In Elder Care, Kratom Can Help Geriatric Patients Become More Lucid and Active

Elder care presents so many problems for the children who, in their prime working years, must arrange some way to care for their aging parents. Homecare is ideal, but most families nowadays have both spouses working, so this is impractical for most.

Assisted living facilities present another option, but this has limitations and is more impersonal, more detached from friends and loved ones for those being cared for.

A Key Factor in Elder Care Is the Level of the Elder’s Disability

Many of the problems inherent in caring for geriatric patients may be caused by the multiple prescriptions and OTC medications they are taking. Doctors may deny this or say there is no way to avoid it, but they may have a vested interest that prevents them from seeing other possibilities. Besides, there are many natural drug-free ways to deal with most age-related disability (and many commonly prescribed drugs, such as statins, bring little benefit and large side-effect liability).

What if there was a way to reinvigorate those who now require elder care and even Alzheimer’s care, so that they are no longer impaired by so many medications, are more lucid, more comfortable, and more like their normal selves?

What if, instead of dozing most of the day in a chair, these elderly parents could once again feel like walking, joining their caregivers on trips to the store, visits to the park, and outings with the grandchildren?

A growing number of middle-aged parents in the “sandwich generation” — having learned about kratom for their own pains, anxiety, and fatigue — are finding that kratom also works wonders in the elder care of their parents.

There are so many unnecessarily sad stories at the end of otherwise happy, productive lives. The poor guidance we receive from our medical doctors and other public health “authorities” on how to eat, what foods to avoid, and on the importance — the necessity — of nutritional supplementation are to blame, according to Joel Wallach, ND.

Nevertheless, there is a inexpensive, gentle palliative aid that restores vitality and some of the sparkle that these geriatric patients had earlier in life, thanks to the daily administration of the herb kratom.

The usual solution of placing parents in a nursing home or assisted living is often a recipe for imminent decline due to the heavy use of a variety of painkillers, anxiolytics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and other meds. The strategy of nursing home staff seems to be, “Keep them drugged up so they won’t be so demanding of our attention.”

Dozing in their wheelchairs, tied in so they won’t fall to the floor and break bones, is a sad way to treat these noble souls, warehoused in even the best nursing homes.

New Hope for Improved Elder Care with Kratom

What if the patients in elder care could be returned to a more active life, able to participate in trips to the store and conversations with loved ones and friends — all facilitated by the energy and mood-boosting qualities of kratom?

We know that a sedentary life is dooming many younger workers to obesity and early onset of a variety of diseases. Imagine what being left in a nursing home does to older adults, removed from family, given all sorts of prescription drugs, and possibly subject to abuse. Sitting all day and night, occasionally trying to converse with other drugged-up patients, moving into apparent senility accelerated by the drugs and poor quality food they’re fed.

That’s no way to treat our parents and grandparents! Some are finding a better way to make elder care more manageable, with kratom, an herb used for centuries in the Orient to gently help relieve pain, boost energy, normalize blood sugars, as well as improve mood and alertness. Research at Columbia University indicates that kratom and it’s chief alkaloids may be a much better choice than opioids, anxiolytics, and antidepressants — all in one herbal tea.

Just as this unique botanical helps restore vitality and elevate mood for younger folks, kratom is reported to create “night-and-day” turnarounds for those who have added the plant, made into a tea, into their parents’ and grandparents’ diets. Below are their stories:

Emanuel: “My Mother, who suffered from inoperable cancer of  bone and breast, took kratom for a while in place of the heavy narcotics they were giving her which neither she nor her body could tolerate. She did much better on the kratom, but when her digestive system eventually gave out, she couldn’t take it any longer… Kratom can work as a replacement for pain management, even in cancer patients.

Surprising that with all the pharma growth and medical industry success in this country, we’re still treating cancer by killing the patient…. It’s a profitable business, cancer… Don’t think it’ll go out of style anytime soon. I’d like to see a natural first approach to treatment in general… Nature is, after all, our first go-to doctor, and traditional treatment in the purest sense, not the other way around.”

Author’s Comment:  I have heard several doctors say that chemo and radiation “therapies” are what kills cancer patients, but the doctors can alway blame the disease. Chemotherapy is chosen because of its high profitability, not its success rate compared to natural therapies.

Emanuel:  “I agree. They had initially wanted to remove her whole digestive system, but she refused, thankfully. She lived ten years after the discovery of her cancer… Don’t think she would have had that long were she to listen to them… Chemo always put her in bed, progressively worse…”

Nancy:  “I wish I had a video of my 84 yr old Mom trying to toss and wash!! I ended up making her some tea ( which I should have done in the first place). But she so rarely takes a pain medication, that it’s just easier for her.”

James:  “I had an older lady, she is 89 years old now, that came in for massage every other week. She had been living with scoliosis for her entire life. Her back looked like one of those “curves ahead” signs on roads, almost a perfect “S”.

I offered her Kratom about 3 years ago. Massage was helping with her pain, but not stopping it completely. I wanted her to feel no pain.

She still takes her kratom. I send it to her every month (she is on social security, so she can’t afford to buy it). She takes 14 ounces every month, and says her pain is gone on most days.

She was only taking pain medication (lortab) when she started coming to me for Massage. She is off of those now.

For her age, and her back being totally screwed up, she is in surprisingly good health. She says that she has more energy now, and even started a new rose garden last year.

I honestly believe this lady (Miss Mary) will outlive me.”

Wendi: “My 83 year old father in law LOVES Premium Bali kratom for All his aches and pains- and he has shared it with many of his friends in that age group!”

Ang:  “We just started my half-sister’s mother and her husband on kratom and what a life changer it has been for them. They are in their eighties.

