Laboratory-grown vaginas engineered from the patients’ personal cells have been implanted into four teenage ladies.
Exams showed that the organs, constructed from muscle cells and the epithelial cells which line body cavities, functioned normally.
The girls, who had been aged 13 to 18 at the time of the surgical treatment, were born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome.
In ladies with the rare genetic problem, the vagina and uterus are underdeveloped or absent. A questionnaire evaluation showed that sexual perform was normal following therapy, the researchers from Wake Forest Baptist Health care Centre in Winston-Salem, US reported in The Lancet medical journal.
Cells have been grown in the laboratory before being placed on a biodegradable scaffold that was hand-sewn into the correct shape.
Every scaffold was tailor-manufactured to match the patient.
