Allergy season: 8 powerful Herbal Treatments for Allergy Relief

It is that time of the year again. Time for sneezing, watery eyes, congested sinuses, itching, and headaches. Allergy season is here, and millions of people are going to turn to Claritin, Zyrtec, Benadryl and other dangerous medicines to get relief from their symptoms. Allergies are one the most common chronic conditions worldwide. In Fact,

  • Nasal allergies affect approximately 50 million people in the United States.

  • Allergies are increasing. They affect around 30% of adults and 40% of children.

  • Allergy disorder and asthma is the fifth leading chronic disease in the U.S.. And it is the third most frequent chronic condition in children under 18 years old.

An allergic response occurs in the immune system. If you experience an allergy, your immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance (allergens such as pollen, dust, pet dander and mold) as an intruder. The immune system exaggerates to the allergen by creating IgE antibodies. These antibodies progress to your cells that release histamine and other substances, resulting in an allergic reaction. A common condition for seasonal allergies is Allergic Rhinitis also called Hay Fever. Pollen is the most common allergen. It causes symptoms such as a stuffy and itchy nose, sneezing, runny nose, watery and itchy eyes. In severe cases, allergies may also trigger symptoms of asthma. Allergic rhinitis can be both seasonal and perennial.

Most doctors would prescribe you antihistamines to help reduce symptoms. Antihistamines work by blocking histamine. By blocking histamine and keeping it from binding to receptors, antihistamines inhibit these symptoms. While antihistamines can be quite efficient at managing your symptoms, there have a plenty of possible side effects and issues. Some of the most common are drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, sore throat, nausea and more. Moreover, and most importantly, they do not stop the problem from occurring in the first place; they just mask the symptoms.

Luckily, there are natural alternatives like eating your antihistamines in the form of healthy herbs, spices and vitamins. Moreover, some of the natural alternatives can even address the root cause and not only mask your symptoms. If you like this article, please follow my work on my FB page (contacts below article).

And now let’s take a look at top 8 herbal remedies for seasonal allergies:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has strong anti-histamine action and detoxifies unknown substances invading your body. As a natural antihistamine, Vitamin C works by suppressing the molecular structure of histamine, thereby limiting the amount of histamine in your blood.

Preliminary research implies it might help reduce allergy symptoms. For example, a study published in the European Respiratory Journal discovered that eating fruits high in Vitamin C helped to lessen asthma symptoms in 8-year-olds subjects. Another study found evidence to confirm the role of Vitamin C supplementation in adults who experienced allergic rhinitis.

It is also recommended to take bioflavonoids (for example in rose hips) together with Vitamin C, which strengthens the effect.

How to take:

Tips: I am not a big fan of synthetic Vitamin C as ascorbic acid. Therefore I recommend natural forms such as Rose Hips or Camu Camu; another good choice is Liposomal Vitamin C made from sodium ascorbate. Liposomal vitamin C passes through the digestive barrier and delivers the nutrient directly to the bloodstream. This method has a much higher absorption rate with over 90% of the cells being soaked in vitamin C (oral vitamin C intake has a 20% absorption rate). Some experts even suggest that liposomal vitamin C may be even superior to IV vitamin C.

Dosing: Typical dosages can be up to 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C with Bioflavonoids (such as Quercetin) three times a day. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, so any surplus that the body does not need will be flushed out through the urine. However, higher doses may cause GI distress.

Butterbur

Butterbur is used with success for seasonal allergies, migraines, and asthma and several scientific papers back this up. Studies show that an extract of butterbur is just as effective at alleviating nasal symptoms as popular prescription antihistamines. Butterbur contains a number of substances such as petasin and isopetasin, which have analgesic and antispasmodic properties. It reduces inflammation by reducing secretion of histamine and leukotrienes by immune cells.

Several scientific studies indicate it can indeed help with allergic rhinitis. One extensive study of over a hundred people with hay fever found that an extract of butterbur was as effective as Zyrtec. Another medical study compared butterbur to Allegra with similar findings.

Conclusions of some other studies:

  • Butterbur is efficient and safe therapy for the treatment of asthma.

  • It is useful for the treatment for occasional allergic rhinitis symptoms and is very well tolerated.

  • Butterbur is as effective as fexofenadine in relieving nasal symptoms in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis (a study involving 330 people!)

  • It presents protection against chemically-induced nasal responsiveness in seasonal allergic rhinitis.

”In a study administered in four Swiss and German general medicine and allergy clinics, 125 hay fever patients were divided into two groups. One received butterbur root extract; the other, Zyrtec. After two weeks of the test treatment, the butterbur and Zyrtec were equally efficient at relieving the usual distress and lack of energy often accompanied with spring and seasonal allergies, says study author Andreas Schapowal, MD, a Swiss ear, nose, and throat surgeon. In the following study, Schapowal found that treatment with butterbur root extract also decreased nasal allergy symptoms, such as itching, sneezing, congestion and runny nose, but also watery eyes.”