She suffers from Addison’s Disease and they both were just having lack of energy and were just going downhill really, really fast just from old age, but Wow what a difference kratom made!

It’s getting them out and getting them active again when they were both home and bedridden, pretty much.

I just couldn’t believe the difference in my sister’s mother and her husband after the first 2 weeks — it was like night and day! I’m going to guarantee that it will probably prolong their life because they’re not dormant and stationary. Now they actually can get up and around the house and go on errands with my sisters whenever they have to go to the store for him and stuff.”

Kay: My elderly neighbor, that I was taking kratom to,  was eventually taken to the hospital because of some swelling in his arm. When he came back home on other meds along with OxyContins, he started going down from there. It was awful to watch my friend slowly “go away”. I went over one morning and saw that he had had a stroke, so he went back in the hospital and died. I know I can’t blame one thing, but he was doing good with the kratom and that was a big dose of “Oxies” for such a tiny frail man. Because of the Oxys, all he did was sleep and he could barely walk. I miss my buddy!”

Author’s Comment: It’s just my layman’s opinion, having read these accounts of happier outcomes in elder care with kratom — and my own experience of seeing my mother’s decline, due to a broken hip, a hospital stay, and the “best” nursing home care — kratom would have been a far better option if it had been available then for her elder care, compared to the mind-robbing medications and Electro-Convulsive Therapy they treated her with (the latter without my prior knowledge or permission, as her legal guardian). More humane methods of elder care are needed.

Paul Kemp writes often about the constructive uses of the herb kratom he has seen and heard about in the community of millions of medicinal consumers.

Kratom Use by Pets — Anecdotal Reports by Pet Lovers

The use of the herb kratom in pets has been a subject of much interest, due to the amazing results pet owners have reported and credited to the botanical. Much of the research to determine the safety of kratom has been done on animals, generally on rats and mice, but occasionally on dogs and cats. The good news, though limited, is that — even at absurdly high doses of the pure principle alkaloid, Mitragynine or standardized extracts of the whole plant,  all the animals survived. Only at the highest doses of pure Mitragynine was there found to be any damage to the animals’ kidneys and/or livers.

Anecdotal reports by those who care for pets have been very encouraging for dogs with hip dysplasia, other injuries, anxiety, and age-related low energy, etc., as you’ll see below.

The comments of several veterinarians and care-givers in pet rescue facilities have been supportive of giving kratom to dogs in small doses. For some unconfirmed reason, veterinarians are apparently universally opposed to giving kratom to cats. Nobody has been able to tell us why or to direct us to research that would confirm this.

We can only speculate on whether kratom supplementation in other pets, such as rabbits, donkeys, and reptiles would be healthy for them. By deductive reasoning, those that are able to digest plant matter should be fine.  The owners of pets should keep in mind that kratom, even with all fiber removed, still has the effect of slowing digestive motility, so it’s important to keep doses to a minimum and watch for signs of constipation.

Having said this, let’s allow the pet owners tell what they have seen in their Pets:

Dominique:  My 3 legged pit bull gets Kratom when he’s in pain. 1/8tsp does it and you can see the relief both in his expression and movement within 20 minutes.

Kristie:  I wet the part of my finger they take your finger print from and then press it into my dogs kratom. Then rub it on their gums and whats left rub on their tongue. I use it on my beagle for her seizures. They have stopped since I started her on kratom. Then I give my pit kratom for pain. She has cancer. I only give them reds with just a tiny bit of yellow kapuas. With the pit I will add just a tad of white if she is having a good day and wants to go and do doggie things.

Katie:  We had a dog named Red, he was an old boxer with terminal bowel cancer, in his last few days before he was to be put down I gave him a dose of Kratom, I figured that it helped me feel better, and his pain meds were doing nothing. Lo and behold, the old bastard got up from his somber sad corner of the world and started playing for the first time in months, and he ate for the first time in a couple of days, it was like he was a totally new dog. I only wish I would have given it to him much sooner maybe it would have slowed the whole process down or even stopped it. He was still put to sleep, because it was 2 little too late, but at least he was able to enjoy his last few days, I definitely would recommend kratom to literally anyone or any animal. I hope this story helps.

Bekkah: My Winston,  he’s a little Jack Russell/Javanese mix and the biggest baby you’ve ever seen. We thought he had sprained a paw or something, he was limping around all afternoon so for dinner I took about an eighth of a teaspoon or a little less and sprinkled it on his food. Took a little coaxing but he ate it. About 45 minutes later I noticed him jumping on the couch without trouble.

Connie:  I used it for my Jack Russell for several months before we let her rest. She was hurting a lot and 1/4 tsp on her good morning and night helped her get through the day with her tail wagging. I alternated red Sumatra at night and bentuangie in the mornings.

Stormy:  I use it for my two chihuahas all the time. The past 3 weeks my female is in heat so my male has been running around house nuts whining 24 hours a day. I give him half gram Green Indo[a type of kratom] and he relaxes and is not in misery anymore.

Kerra: This past summer an old stray dog showed up here. In bad shape! Hungry, covered in fleas, ticks, and some sores. Missing teeth and arthritic, we took him in, bathed and pampered him. He got real bad at one point. Wouldn’t or couldn’t get up to go outside or eat. We sprinkled just under 1/4 teaspoon Red Bali [another type or “strain” of kratom] in his breakfast for three days. Day 3 he got up, running around like a young pup. Doing fine since then. Haven’t had to give more at this point.

