Michael Gove agrees to write to colleges over female genital mutilation

Michael Gove has agreed to compose to all colleges about female genital mutilation, after a Guardian-backed petition urging the education secretary to consider action attracted almost 250,000 signatures.


The schooling secretary’s pledge came as he met 17-12 months-outdated student Fahma Mohamed, the face of the campaign. He agreed to create to principal and secondary headteachers drawing their consideration to safeguarding suggestions close to FGM and reminding them of their duty to shield schoolgirls.


Speaking following the meeting, Fahma explained she was relieved and delighted at the end result. “I think it is fantastic that he is ultimately listening, I come to feel like we had received in excess of the biggest hurdle and I am so glad he is willing to meet us and see the operate we do.”


She thanked the 1000′s of people who had place their names to the petition. “I want to thank each and every single person who signed, without having them we would never ever have got this meeting and Mr Gove would in no way have agreed to publish to all colleges. This is a real stage to helping us eradicate this situation permanently. It is a huge weight off my shoulders.”


Gove also agreed to think about how FGM training could be delivered in an age-acceptable way in classrooms, and promised to go to Fahma and members of the youth charity Integrate Bristol at the City Academy Bristol, 1 of two schools in the country to run a focused FGM project.


Fahma, a trustee of Integrate Bristol, met Gove alongside the charity’s founder, Lisa Zimmerman, and fellow members Naz Ahmed, Hamda Mohamed and Faduma Dualeh.


The campaign has gathered momentum in recent days, after the Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai explained Fahma was her “sister” and praised her efforts. “Above 140 million ladies and women are mutilated – but like keeping girls out of college in Pakistan, we can come out together and be powerful and alter issues for the subsequent generation,” she explained. “I am her sister and I am at her side.”


The campaign, 1 of the greatest hosted on Adjust.org, also won the backing the common secretary of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, who called it “deeply inspiring”.