How to take:

Tips:  Low-quality butterbur may contain potentially harmful liver-toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Look for quality PA-free butterbur such as butterbur root extract Petadolex or any other extract from a quality well-known manufacturer.

Dosing: Trials in a migraine, allergic rhinitis, and asthma have used butterbur extracts in dosages ranging from 50 to 100 mg twice daily. Doses up to 500 mg per day seems safe.

Quercetin

Another compound is Quercetin, which is one of the most powerful flavonoids on the planet. Quercetin can help allergy symptoms because it stops immune cells from creating histamines, which can trigger those often terrible allergic reactions. In fact, it is so powerful that you may find Quercetin in some ancient Chinese herbal formulas designed to block allergies to certain foods such as peanuts.

Quercetin is a plant pigment that occurs in various plants and foods; such as red wine, capers, red onions, red grapes, quinoa, green tea, apples, berries, tomatoes, peppers, green leafy veggies, cruciferous vegetables, asparagus, legumes, and beans. Fruits with a dark red or blue color usually have the highest quercetin content. Quercetin is a very potent antioxidant; it lowers inflammation, supports your cardiovascular system, helps fight pain, and also shows some promise as an anti-cancer compound and more. You can obtain quercetin from the foods above, or you can ingest it in a supplement form, a popular combination is quercetin-bromelain, which I use as well, and it is very effective for allergies and sinus problems amongst other benefits.

Research show that quercetin is comparable at fighting allergies as some prescription medications, and again with little to no side effects. It hinders the release of histamine that is responsible for the inflammation. In test tubes, it effectively stops the production and release of histamine, which creates allergy symptoms such as watery eyes and runny nose.

“Quercetin is the herbal equal to cromolyn sodium [in the over-the-counter spray NasalCrom],” “The evidence is encouraging.”

How to take:

Tips: You should use it as a long term remedy, about 4-6 weeks before allergy season to help prevent the symptoms. I recommend taking it together with bromelain.

Dosing: Though you can find Quercetin in certain foods, it is quite challenging to get the amount needed to help with allergies from food alone. Recommended dosage is usually 500mg three times a day for the most benefits.

Bromelain

Another allergy helper is a substance people usually do not normally know as an allergy aid. Nevertheless, it helps! Bromelain is a protein extract from the stems of pineapples, though the juice from the pineapple’s flesh contains bromelain as well. It is an enzyme composite and is often used in digestive enzyme supplement formulas. Bromelain’s other health benefits include sinus problems, asthma, allergies and joint pain. Bromelain is commonly marketed as a natural anti-inflammatory for ailments such as arthritis. It is one of the most popular natural supplements in Germany, where it is approved by the Commission E for the treatment of inflammation and swelling of the sinuses and nose due to injury or surgery. Some studies have found that bromelain is effective in reducing nasal swelling and thinning mucus, making it easier for people to breathe. It reduces phlegm in respiratory conditions such as sinusitis, bronchitis, and asthma.

Bromelain reduces the production of cytokines (inflammatory chemicals) and decreases the migration of inflammatory immune cells to sites of inflammation. Some studies suggest that bromelain helps modulate the entire immune system and that it can prevent allergies by targeting the root cause – an over-sensitive immune system.

”A trial involving 116 children found that bromelain was helpful in lessening symptoms of sinusitis, with those taking bromelain recovering significantly more quickly than those on placebo.”

How to take:

Tips: Bromelain enhances the absorption of Quercetin. I recommend taking them together.

Dosing: Allergy sufferers can take between 500 mg and 2,000 mg a day divided into two or three doses. Take on an empty stomach to maximize absorption (if taking for protein digestion, take with meals of course).

Turmeric

Yes, turmeric, ‘the cure it all‘ superstar : ) Turmeric is one the most well-researched plants in the world with hundreds of possible health benefits. There are thousands of scientific papers available on turmeric medicinal properties. Extensive research over the past few decades has shown that it plays a significant role in the prevention and treatment of numerous diseases. Curcumin, the main substance, is non-toxic and has a variety of therapeutic properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-cancer, also possess antimicrobial activities and numerous others. It helps in cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, metabolic, autoimmune diseases, but also diabetes and arthritis.

Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory. It eliminates excess mucus in the sinuses and aids in healing the respiratory tissue. Curcumin is helpful in bronchial asthma and other lung problems. It is beneficial for allergy sufferers as well. Many people report success with treating their allergies with turmeric tea.

Research has revealed that turmeric reduces inflammation by decreasing the histamine levels. ”(Curcumin inhibits Syk kinase-dependent signaling events in mast cells and might thus contribute to its antiallergic activity).” Another study says that Curcumin may help to increase antioxidant enzymes and decrease oxidative stress in allergic rhinitis. Researchers recommend curcumin to decrease oxidative stress in allergic rhinitis.