Julie:  I have been giving kratom to my senior dog for his arthritis for about 4 months now. He was at the point where he could hardly get up or walk. I hate the arthritis meds the vets give for dogs (really damaging to liver and expensive). I mix a 1/4 tsp Red Borneo or Bali in a tsp of coconut oil, morning and evening, and he laps it right up. I’ve even started to mix in a pinch of turmeric. (He’s about 50 lbs) Everybody has noticed the difference in him, in fact my husband was getting a little annoyed because now he’s up and begging in the kitchen again lol! If I am late for a dose he will come and find me to remind me, so I know even he knows it’s helping him. I don’t know anything about using kratom in younger dogs, but for these older dogs who aren’t going to be around much longer, it sure is nice to know there is something to help them feel comfortable in their senior years.

Jeannette:  I used it for our little dog that is about 30 lbs and 2 yrs old. He had abdominal surgery for a blockage. The surgery went well but the vet tech put him on a heating pad while he was still out of it and he ended up with 3rd degree burns on about 1/2 of one side of his body. He was in so much pain and tramadol was not even touching it. He just laid there and cried. I gave him 1 (00 size) capsule and it seems to really help but he was still whimpering. I gave him another and he quieted right down so he was getting 2 capsules about every 4 hrs for about a month and a half. He would just eat them like a treat. When it began to wear off, he would cry and whine. After about 2 months he is about healed up and no longer needs the kratom but he still begs for it. His scars look great and hair is slowly beginning to grow back. I really think kratom probably saved this little guy’s life. If not that, it sure helped him with recovery.

Sue: I’ve been giving Kimmie, my twelve year old Border Collie Mix three capsules of red every day. She seems to feel so much better from her arthritis.

Amy:  I have a 3 year old golden with severe hip dysplasia. I’ve tried all the supplements. NONE of them worked except this one! I also have a ton of friends in golden rescue who I’ve switched them over to it as well. Not a single complaint. Only positive stories.

Jill: I’m a foster mom for the local shelter and I use kratom for scared, anxious or hurt dogs. I also use it for my 18 yr old Collie and it helps my Terrier with her nervous behavior.

Ryan: So I gave Kratom to my chihuahua. His paw was hurting for some reason. He was barely walking around.. After he ate it though, he was running around the yard like it’d never even happened. It was strange cuz he hasnt been limping since.

Robert: We utilized kratom with our 14 year old black lab, ‘Bear’. He had severe joint/hip pain (and other issues), so severe, that he didn’t jump on ‘his couch’ for 3+ years. I mixed aprox. 2 grams of a green vein, in with his wet/dry dog food mix.

ONE hour later, he had jumped his big ass on ‘his couch’ again! It may seem insignificant, but this was HYUUUGE for him, at that stage in his life!

He left us a year & a half ago, but ever since that jump, he had his proprietary blend of kratom mixed in with his dog food every day.

Our ONLY regret was not trying this ‘experiment’ sooner.

Gina:  I have a 10 year old male poodle who weighs 20 pounds. He was diagnosed with arthritis in both of his back legs about 6 months ago. The vet put him on 2 prescription drugs. It helped very little. I started him on kratom 7 days ago. 1 gram of a mixture green/red. Once again kratom worked its magic! He is back to walking normal and going up and down steps. He even wants to play ball again. My only regret is not putting him on kratom 6 months ago. He’s back to being my mischievous boy!

Adan:  I have a 15 year old Maltese with cancer, I’ve been feeding her kratom, turmeric, cat’s claw and graviola, needless to say the doctors were shocked to see her tumors disappearing, she was diagnosed 3 years ago. Kratom helped most of all to get her up, motivated, active and helped with her appetite. I assume it’s because of its pain relieving properties that she’s so healthy and eating well despite having had cancer.

Here is the little that I’ve been able to find in the kratom published research concerning cats:

“…it had little effect on the blood pressure of dogs, was only hypotensive in cats at high doses, and was much less of a respiratory depressant than codeine.” Referring to testing with pure mitragynine on cats and dogs. It went on to say, “Large doses in cats had stimulating effects, qualitatively different than opiates.”  From “Ethnopharmacology of Kratom and the Mitragyna Alkaloids” Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 23 (1988) 115-119, Elsevier Scientific Publishers Ltd. Ireland

The researchers’ idea of high doses was 18.4 — 46mg/Kg of PURE Mitragynine, without the moderating effects of the other alkaloids in the botanical — and no deaths or other negative side-effects were mentioned, which leads me (tentatively) to believe, pending further evidence of possible negative effects of other of the 27 alkaloids usually present in whole kratom, that kratom for cats is safe, at least for acute pain relief in the short term.

We heard one anecdotal report of a cat whose leg was broken when a car hit the cat during the winter in Maine. The cat was found by its owners with a chicken sitting on it, keeping it warm (and alive). It being the weekend and no veterinarian available, they gave the cat kratom to ease the pain, which caused the cat to stop crying and be able to eat, rest, and recouperate.  When the cat began crying again, a few hours later, the kratom was given again as needed. When the cat was strong enough, the leg had to be amputated, but the cat is now healthy and no longer needs kratom.

It is my hope that pet owners can deduce for themselves a sense of the safety and efficacy that the use of kratom may provide their pets so they can enjoy life more, in spite of aging and injuries. There were many more owner accounts — all favorable — that I will use in a future article on the subject of pets and kratom.

Paul Kemp is fascinated with all the many uses people have found for the herb kratom. He has written about it frequently since 2012.

Here is a study that demonstrates that pure Mitragynine is relatively safe for rats (and we may assume other mammals) at lower sub-chronic doses.

The DEA’s New War On Kratom, An Ancient Medicinal Plant

When you search for photos of kratom on Google Images, you see a long series of trees, leaves, and small piles of green powder. Everything seems innocuous enough, but the DEA would tell you a different story. Through their eyes this is the new devil’s weed, a drug that poses so much of an “imminent hazard” to the public that it warrants the use of their emergency scheduling powers.

