SpaceX Will Supply 40 "Mousetronauts" To The Room Station

Later on this 12 months, when SpaceX subsequent sends a single of its Dragon spacecraft to the Global Space Station, it will have some crew members on board – forty “mousetronauts” who will be residing in the International Room Station for about 6 months.

The mice are portion of a series of experiments that NASA is conducting to understand the impact that microgravity has on the human entire body by extrapolating its effect on mice. This energy is to aid mission planners for NASA’s planned manned exploration of Mars and other elements of the solar program. Whilst astronauts on the Room Station devote up to six months in microgravity, these other missions could final two many years or far more.

Since mice usually only reside for about two years, 6 months of residing on the Global Room Station is a quarter of a mouse’s existence span. By examining how weightlessness influences the mice, researchers can extrapolate those effects to years of a human lifespan.

The mice will dwell in reusable habitat modules that can hold up to ten mice apiece. The habitat modules supply food and water, and have grids along the floor, ceiling and walls so that the mice can easily move about. The modules are also outfitted with video and infared cameras so the health of the mice can be monitored.

This is not, nonetheless, a giant leap for mousekind, as mice have been going to room for many many years. For numerous decades, NASA sent mice to space in brief stints on board the space shuttle, and two mouse immunology scientific studies have been previously performed on board the International Room Station.

The following Dragon launch to the Worldwide Room Station will be the fourth of twelve that the organization is contracted to send between now and the end of 2015. The contract’s value is $ one.six billion.

The cargo mission is presently scheduled to go to the ISS “no earlier than September.”