How to take:

Tips: Take turmeric with some healthy fat and black pepper to significantly increase absorption and bioavailability, which is otherwise very low. Quercetin and bromelain seem to enhance absorption too. Check more in my other article here http://www.naturalnewsblogs.com/increase-bioavailability-turmeric-2000-amazing-benefits/  ; Always buy from a well-known organic brand, because many turmeric powders may contain relatively high amounts of heavy metals and/or other contaminants. Caution: curcumin is a powerful yellow pigment, and it may permanently discolor surfaces.

Dosing: One or two teaspoons two times a day (1.5-3g) or 400-1500mg extract (95% curcuminoids) per day total. Dosages of curcumin up to 8g per day have been used – Higher doses may cause adverse GI effects.

Stinging Nettle

Many people swear by this old traditional medicine for allergies. Another superstar – Often used as an allergy treatment; this botanical is considered to be a useful histamine blocker as well as an inflammation fighter. There’s some evidence that using stinging nettle after the first sign of allergic signs can in fact help. However, despite its common use, there are not many studies backing up stinging nettle’s effectiveness as an allergy treatment. It is more a traditional folk medicine like ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar), but there are some studies. One small study implied that stinging nettle might help lessen symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

In a randomized, double-blind study, subjects with allergies reported fewer symptoms after one week use of freeze-dried nettle. Moreover, research from 2009 provides promising results for the first time:

”A mechanistic understanding of the role of nettle extracts in reducing allergic and other inflammatory responses. Nettle extract (Urtica dioica) affects key receptors and enzymes associated with allergic rhinitis. A nettle extract shows in vitro inhibition of several key inflammatory events that cause the symptoms of seasonal allergies.”

To sum up, Stinging nettle’s anti-inflammatory characteristics affect a variety of enzymes and key receptors in allergic reactions, inhibiting hay fever signs if taken when they first emerge.

How to take:

Tips: Be sure to choose extracts of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) leaf, not the root, which is used to treat prostate ailments. Go with a Freeze Dried extract or tincture; in fact, Herbalists often recommends Tincture for instant relief.

Dosing: Dosing depends on the potency of the extract; therefore use as directed. Freeze-dried nettle leaf 600 mg has been used in a clinical trial for allergic rhinitis.

MSM

This one is my favorite for allergies. For some reason, it is often forgotten. Sulfur is one of the most prominent composites in our bodies, just behind sodium and water. In fact, it is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body. Sulfur is involved in the production of energy in body cells, and the formation of antibodies. Scientist Dr. Jacob concluded that the sulfur in MSM, called sulfonyl, is as safe and as important as vitamin C in our diet, unlike the bad sulfurs: sulfas, sulfites, sulfates, and sulfides. MSM is a composite found naturally in foods such as cow’s milk, seafood, meat, veggies, and fruits. It has positive wide-spectrum effects, especially in maintaining healthy cell formation. MSM softens the cell walls, allowing foreign particles such as allergens, and any free-radicals to be flushed out of your system. It is used to help with number of conditions, including allergies.

MSM does not act as an anti-histamine compound that hinders histamine production. Its effectiveness is probably due to the capability to block the receptivity of histamine in the delicate tissue of the mucus membranes of nasal passages. This process prevents the histamine from forming the inflammation and swelling that usually accompanies allergies. Allergy sufferers that have taken MSM have reported back to their doctors that their pain levels were fifty percent less, or better, after using this supplement. Most patients report improvement and a reduction in pain and allergy symptoms within a week. Researchers believe that MSM works in a similar way to aspirin; to reduce pain and swelling due to inflammation.

”In addition, Dr. Mercola notes, MSM is 34% sulfur, which your body needs. Sulfur helps the body detoxify itself, and also helps build glutathione, an important antioxidant. MSM is very safe and you can take it at high doses, even if one’s diet is full of MSM-rich foods. Those of our staff who found a full relief took more than 2600 mg: up to 10,000 mg a day in divided doses. At these doses, it is often more beneficial to take MSM as a powder rather than a capsule, most of which contain 1,000 mg.’‘

”In one study, patients who received 2600 mg of MSM found their upper and total respiratory symptoms significantly reduced within 7 days, and improvement continued for the whole 30 days of that study (from the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine).

How to take:

Tips: Get the pure powder form, without any fillers and additives. Personally, I use organic sulphur Derived from pine lignans sourced from marine pine trees.

Dosing: Dr. Earl L. Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D., suggests allergy sufferers start using at least 6,000mg of MSM daily for three weeks in divided doses and reduce to 3,000mg per day after that. Also, he advises people drink more water and boost their intake of Vitamin C to lower histamine levels. The ideal dosage would depend on your body size. Sometimes, it takes up to 3 weeks to notice effects.