On or shortly after September 30th, the DEA will make use of those powers to classify kratom as a Schedule 1 drug, alongside the likes of heroin, LSD, and MDMA. History is in the making, as this will be the first time the agency has used emergency scheduling to ban a plant.1 The move has been officially cited as “temporary,” lasting two years (with a one-year extension option available) before the DEA and FDA will jointly decide on a permanent classification.2

For many this may seem like a fringe issue, a ban on something they’ve never heard of and don’t care about. While that outlook is understandable, it is important for everyone to understand the larger effects this ban will have on society and our communities. As kratom activists have been arguing for the past several weeks, once the law is in place we are likely to see a large uptick in opiate overdoses, a wave of people returning to prescription drugs they had previously given up, and an overall increase in many other’s chronic pain.

But how did we get here, and how are these things related?

Kratom – What It Is

To start, there are a few things about the herb that are notoriously misreported in most media coverage. To understand kratom in this precise moment, one has to wade through a veritable sea of misinformation being dispersed by many with a vested interest in banning it.

Kratom is the name given to the leaves of the Mitragyna Speciosa tree, a close relative of the coffee tree that is native to Southeast Asia. It is not a drug synthesized out of the leaves, rather, it is the leaves themselves, either fresh, dried or powdered. It has a long history of use in Asian cultures, where it has been used for thousands of years as a valuable and beneficial medicine. The leaves have traditionally been chewed fresh straight off the tree, or brewed and drank as a tea. It’s use in the U.S. began and spread via the internet, with users appearing to have grown steadily since the mid-to-late 2000’s.

Kratom is not a traditional opiate, but it does activate the mu-opiod receptors in the brain, thus stimulating senses of pain relief and well-being.3 While these effects are real, they are relatively mild in strength when compared to synthetic drugs like Vicodin and Percocet. Many users say they prefer kratom to those drugs because of the relative lack of inebriation it brings, while still giving them relief from anxiety and pain. Staggering numbers of testimonials from users across the internet serve to back these claims – people from all walks of life, from teachers to mothers, veterans and police, all say that kratom helps provide relief from their various ailments while letting them live a functional and productive life.

For many that have been following the fight (since the DEA published their letter of intent on August 30th), the real problem appears to be clear: that kratom works too well, for too many things, and is thereby a threat to pharmaceuticals. To be clear, this is merely a logical inference, not a declaration of that industry’s guilt. It’s no secret Big Pharma does spend massive amounts on lobbying – 8 times more than the NRA, as Business Insider recently reported – so the idea that they might be involved is far less than a conspiracy.4 But whether or not their aggressive lobbying is in play can, for now, be put aside. The fact remains that kratom has gotten thousands of people relief from various conditions, and has done so independently of pills. It doesn’t take an MBA to realize kratom is a competitor, a substance whose growing use must be alarming to all those competing.

The Battle For Kratom (and Our Natural Rights)

Little-known as it is, the fight for kratom is truly an enigma of modern times. In 2016, and with all the progress that’s been made by the medical marijuana communities, it is puzzling to think that the DEA still believes – and has – the power to outlaw a plant from nature.

The studies carried out on kratom point not to an imminent hazard, but instead to a potential source of relief for addiction and chronic pain conditions. There is virtually no way to overdose on the plant (like marijuana), and the DEA’s claim that 15 deaths caused by kratom were actually caused by users taking cocktails of drugs that happened to include kratom. With the medical and scientific literature on the side of the herb, many are left wondering why an agency based neither in science or health has the authority to make life-altering decisions in both fields.

Opponents of the ban are surprisingly numerous, vocal, and influential. Thousands of people connecting online have made serious inroads towards delaying or halting the ban altogether, with a Whitehouse.gov petition currently at more than 130,000 signatures (the 2nd most popular petition on the site). Over 15 Congressional representatives have now signed on to a letter demanding that the DEA delay the scheduling and give due process for the act by allowing a period of public comment.

Two groups, the American Kratom Association (AKA) and the Botanical Education Alliance (BEA) are currently working as representation for the kratom community, moving forward on many activist initiatives. Awareness and opposition amongst the general public, celebrities and other public figures is growing everyday, but any move towards a delay is not expected from the DEA until September 30th at the earliest.

The DEA’s New War On Kratom, An Ancient Medicinal Plant

20 Eylül 2016 Salı

DEA’s Proposed Ban on Kratom Harms Those They Claim to Protect

As the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) goes about its deliberate, unemotional process of turning the herb kratom into an outlawed substance, it is worthwhile to think about those who will suffer as a result of having one more aspect of their freedom removed.

An estimated 5.5 million Americans use kratom. We can only guess that half or more of this number use it as an alternative to various forms of synthetic pharmaceutical medicines. With the limitations the DEA has placed on doctors prescribing opioids, one might think that there would be some appreciation that Americans have found a safer, herbal helper for overcoming chronic pain and opioid dependency — a problem largely created by the pharmaceutical industry’s heavy marketing of opioids as minimally addictive pain relief in the 1990s.

And yet, the DEA has consistently portrayed kratom as a recreational drug, though it is hard to imagine a substance that is so unpleasant-tasting and inconvenient as kratom being as popular as this plant material is.

If kratom is to be considered a recreational drug, then perhaps we should view its sister herb coffee as a recreational drug, too.

One thing the DEA doesn’t seem to consider is that — although they proclaim that kratom has “no recognized medicinal uses”, many (most?) of those who consume it on a regular basis do so because, for them, it serves a medicinal purpose for them.

