other issues they are trying to address. But tobacco control is critically important in those places,” she said.

“China has more than a million deaths a year from smoking related diseases and China is only beginning to see the effects of their high male smoking rate. That is only one instance of what is expected to become an extremely major epidemic,” she said.

Writing in a linked comment, Professor John Britton from the University of Nottingham said: “Responsibility for this global health disaster lies mainly with the transnational tobacco companies, which clearly hold the value of human life in very different regard to most of the rest of humanity.” British American Tobacco, for instance, sold 665bn cigarettes in 2015 and made a £5.2bn profit.

“Today, the smoking epidemic is being exported from the rich world to low-income and middle-income countries, slipping under the radar while apparently more immediate priorities occupy and absorb scarce available human and financial resources,” he writes. “The epidemic of tobacco deaths will progress inexorably throughout the world until and unless tobacco control is recognised as an immediate priority for development, investment, and research.”

Yeast Infection: Description, Causes and Treatment

What is Yeast Infection?

This kind of infection is most common among women. However, many remain ignorant or unaware of this medical problem. It is important to know the symptoms, dangers, and related conditions of yeast infection to be able to treat it early on. It is also necessary to determine the various causes of this disease to be able to avoid it before it even happens. Finally, it will be most helpful for any female person if she is also knowledgeable of the several possible treatments for yeast infection to be able to curtail it immediately.

Not many women are familiar with the term “yeast infection”. However, more women are probably aware of or have experienced previously the symptoms of this condition. The top three signs of having yeast infection are itching, burning and pain, and discharge (1). Itching of any part of the skin or body is usually caused by an infestation of foreign organisms such as fungi or bacteria in a particular area of the body. In the case of yeast infection, the affected portion is the vaginal part and the surrounding areas. The infection can cause intense itching that rashes or redness usually develop secondary to scratching. Another indication is a burning or painful sensation in that area especially when urinating. The skin in a woman’s vaginal part may already contain sores due to frequent scratching that when placed in contact with the acidity of urine may cause pain or a burning sensation. This feeling may be similar to that which is experienced when having urinary tract infection, however, they occur in different areas of the body. Lastly, some women report of having discharges that are usually described as odorless, white, and cheese-like. At other instances, a starch-like odor is said to be observed from the discharges.

Yeast infection itself is not considered as highly dangerous, however, it can be very irritating and disturbing especially among women who are already preoccupied with other responsibilities or tasks. On the other hand, like most infections, it is highly transferable to other individuals including the opposite sex. Certain conditions of the body may make it easier for a person to acquire this disease such as diabetes and use of antibiotics.

What causes Yeast Infection?

The scientific term for yeast infection is Candidiasis (2). This was derived from the yeast organism or fungus-like Candida that causes this condition. Fungus thrives in dark and moist areas such as the vaginal area of women. Certain health conditions such as pregnancy and diabetes make people, especially women, more prone to acquiring yeast infection. Pregnancy causes a change in the metabolic balance and vaginal acidity of women which is more favorable to fungus growth. Fungus are also known to thrive among individuals with high sugar levels such as in the case of people with diabetes and those with defects in sugar metabolism.

What are the treatments for Yeast Infection?

Medical doctors prescribe various oral medications such as Diflucan or fluconazole and topical treatments to cure yeast infection. But from experience, this suggestion never works as it does not address the cause of the infection. Additionally, the yeast becomes resistant to those drugs over time making the problem even worst (3). The key is to boost your immune system to handle the yeast overgrowth. One the ways we do it in the office is helping your body to get rid of the mercury present in the GI tract (4). Candida thrive in an environment consisting of sugar and toxins like mercury. Addressing these two points is critical to eliminate Candida once and for all. Too often, I see people coming in and tell me that they have tried everything to kill Candida in their body, but they never address the source of toxicity. In addition, when we kill Candida, mercury is being release in the blood stream, causing what people claim as being “die off”. Unfortunately, this newly released mercury is not being eliminated and accumulated in other parts of the body causing more issues. As you can see, doing a Candida cleanse is not that simple. Several factors must be addressed at the same for an efficient and complete elimination of Candida. This is performed by using herbs like garlic, pau d’arco, calendula, among others.

Sleep Disorders: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments

Sleep is a vital part of our physical and mental well-being but unfortunately, thousands of people suffer from a variety of sleep disorders.  Some can be very mild and barely noticed by the effected person such as snoring or grinding of the teeth while asleep.  Others can be much more severe and even dangerous such as the type of sleep disorders that interfere with breathing or that cause a person to fall asleep at random times beyond their control.

Symptoms:

Disorder sleep symptoms can range from small, minor symptoms to much more severe and troublesome.  Here is a list of some of the more common sleep disorders and their symptoms.

Restless Leg Syndrome: As the name suggests this disorder is characterized by involuntary jerky leg movements that can make falling asleep difficult.

Bruxism: This disorder involves a clenching of the jaw or grinding your teeth while you are asleep and is often not noticed by the person suffering from the disorder

Sleepwalking: Perhaps one of the most well-known sleep disorders, this disorder sleep symptom involves walking or performing other routine activities such as getting dressed or making breakfast while in a sleep state.  Again, the sleepwalker is unaware of their actions.

Narcolepsy: One of the more serious and dangerous of the sleep disorders; those who suffer from Narcolepsy may fall asleep while performing regular activities such as talking or driving.  It is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to sleep regardless of how much rest you may have gotten the night before.

