Allergy season: 8 powerful Herbal Treatments for Allergy Relief

It is that time of the year again. Time for sneezing, watery eyes, congested sinuses, itching, and headaches. Allergy season is here, and millions of people are going to turn to Claritin, Zyrtec, Benadryl and other dangerous medicines to get relief from their symptoms. Allergies are one the most common chronic conditions worldwide. In Fact,

  • Nasal allergies affect approximately 50 million people in the United States.

  • Allergies are increasing. They affect around 30% of adults and 40% of children.

  • Allergy disorder and asthma is the fifth leading chronic disease in the U.S.. And it is the third most frequent chronic condition in children under 18 years old.

An allergic response occurs in the immune system. If you experience an allergy, your immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance (allergens such as pollen, dust, pet dander and mold) as an intruder. The immune system exaggerates to the allergen by creating IgE antibodies. These antibodies progress to your cells that release histamine and other substances, resulting in an allergic reaction. A common condition for seasonal allergies is Allergic Rhinitis also called Hay Fever. Pollen is the most common allergen. It causes symptoms such as a stuffy and itchy nose, sneezing, runny nose, watery and itchy eyes. In severe cases, allergies may also trigger symptoms of asthma. Allergic rhinitis can be both seasonal and perennial.

Most doctors would prescribe you antihistamines to help reduce symptoms. Antihistamines work by blocking histamine. By blocking histamine and keeping it from binding to receptors, antihistamines inhibit these symptoms. While antihistamines can be quite efficient at managing your symptoms, there have a plenty of possible side effects and issues. Some of the most common are drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, sore throat, nausea and more. Moreover, and most importantly, they do not stop the problem from occurring in the first place; they just mask the symptoms.

Luckily, there are natural alternatives like eating your antihistamines in the form of healthy herbs, spices and vitamins. Moreover, some of the natural alternatives can even address the root cause and not only mask your symptoms. If you like this article, please follow my work on my FB page (contacts below article).

And now let’s take a look at top 8 herbal remedies for seasonal allergies:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has strong anti-histamine action and detoxifies unknown substances invading your body. As a natural antihistamine, Vitamin C works by suppressing the molecular structure of histamine, thereby limiting the amount of histamine in your blood.

Preliminary research implies it might help reduce allergy symptoms. For example, a study published in the European Respiratory Journal discovered that eating fruits high in Vitamin C helped to lessen asthma symptoms in 8-year-olds subjects. Another study found evidence to confirm the role of Vitamin C supplementation in adults who experienced allergic rhinitis.

It is also recommended to take bioflavonoids (for example in rose hips) together with Vitamin C, which strengthens the effect.

How to take:

Tips: I am not a big fan of synthetic Vitamin C as ascorbic acid. Therefore I recommend natural forms such as Rose Hips or Camu Camu; another good choice is Liposomal Vitamin C made from sodium ascorbate. Liposomal vitamin C passes through the digestive barrier and delivers the nutrient directly to the bloodstream. This method has a much higher absorption rate with over 90% of the cells being soaked in vitamin C (oral vitamin C intake has a 20% absorption rate). Some experts even suggest that liposomal vitamin C may be even superior to IV vitamin C.

Dosing: Typical dosages can be up to 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C with Bioflavonoids (such as Quercetin) three times a day. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, so any surplus that the body does not need will be flushed out through the urine. However, higher doses may cause GI distress.

Butterbur

Butterbur is used with success for seasonal allergies, migraines, and asthma and several scientific papers back this up. Studies show that an extract of butterbur is just as effective at alleviating nasal symptoms as popular prescription antihistamines. Butterbur contains a number of substances such as petasin and isopetasin, which have analgesic and antispasmodic properties. It reduces inflammation by reducing secretion of histamine and leukotrienes by immune cells.

Several scientific studies indicate it can indeed help with allergic rhinitis. One extensive study of over a hundred people with hay fever found that an extract of butterbur was as effective as Zyrtec. Another medical study compared butterbur to Allegra with similar findings.

Conclusions of some other studies:

  • Butterbur is efficient and safe therapy for the treatment of asthma.

  • It is useful for the treatment for occasional allergic rhinitis symptoms and is very well tolerated.

  • Butterbur is as effective as fexofenadine in relieving nasal symptoms in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis (a study involving 330 people!)

  • It presents protection against chemically-induced nasal responsiveness in seasonal allergic rhinitis.

”In a study administered in four Swiss and German general medicine and allergy clinics, 125 hay fever patients were divided into two groups. One received butterbur root extract; the other, Zyrtec. After two weeks of the test treatment, the butterbur and Zyrtec were equally efficient at relieving the usual distress and lack of energy often accompanied with spring and seasonal allergies, says study author Andreas Schapowal, MD, a Swiss ear, nose, and throat surgeon. In the following study, Schapowal found that treatment with butterbur root extract also decreased nasal allergy symptoms, such as itching, sneezing, congestion and runny nose, but also watery eyes.”

How to take:

Tips:  Low-quality butterbur may contain potentially harmful liver-toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Look for quality PA-free butterbur such as butterbur root extract Petadolex or any other extract from a quality well-known manufacturer.

Dosing: Trials in a migraine, allergic rhinitis, and asthma have used butterbur extracts in dosages ranging from 50 to 100 mg twice daily. Doses up to 500 mg per day seems safe.

Quercetin

Another compound is Quercetin, which is one of the most powerful flavonoids on the planet. Quercetin can help allergy symptoms because it stops immune cells from creating histamines, which can trigger those often terrible allergic reactions. In fact, it is so powerful that you may find Quercetin in some ancient Chinese herbal formulas designed to block allergies to certain foods such as peanuts.