Most kratom consumers have tried the alternatives of modern medicines and found the side-effects intolerable, debilitating, and often deadly if one doctor prescribes a drug that shouldn’t be taken at the same time another drug that another doctor prescribes is taken.

In a random conversation as I was preparing this article, I mentioned opioid medications, and the woman I was buying my farm-fresh eggs from told me that one of her family members had died from an accidental overdose of properly prescribed opioid painkillers. Where is the DEA’s concern over those dangerous drugs?

The DEA evidently accepts deaths and disabling conditions caused by pharmaceuticals because the manufacturers have done extensive research (though much of it may be fraudulent ) and their paperwork appears to be in order.

You might say that, “Big Pharma has paid to play and kratom hasn’t, though considerable research exists and long historical use which vouch for kratom’s safety and medical benefits, although these have not been officially recognized by the FDA or DEA.”

And yet, the DEA goes to great lengths to accuse kratom of causing a few deaths — almost all of which occur in multidrug users who were taking substances known to cause death. Honest professional toxicologists have looked at these deaths and pointed out that in none of the cases was kratom found to be the actual cause of death.

But, if the DEA says so, to some official minds, it must be true. Federal rules require a suspension of disbelief, apparently.

Here, in the Real World, Real People will be hurt by an arbitrary ban on kratom and its key alkaloids, Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

The availability of opioid drugs, which have been the mainstay of the medical treatment for pain over the past 20+ years, has been drastically reduced — even to those who obviously have medically recognized painful conditions. This sudden cutback has caused many chronic pain sufferers to look for alternatives, which led many to kratom, where — by most reports — they found a better quality of relief without the disabling lethargy, constipation, and brain fog commonly caused by opioids.

Ah,but nevermind that the pain patient prefers this herb over all the medications they’re tried! The DEA knows best what’s good for you — or so we are expected to believe!

How the DEA’s intent to Criminalize Kratom Will Harm Innocent Consumers

The story of Brian Butts reveals the fallacy of the DEA’s argument, which has insisted that kratom and its alkaloids are a substance of abuse that millions  are taking because it offers a “legal high” or is in some way as strong or stronger than heroin, morphine and the rest of the opioid family. The truth is quite different.

Brian was born with a recognized, painful medical condition — a birth defect that surgery can’t fix and physical therapy can’t remedy. He will always need something to help with the pain. He could have legally-prescribed oxycodone, but he prefers kratom’s unique ability to remove pain without any noticeable mental or physical side-effects. (Please read his brief testimonial and view the pictures of his painful natural deformity in the link above.)

The truth is very different than the DEA’s “spin” which is used to demean this useful and uniquely different herb.

This recent study from Columbia University puts the lie to the DEA portrayal that kratom is a substance of abuse that has no medical benefit.

The truth, which the DEA and FDA seem to be trying so hard to disguise, is that millions of kratom consumers simply prefer the quality of relief that kratom, a very complex and balanced mixture of alkaloids, delivers over expensive and ultimately debilitating pharmaceutical painkillers derived from the poppy plant.

Objective observers have tried kratom and found nothing like a “high” in the herb. See the link to Huffington Post article below.

Kratom has proven itself a threat to the continued profits of the pharmaceutical industry and also the alcohol industry. This is the “crime” that kratom represents — the crime of revealing that Nature has provided us with a superior product that consumers report replaces a laundry list of synthetic and overpriced drugs.

Why shouldn’t we have the freedom to choose what works best for us? With more than 100,000 of us dying each year as a result of taking pharmaceutical, FDA-approved drugs in U.S. hospitals under controlled conditions, it would seem that we take a far greater risk with pharmaceuticals than we do with kratom.

With most kratom vendors making no medical claims for their product, as dictated by FDA regulations, why shouldn’t Brian Butts and millions of others be able to obtain the pain relief that works best for them — from Nature?

Who or what is the DEA protecting? It doesn’t seem to be the public’s safety or quality of life.

Millions of Americans will be harmed if the DEA is allowed by Congress to proceed with its egregious and unprecedented scheduling of kratom and its alkaloids on or about October 1st, 2016.

Lupus (SLE) and Kratom — Two Women’s Stories

Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) or SLE is usually grouped with the autoimmune diseases. Conventional medicine doesn’t know for sure what causes it and — because they theorize that for some unknown reason the patient’s immune system has decided to begin attacking its own body — most of the treatment revolves around suppressing the immune system, which causes a whole new set of problems.

Women in their prime of life (ages 15-44) are nine times more likely to develop lupus than men.

That autoimmunity is just a theory, with often conflicting test results, does not stop rheumatologists from having a field day using the pharmaceutical tools they have to weaken the body’s protective immune system, leaving the patient exposed to yet more dangers from opportunistic infections.

Multiple organ systems are affected by Lupus — How much of the damage seen is caused by the medications and how much is intrinsic with the disease? Nobody knows, but then, is anybody looking?

Rather than get into an academic discussion of the theories supporting the various methods of treating lupus, let’s just allow two women — both of whom use the herb kratom to manage their symptoms — to tell their stories.

Here’s Angie’s Story:

“In 1992 I was in a car accident. I have herniated discs in my neck and back thanks to that.  In 1998 I was diagnosed with Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Raynaud’s. I have scoliosis in which the curve (of my spine) pushes on the herniated discs in my back causing almost continuous pain. I have a bad knee from a sports injury as a teenager needing yet more surgery. I have arthritis in my left big toe so bad it no longer bends. I will always be on Plaquenil to keep my lupus under control as much as possible but there is no cure for lupus. For pain I have been on Corticosteroids (steroids like prednisone), anti-inflammatory drugs (Naprosyn or ibuprofen), pain meds (Vicodin, Vicoprofen, Percocet), muscle relaxers (Flexeril) and sleep meds (Lunesta or Ambien and/or trazodone) for many years. While the pain meds helped at first it never completely handled all the issues plus it came with side effects. I refused to take any RA biologics (like Enbrel or Humira) for the pain or cancer drugs (methotrexate) because I felt the side effects far outweighed what it might help.  The pain continued to get worse over the years. I struggled daily and continued to use only ibuprofen for pain. Most people know people with lupus are in pain but another thing you battle is extreme exhaustion. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year non-stop exhaustion.