Insomnia: Restlessness or an inability to fall asleep.  This can be mild and occasional or severe and reoccurring.

Sleep Apnea:  This is one of the other more worrisome of the sleep disorders.  This disorder’s sleep symptom can be somewhat frightening since it involves a pause or a stop in breathing while asleep.

These are but just a handful of the some of the more widely known sleep disorders; however, there are dozens of others that you may want to learn about.

Causes:

Sleep disorders stem from a variety of causes including physical pain such as back pain, pain from a recent injury, neck pain, and headaches.  Stress and anxiety can also be leading causes of sleep disorders.  Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, the onset of menopause, or menstruation can also be factors that interfere with normal sleep.  The side effects of various medications can lead to sleep disorders as can some medical conditions such as sciatica and endocrine imbalances.  Environmental noise and distractions can also be culprits in stealing your sleep.

Treatments:

Sleep disorders have a variety of treatments from using aromatherapy oils blended to aid sleep, for example by using one of the sleep mists that you can spray your linens with before you go to bed to help you relax.  A variety of herbal remedies using chamomile and other herbs can be effective.  When stress and anxiety are causing the disorder’s sleep symptom, learning relaxation and stress management techniques can often have a great effect on your ability to get much needed sleep.  Some disorders are more severe and may require medication and treatment by a physician.  So if you feel that you are suffering from a sleep disorder and one of the standard remedies do not seem to help, consult your healthcare provider.

5 Causes of Hives You Wouldn't Expect

Breaking out in hives is the worst: your skin itches all over, you’re covered in unsightly red welts, and, as if that weren’t bad enough, it’s not always clear what might have triggered them.

What we do know: hives, also known as urticaria, can appear anywhere on the body, including your face, torso, arms, legs, and even inside your mouth and ears. They may range in size from as tiny as a pencil tip to as large as a dinner plate. Hives typically crop up when you have an allergic reaction to a substance—pet dander, pollen, latex—triggering your body to release histamine and other chemicals into your blood. That’s what causes the itching, swelling, and other symptoms.

Whether someone falls into the category of acute hives (lasting six weeks or less) or chronic hives (more than six weeks), there are a few concrete causes of those pesky red bumps:

Your diet

If you tend to break out in hives after eating shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, and berries, then you may have a food allergy, says Debra Jaliman, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist and the author of Skin Rules.

For some, the culprit is obvious—they’ll eat a peanut butter cookie, for example, and immediately break out in a rash. For others, it’s not so cut and dry; symptoms can take several hours to develop. Either way, make an appointment with your doctor if you suspect you have a food allergy. Dr. Jaliman says you’ll likely be put on an elimination diet where you reintroduce one potentially triggering food every week. “Let’s say you’re not eating any of the hives foods and then you add back shellfish and you get the hives again. Then you can pretty much figure it out,” Dr. Jaliman says. After you determine the culprit, nix it from your diet to prevent mild symptoms from becoming chronic. Dr. Jaliman says you’ll likely be prescribed an EpiPen—if you accidentally ingest a trigger food, you could get hives in your throat, which can be dangerous.

The great outdoors

Insect bites and exposure to pollen can make you break out in hives, but you probably already knew that. What you may not have realized is that direct sunlight, cold temperatures, or strong winds can also bring on hives. And no, this doesn’t mean you’re allergic to the elements. “It’s really more that your skin is very sensitive,” says Marilyn Li, MD, a Los Angeles-based allergist and immunologist.

RELATED: 22 Strange Ways the Sun May Affect Your Body

While avoiding these triggers could prevent hives from returning, Dr. Li says your doctor may be able to provide an antihistamine that could solve a weather- or temperature-based problem. That way, you can enjoy a hike on a sunny summer day or hold a cold can of beer on the weekend without worrying about a potential hives outbreak.

An underlying illness

Chronic hives can be a telltale sign of a larger problem, and extensive blood work may be necessary to pinpoint the underlying issue. Dr. Jaliman says patients with lupus, lymphoma, thyroid disease, hepatitis, or HIV may have hives as a symptom of their illness. Since these people tend to suffer from chronic hives, medications are the most reliable form of relief.

If you’ve contracted a virus, that could be a cause for hives as well. Dr. Li says hives caused by viruses typically last for six weeks, so if your rash persists for longer, see an allergist to determine another possible cause.

RELATED: 19 Signs Your Thyroid Isn’t Working Right

Your daily sweat session

While your morning jog or post-work weightlifting regimen can boost endorphins, your daily dose of exercise could also be causing you to break out in hives. Why? According to Dr. Jaliman, the body produces acetylcholine, a chemical that can inhibit cell breakdown, as a response to exercise. For some people, the acetylcholine will disrupt skin cells, thus irritating the skin and creating a rash the same way histamine does.

Dr. Li says sweating can also signal a breakout for those prone to hives. The sweat itself doesn’t cause hives, but indicates your body heat rising. For some, excess warmth on the skin, from a workout or other body-heat inducing activity, is enough to produce hives. “Even taking a hot shower makes them break out,” Dr. Li says.

Emotionally charged situations

Intense emotional responses can trigger a hives outbreak. For those with chronic hives, or hives that persist for more than six weeks at a time, stress and anger can heat up the body and cause it to release histamine.

“I’ve seen kids break out in hives from having a temper tantrum,” Dr. Li says. “Certainly, stress that’s anxiety-related can cause more itching in patients who have hives and they start to have more hives as a result of itching and scratching the existing ones.”