Quercetin is a plant pigment that occurs in various plants and foods; such as red wine, capers, red onions, red grapes, quinoa, green tea, apples, berries, tomatoes, peppers, green leafy veggies, cruciferous vegetables, asparagus, legumes, and beans. Fruits with a dark red or blue color usually have the highest quercetin content. Quercetin is a very potent antioxidant; it lowers inflammation, supports your cardiovascular system, helps fight pain, and also shows some promise as an anti-cancer compound and more. You can obtain quercetin from the foods above, or you can ingest it in a supplement form, a popular combination is quercetin-bromelain, which I use as well, and it is very effective for allergies and sinus problems amongst other benefits.

Research show that quercetin is comparable at fighting allergies as some prescription medications, and again with little to no side effects. It hinders the release of histamine that is responsible for the inflammation. In test tubes, it effectively stops the production and release of histamine, which creates allergy symptoms such as watery eyes and runny nose.

“Quercetin is the herbal equal to cromolyn sodium [in the over-the-counter spray NasalCrom],” “The evidence is encouraging.”

How to take:

Tips: You should use it as a long term remedy, about 4-6 weeks before allergy season to help prevent the symptoms. I recommend taking it together with bromelain.

Dosing: Though you can find Quercetin in certain foods, it is quite challenging to get the amount needed to help with allergies from food alone. Recommended dosage is usually 500mg three times a day for the most benefits.

Bromelain

Another allergy helper is a substance people usually do not normally know as an allergy aid. Nevertheless, it helps! Bromelain is a protein extract from the stems of pineapples, though the juice from the pineapple’s flesh contains bromelain as well. It is an enzyme composite and is often used in digestive enzyme supplement formulas. Bromelain’s other health benefits include sinus problems, asthma, allergies and joint pain. Bromelain is commonly marketed as a natural anti-inflammatory for ailments such as arthritis. It is one of the most popular natural supplements in Germany, where it is approved by the Commission E for the treatment of inflammation and swelling of the sinuses and nose due to injury or surgery. Some studies have found that bromelain is effective in reducing nasal swelling and thinning mucus, making it easier for people to breathe. It reduces phlegm in respiratory conditions such as sinusitis, bronchitis, and asthma.

Bromelain reduces the production of cytokines (inflammatory chemicals) and decreases the migration of inflammatory immune cells to sites of inflammation. Some studies suggest that bromelain helps modulate the entire immune system and that it can prevent allergies by targeting the root cause – an over-sensitive immune system.

”A trial involving 116 children found that bromelain was helpful in lessening symptoms of sinusitis, with those taking bromelain recovering significantly more quickly than those on placebo.”

How to take:

Tips: Bromelain enhances the absorption of Quercetin. I recommend taking them together.

Dosing: Allergy sufferers can take between 500 mg and 2,000 mg a day divided into two or three doses. Take on an empty stomach to maximize absorption (if taking for protein digestion, take with meals of course).

Turmeric

Yes, turmeric, ‘the cure it all‘ superstar : ) Turmeric is one the most well-researched plants in the world with hundreds of possible health benefits. There are thousands of scientific papers available on turmeric medicinal properties. Extensive research over the past few decades has shown that it plays a significant role in the prevention and treatment of numerous diseases. Curcumin, the main substance, is non-toxic and has a variety of therapeutic properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-cancer, also possess antimicrobial activities and numerous others. It helps in cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, metabolic, autoimmune diseases, but also diabetes and arthritis.

Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory. It eliminates excess mucus in the sinuses and aids in healing the respiratory tissue. Curcumin is helpful in bronchial asthma and other lung problems. It is beneficial for allergy sufferers as well. Many people report success with treating their allergies with turmeric tea.

Research has revealed that turmeric reduces inflammation by decreasing the histamine levels. ”(Curcumin inhibits Syk kinase-dependent signaling events in mast cells and might thus contribute to its antiallergic activity).” Another study says that Curcumin may help to increase antioxidant enzymes and decrease oxidative stress in allergic rhinitis. Researchers recommend curcumin to decrease oxidative stress in allergic rhinitis.

How to take:

Tips: Take turmeric with some healthy fat and black pepper to significantly increase absorption and bioavailability, which is otherwise very low. Quercetin and bromelain seem to enhance absorption too. Check more in my other article here http://www.naturalnewsblogs.com/increase-bioavailability-turmeric-2000-amazing-benefits/  ; Always buy from a well-known organic brand, because many turmeric powders may contain relatively high amounts of heavy metals and/or other contaminants. Caution: curcumin is a powerful yellow pigment, and it may permanently discolor surfaces.

Dosing: One or two teaspoons two times a day (1.5-3g) or 400-1500mg extract (95% curcuminoids) per day total. Dosages of curcumin up to 8g per day have been used – Higher doses may cause adverse GI effects.

Stinging Nettle

Many people swear by this old traditional medicine for allergies. Another superstar – Often used as an allergy treatment; this botanical is considered to be a useful histamine blocker as well as an inflammation fighter. There’s some evidence that using stinging nettle after the first sign of allergic signs can in fact help. However, despite its common use, there are not many studies backing up stinging nettle’s effectiveness as an allergy treatment. It is more a traditional folk medicine like ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar), but there are some studies. One small study implied that stinging nettle might help lessen symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

In a randomized, double-blind study, subjects with allergies reported fewer symptoms after one week use of freeze-dried nettle. Moreover, research from 2009 provides promising results for the first time:

”A mechanistic understanding of the role of nettle extracts in reducing allergic and other inflammatory responses. Nettle extract (Urtica dioica) affects key receptors and enzymes associated with allergic rhinitis. A nettle extract shows in vitro inhibition of several key inflammatory events that cause the symptoms of seasonal allergies.”