Neti Pot / Saline Rinse:

This one is not any herb or supplement, but it is so helpful that it should be on the list too.
The simple theory is that you use a Neti Pot filled with a saline solution to clean out the sinuses of allergens and irritations. Either use a pre-made sterile saline rinse or make your own by dissolving one teaspoon of Himalayan salt (or sea salt) in a cup of boiled distilled water. Let it cool and put in your Neti Pot. Pour through one nostril and let it flow out the other, then switch sides.

VIDEO and INSTRUCTIONS: https://www.himalayaninstitute.org/about/press/neti-pot/
CAUTION: You need to use distilled water, never use an unboiled tap water !!
TIP: I also add a drop or two of oregano oil, a teaspoon of coconut oil, and some MSM, but just salt rinse will do.

More Quick Tips:

Probiotics – it all starts in your gut, your allergies may simply be the result of an imbalance in your gut where your immune system exists. Therefore, proper diet and plenty od probiotics are essential for your allergies and health in general. Additionally, one small study suggests that L. acidophilus, a type of “friendly” bacteria, might help reduce allergic reaction to pollen. Moreover, new research links the presence of beneficial bacteria in the gut with reduced incidence of allergies.

Nasal Sprays and Eye,Ear Drops – Natural nasal sprays offers relief as well, I recommend nasal spray with GSE or silver, for eye drops: get natural or homeopathic. If you have itchy ears try mullein-garlic oil ear drops.

Diet and Vitamins – processed foods, junk foods, hydrogenated oils, white flour, sugar, high salt intake, preservatives, msg, artificial sweeteners, diet drinks and many other poor food choices are harmful to your health, and all of these can worsen your allergies or even creating them. Get adequate levels of vitamin D, B and eat plenty of veggies. Switching to a healthy anti-inflammatory diet, removing all toxic foods and toxins from your home, drinking raw vegetable juices and leading a healthy lifestyle (no alcohol, no smoking, reducing stress) in general are crucial steps.

Superfoods – some superfoods like Spirulina stops the release of histamine, which contributes to symptoms of allergic rhinitis, thus may help protect against harmful allergic reactions. Another beneficiary superfood for allergy sufferers is medicinal mushroom Reishi.

Other Helpful Herbs for Sinuses, Allergies and Lungs – Astragalus Root, Andrographis, GSE, Horseradish, Horehound, GoldenRod, Rosmarinic acid, Timothy Grass extract, Tinospora cordifolia, Perilla, Pycnogenol, Garlic, Ginger and NAC (N-Acetyl L-Cysteine: reduces the viscosity of mucus and clears your lungs).

Essential Oils / Steaming – especially steaming with oils like peppermint and eucalyptus can clear up your sinuses and relieve your allergy symptoms.

Air purifier – quality air purifier such as IQ AIR can remove significant percent of allergen particles in your home. For heavy allergy sufferers it is a big help to get a quality purifier with real HEPA filter and which does not create ozone.

Homeopathics and other Home Remedies – such as Apple Cider Vinegar, raw honey, and certain herbal teas may help too; you may want to try some homeopathic formulas as well, I found some to be quite effective.

Safety, Side Effects:

Any of these herbs can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.
Butterbur may interact with some medications that are processed by the liver. Also, it can cause stomach upset, headache, and minor drowsiness. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children should not take butterbur.
Do not take Stinging Nettle without talking to your doctor first if you have diabetes or if you take blood pressure medication, blood thinners, or diuretics. Not suitable for pregnant women.
Turmeric 1, 2
Bromelain has a blood-thining action, and some people are allergic to pineapple products.
Quercetin in higher doses may interfere with some medications.

When you add any of these herbs to your diet in any way, start small and monitor your body’s response. As always, consult a medical professional or qualified herbalist before adding a powerful new components like this to your herbal regimen. In fact, It would be best to work with a natural medicine practitioner who is well-educated on using herbal medicine. It is especially important if you have any medical condition, taking any medications or if you are a pregnant or breastfeeding woman; and if you plan to start giving herbs to your kids.

Final Words:

These natural treatments often work best if started early in the season before pollen counts become too high. As you can see, we do not need big pharma’s antihistamines. Some of these herbs not only helps with the symptoms but actually address the root cause. Don’t forget that healthy lifestyle and your diet contributes a lot. Personally, before my spring allergies occur, I start to user nettle leaf, butterbur, quercetin with bromelain, Andrographis and I up my dosages of vitamin C, MSM and turmeric and my symptoms are close to zero. I wish you a symptom-free allergic season. Finally, Don’t forget to check my other articles on my FB page (contacts below).