For those with chronic hives from heat-induced or illness-induced activities, Dr. Li suggests visiting a doctor to pinpoint the symptoms and receive an antihistamine prescription. “The solutions are individualized and many times may involve just taking a little more medication,” she says.

BPH (Enlarged Prostate) Causes, Symptoms And Treatments

The Facts
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) occurs when the prostate, which is ordinarily around the same size as a walnut and weighs about 30 to 50 grams, expands to twice or even three times its regular size.
As the name indicates, BPH is not indicative of serious diseases like cancer or other malignancies, though it can cause some discomforts as will be explained below.
Hyperplasia is the technical term for the nature of the growth itself, which in the case of BPH is caused either by an increased number of cells growing within the prostate, or by a reduction in the number of prostate cells that are dying off.
Another, similar condition is Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, which shares common facets with BPH, but differs in that the hypertrophic growth is caused by the increased size of the cells themselves rather than a growth in their actual number.

How is BPH Caused?
There is no concrete evidence for any one cause of BPH, but medical sources are agreed that the condition is most likely linked to aging and the impact that the production of testosterone has on older men. Some studies have indicated that the body’s system for working off testosterone slows in middle age and the body’s reaction is to use this extra testosterone for the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is associated with prostate growth when it is present in large amounts. Family history and ethnicity should also be taken into account, with men of European ancestry at slightly increased risk of developing the condition, particularly those from southern Europe.
Still other studies have drawn a connection between BPH and lifestyle factors like high cholesterol, excessive weight, poor diet, and immoderate alcohol consumption.
Those with conditions such as diabetes, a lowered immune system, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerosis should also practice caution and remain vigilant for the development of BPH symptoms.

Symptoms to Watch Out For
The symptoms of BPH are varied and can occur in a range of varieties and combinations. Unfortunately each case of BPH is different and the symptoms can encompass levels from very mild to severe depending on the patient.
Most commonly, BPH will manifest itself with problems during and after urination. This is due to the enlarged prostate pressing down on the urinary tract and inhibiting the urine flow. Patients report needing to urinate more frequently, as well as a feeling that the bladder was not completely emptied on completion. Other symptoms include dribbling, and a decrease in the flow and weakening of the urine stream. Patients may also have to use more effort to begin urinating and then “push” with more force than was previously necessary. In some instances, blood will also appear in the urine, caused by the rupturing of blood vessels and small veins in the bladder as the patient strains.
In more severe cases, complications like urinary tract infections (UTI’s), bladder infections, and bladder stones may develop due to the bladder obstructions caused by BPH.
There is some evidence for a link between erectile dysfunction (ED) and BPH, although the consensus among medical professionals in this area is far from united on the topic. Studies have shown that some treatments for BPH could actually cause erectile dysfunction in the prescribed patient, and there are also some recorded cases where an ED medication has actually aided in reducing BPH.

Testing and Diagnosis
On presentation of symptoms, doctors will perform a thorough physical examination, in addition to consulting the patient of their medical and familial history. The patient’s lifestyle will also be taken into account with issues like mobility and diet being given particular precedence. The physical exam will most likely include a digital rectal examination, the simplest and most effective procedure for detecting abnormalities like BPH in the prostate, as well as in the early detection of prostate cancer.
Doctors will often order a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test to ascertain the level of antigens in the bloodstream, a higher rate of which results from growth in the size of the prostate, though the origin of these increased PSA’s is not always Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
Other tests that the doctor might order or carry out in surgery are the “long and strong” test, a precise analysis of the strength and flow of the urine stream; a filling cystometry, a measurement of the time it takes to fill the bladder; and an ultrasound or other imaging test. A cystoscopy, the visual inspection of the prostate through a thin lighted tube inserted into the urethra of the penis, is also used, though less often.
It should be noted that the symptoms of BPH, especially in its early stages, are very often so mild that the condition goes undetected until found during routine physical examinations – a further motivating factor in arranging regular medical check-ups, particularly for men over the age of 35.

Treatments
Medication – Alpha blockers are often prescribed for men who are undergoing a large amount of discomfort due to BPH. Essentially, these blockers help ease the urine flow by relaxing the bladder and the muscles of the prostate. Unfortunately, the side effects of these drugs can include headaches, nasal congestion, fatigue, and dizziness, and cases of retrograde ejaculation (where semen goes back into the bladder rather than through the urethra) have also been reported. A lowered libido and even erectile dysfunction have also been noted after patients after patients began a course of alpha blockers, though they are reasonably rare.

5-Alpha-Reductbase Inhibitors are another possibility, as they act to reduce the amount of DHT produced and so will, over the course of 5 or 6 months, reduce the size of the prostate by anywhere up to one fifth (20%). Unlike the alpha blockers, they will address the cause of discomfort over this period, but they will not reduce BPH symptoms in the short term. They are also known to reduce libido and sexual performance in some cases.

Surgery – Non-invasive surgeries such as a transurethral balloon dilation or a transurethral needle ablation have been shown to be very effective in the treatment of BPH, as has transurethral microwave thermotherapy. There is also a variety of laser treatments available.
More invasive procedures are the transurethral resection or incision of the prostate, or the transurethral vaporization of the prostate. In some cases the insertion of a stent may be necessary, or more rarely, the removal of the prostate itself.