To sum up, Stinging nettle’s anti-inflammatory characteristics affect a variety of enzymes and key receptors in allergic reactions, inhibiting hay fever signs if taken when they first emerge.

How to take:

Tips: Be sure to choose extracts of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) leaf, not the root, which is used to treat prostate ailments. Go with a Freeze Dried extract or tincture; in fact, Herbalists often recommends Tincture for instant relief.

Dosing: Dosing depends on the potency of the extract; therefore use as directed. Freeze-dried nettle leaf 600 mg has been used in a clinical trial for allergic rhinitis.

MSM

This one is my favorite for allergies. For some reason, it is often forgotten. Sulfur is one of the most prominent composites in our bodies, just behind sodium and water. In fact, it is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body. Sulfur is involved in the production of energy in body cells, and the formation of antibodies. Scientist Dr. Jacob concluded that the sulfur in MSM, called sulfonyl, is as safe and as important as vitamin C in our diet, unlike the bad sulfurs: sulfas, sulfites, sulfates, and sulfides. MSM is a composite found naturally in foods such as cow’s milk, seafood, meat, veggies, and fruits. It has positive wide-spectrum effects, especially in maintaining healthy cell formation. MSM softens the cell walls, allowing foreign particles such as allergens, and any free-radicals to be flushed out of your system. It is used to help with number of conditions, including allergies.

MSM does not act as an anti-histamine compound that hinders histamine production. Its effectiveness is probably due to the capability to block the receptivity of histamine in the delicate tissue of the mucus membranes of nasal passages. This process prevents the histamine from forming the inflammation and swelling that usually accompanies allergies. Allergy sufferers that have taken MSM have reported back to their doctors that their pain levels were fifty percent less, or better, after using this supplement. Most patients report improvement and a reduction in pain and allergy symptoms within a week. Researchers believe that MSM works in a similar way to aspirin; to reduce pain and swelling due to inflammation.

”In addition, Dr. Mercola notes, MSM is 34% sulfur, which your body needs. Sulfur helps the body detoxify itself, and also helps build glutathione, an important antioxidant. MSM is very safe and you can take it at high doses, even if one’s diet is full of MSM-rich foods. Those of our staff who found a full relief took more than 2600 mg: up to 10,000 mg a day in divided doses. At these doses, it is often more beneficial to take MSM as a powder rather than a capsule, most of which contain 1,000 mg.’‘

”In one study, patients who received 2600 mg of MSM found their upper and total respiratory symptoms significantly reduced within 7 days, and improvement continued for the whole 30 days of that study (from the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine).

How to take:

Tips: Get the pure powder form, without any fillers and additives. Personally, I use organic sulphur Derived from pine lignans sourced from marine pine trees.

Dosing: Dr. Earl L. Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D., suggests allergy sufferers start using at least 6,000mg of MSM daily for three weeks in divided doses and reduce to 3,000mg per day after that. Also, he advises people drink more water and boost their intake of Vitamin C to lower histamine levels. The ideal dosage would depend on your body size. Sometimes, it takes up to 3 weeks to notice effects.

Neti Pot / Saline Rinse:

This one is not any herb or supplement, but it is so helpful that it should be on the list too.
The simple theory is that you use a Neti Pot filled with a saline solution to clean out the sinuses of allergens and irritations. Either use a pre-made sterile saline rinse or make your own by dissolving one teaspoon of Himalayan salt (or sea salt) in a cup of boiled distilled water. Let it cool and put in your Neti Pot. Pour through one nostril and let it flow out the other, then switch sides.

VIDEO and INSTRUCTIONS: https://www.himalayaninstitute.org/about/press/neti-pot/
CAUTION: You need to use distilled water, never use an unboiled tap water !!
TIP: I also add a drop or two of oregano oil, a teaspoon of coconut oil, and some MSM, but just salt rinse will do.

More Quick Tips:

Probiotics – it all starts in your gut, your allergies may simply be the result of an imbalance in your gut where your immune system exists. Therefore, proper diet and plenty od probiotics are essential for your allergies and health in general. Additionally, one small study suggests that L. acidophilus, a type of “friendly” bacteria, might help reduce allergic reaction to pollen. Moreover, new research links the presence of beneficial bacteria in the gut with reduced incidence of allergies.

Nasal Sprays and Eye,Ear Drops – Natural nasal sprays offers relief as well, I recommend nasal spray with GSE or silver, for eye drops: get natural or homeopathic. If you have itchy ears try mullein-garlic oil ear drops.

Diet and Vitamins – processed foods, junk foods, hydrogenated oils, white flour, sugar, high salt intake, preservatives, msg, artificial sweeteners, diet drinks and many other poor food choices are harmful to your health, and all of these can worsen your allergies or even creating them. Get adequate levels of vitamin D, B and eat plenty of veggies. Switching to a healthy anti-inflammatory diet, removing all toxic foods and toxins from your home, drinking raw vegetable juices and leading a healthy lifestyle (no alcohol, no smoking, reducing stress) in general are crucial steps.

Superfoods – some superfoods like Spirulina stops the release of histamine, which contributes to symptoms of allergic rhinitis, thus may help protect against harmful allergic reactions. Another beneficiary superfood for allergy sufferers is medicinal mushroom Reishi.

