Some hospitals charge up to £4 an hour – and in some areas £72 per day – for parking spaces, with costs working to hundreds of lbs for these who make repeated visits for therapy.

The worse-affected include cancer individuals who can’t consider public transport simply because they have reduced levels of immunity, and the dad and mom of premature babies, whose children are typically kept in hospital for many weeks.

Figures obtained below Freedom of Information laws identified that the common charge across all hospitals in England for 1 hour’s parking was £1.56, rising to £7.73 for a day and £39.49 for a single week. In many circumstances, hospitals charged far more.

The most expensive parking charge was at the Royal Cost-free Hospital in Hampstead, north London, the place rates were up to £72 for one particular day and £504 for a week.

“I want to cease profiteering at the expense of patients who are returning for repeat visits,” he mentioned.

It was “not acceptable” for hospitals to fail to inform individuals of concessions that are available on parking costs, the minister additional.