Natural Prevention
It is therefore certainly best to try, in so far as possible, to prevent the onset of BPH by avoiding the less healthy lifestyle choices. Ketogenic / Paleo diet and a moderate amount of aerobic exercise (like walking and resistance training) will dramatically reduce the chances of developing BPH, along with improving quality of life overall.
Increasing intake of Ketogenic / Paleo friendly foods that are low in carbs, high in protein and healthy oily fats are great for the prostate and the body as a whole, and the knock on effect is that they elevate mood and the production of disease-fighting enzymes throughout the body. These could range from leafy greens like spinach, to avocados, macadamia nuts, and even grass-fed meats like beef, lamb, and venison. Reducing alcohol consumption and increasing the amount of prostate friendly green tea taken will also limit the chances of developing BPH, as will drinking more water through the day, but limiting intake close to bedtime.

A natural approach to prevention is always a more viable and safer alternative to pharmaceutical drugs  or invasive procedures with harmful side effects. So if you suffer from BPH symptoms or would like to prevent them, you deserve to know about the harmful side effects of drugs like Flomax. Five causes why I enjoy the NHS

Premature baby

Labour’s summer season push to highlight the anniversary of the basis of the NHS (by means of imaginative online campaigning such as “infant amount calculator”), and the risk it faces from a 2nd term of coalition government, got me considering about what the NHS implies to me. Here are five factors why I adore the NHS.

1. It saved my lifestyle – twice. After when I was a premature little one in 1972, and then yet again when I was hit by a existence-threatening illness in 2009. I was unlucky enough to get POEMS Syndrome. Brought on by a bone marrow tumour placing antibodies into my blood, it attacked my nervous system to the extent that I couldn’t stand unaided or use my fingers effectively, and I was hospitalised for five months. The signs are something like MS but quicker progressing. Thankfully, the NHS was in a position to diagnose it (although this took a lengthy time), save my existence and throw the signs gradually into reverse by treating me with radiotherapy. If you are genuinely sick like this the NHS is a world class support. The degree of care I received from NHS staff was amazing – I was terrified and rather much helpless (I could feed myself but not dress myself at my weakest), and nurses and care assistants ensured I kept my dignity and some sort of high quality of lifestyle even at the worst points. They are undertaking a tough, physically demanding occupation dealing with some rather unpleasant tasks, but virtually all of them do it with persistence and individual kindness. I felt like I was picked up by a enormous but human organisation and wrapped in its collective arms until finally they fixed me. When you are desperately ill, being aware of there are dozens and dozens of men and women – from professors of neurology to cleaners and ambulance drivers – all trying to help you is an amazing source of reassurance.

2. Then it taught me to walk again. This took almost a 12 months – the very first two months in a residential rehabilitation ward, and then a lot of a lot more months of outpatient visits and house visits from regional physiotherapists. Thanks to their persistence I went from becoming a wheelchair user who was told I may well never ever stroll once again, to a fairly paced leader of voter ID teams (with a walking stick and ankle splints). The NHS isn’t just about acute care, it is about a entire selection of much less glamorous services designed to cease individuals obtaining ill, get them greater when they do, and assist them handle persistent conditions.

three. This huge array of companies represents great value for money. We provide a overall health services for every citizen who demands it, free of charge at the point of use, for £1,989 ($ three,405) per capita, compared to $ 8,508 per capita at Getting Energy Parity for the USA’s personal healthcare technique. The US program leaves a good deal of people not receiving the ideal care due to the fact 44 million of them are uninsured and 38 million are inadequately insured – somebody with my condition in the US may well place off going to hospital, hoping they would get far better simply because they were concerned about the expense of care, right up until a good deal of irreparable nerve injury had been done. Lack of wellness insurance coverage is estimated to cause 45,000 preventable deaths in the USA every 12 months. There will even now be an estimated 26 million uninsured US residents after the roll-out of the Obamacare programme is completed in 2019.

four. The NHS aids unite the nation. In an more and more fragmented society, there are very couple of institutions that are universal and are practically universally appreciated and supported. Possibly the BBC and the Armed Forces, but both have their critics. The NHS is the standout example of something about the United kingdom almost everybody celebrates. Nearly every person will also use it at some level, as individuals who queue leap by going personal will usually find themselves back in an NHS hospital if they are acutely sick simply because private ones never give the full spectrum of providers.

5. The NHS represents socialist values in operation. There is a excellent cause why rightwing US politicians refer pejoratively to “socialised medication” – due to the fact that is what it is, universal healthcare presented by society primarily based on need to have, not the industry. I don’t believe I’ve quoted Karl Marx’s Critique of the Gotha Programme in a recent column, but the NHS genuinely does embody the concept of “from every single according to their capability, to every according to their requirements”. The truth it works effectively sends a strong signal that we ought to not assume the market offers the greatest solution to each other need facing society both.

The NHS is not ideal. Following I was sick, I spent 4 years scrutinising neighborhood well being solutions in Hackney as chair of the council’s wellness scrutiny commission. We found loads of factors that could be enhanced and saw lots of harm currently being accomplished by the paying crunch and the needless and costly reorganisation brought in by the coalition.

But for an idea that was just a dream for the pre-war generation, and was brought into actuality by a Labour government 66 years ago, against hefty British Health-related Association and Tory opposition, it is something really extraordinary that has had a transformative impact on hundreds of thousands of lives.

If future Labour governments can generate a legacy half as impressive as the NHS, and at the same time sustain our greatest achievement, we ought to be extremely proud.

Fire-fighters strike causes toast ban at hospital

Toast was taken off the breakfast menu for hospital sufferers as a sudden consequence of final week’s fire-fighter strike.