Other Helpful Herbs for Sinuses, Allergies and Lungs – Astragalus Root, Andrographis, GSE, Horseradish, Horehound, GoldenRod, Rosmarinic acid, Timothy Grass extract, Tinospora cordifolia, Perilla, Pycnogenol, Garlic, Ginger and NAC (N-Acetyl L-Cysteine: reduces the viscosity of mucus and clears your lungs).

Essential Oils / Steaming – especially steaming with oils like peppermint and eucalyptus can clear up your sinuses and relieve your allergy symptoms.

Air purifier – quality air purifier such as IQ AIR can remove significant percent of allergen particles in your home. For heavy allergy sufferers it is a big help to get a quality purifier with real HEPA filter and which does not create ozone.

Homeopathics and other Home Remedies – such as Apple Cider Vinegar, raw honey, and certain herbal teas may help too; you may want to try some homeopathic formulas as well, I found some to be quite effective.

Safety, Side Effects:

Any of these herbs can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.
Butterbur may interact with some medications that are processed by the liver. Also, it can cause stomach upset, headache, and minor drowsiness. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children should not take butterbur.
Do not take Stinging Nettle without talking to your doctor first if you have diabetes or if you take blood pressure medication, blood thinners, or diuretics. Not suitable for pregnant women.
Turmeric 1, 2
Bromelain has a blood-thining action, and some people are allergic to pineapple products.
Quercetin in higher doses may interfere with some medications.

When you add any of these herbs to your diet in any way, start small and monitor your body’s response. As always, consult a medical professional or qualified herbalist before adding a powerful new components like this to your herbal regimen. In fact, It would be best to work with a natural medicine practitioner who is well-educated on using herbal medicine. It is especially important if you have any medical condition, taking any medications or if you are a pregnant or breastfeeding woman; and if you plan to start giving herbs to your kids.

Final Words:

These natural treatments often work best if started early in the season before pollen counts become too high. As you can see, we do not need big pharma’s antihistamines. Some of these herbs not only helps with the symptoms but actually address the root cause. Don’t forget that healthy lifestyle and your diet contributes a lot. Personally, before my spring allergies occur, I start to user nettle leaf, butterbur, quercetin with bromelain, Andrographis and I up my dosages of vitamin C, MSM and turmeric and my symptoms are close to zero. I wish you a symptom-free allergic season. Finally, Don’t forget to check my other articles on my FB page (contacts below).

Broccoli Sprouts: Nature’s Most Powerful Cancer-Fighting Food

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli are very rich in nutrients, including several carotenoids; vitamins E, C, and K; folate; and minerals. They also are an excellent fiber source. A high consumption of cruciferous vegetables has been linked with a decreased risk of cancer.

Broccoli contains elements known as glucosinolates, which are sulfur-containing chemicals. During chewing and digestion, the glucosinolates are broken down to form active composites such as indoles and isothiocyanates. An indole and isothiocyanate (sulforaphane) have been extensively studied for their anticancer effects.

Indoles and isothiocyanates hinder the growth of cancer in several organs in rodents, such as the bladder, colon, breast, liver, stomach, and lung.

Studies in animals and experiments with laboratory cells have recognized several possible methods in which these composites may help prevent and fight cancer. They :

    • Help inactivate carcinogens.

    • Kills cancer stem cells.

    • Defend cells from DNA damage.

    • Have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects.

    • Are powerful anti-inflammatory agents.

    • Inhibit metastasis (tumor cell migration).

    • Repress tumor blood vessel formation.

If you like this article, please follow my work on my FB page (contacts below article).

And now let’s take a look why Broccoli Sprouts are so powerful in fighting and preventing cancer:

Several studies have established broccoli as an anti-cancer vegetable. Broccoli can prevent and help with many health issues. In fact, many studies confirm not only the anti-cancer properties but also to help with cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, asthma, and inflammatory diseases.

The researchers attempted to determine how much Broccoli one would have to eat to produce a significant level of protection against cancer. They state that one would have to eat about two pounds of Broccoli a week to reduce, for example, the risk of colon cancer by about 50%. However, fresh Broccoli sprouts offer an alternative. We can eat 10 to 100 times lower quantities and still get the main benefits.

Broccoli sprouts contain a substance called sulforaphane which is one of the most powerful antioxidants and detoxification elements. ”Paul Talalay, M.D., of Johns Hopkins University isolated the cancer-fighting phytochemical sulforaphane. He discovered that sprouting delivers more sulforaphane than broccoli alone with 20 to 50 times the anti-cancer potential using the right strain of broccoli sprouting seeds.” Just 5 grams of sprouts contain concentrations of the compound glucoraphanin equivalent to that found in 150 grams of mature Broccoli.

Broccoli sprouts are the most hopeful at preventing and killing cancer. The best thing about sulforaphane is that it kills cancer cells, but seems to have minimal impact on healthy cells. It also intensifies the efficiency of anti-cancer drugs.

Detoxify Environmental Pollutants

Johns Hopkins researchers have come up with yet another reason to eat broccoli sprouts. A clinical trial comprising almost 300 men and women living in one of China’s most polluted regions found that daily consumption of a half-cup of broccoli sprouts helped rid their bodies of cancer-causing contaminants.
Broccoli sprouts are a source of glucoraphanin, which produces sulforaphane when chewed or swallowed. That compound stimulates the body’s ability to detoxify from various pollutants…

“This study points to a frugal, simple and safe means that can be taken by individuals to possibly reduce some of the long-term health risks associated with air pollution,” noted Thomas Kensler, a professor at Johns Hopkins.”