Two years ago a close friend of mine brought over some all natural pain medicine she got from the chiropractor. They were gelatin capsules filled with Mitragyna Speciosa better known as kratom. It is the ground up leaves of an evergreen tree in the coffee family that is native to Indonesia.  I tried the (capsules) to humor her. I was expecting absolutely nothing.  However, I was surprisingly amazed! My back did not hurt. My neck did not hurt. My toe did not hurt even while wearing tight fitting shoes. I also noticed I had more energy. With kratom I was able to do basic chores for more than 10 minutes at a time. I ordered myself some of the capsules and that was the beginning of my kratom journey.

I began to do more and more research on kratom. I read tons of great things about people who took it for various reasons; chronic pain, energy, MS, RLS, depression, diarrhea, insomnia, Crohn’s, Lyme Disease, diabetes and opiate withdrawal. I joined groups and forums to talk to others using this wonderful plant. I learned about different strains that offer different results. Some are more stimulating, others more relaxing. I learned about various ways to take kratom such as with water, juice, coffee, cider, smoothie, making tea, capsules etc. I read anything I could find on kratom be it good or bad. Throughout reading the information a pattern became obvious. People who were taking kratom said wonderful things about it. Things like how much it has helped them and changed their quality of life. However, the DEA and media say something completely different. I would like to say that they are inaccuracies but that would be an understatement. Fallacies would be the correct term. Below you will find three examples.

Kratom gives you heroin like high.

FALSE. You do not get high from kratom.

Kratom is dangerous and you can overdose.

FALSE. You cannot overdose on kratom. If you take too much kratom you will get nauseous. It you really take too much you will throw it up.

Kratom is addictive and you will go into withdrawal without it.

FALSE. You do not go into withdrawal. I’ve used it on and off for two years and have never had any withdrawal symptoms. What you WILL notice when you stop taking it is how much it was helping you.

I cannot say enough good things about how this plant has changed my life. Most days I have no pain at all except for some in my knee which requires surgery. However, overall even my knee feels better.  I have energy again. I am able to do chores, go shopping and even some yard work. At night I am able to relax and sleep without pain and without drugs. Someone recently asked me to describe my life with kratom. I said I feel normal again. I am able to participate in my life instead of watching it go by. What an amazing feeling that is.”

Angie’s doctor is aware that she is a consumer of kratom and is supportive of that because of the visible results in her blood tests. Angie also uses the herb Turmeric to help control the pain and inflammation that come with Lupus. There is some very compelling scientific research that supports Turmeric for this purpose.

Here Is Lois’ Story:

“I was diagnosed with lupus/scleraderma when I was around 10 years old. I have pain from head to toe, RA, hardening of the esophagus and several muscles,  several DVTs, chronic illnesses, (get sick easy and stay sick longer than most), exhausting tiredness,  and neuropathy. I have been to more Dr’s than I can count and in and out of hospitals over the past 10 years. I’ve tried every treatment they suggested, many were steroid drugs for inflammation and to prevent tissue damage and neurontin . I was with pain management for 10 years and was treated with methadone and a surgical device called a neuro-stimulator. I’ve gained 60 plus lbs and lost all my teeth due to medications. I came across kratom around 7 months a go. I stumbled on it surfing the Web for natural alternatives for pain relief. I was skeptical and thought to myself that there was no way something natural could truly help me.

Up until I tried kratom for the first time, I spent most of my life in bed, missing out on life experiences. Racked with pain and depression  and suicidal thoughts,  I gave kratom a try. 7 months later I happily report that I currently do not take any prescription drugs. I no longer stay in bed everyday. I’ve only been sick a few times and was very minor and the duration was very short. Compared to being sick more than I was well is huge. I have a clear head, unlike the methadone life I led. I now enjoy my 6 grandchildren. Kratom gave my family me back.

I had a doctor tell me I would never be well and I most likely would die a painful death. I know better.”

Editor: They love to threaten their patients with pain and death if you don’t do what they (MDs) order, don’t they?

Lois: “Exactly! Then treat you like a drug seeker.”

Editor: If you are doing much better now, by objective standards, than when you were on their meds, that really makes one wonder what conventional therapies for Lupus are all about.

Author Paul Kemp harbors a deep skepticism about the pharmceutical-driven U.S. healthcare system after almost 6 decades of noting its failures in family and friends. He has found good health by avoiding processed foods and supporting his health with nutrition and kratom.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Kratom

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is an often-unpleasant health-related issue that may produce in those with seemingly superhuman physical abilities in their youth. EDS presents itself in extremely varied techniques and hence, is challenging to describe concisely.

Think about if — while youthful, you had Gumby-like yogic talents with which to amuse your pals. Then, as you grew older, odd, physique-wide soreness grew to become a frequent occurrence, possibly moving from location to spot in your entire body. As several as half of individuals who possess this genetic defect really do not realize it and hence, are not prepared for some of the potentially existence-threatening issues that can come up. This is specifically real of people with the vascular variety of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

It is difficult to know how to strategy this unusual condition. Is it a topic for comedy? Often, it is. Some EDS sufferers have developed a fine sense of humor to help them deal with the inexplicable, unpredictable habits of their body. Other times it is the cause of significant pain and the supply of private tragedy, even death. The significance of an early diagnosis can not be more than-stressed, specifically for individuals with the vascular variety of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is an inherited defect in a person’s ability to create collagen. What is collagen, you inquire? Collagen constitutes 25-35% of the protein in your entire body. It holds you together. Undesirable things can take place, almost anyplace in your physique if collagen is to any degree absent and/or defective.