Managers at one,000-bed University Hospital of North Staffordshire determined to switch off toasters in every single kitchen ward – for worry of triggering a fire alarm – throughout the 24-hour walkout.

Individuals had been forced to opt for cereal, porridge, or basically go with out, even though the fire service ran a lowered services as a result of a dispute in excess of pensions.

Antony Wood, who was currently being cared for on the hospital’s cardiac ward, was denied his favourite-toast and-marmalade by personnel, who said toasters were not getting utilised on ‘health and safety’ grounds.

A spokesman for the hospital explained that its fire safety manager had made the decision to switch off the toasters as a precaution in the course of the strike.

He added: “The Trust takes a selection of actions throughout the days when FBU industrial action is taking area to decrease instantly produced fire alarms.”

11 Intriguing Causes To Give Talk Treatment A Try out

Some people are beneath the misapprehension that treatment is for wusses. This couldn’t be even more from the reality. As Richard Taite, founder of Cliffside Malibu and large proponent of habits change, told me earlier this 12 months, “Not only do successful people not worry treatment, they embrace it…. Psychotherapy is a device that produces achievement. Wise folks use it.” And therapy is not just some thing that sensible individuals use, it’s something that most everyone must most likely consider for the duration of at least some point in their lives.

Here’s why: Several of us grew up beneath the impression that internal things shouldn’t be talked about – it must be swept beneath the rug. This is maybe the single worst point you can do for your self. Stamping down your feelings and not working by way of your psychological concerns – specifically severe discomfort or abuse in the previous – can culminate in a host of problems. If you need a numbers-based mostly reason to persuade you, depression alone is a major player in the international burden of disease, the leading result in of disability throughout the world, and responsible for billions of bucks a year in misplaced function.

To talk about the positive aspects of therapy, I spoke with Marian Margulies, PhD, a psychologist in New York City and candidate in psychoanalysis at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education at the NYU Medical Center. The attractiveness of “talk treatment,” particularly forms like psychodynamic and cognitive conduct therapy, is that it addresses not just the signs but also the causes of one’s difficulties. Antidepressants, though important for some men and women, don’t exactly get to the underlying source. “If you’re not obtaining to the cause of the soreness,” says Margulies, “you’re essentially chained to the previous. Psychotherapy will get to the root.”

1. Therapy’s results persist in excess of the prolonged-haul

A massive advantage of talk therapy is that its results are lengthy-lasting. This is since you’re not only operating via stuff, but you’re also building the resources to assist you deal with potential stuff. “Psychodynamic treatment is tough over the many years,” says Margulies. “The good gains carry on and develop more than time as though some of the perform gets additional consolidated after therapy stops. This makes sense to me simply because it suggests that we carry on to use the reflective lens in contemplating about, talking about and expressing feelings about our inner lives soon after we finish remedy. The whole talking-with-the-therapist process gets internalized so that self-therapy picks up exactly where the real treatment leaves off.” Though medication may be essential for some, it does run the threat of relapse soon after it’s discontinued. The “getting-to-the-cause” element of therapy is a large purpose why antidepressants and treatment with each other are believed to be most powerful.

two. Bodily signs and symptoms get treated, also

Psychological trauma, or even common ennui, can set off physical signs and symptoms – and depression and nervousness are properly known to have considerable, and occasionally debilitating, physical effects. Going to treatment, assuming it’s successful, can support these issues fade away. “There have been some research that display that many bodily ailments are ameliorated when a person engages in treatment,” says Margulies. “When individuals do not express feelings but swallow them and hold them buried and out of aware awareness, one’s body frequently reacts. It acts as a barometer that reads: danger! Something is amiss and demands focus. Somatizing by means of abdomen aches, headaches, sleeping problems, and ulcers are just some of the techniques our entire body reacts to stress and psychic pain.”

3. Repressed emotions will come back to haunt you later on on

The most significant disadvantage of not speaking about things could be that unexpressed feelings and traumas can pile up and explode later on. “Lots of individuals stay away from talking about their emotions about a entire host of issues,” says Margulies. “But repressing or damping down one’s emotions doesn’t make the emotions go away. If anything, they linger and fester, only to explode when a benign comment is produced.” Even if you really do not have a complete-on breakdown later on, not fully processing occasions and emotions frequently generates damaging believed patterns that can inform every single location in your daily life – your relationships with your partner, parents, youngsters, coworkers, and even oneself. So learning how to method them can alter how you maneuver in many diverse approaches.

four. And the passive-aggressive shtick will fade away

When you function by means of ancient (or current) anger, it really gets processed so that it no longer has to seep out passive-aggressively. “Angry feelings are typically expressed in a passive aggressive manner rather than a far more direct and much less aggressive manner,” says Margulies. “Someone who feels slighted may well make a sarcastic remark in return, or not show up at an agreed upon time, ‘forgetting’ the appointment.” So get rid of the passive-aggressive type of expression – your loved ones will thank you.