11 Herbs for Perimenopause and Menopause Symptom Relief

by Karen Brennan, MSW, CN, BCHN, Herbalist

Around the age of 40 women begin perimenopause and the transition to menopause.  During this time levels of estrogen, progesterone and the androgens fluctuate.  Your body will spend years gradually and naturally going through this process. This transition can last 5 to 10 years and for some up to 13 years.   Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45-55.  During this time your periods may stop and then start again or may occur more frequently and may increase or decrease in intensity and flow. You are officially in menopause when your period has stopped for one full year.

Herbs to Ease Perimenopause/Menopause Symptoms

Note: Always check first with your health professional when adding in herbs to your regimen. Some herbs interact with meds and some are not safe to take with certain health conditions.

Motherwort: This herb can be your ally in reducing irritability and anxiety that may occur during the transition time.  It can calm the heart during perimenopause heart palpitations.  If you have heavy bleeding during perimenopause, then don’t overdo the use of this herb.  It can aid in menopausal insomnia. Avoid this herb if you have low blood pressure.  Take in tea or in tincture.  50-80 drops 2-4 times per day in tincture form.  As a tea use 1 tsp. of dried herb.  Drink 4 oz. three times per day.

Shatavari: This herb is a wonderful one to use during these times of transition. It is useful for hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, anxiety and memory loss.  It also is known to increase libido.  Use 30-60 drops 1-2 times per day depending on the severity of your symptoms.  As a tincture, use 40-80 drops 3x per day.  As a tea use of dried root and consume up to 2 cups per day.  Avoid if you have diarrhea and bloating or add ginger and consume as a tea only.

Passion Flower: This herb has many uses and it is useful for menopausal mood swings.  It can aid in reducing panic attacks, calms irritability and helps with stress relief.  If you can’t turn your mind off at night, use passion flower.  Use in tea blend or take 60-80 drops of tincture 3 times per day.  Avoid with bipolar, schizophrenia and manic phases.  Do not use with MAOI’s.

Sage: This is beneficial for stimulating memory and is useful for the brain fog that is sometimes associated with perimenopause.   It is also good for excessive sweating which means it can be supportive for those with night sweats during perimenopause. It is also used for anxiety, hot flashes and fatigue associated with menopausal symptoms. Take in tincture 30-60 drops 2-3 times per day or use 1 tsp. in a tea blend 3 times per day.

Fennel: While many of you may be familiar with fennel for digestive issues, fennel is used to offer hormonal support as well.  One of its main components appears to have natural hormone like actions.  It can be useful for bloating, menstrual pain and hot flashes.  As a tea use 1-2 tsp in one cup hot water.

Skullcap: This herb is considered a brain tonic and is useful for ADD, poor memory and mental fatigue. It is also useful for PMS, menstrual pain/cramps, menopausal depression and mood swings, hot flashes and irritation.  Use in a tea blend or take ½ t. of tincture as needed.  Avoid with bipolar, schizophrenia and manic phases.

Kudzu root: This herb is beneficial for PMS and peri menopausal symptoms such as acne, hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings.  Take in tincture form of 60 drops 2-3 times per day.

Lemon Balm: Use this herb for menstrual cramping and depression associated with perimenopause.  This is considered a very safe herb and safe for children as well. However, if you have low thyroid uses it is best to minimize the amount of lemon balm you consume as it can lower thyroid function.

Hops: This herb is used for menstrual cramping. This is best used in tea or tincture. It also has a sedative effect.  As a tincture, take 30-60 drops 2-3 times per day.  Avoid with usage of sedative medication.  Do not use if you have depression.

Black Cohosh: This herb has been popularized for use for hot flashes yet it also has many other beneficial uses. This herb can also be useful for those with depression.  Avoid use of this herb if you have liver disease.  Take 20-40 drops of tincture per day.

Chaste Tree Berry: Some of you may be familiar with Chaste Tree (Vitex) for hormonal support, however a word of caution-it is very easy to overdo it with this herb. Taking too much may increase progesterone levels and thus increase your symptoms.  If using this herb, take only one capsule per day in the morning or 15 drops of tincture in the morning.  Avoid usage if you are taking antipsychotic medications.

Going Beyond Herbs to Reduce Symptoms

For some of you with mild symptoms, an herb or two may do the trick.  For those of you that continue to struggle with symptoms your body may need more support than just a few herbs.  Addressing and identifying imbalances in the body will be key for you, such as addressing blood sugar, adrenals, thyroid, digestion and/or other areas to restore balance.  Dietary changes along with targeted supplementation may be needed depending on your current diet and symptoms.

For instance, some of you may enter perimenopause sooner than others due to poor health or due to your diet.

Estrogen dominance becomes an issue along with its side effects during perimenopause for some due to low progesterone levels.  The key is to find out what is the issue for you and then address it.

The bottom line is yes, there is something you can do instead of having to put up with these symptoms for years!

Dying patients waiting hours for pain relief in NHS funding shortfall

Dying patients are waiting up to eight hours to receive pain relief because of cuts to district nursing services during the NHS’s unprecedented budget squeeze, a new report has revealed.