Autism Help

Furthermore, recently, researchers are extensively studying Broccoli Sprouts which Shows Promise in Treating Autism (Hopkins, 2014).

The researchers say: “Many of those who took a daily dose of the compound sulforaphane experienced substantial improvements in their social interaction and verbal communication, along with decreases in repetitive, ritualistic behaviors, compared to those who received a placebo.”

“We believe that this may be preliminary evidence for the first treatment for autism that improves symptoms by apparently correcting some of the underlying cellular problems,” says Paul Talalay, M.D., professor of pharmacology and molecular sciences, who has researched these vegetable compounds for the past 25 years.

Sulforaphane also possesses anti-diabetic and antimicrobial properties. In addition, There are hundreds of scientific papers on Sulforaphane alone and some of the other benefits are:

More Main Uses and Benefits of Sulforaphane:

  • Supports Detoxification – Sulforaphane boosts the antioxidant capacity of cells.

  • Improves Diabetes – Broccoli sprouts improve many parameters in diabetes. In fact, Sulforaphane may prevent nephropathy, diabetes-induced fibrosis, and vascular complications. Also, Broccoli sprouts increased blood antioxidant capacity and HDL cholesterol and reduced oxidative stress, triglycerides, insulin, insulin resistance, and CRP.

  • Lowers Cholesterol – In 12 subjects, ingesting 100g of fresh broccoli sprouts for 1 week lowered total and LDL cholesterol, and raised HDL cholesterol too.

  • Prevents and Fights Heart and Cardiovascular Diseases – Both sulforaphane and broccoli sprouts decrease blood pressure in hypertensive rats. In fact, a diet rich in Brassica vegetables lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases, according to studies.

  • Antiviral and Combats Bacteria and Fungi – Sulforaphane manifests significant antiviral activity against influenza, HIV, Epstein-Barr virus and also hepatitis C. Furthermore, In one study, 23 out of 28 tested bacterial and fungal species were suppressed by sulforaphane.

  • Protects the Skin – Sulforaphane provides protection against UVA and UVB inflammation, sunburn, and also skin damage.

  • Protects the Brain and Restores Cognitive Function – It reduces brain inflammation in several animal models of pathogen-induced neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative disease. In addition, It improves cognitive performance and prevents memory impairment.

  • Reduces Health Damage from Pollution – Sulforaphane helps the body detoxify airborne pollutants, pesticides, and heavy metals too.

Other Benefits:

  • May Help with Parkinson’s Disease and also Alzheimer’s

  • Effective against H. pylori – Broccoli sprouts inhibit the growth of H. pylori.

  • Enhances Liver Function – Broccoli sprouts improved liver function (In men with fatty liver).

  • Helpful in Airway Inflammation and Asthma – Sulforaphane has beneficial effects in animals with asthma and also airway inflammation.

  • Combats Inflammation caused by Autoimmune disorders – Sulforaphane also reduces autoimmune inflammation, which is helpful in conditions like MS.

  • Arthritis – In mice, Sulforaphane reduced the severity of arthritis.

  • Protect the Kidneys – It defends against kidney damage in rodents.

  • Protects the Eyes – Sulforaphane protects human retinal cells from UVA light-induced damage. Also, it protects human lens cells against oxidative stress and may delay the onset of cataracts.

  • Boosts the Immune System – Sulforaphane enhances bacterial clearance and also enhances the activity of natural killer cells (NK cells) in mice.

  • Sulforaphane is a strong anti-Inflammatory agent.

Tips and How to Sprout:

Learning how to grow quality Broccoli Sprouts for the lowest cost is one of the best things you can do for your health. Avoid Broccoli sprout contamination by sprouting your own. In addition, Avoid GMO seeds and get organic from a reputable brand.

” First of all, Get your organic sprouting seeds.
1) Place the seeds into the jar with three times the amount of purified water.
2) Let it sit for around six hours, then tip the jar carefully to avoid damaging seeds and sprouts to pour out the water. Rinse with fresh water and drain again.
3) Keep the jar propped at a downward angle to allow for more drainage. Keep away from heat and direct sunlight.
4) This is continued until the jar begins getting filled with fresh sprouts. Then strong indirect sunlight is encouraged.
5) After five days usually, broccoli sprouts are ready and should be refrigerated.”
by @healthimpactnews

If you do not want to sprout your seeds, you can get standardized supplements with Sulforaphane to get the mentioned benefits or buying fresh broccoli sprouts from reputace manufacturers.

Safety, Side Effects, and Dosing:

Hypothyroidism concerns: According to the research, it would take a large volume of cruciferous vegetables to cause hypothyroidism, and it seems that there is only a risk if someone also has an iodine deficiency.
Liver toxicity: There is a single case report after drinking large volumes of broccoli juice for four weeks (800 ml/day). So keep in mind that any herb and supplement, in excess, may cause more harm than good.
Broccoli sprouts may cause low blood pressure.
Caution: As with alfalfa sprouts, broccoli sprouts may carry bacteria that may cause sickness when ingested. Broccoli sprouts should be purchased from reliable manufacturers.

Dosing: In clinical trials, 50-100g of broccoli sprouts daily have been used. For preventing cancer, eating a half cup of broccoli sprouts three times weekly has been recommended. And If using extracts, use as directed.