5. It will give you a complete new viewpoint on other folks, also

An awesome advantage of treatment is that it not only aids you recognize yourself much better but it aids you comprehend other people. When we hold negative ideas in with out processing them, they grow to be ingrained so that we see the planet through that lens – and we make tons of assumptions that may or may possibly not be true. “In my function with individuals in psychoanalytically oriented treatment,” says Margulies, “they come to see how they typically make assumptions about what the other particular person meant. Then when they actually do a reality verify by asking a pal what they were considering when they stated, they are often stunned to hear they had a absolutely various consider.” With out the clutter of your very own (typically mistaken) assumptions, it is a lot less difficult to realize others’ intentions and motivations.

six. It helps you deal with future curve balls

Considering that massive and small problems are going to come up from time to time, realizing how to deal with them in a healthier way is an important skill. “Conflict is a element of each day life,” says Margulies. “It’s useful to be mindful of one’s emotions close to conflict. If, for instance, you are angry with your boss who is piling up perform for you when you are acquiring prepared to go away, you are bound to come to feel resentment and conflict. By reflecting on what’s going on outside (your boss’ demands) and inside (your mounting anger, irritation, and worry of dropping your task if you say ‘no’), you are in a better place to resolve the conflict. Talking items through with an individual and reflecting on what emotions are evoked, and why, prospects to a higher knowing of oneself. Then one is freer to think of ways to respond in a a lot more proactive way.” Finding out how not to get swallowed up by events, but alternatively how to form a game program to deal with them, is the important (and it will take a whole lot of practice).

7. Speaking about things gives them form

Have you ever noticed how turning a dilemma all around and close to in your head often will get you precisely nowhere? It is so effortless to come to feel dwarfed by a difficulty when it is just an amorphous blob in your head – but talking about it offers it a starting, middle, and end. And that assists you wrap your brain all around it. “When I consider of the approach of engaging in speak therapy, I believe of the analogy with writing,” says Margulies. “The a lot more you create, the more you know what you are making an attempt to say – it clarifies your thinking. Similarly with speaking and with speak treatment, a single becomes far more mindful of what is producing one particular feel anxious, sad, angry or frustrated. And then one is freer to choose how to control these emotions or get action to alleviate them.”

Even if you can not get to therapy, just speaking about a problem with a friend can be beneficial: Lay it out the concern, and it will turn into clearer, far more logical, and consequently much more manageable.

8. You know you are not alone

Seeing a psychologist can be a large relief in-and-of itself because you know you are taking action against what ails you. It also comforting just being aware of that you have a created-in assistance construction that you can go to once a week. And, if you are so inclined, joining a help group for folks grappling with equivalent issues as you – say, divorce – can be really beneficial. “If a single, for instance, is newly divorced and feeling unhappy and lonely, then joining a support group may well help alleviate some of the unpleasant emotions.” Not that misery loves organization, but it is true that currently being with folks who are dealing with comparable troubles can be extremely reassuring.

9. It will rewire your brain

One particular of the coolest items about therapy is that it can deliver about modify at the degree of the brain. We consider of medicine as shifting the depressed brain, but there’s quite compelling proof that speak therapy does the very same. With brain imaging techniques, psychotherapy has been proven to alter exercise in the medial prefrontal cortex, the anterior cingulate cortex, the hippocampus, and the amygdala. These areas are concerned in self-referential ideas (“me”-centered worry thoughts), executive management, emotion, and dread. (For some intriguing analysis and critiques, see right here, here, and right here.)

One particular quite successful technique, cognitive habits treatment (CBT), aids people determine the negative believed patterns they fall back on habitually – which are no doubt wired into the brain like deep ruts – and replace them with new and more positive mental routines. In addition to assisting folks fewer signs and symptoms of depression and anxiousness, it, as well, would seem to deliver about brain modifications that are measurable.

10. You won’t have to self-medicate any longer

Self-medicating to “deal” with psychological things is extremely common. But it does not do anything to really address what’s going on – it just masks it. It also produces an addictive cycle, which might exacerbate the real issue. Receiving to the root of your previous stuff in treatment will, with time, obviate the need to self-medicate. When you’re no longer living by the unfavorable things in your past, the need to avoid them – and by yourself – will disappear.

11. It allows you to teach the next generation a better way

The best point about dealing with your own things is that, if you have little ones, it aids you educate them a much better way. For those who grew up in households in which stuff just wasn’t talked about, search how many decades later on we’re nonetheless dealing with the fallout of that method. “Parents can help their young children understand a vocabulary of emotions early on by modeling it themselves,” says Margulies. “This provides children the feeling that it is not only okay but wholesome to express themselves by way of all the colors of their emotions. That it is essential to express anger when they really feel they’ve been ignored or unfairly treated or when someone says anything hurtful. The option is to repress the feeling, feel resentful, possibly act out one’s anger in defiant conduct. The time to begin talking about feelings is as early as possible.”

*  *  *

People are beginning open up far more about their private struggles and psychological health troubles. The stigma would seem would seem to be fading, if gradually. If you really feel therapy would advantage you, go for it. And if you can’t, speak with friends – they will be grateful you opened up and it may give them the green light to do the exact same. Chances are it will aid kick off some important dialogues.

Complex causes of little one psychological unwell overall health | @guardianletters