There are a variety of related syndromes, which we really don’t have time to go into here: Marfan Syndrome, Loeys-Dietz, Ectopia-Lentis Syndrome, and other individuals.

Self-Medicating Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome with the botanical Kratom

Numerous of individuals who suffer these disease syndromes have discovered their way to kratom, an herb that gently generates relief for soreness, anxiety, and the depression that difficulties them. Kratom, they say is far preferable to the opioid drugs that their health-related teams typically prescribe. A single big plus for people who will be medicating for an increasing lifetime of ache and often associated digestive disorders is the fact that kratom’s main analgesic alkaloids are about one-tenth as constipative as morphine, for illustration.

In hunting above the therapies for those with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome — and notably the vascular variety, where blood strain medications are often prescribed to reduce the likelihood of aortic or other vascular ruptures — kratom might supply a tiny-identified advantage. Kratom is made up of an alkaloid called Raubasine, which has anti-hypertensive, anti-adrenergic, and vasodilator actions, which may be useful in reducing blood strain. Raubasine was utilized as the commencing level to create the anti-hypertensive medicine, Ajmalicine.

It ought to be regarded as that the amount of Raubasine will vary in kratom, dependent on the strain and in which it was grown. A discussion of this can be discovered at the bottom of this record of kratom alkaloids. To sum it up, it appears that Raubasine/Ajmalicine takes place in most genotypes of Mitragyna speciosa. As a result, it is sensible to figure this into any calculations of how significantly blood strain medication and/or kratom these afflicted with the vascular complication of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome could need to have.

We may surmise that numerous of individuals with this hereditary condition, triggered by a defect in their production of collagen, have located employment in the circus in many years past as “contortionists”.

As suspected, we located this to be real. As a single Ehlers-Danlos-Syndrome sufferer in her mid-forties pointed out, the discomfort of EDS does not develop right up until later in life. Therefore, most contortionists — blessed or cursed with the hypermobility sort of EDS — are not significantly older than 30.

How widespread? EDS Foundations says there is one case in every single five-ten,000 Americans. Other sources say one particular in 400,000. Even now other estimates exist. It is no doubt difficult to choose who has it, if they are even mindful of it.

Regular treatment method? Depends on the sort one particular has. There are 6 key types and five or more small variations. Prescription and OTC painkillers, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, and anti-hypertensives are regularly used to treat the signs and symptoms and problems. A lot of EDS sufferers are increasingly attempting Kratom.

Therapy from a wholistic standpoint would contain dietary supplements recognized to build wholesome collagen. Naturopaths teach that every person requirements supplements to assistance healthy growth, fix, and upkeep of all tissues in a usually nutrient-deficient diet regime. When Naturopathic Physician Peter Glidden was asked if genetic ailments could be aided with scientific nutrition, he gave examples of rewards he has noticed in the program of his 27 years of clinical experience.

Testimonies Gathered from EDS sufferers who use Kratom

Kathrynn: “Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome causes a whole lot of subluxations and dislocations of joints, increases the danger of falls and injury, and is painful and exhausting all by itself just since of the sheer work that our muscle groups should do to sustain stability in the absence of adequate assistance from tendons and ligaments ***due to the collagen defect***. Kratom is this kind of a godsend to give rest and relief from these symptoms.”

When asked if EDS runs in her household. She replied: “I am the first to be “officially” diagnosed but yes, we see the proof of it. My son has it as effectively.”

Jen: “I’m a random mutant. 1st case in the family members. #SwitchedAtBirth”

Jen: “As for EDS: I have brittle bones and serious hypermobility. The continual stretching of the connective tissue in and about my joints has made it really difficult for me to obtain muscle strength (stronger muscles would help preserve the joints stable, although the muscle tissue is also not standard). Kratom aids me with the fatigue and the discomfort, with out the “high” feeling that I get from opiates/opioids.

Amanda: “I have EDS and fibro(myalgia). This totally sucks.”

Jen: “Been informed that I have fibro too, but the EDS is reason adequate to lead to ALL of the concerns that they say are fibro.”

Amanda: “Yup — and they utilized to say that fibro doesn’t influence or harm your joints. But now they’re saying it does. I truthfully believe that tons of people are just misdiagnosed. I noticed a geneticist final week who does not know his (butt) from a hole in the wall. I posted about it in an Illinois EDS group, so I’m rather considerably screwed on getting an actual diagnosis unless my GP does some studying, which typically he will. There is only genuinely two people in Illinois that know sufficient. A single is Dr.Tinkle in Chicago, who’s waiting record is closed. The other a single is in Urbana, and does not consider adults. So yeah, my doc currently thinks it is my answer though.”

Irene: “My husband and I, plus our youngest two, have EDS. We are on our second week of utilizing kratom. So far, it has eased my husband’s joint soreness and my back soreness. In truth, I haven’t taken my prescribed norco because beginning kratom. One of my daughters reports pain considerable soreness relief also. The youngest daughter chose to be our ‘control’. She nonetheless has continual pain.”