Conclusion:

Are we getting enough cruciferous vegetables in our diet?  For most of us, the answer is no. With broccoli sprouts, you can see how easy it can be to get the highest benefits and not needing to eat that much. As mentioned, fresh broccoli sprouts are much more potent than mature broccoli, allowing you to eat far less. I hope I have convinced you to start sprouting your own broccoli seeds and adding it to your diet; it is one of the best things you can do for your health. The Charlie Gard case is a sad reminder that the law is the preserve of the powerful | Anne Perkins

The law says the best interests of the child always come first. But deciding what those are can be a matter of anguished contention. Connie Yates and Chris Gard, the parents of Charlie Gard, the little boy born with an extremely rare form of mitochondrial mutation, were told by a judge yesterday that it was not in their son’s best interests for him to be taken to the US for experimental treatment, and they think the judge was wrong.

The judge, Mr Justice Francis, who told doctors at Great Ormond Street that they could withdraw all but palliative care, was to all intents and purposes delivering a death sentence. He knew that. They knew that.

What was extraordinary is that the state – our representative in court – says that although it rightly felt it had a duty to protect Charlie, it had no role in making sure that his parents’ view of what was in his interest was properly represented. Yates and Gard were not entitled to legal aid. The judge told the court that he found this “remarkable”. This is not the sort of thing judges normally say.

Charlie Gard

‘The judge…was to all intent and purposes delivering a death sentence. He knew that.’ Photograph: Family handout/PA

Fortunately for the parents, they found a legal team through the solicitors Bindmans, who were prepared to work for free. They did not end up, as people in private law cases often do, faced with a choice between representing themselves or not going to court at all. It is all the more absurd that had it been a question of whether Charlie should be taken into care – a life-changing but not a life-threatening decision – the state would have paid for their lawyers. That is because the case would have involved a local authority, another public body. Yet for Charlie’s parents, it would be hard to distinguish between a well-funded public body like a council, and another – the NHS.

This is not about the rights and wrongs of this heart-rending case, where Charlie’s parents wanted to overrule the doctors who felt it would be painful and futile, and take their son to the US in the very remote hope that an entirely untested treatment might help him. But it is a reminder of the way that in other courts the state is skewing the balance of justice in its own interests. The law is becoming the preserve of the powerful.

The Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas said as much more than a year ago when he used his annual report to highlight the injustice of a system where the law was unaffordable to all but the rich. He repeated the criticism in his report for 2016: “A properly funded justice system is a core function of the state”, a role that included “holding the democratic government to account and ensuring it acts fairly and according to law”.

It is shocking to discover that even in a case where the court is having to decide a matter that is literally a choice between life and death, there is no legal aid. But it is only the most shocking of a long list of areas where it is no longer possible to get state help to challenge a perceived injustice: the list includes housing, welfare, debt, immigration, medical negligence and family law cases, unless they involve domestic violence. There are prohibitive charges on employment tribunals, which even the Ministry of Justice now acknowledges as creating unintended consequences. A 500% increase in fees for immigration and asylum appeals was only rescinded after a nationwide campaign.

This is the work of Chris Grayling, the most disastrous justice secretary yet appointed, who was in the post between 2012 and 2015. With apparently only the haziest grasp of how access to justice is a cornerstone of the constitution, in his three years as minister he took a machete to the whole system. His successors have been trying to patch it up ever since.

Excluding citizens from access to the law is a process of disempowerment. That is bad enough. What is worse still is that it enhances the lethal sense of government and its agencies that they will not be held to account. Lawyers are not often regarded as heroes of society. But a just society can’t do without them.

Do You Know Which Are The 3 Most Powerful Healing Essential Oils?

A few years ago I became interested in the healing power of essential oils and quickly found a few favorites. Those are; oregano oil, black seed oil, and magnesium oil.

Essential oils are more than delicious smelling oils. These wildly healthful plant extracts can help you heal, maintain good body energy balances and can even be used, with caution, for your pets.

Essential oils are very potent, and the utmost care and attention should be applied when using and handling these products.

Some oils can be made simply and at home, but others need the distillation process to fully extract all their potent properties. And yes, if you’re really keen, you can purchase a distillation kit for around $ 400. To make your own, you will need a LOT of the plant material to start with. Always make sure to start with the very highest quality plant material, to ensure the best oils coming out the other end of the process.

If you cannot make your own or don’t have access to the necessary plant material, there are plenty of retailers that are happy to sell you certified organic essential oils.

These highly potent oils are usually used for their healing properties. However, some just smell so good, that you will want to wear them as a perfume!

Modern science has finally caught up with the use of essential oils in some pharmaceuticals. For example, eucalyptus essential oil is used in preparations to help relieve sore throats and congestive coughs. Also, many essential oils are used in the ancient art of aromatherapy.

Oregano Oil

Is a powerful antibacterial, antiviral, anti-parasitic and anti-fungal oil that can help fight off infections. Personally, I love oregano oil for relieving tooth ache and keeping colds and flu at bay. As soon as I feel a little tickle in the throat, I start taking 3 x 3 drops per day. Caution: when first using this oil, make sure you start with only 1 x 3 drops per day. It’s really strong stuff!

Carvacrol is the main ingredient in oregano oil that makes it so powerful against many ailments. This substance is being evaluated in many scientific studies, and there are great results coming through. Carvacrol has been proven to kill cancer cells, supports a balanced blood sugar level and is effective in the fight against candida (see the end of the article for the link to the very long list of studies)

Black Seed Oil

This particular oil has been described as ‘the remedy for all ailments except death’ Now, while I can’t attest to the death part, I can tell you that this is another powerful oil, useful in relieving toothache. However, this oil has a side benefit that I didn’t count on. After taking this internally for just a few days, I noticed my facial wrinkles smoothing out. Wow, an excellent anti-aging effect!

Recent studies have shown that black seed oil (from the Nigella sativa plant) can combat super bugs that are fast becoming resistant to man-made antibiotics. Take that big pharma!