Madeleine Bunting makes some essential points (Our kids truly are facing a psychological overall health crisis, 21 Might). 1 of the most crucial factors is that young children and young folks are vulnerable. They are topic to a lot of pressures and opportunities. However, it is also important not to leap to straightforward conclusions about causes of apparent distress. To do so risks premature and potentially inappropriate labels. 1 of the symptoms of this may be noticed in the way that young people’s expression of their issues is occasionally medicalised. The practice of educational psychologists working inside communities and schools aims to aid colleagues disentangle anxieties and discover answers that do not more disadvantage youngsters via separation, labelling or mistreatment. Bunting says we are “raising young children who are ill”. By providing an inappropriate setting, anyone’s overall health may possibly be jeopardised. • Thank you for coverage of the troubling rise in demand for children and younger people’s psychological health solutions. Madeleine Bunting says young people’s psychological overall health ought to be the subject of crisis seminars at government level. But it is not. And that is simply because psychological sickness remains unpopular and numerous desire to blame beleaguered employees for failing kids than face actuality. Referral costs are growing at all around ten% a 12 months to the kids and younger people’s companies my believe in provides in Kent, Medway, East Sussex, Brighton and Hove, West Sussex and Hampshire. Comparable increases are reported across the country. Demand is outstripping supply and the complexity of three sets of commissioners – regional authorities, clinical commissioning groups and NHS England – does not support. Several places have witnessed cuts to help and expert services. This is not function for the faint-hearted, but staff are deeply anxious. Most adults with drug or alcohol problems, key mental illnesses and/or in prison have expertise of trauma and psychological distress in childhood. It does not get a genius to function out that lack of investment in companies for young children and young individuals, and in research to aid us understand why we are seeing this unprecedented rise in demand, is storing up problems we will reside to regret. It is not tough to give wonderful care. We have outstanding models and strategies, and due to the fact young people are so resilient, we get speedy, life-changing results. What could matter more?

Existence coach: what causes water retention?

There is fairly a wide variation of normal but the medical doctor is looking to assess if the tendon reflex is unusually brisk, average, lowered or absent.

For illustration, a person who has a bulging or “slipped” disc in the decrease back might show diminished or absent knee jerks since the nerves controlling knee lifting are getting squeezed by the disc and this stops the reflex working.

A fluid scenario

Q: What triggers water retention, and what’s the ideal way to tackle it? Although I swim and do yoga every single week, I often look to get puffy about my thighs and ankles – one thing that a masseur lately confirmed.

A: Tony Gallagher writes

You will almost certainly be not also stunned to know that there are numerous motives that can contribute to fluid retention in the entire body which is far better acknowledged as oedema. The develop-up of fluid leads to impacted tissue to turn out to be swollen.

Exercises such as swimming and yoga certainly will not make the swelling any worse, but prior to effective remedy can commence, the underlying trigger should be located. The oedema usually clears up when this underlying problem creating the fluid imbalance is diagnosed and taken care of.

Whilst oedema can happen anyplace in the body it is most typical in the feet and ankles and this is labelled peripheral oedema.

Getting immobile for lengthy intervals can be a contributing factor at the begin. Other culprits include sizzling weather and being exposed to high altitudes. A large salt consumption can also produce difficulties and females at times have troubles with hormones linked with the menstrual cycle when they may knowledge oedema in the two weeks prior to menstruation.

Symptoms contain swelling of physique components this kind of as feet, hands and ankles, a feeling of stiffness or aching and bodyweight fluctuations.

Oral contraceptives that incorporate oestrogen can set off fluid retention, as can hormones found in pregnancy that inspire the body to hold onto extra fluid. Specific medication, this kind of as corticosteroids or medication for higher blood strain can result in difficulties too.

Dietary deficiencies (see Sara’s response for much more detail, correct) can be a contributor so analysis of diet plan may possibly be helpful. Consuming a lot of water helps because a effectively-hydrated entire body is much less most likely to retain fluid.

In some situations fluid retention could be a indicator of disease. If diagnostic tests are deemed necessary, they may incorporate testing for some of the following: kidney illness heart ailment, since, if the heart doesn’t pump effectively, the physique can compensate in a variety of approaches like retaining fluid.

Other prospective situations are lung conditions, thyroid condition and arthritis, as joints affected in specified cases tend to swell with fluid. Liver disease and malignant lymphoedema that block structures of the lymphatic method can result in swelling. Oedema that happens in the leg may be caused by a blood clot, a development or a cyst or varicose veins.

In the initial instance, you could lose bodyweight if required, continue with your regular exercising, elevate your legs in bed every day to improve your circulation and, if pertinent, stay away from standing for extended intervals of time. Sporting assistance stockings normally assists too. If issues persist you may need to have further diagnostic exams.

A: Sara Stanner writes

Water retention can be caused by certain health-related circumstances or the body’s all-natural reaction to hot weather, hormonal changes in the course of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy or the menopause. When you are struggling, some dietary adjustments can support.

Firstly, cut back on the salt in your diet regime and attempt to consume meals that are good sources of potassium this kind of as fruit (particularly bananas), vegetables, meat, fish, shellfish, milk and milk goods, nuts, seeds and pulses.

The fluid regulating action of the kidneys is based on the dual pumping action of sodium and potassium – sodium draws water into the entire body although potassium assists to excrete it. So do not add further salt at the table or in cooking, stay away from eating also a lot of higher-salt food items this kind of as soy sauce, stock cubes, salted meats and fish, gravy powders, food items canned in brine and salted snacks this kind of as salted nuts or popcorn. Verify meals labels to seem for decrease salt options. Even though meals producers have accomplished a good deal in recent many years to minimize the salt content of many processed meals, there can nevertheless be a variation between kinds and brands.

Make sure that you drink loads of water. While it could be tempting to drink less when you are suffering from fluid retention, a lower fluid intake causes you to retain fluid whereas maintaining effectively hydrated promotes good kidney function.

Drinking tons of alcohol or also a lot of caffeinated drinks could lead to dehydration and cause fluid retention. Even though there numerous herbal and dietary dietary supplements, for instance containing dandelion, ginger and nettle which have been traditionally used as therapies for water retention, check with your GP before taking these.