Amanda: “With EDS I get a good deal of subluxations. My index finger on my right hand dislocates typically, creating my hand to ache. Any time I select up anything with weight, it pulls outwards, and is kinda gross. My correct shoulder subluxes frequently. My knees wiggle around A Good deal. When I lift my leg to walk, the bones of my reduce leg pull out and forward so when I step back down it slams back into spot. I get a lot of tight muscle groups and muscle spasms from my muscles attempting to hold things in location. And I also get a whole lot of migraines from my neck. My hips like to shift so they are not even and that triggers a good deal of soreness when I’m on my feet all day. And let’s not neglect the loose bowels. (hahahahaha) Kratom assists the soreness. The discomfort of the muscle tissues, the nerves that get jolted and pinched when issues are going in and out all the time. It keeps me at operate most of the time. When my shoulder is pinching and I’m in tears, it calms it down to a tolerable level so I can get up, get out, and do my point. It will take the ache down in my hand so at operate I can jump on a register and assist instead of saying it hurts as well a lot. I come to feel far more productive and helpful. And let’s not forget it assists these bowels also. When I’m exhausted from my body holding itself together, I include in some White Vein Kratom to keep my energy up. And being in significantly less ache aids my moods. I’m not as grumpy or depressed. YAY KRATOM!

Jen: “There are so many things that make it complex, and so many sorts. Some people have gastroparesis, dysautonomia, vascular problems, and the checklist goes on. It would take a book to cover all the various problems and what all-natural treatments may well assist.”

Amanda: “Another tip to deal with EDS is to maintain your muscle groups strong. Do muscle building exercises whether you come to feel like you need to have them or not. And my medical professional informed me not to dare take it easy on myself. Since I heeded that advice I’ve been carrying out a good deal greater. Items are not slipping out of area as a lot any longer.

“Just by currently being me and carrying out the factors at function that other people get astonished that a lady does, keeps me stronger. Management wasn’t letting me do some of these factors. Even the little items, like pushing the buying carts in the door. They did not want me to get harm. But when I last but not least place my foot down, started out pushing carts and carrying out the carry outs and moving the heavy things, my shoulder stopped slipping out. And I’ve had fewer headaches. And I’ve ditched the knee braces.”

Author Paul Kemp has created a pastime of finding normal methods that wholistic doctors use to appropriate health-related concerns, mainly blood-sugar-related. He writes regularly about the outcomes he and other folks have noticed employing kratom.

Is Kratom the New "Bath Salts" or Just an Organic Pain Reliever with Euphoric Effects?

By now you’ve heard about “Bath Salts” (psychoactive stimulants) and “Spice” (synthetic marijuana) — drugs that had been until just lately very easily discovered and bought at fuel stations and tobacco outlets across the nation.  The Drug Enforcement Company (DEA)  has cracked down on these and other variations of these drugs by labeling the major ingredients as managed substances. Producers of the medicines maintain discovering methods to skirt those regulations, but total it is significantly tougher to purchase them now than it was just a 12 months ago.

But, have you heard of the latest legal drug craze to hit a gasoline station near you?  It’s called Kratom, and not like bath salts, Spice or any of the synthetic, formerly ”legal” medicines on the DEA hit checklist, this one is totally natural, and so far not listed as a managed substance.

Kratom is another name for the leaves of the mitragyna speciosa tree, which look like large, smooth, oval mint leaves. The trees are indigenous to Southeast Asia and their leaves have been utilized as a conventional medication in Thailand and Asian countries for centuries. Kratom is not new to the United States. It is been floating around the herbal marketplace for decades, offered as a tonic for a range of makes use of, but in the last few years it has steadily acquired traction as one of the major legal drugs of selection amongst the Bath Salt, Sativa, Spice crowd.

The result of the drug mimics that of opiates, ranging from sedation to pain reduction to extreme euphoria. It also carries with it a host of opiate side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, constipation, and in worst situations hallucinations and delusions.

Kratom is offered as raw or crushed leaves that can be smoked or steeped for tea, and also in gel caps. Potencies and strains fluctuate, as do costs (generally $ 15 to $ 50 per five-gram packet, or $ 18 to $ 25 for about 50 capsules). Doses normally range from two to 10 grams.

The DEA lists Kratom as a “Drug and Chemical of Concern.”  In a number of other nations, however, it has been banned outright, including  Bhutan, Australia, Finland, Denmark, Poland,Lithuania, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), and Thailand, where it is reportedly the third most popular drug, behind meth and marijuana.

Until finally just lately it wasn’t even achievable to determine Kratom in drug exams, but a new urine test just grew to become accessible that is able to isolate essential compounds in the drug.

Kratom is not with no its supporters, who argue that the substance has been utilised for centuries as a secure means to alleviate pain, improve vitality and reduce anxiety.  You can pay a visit to the Kratom Association to understand considerably far more about the drug and why its supporters fervently defend it.

The drug’s supporters argue, for instance, that there is no credible proof that Kratom is an addictive substance. This is not fully real.   A 2004 study on the tolerance and withdrawal results of kratom in mice performed jointly by the Josai Worldwide University in Japan and Chulalongkorn University in Thailand concluded that tolerance to seven-hydroxymitragynine (the chemical in Kratom thought to possess addictive properties) produced “as takes place to morphine,” and there was proof of cross-tolerance to morphine, as well. Withdrawal signs and symptoms also have been observed. [Phoenix New Times, August four, 2011].

And as MSNBC reported earlier this year, Kratom use is creating its presence identified in more and more hospital emergency rooms.

To be fair, caution is warranted ahead of throwing Kratom into the exact same basket as Bath Salts and Spice. At the extremely least, it’s a relatively “clean” drug compared to the others, which are mixtures of synthetic chemical substances, numerous identified to be toxic.  But whether or not or not Kratom deserves a  DEA-exempt existence among legal substances in the marketplace remains to be witnessed.