The fantastic anti-cancer properties of black seed oil are attributed to the active ingredient called thymoquinone. There has been a lot of interest from the scientific community in thymoquinone, for it’s potential as a cancer treatment. “Recent preclinical and clinical studies provide evidence that adoptive transfer of in vitro activated T cells can results in significant antitumor responses in vivo upon acquisition of certain survival and homing properties during in vitro activation.”

“Significant apoptosis” has been observed in vitro.

Apoptosis is a process of programmed cell death that occurs in multi cellular organisms. Biochemical events lead to characteristic cell changes (morphology) and death. In vitro means a process performed or taking place in a test tube, culture dish, or elsewhere outside a living organism.

In 2008 there was a study of 2.5ml x 2 daily of black seed oil, tested against atorvastatin 10 mg once a day and metformin 500 mg twice a day. The result? “The treatment group showed significant improvement concerning total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and fasting blood glucose.”

Magnesium Oil

This is called an oil, but it’s not. I’m not sure why the moniker of oil is attached to it because it’s quite a watery substance. Magnesium oil is mainly used topically with massage to relieve cramps. When we dehydrate, we not only lose water but also salts. Magnesium oil replaces some of these body salts, thus avoiding cramps in the first place.

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals, and it’s been mostly removed from our food supply. Since the 1950’s, up to 95% of magnesium is now not present in vegetables, grains, and pasta. No wonder we are all getting sick! I consider magnesium oil to be a ‘get it in ya NOW’ type supplement.

I love to use it before bed, rubbed into my legs, for a good nights sleep. This wonder oil is great to alleviate the suffering of migraines, restless leg syndrome, baths for eczema and psoriasis, to calm stress and hyperactivity, help with the pain of your lunar cycle, improve skin quality and even help with diabetic symptoms.

How To Choose The Highest Quality Essential Oils

When choosing a supplier for your essential oils, please ensure you find certified organic oils. Organic certification is different in each country. However, there are international standards too. It’s a minefield of information, but, if you just stick to certified organic labels, then you will be getting the highest quality available.

Organic certified essential oils are always more expensive. However, this shows the true cost of growing high quality, chemical free products. It’s all the costs of complying to certification that raise the prices so high. My hot tip is to learn how to grow and make your own oils!

Organic farming is also often performed on a much smaller scale, utilizing farm management practices which do not harm the environment, wildlife or you. That’s why I don’t care what the price is; the quality is what counts.

Essential oils are called ‘essential’ for a reason. Get some in your natural health cabinet today!

Gay men are battling a demon more powerful than HIV – and it’s hidden| Owen Jones

It had been three years since I’d met up with my first boyfriend – let’s call him Steven. When he walked into a Brixton pub in June, it was a shock. I’d first met him well over a decade ago, and back then he was sporty, a bit of a health freak: other than the usual occasional student alcohol binge, relatively strait-laced. This Steven had dilated pupils, red marks on his arms, and his head jerked erratically as he spoke manically. He was addicted to crystal meth, and had an abusive relationship with other drugs and alcohol.

Steven’s story is all too revealing about a silent health crisis afflicting gay men. The words “health crisis” in conjunction with “gay men” normally conjures up the HIV catastrophe that decimated the gay and bisexual community in the 1980s. In the developed world, HIV is no longer the death sentence it once was, although the treatment can cause health complications, and in the UK an estimated 6,500 men who have sex with men live with undiagnosed infections. A far greater menace is mental distress – impossible to disentangle from a society riddled with homophobia – and the drug and alcohol abuse that can follow.

Steven has been clean for 66 days, has enthusiastically taken to treatment and volunteers at his local support group. But why – like so many gay men – did he succumb to addiction? When Steven came out, at the age of 15 years old, his parents drove him to a pseudo-clinic run by fundamentalist Christians to be cured of his homosexuality. But he doesn’t speak with bitterness. “I know they love me and they were doing the best they could,” he says. “They didn’t know what I needed, so they looked to their own experience, a culture that taught that if you were gay it was a disaster. You’d be lonely, you’d get Aids, you’d find life difficult. They felt they were trying to support me.”

The problem was far broader than his family, though. Coming out as a teenager in the early 00s meant almost inevitable bullying at school, a lack of awareness of where to find positive role models, and homophobic voices amplified by the media. “Taken together, it meant I was isolated and thought that I was the problem.” Internalising that shame at such a young age inflicts long-term damage – and explains much of his current turmoil.

It’s an issue covered by the former Attitude editor Matthew Todd in his utterly brilliant – and disturbing – recent book Straight Jacket. He identifies a number of problems that most gay men, if they were honest, would at least recognise: “Disproportionately high levels of depression, self-harm and suicide; not uncommon problems with emotional intimacy … and now a small but significant subculture of men who are using, some injecting, seriously dangerous drugs, which despite accusations of hysteria from the gatekeepers of the gay PR machine, are killing too many people.” He lists a disturbing number of gay friends, acquaintances and people in the public eye who struggled with addictions and took their own lives.

The statistics are indeed alarming. According to Stonewall research in 2014, 52% of young LGBT people report they have, at some point, self-harmed; a staggering 44% have considered suicide; and 42% have sought medical help for mental distress. Alcohol and drug abuse are often damaging forms of self-medication to deal with this underlying distress. A recent study by the LGBT Foundation found that drug use among LGB people is seven times higher than the general population, binge drinking is twice as common among gay and bisexual men, and substance dependency is significantly higher.