Placing your feet up at normal intervals all through the day and frequently rotating your ankles can help fluid construct-up in the legs. But physical exercise can also support – just making sure you are walking all around every single hour or so will minimize the fluid retention that can arise when you sit for extended intervals of time.

Health-related v fiscal causes for Papworth"s move | @guardianletters

Aneurin Bevan at Papworth hospital

The Treasury’s suggestion that Papworth hospital should be relocated and joined with the loss-generating Peterborough and Stamford NHS Foundation Trust is deeply disturbing and clearly primarily based on fiscal aspirations rather than sound health care considerations (Report, 15 February). When I was appointed consultant cardiothoracic surgeon to Papworth 42 many years in the past, I was informed by the regional medical officer that we’d be moved to the Addenbrooke’s web site inside 4 many years. Events conspired towards this. Nonetheless, after my retirement I served as a non-executive on the Papworth board and, following lengthy discussions with Addenbrooke’s, it was unanimously agreed that we ought to move to its internet site in Cambridge. There we would have our very own constructing and retain our very own management and identity as a separate trust, but would share some expensive solutions that would be employed by the two hospitals.

Our cause for wanting to continue to be independent was since of our success. We had excellent management and, becoming a single-specialty hospital, were capable to target effectively on treating sufferers with heart and lung ailment with no currently being subjected to the demands and pressures of becoming component of a big basic hospital. We had been in agreement that each hospitals would advantage from the proximity of our respective clinical services and, for Papworth, the presence of planet-class analysis-based organisations and the health-related college on the identical campus have been additional points of interest. This still has to be the greatest alternative for the individuals of East Anglia and for these who attend our supra-regional services from more afield. It is intolerable that this should be put at risk by this late intervention from the Treasury.
Terence English
Oxford

• The real iniquity linked with the Papworth hospital PFI bid is not with Mr Osborne’s choice to reject it but the rush to PFI by successive governments, saddling the nation with massive debt. The NHS is a publicly funded physique, bound by statute to provide healthcare free at the stage of delivery from taxpayer’s money. Implicit within this need to be the provision of hospitals and services for the delivery of that care. Alternatively of wasting vast quantities of funds on foreign expeditions, our politicians ought to be prioritising care for our very own population very first. This ought to consist of the developing of modern day hospitals for the delivery of state-of-the art healthcare for our folks.

Papworth has been at the forefront of cardiothoracic surgical procedure and medicine for half a century and is recognised around the globe as a leading institution. It is a jewel in the NHS crown and however visitors from other countries are appalled at the amenities inside which this function has to be carried out. To result in years of delay in its rebuilding on the Cambridge University hospitals campus (a single of the greatest and most sophisticated in the planet), its rightful website in the 21st century, demonstrates practically nothing if not political blindness to the relevance of the scientific developments in medicine.

For a mere £150m, the United kingdom would be delivered of a fine state-of-the-art facility that individuals and staff deserve. There can be minor doubt that the populace, whose taxes need to be utilised appropriately, would support this kind of a move. After all, if a new cardiothoracic institute can be built with one hundred% government funding at a previously unrecognised website this kind of as Basildon, certainly it must be shamed into funding this worthy venture. PFI-developed projects price the taxpayer a issue of 3 to 4 times the expense in excess of a 30-12 months period and, at the finish of it, the builders retain control. Hundreds of thousands of lbs are being poured into the pockets of developers , with additional income streams generated for them by the excessive operating charges of these institutions that they management.

• I can empathise with Stephen Bridge, the chief executive of Papworth, and his anxiety in excess of its long term, but I consider he is getting naive on at least 3 counts. 1st, the good quality and levels of health-related services and care are determined by the teams of clinicians and help personnel, not the location or the identify on the door of the hospital. Second, he raises the question of the financial troubles dealing with the Peterborough hospital triggered largely by its PFI debt, but in the very same breath says Papworth would be raising £80m by way of that same facility. PFI schemes have been one of the greatest sources of fiscal problems to beset the NHS in current many years. Third, he argues that place in the Cambridge biomedical campus is vital. Given the services of contemporary communications and the proximity of Peterborough to Cambridge – only 30 miles – it is challenging to accept this as a powerful argument.

Having served for 10 years as a patient governor on the councils of both Moorfields and now University University London, I am well aware of the rewards of hospitals becoming a component of academic health science centres, as I am also of the difficulties of financing the creating of new hospitals and the use of PFI to do so. Moorfields is dealing with a move to a substitute facility and UCLH utilised a PFI loan for its Euston Street premises. Stephen Bridge would do nicely not to confuse “NHS politics” with financial probity.

• It could be amusing, have been it no so wretched and destructive, to point out that the achievable “shotgun partnership” of Papworth hospital (“at the forefront of healthcare innovation”) with Peterborough and Stamford NHS foundation believe in (“the NHS’s most reduction-making foundation trust”) would be a stark illustration of the fallacy of the 2nd accident, popularly recognized as a “secundum quid”.

Jeremy Hunt has it in his secretary of state’s electrical power to nip this in the bud and insist that Papworth must realise its move, ten many years in the arranging, to the 310-bed hospital in the Cambridge biomedical campus, subsequent door to Addenbrooke’s, the place Roy Calne pioneered liver transplantation and considerably far more. In this predicament, the Division of Wellness ought to stick to its choice to back Papworth’s move and tell Hunt to inform the Treasury to get lost. If the Treasury decides against and Hunt offers in, then Papworth will drown and decades of British and international healthcare transplant care and advance will be issues of background and, however yet again, the fallacy of the second accident will have prevailed.