Severe financial pressures on the NHS are leading to longer waits for treatment and a short-sighted and growing rationing of care that is storing up problems for the future, according to a study by the King’s Fund health thinktank.

The report quotes one unnamed manager of a hospice saying: “The district nurses working at night are not able to give effective response times; you can wait up to eight hours … for patients experiencing pain and discomfort in the last two to three days of their life, it has a massive impact. It’s a frightening time for patients.”

The King’s Fund research has found that district nursing and sexual health services are among the areas of care most affected by six years of the NHS in England receiving annual budget increases of 1.2%, far less than its historic average of 3.7% rises.

It highlights how the diminishing number of district nurses are struggling to give patients prompt high-quality care because they are increasingly overworked.

The need to balance budgets and the smaller numbers of district nurses are prompting some NHS bodies to restrict their eligibility criteria for patients seeking help, refusing it for those with serious mobility problems unless they are completely housebound.

“We heard some examples of providers attempting to limit access. This was mainly through tightening referral criteria, particularly in relation to patients being ‘housebound’. Increasingly, if patients are able to visit their general practice (even if doing so is challenging), they will not be eligible to receive care from district nurses,” the report states.

The past two years have seen a loss of one in seven (14.8%) district nursing posts. “There is a significant gap between demand for district nursing and the available resources in terms of funding and staff numbers,” researchers found. Heavier workloads are contributing to 20% vacancy rates in some places.

The report also warns: “Pressures in district nursing are affecting the quality of patient care. Staff are increasingly rushed. Visits have become more task-focused, and there is less opportunity for thorough assessments. This dilution of quality may damage patient experience and outcomes.”

Many services provided by acute hospitals have been “relatively protected” despite the lack of investment in the NHS in recent years, the authors say.

However, genito-urinary medicine services have been hard hit, with cuts of up to 20% in 2014/15-2015/16 in some places in the budgets for testing for and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. “This has resulted in fewer clinics and reductions in staff in some areas, while there have also been cuts to prevention and outreach services. This could put patients and the general population at greater risk of infection,” the report adds.

The number of hip replacements has also started to fall, despite growing demand for them caused by the ageing population. Slightly fewer were carried out in 2015-16 than the year before as NHS clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) sought to save money by making surgery conditional on losing weight or giving up smoking. Waiting times for the procedure have also lengthened and more patients are waiting longer than the supposed maximum 18 weeks.

“It’s a disgrace that as a result of the Tory funding squeeze many elderly people are forced to live in prolonged agony and without independence because they are denied a hip replacement in reasonable time,” said Jonathan Ashworth, the shadow health secretary.

“Patients are unfairly suffering the consequences of a deliberately underfunded NHS at breaking point,” said Dr Mark Porter, chair of council at the British Medical Association.

The King’s Fund warns that rationing of care will become ever more common. “Although NHS funding growth began to slow in 2010/11, it appears to have taken some time for financial constraints to impact on patient care, and our data suggests that these impacts will spread and intensify,” the report adds.

The Department of Health has told CCGs not to ration care, despite the tight financial constraints it has imposed. NHS England said only: “Ultimately these are legally decisions for CCGs, but informed by best evidence and national guidance where appropriate.”

10 Natural Stress Relief Tips & How to Create a Serene Space

After the holidays, we all need time for stress relief. Starting the New Year off with a routine of taking time for yourself to unwind is the best gift you can give yourself.

Creating a serene space at home is the best part. If you want to try yoga or meditation, make it a project to clear out a space in a room for just that activity. De-clutter the area; keep it simple, perhaps a candle, an iPod player for meditation music, and a small table for incense or jewelry. Keep the floor clean so that it is inviting to sit there or do yoga. Leave the cell phone out of the room while you are meditating, so that there are no distracting sounds. Even choosing an outside area is a great idea, as you get the fresh air, the sounds of the birds, and the peace of being in nature.

5 Yoga Poses to try

Yoga reduces cortisol and adrenaline, both hormones that make us feel stressed and overwhelmed. But the key to a reduction in those hormones is a steady practice that happens regularly. Try these poses for a deep stretch and a chance to take some deep breaths and relax.

  • Standing Forward Bend (holding both your elbows to further pull your upper body downwards) – This is a perfect pose for back pain & for all of those hours spent sitting

  • Triangle Pose – stretches so many muscles and brings the heart open

  • Downward-Facing Dog – releases the back, stretches the upper back, and stretches the hamstrings. Be sure to raise your butt up as high as you can to release the weight from your wrists.

  • Supine Twist – A gentle twist that helps back pain and releases tension

  • Low Lunge – a great pose for releasing tension in the hips and stretching hip flexors.

Be sure to not over-stretch as you can cause ligaments to tear resulting in months of recovery. Go slowly and feel the edge of your abilities. Then back away from that edge. Stretching should feel good, not painful.