Why? As Todd puts it: “It is a shame with which we were saddled as children, to which we continue to be culturally subjected.” The problem gay people have isn’t their sexuality, but rather society’s attitude to it. It is “our experience of growing up in a society that still does not fully accept that people can be anything other than heterosexual and cisgendered [born into the physical gender you feel you are]”. There’s the weight of centuries of hatred and bigotry, with legally enforced discrimination only dismantled in very recent times. All gay and bisexual men – as well as women and trans people – grow up hearing homophobic and transphobic abuse. “Gay” is a word used in the playground as the repository for all that is bad. Popular films and TV programmes have largely lacked sympathetic, well-rounded LGBT characters, often resorting to crude homophobic tropes. Even the inability to hold hands with someone you love in almost any public space is a reminder that a depressingly large chunk of the population still rejects you. Coming out – a process that isn’t a one-off, but a wearingly repetitive event in different contexts – involves constant stress. And for those who think it’s all inevitably getting better, since the EU referendum, there’s been a 147% rise in homophobic hate crimes.

Society has damaged – and continues to damage – LGBT people. That’s not to overstate the case (and focusing on my experience as a gay man): being gay does not mean being in a state of misery. As Todd puts it, there are lots of contented, successful gay people, and progress in recent times has been astonishing, including equal marriage. Coming out is like coming up for air for the vast majority of LGBT people: the alternative is so much more miserable. But this is a health crisis that is not spoken about enough: the toxic combination of mental distress, drugs and alcohol abuse.

It is a crisis that is not being dealt with. Despite the government’s promises to grant mental and physical health parity of esteem, last year Mind reported an 8% real terms drop in mental health services funding since 2010. Cuts, according to health thinktank the King’s Fund, have contributed to “widespread evidence of poor-quality care”. Many LGBT services in particular have been devastated: as the TUC pointed out in 2014, they were “already coping on a shoestring. Some have faced drops in up to 50%.”

Because of our internalised shame, LGBT people often find it difficult to talk about the problems we collectively face. The danger is always of reinforcing the damaging stereotypes that have already caused so much distress. But we have to confront a crisis that is damaging health and taking people’s lives. Society has to take responsibility, too: it is its continued refusal to treat LGBT people as equals that is causing so much pain. If Theresa May’s government really does want to prove it isn’t just a pound-shop Ukip tribute band, perhaps it should take this issue seriously and review David Cameron’s cuts. The lives of LGBT people depend on it.

In the UK, the Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123. In the US, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline is 1-800-273-8255. In Australia, the crisis support service Lifeline is on 13 11 14. Hotlines in other countries can be found here

NHS leadership needs to give staff a powerful voice in any system change

Inevitably the NHS reform drive got caught up in the party conference crossfire. Diane Abbott, in her last few days as shadow health secretary, attempted to rebrand sustainability and transformation plans (STPs) as “secret Tory plans”, while prime minister Theresa May made the ludicrous assertion that the government had given the NHS “more than its leaders asked for”, conjuring up an image of NHS England trying to work out what to do with all the extra cash.

But clinicians as well as politicians are becoming increasingly vocal on the current round of reform. The Royal College of GPs is getting angry over the obsessive focus on sorting out hospital deficits rather than transforming care. At their annual conference this week, college chair Maureen Baker accurately pointed out that if there is insufficient investment in general practice, system transformation simply won’t happen, and the whole process will have been in vain.

NHS England has expressed concern about the lack of clinical involvement in drawing up local plans. At the recent NHS Expo, chief nursing officer Professor Jane Cummings revealed that she had had “mixed responses” when pushing for nurses to have a greater role in STPs, and urged healthcare professionals to make their voices heard.

The RCN backs the drive for patients to increasingly manage their own care, but has warned that the only way to do that effectively is to listen to patients and clinicians. In many areas this did not happen before the plans were submitted to NHS England.

The extraordinary speed with which the plans are being put together is causing concern. Last week Julia Simon, who has just finished as the head of commissioning policy at NHS England, went so far as to claim there were “a lot of lies in the system about the … benefits that will be delivered; it’s just a construct, not a reality”. She described the speed as “mad” and “shameful”.

NHS England is rushing the process for a reason. As NHS Improvement chief executive Jim Mackey made clear from his first days in the job, it would be a calamitous failure for the NHS to push the Department of Health over its parliamentary spending limit. The possible consequences are far greater than simply NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens losing his job; it could lead to a fundamental change in the relationship between frontline health services and government.

Despite Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s determination to keep a personal grip on the health service, and despite the numerous weaknesses in the current structure, the NHS does at least have a meaningful degree of autonomy from direct Whitehall control. Busting the spending limit runs the serious risk that this would be reversed, to the detriment of the whole system.

But NHS England and NHS improvement need to balance the need for quick action to stabilise the finances with acceptance that the only way to deliver the transformation they seek is for it to be led by clinicians as much as managers.

STPs are focused on structures and process, but as thousands of pages of visions and plans that have come to little over the years demonstrate, documents like these are ultimately worthless without clinical buy-in and leadership, because they all depend on clinicians taking different decisions with their patients on the best way forward.

The frenetic pace of the STP process gives the erroneous impression that, at least for the most advanced areas, it will all be over by Christmas. In reality, this is just the beginning of many years of work to change the culture of the entire health and care system.

Once the immediate panic over getting financial plans in place has subsided, the NHS leadership needs to focus relentlessly on giving staff a powerful voice in system change. Clinicians need to be empowered and supported in making the improvements that they know are needed, while also being challenged to develop their thinking around crucial areas such as building services around the needs of the patients rather than the institution.

Either clinicians start to lead this, or it will fail.
