Spain’s conservative government has accepted an abortion law that rolls back existing legislation permitting the method without restrictions till the 14th week.

Justice minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón stated on Friday that abortion will only be permitted in the situation of rape or when there is a severe mental or bodily health threat to the mom. Accredited fetal deformities that would endanger a child’s existence if born will also be accepted.

He mentioned sixteen- and 17-12 months-olds will after once again have to acquire permission from their parents to have an abortion.

The bill, which need to be accepted by parliament, has been vigorously opposed by most opposition parties and women’s groups across the country.

Gallardon’s ruling Common party has constantly sided heavily with the Catholic church on moral and social issues.