If yoga is not for you, try a different exercise routine. Even joining a team boot camp can be fun, but make sure it is made for your level of fitness. Dance workouts also are a lot of fun and make the time pass quickly. Exercise is very beneficial for the brain, and has been shown to be just as effective as anti-depressants. Even walking for 30 minutes several times per week gives the same brain benefit as high intensity exercise.

Drink at least 8 glasses of filtered water every day

When you are dehydrated or not getting enough water, your cortisol levels rise in your brain, which causes stress. Fill up bottles ahead of time and put them in the fridge for cold, refreshing water. Try adding bruised lemon slices, cucumber slices, even fruit like raspberries. Make sure to drink water from a good water filter that takes pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and fluoride out of the water.

Take Lemon Balm for stress relief

Extract: 10-15 Drops in water.

Tea: keep the lid on the teapot as the terpenes in Lemon Balm are in the steam.

Lemon Balm is great for relieving restlessness, anxiety, and insomnia. Studies have shown that combining Lemon Balm with Valerian was very effective for anxiety and insomnia.  If you are taking medications or are pregnant, consult your doctor before taking Lemon Balm or Valerian.

Read a favorite novel or book

Reading calms the brain and helps us to focus on one thing instead of being distracted. Reading a novel allows us to escape into a fantastical world or just another person’s life. I make it a point to only read books with characters who are good people, who strive to do the right thing, versus books where the majority of characters are evil, intent on causing havoc, etc. I feel stress melt away when I’m reading about good people. I’m inspired by them and hopeful for them!

A study at the University of Sussex found that reading reduced stress by 68%, better than listening to calming music or drinking a hot cup of tea.

Meditate

Many studies have been done on meditation for stress-relief. The best kind of meditation is one where you are not forcing your mind to be present. But rather, you are noticing how your mind wanders, and you are listening to your breath. Notice the mind wander and then accept it, let it go. Imagine the negative thoughts as a balloon, choose a color for it, picture it in your head, and let it float up into nothingness. Even 5-10 minutes of meditation every day can make a huge difference in your stress levels. Try doing a short meditation at the end of your yoga session and it might be easier to fit in. Or do it right before falling asleep at night. Make it easy and fun, not a bunch of work.

Create something

Learn to cook, draw, paint, create a scrapbook, or make a simple piece of furniture. These types of hobbies make you feel like you are creating something tangible and real. Hobbies provide you with “eustress”, a good kind of stress that makes you feel challenged and excited. However, too much eustress (from too many appointments and activities) can turn into chronic stress that makes us go into “fight or flight” mode and burnout. If most of your hobbies involve lots of other people, try doing a hobby that is solo. It will give you the time to reflect. Plus, if you’re doing it at home you can set up your environment for peace and serenity.

Laugh more

Be with people who you love & who make you joyful! That face-to-face time is priceless and it is gone in an instant. Enjoy it now.

Garden or Be Outside Every Day

Time in nature is so important for stress relief. Sitting in the sun with your eyes closed and meditating is a powerful stress reliever. Experiencing the beauty of the outdoors gives us peace. Replace your nightly TV-watching with a walk with your spouse or a friend. A study has shown that watching TV is the same as being low-level stressed whereas heart rates were calm while watching nature out of a window. To be happy and peaceful in life, we need to interact with nature, even if it means smelling a flower or watching ducks at a pond. Make it a priority to take walks during lunch or a nightly walk after work.

Journal 3 Things You Are Grateful for Today

Make it a habit to write down 3 things you are grateful for every day. Your sense of accomplishment and self-worth will increase by doing this. You will feel less of a need to be constantly busy. It will also help you to pinpoint the important things in your life that you might not be focusing on. Or perhaps it will help you see that certain people in your life need to know how grateful you are for their presence and love.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil is very relaxing and calming for our nervous system. Diffuse it into the air or dab a drop on your feet before bed. Try mixing a spray of 50% witch hazel + 50% water + 5 drops of lavender essential oil, shake it, and spray it on your pillow before bed.

Stress relief using natural methods is a great way to gently guide your body into a new year full of happiness and productivity. I am happiest creating things, being in nature, and spending time with loved ones. But sometimes we also forget to make time for ourselves. Take time every day to do something just for yourself, that makes YOU happy. That happiness will radiate throughout your life and touch others.

My migraine relief | Letter

I was sorry to read of Anna Altman’s distressing symptoms (The long read, 17 November), which I recognised only too well. I spent 40 years of my life suffering incapacitating pain, nausea, dizziness and hallucinations in spite of trying every possible conventional and unconventional treatment.

I was permanently cured by a simple surgical procedure and 10 years later am migraine-free. I had to pay for this private operation in Germany. I took out a bank loan and it’s the best money I ever spent. My life was transformed. I subsequently advised other intending patients. The success rate is 85%. It’s not available on the NHS and my GP had never heard of it. He counselled against it, preferring to prescribe me increasing doses of increasingly expensive “migraine medications”, none of which worked.

Natural relief for menstrual cramps from acupuncture

Dysmenorrhoea (menstrual cramps) can be defined as the painful spasms which originate in the uterus just before or throughout menstruation. The cause of dysmenorrhoea is associated and referred to in two types: Primary or Secondary.

Primary Dysmenorrhoea occurs without any primary cause and usually during adolescence. It is characterised by crampy pelvic pain occurring just before or during onset of menses, and lasts between one and three days.

Secondary Dysmenorrhoea occurs due to a pre existing primary condition, commonly endometriosis (abnormal growth of uterine tissue) along with ovarian cysts. In most of the cases of dysmenorrhoea, severe contractions of the muscles occur resulting in unbearable pains. These pains normally persist for 8 to 72 hours.

The main symptom of both primary and secondary types of dysmenorrhoea is the pain, and this pain cannot be adequately relieved by NSAID medications (pain killers or pain reliever medications).

Primary dysmenorrhoea seems to be more common in adolescent girls compared to older women, as the condition gets better with time and age. Secondary dysmenorrhoea is not very prevalent in teens, because the conditions responsible for it is often only seen some time after puberty has ended.

Most of the teenagers feel pain which is quite uncomfortable, but still somehow bearable, during their menstruation. But in some cases, this menstrual pain becomes so severe that it hampers their normal day to day activities.

Through various studies on affected individuals, it has been found as the period of menstruation progresses, the severity of pain from dysmenorrhoea increases. Other factors which can trigger dysmenorrhoea are menarche (the very first onset of menstruation) at a younger than average age, and cigarette smoking.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is traditional Chinese healing practice that involves stimulating specific points on the body, usually by insertion of needles into the skin, to alleviate pain or to help treat various health conditions.

In other words, by inserting fine needles into a patients skin at specific points on the body, the bodies reaction helps to relieve pain or alleviate certain illnesses. Acupuncture needles are inserted to various depths, into pre-determined and well studied points around the body.

Unlike many other treatments which have originated through natural and traditional medicine, Acupuncture has been proven effective and is regularly promoted in western medicine.

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?

The natural functions of the body along with the body’s natural healing process is stimulated by using Acupuncture. Acupuncture targets the bodies anatomic sites (acupuncture points / acupoints) through the insertion of a fine sterile needle through the skin, triggering a response from the body.

To further enhance the treatment, heat, pressure or even mild electrical stimulation can be applied to each acupoint following the needle being inserted. Acupuncture when carried out by a fully trained physician is often an entirely pain free process, with the patient often only experiencing a feeling of pressure at each acupoint.

BENEFITS OF ACUPUNCTURE IN DYSMENORRHOEA

Acupuncture helps in relieving pains of dysmenorrhoea through the following methods:

  • By stimulating nerves in muscles and body tissues, which results in the release of endorphins and other neurohumoral factors, which assist in lowering the severity of pain through blocking pain receptors within the brain and spinal cord;

  • By reducing inflammation through promoting the release of immunomodulators.

  • By regulating neuroendocrine activities, along with activation of the receptors which are dependent upon the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovary.

  • By increasing nitric oxide levels which relax smooth muscle, thereby promoting inhibition of uterine contractions.

  • Enhances relaxation and reduces stress. Acupuncture can promote the release of chemicals from the brain, decreasing the amount of serotonin released and increasing the release of endorphin and  Y class neuropeptides, which can also inhibit negative emotional elements.

While conventional medicines may not be able to adequately treat dysmenorrhoea at the present time, acupuncture and dysmenorrhea is often regarded as a highly effective treatment, without danger from any serious side effects or adverse effects.

While this treatment may seem expensive in comparison to prescribed NSAID’s, results have shown throughout a number of acupuncture comparison studies to be far superior to NSAID medication (anti-inflammatory / pain relief medication). The benefits of acupuncture upon dysmenorrhea is also observed to be ongoing and cumulative.

Unlike drugs which are often required to be taken on an ongoing basis. Most patients who experience benefits from acupuncture have been shown to continue experiencing lower levels of pain, even months following their initial treatment.

16 herbs and supplements for allergy relief

Seasonal Allergies:

Find out what to do “off-season” and what to do right now for allergy symptom relief-the natural way!

It is that time of year when eyes start to itch; you have a runny nose or congestion, an itchy throat and are constantly sneezing. Do you rely on OTC anti-histamine products or just suffer through it?

There are natural ways to relive your seasonal allergies. Read on for allergy relief!

Everyone is different so it may take a few tries before you find the right product that works for your body. After allergy season (and even during and before) it is best to start working on supporting your gut health and immune health so that you can reduce or eliminate your allergies come next season.

Why you should avoid OTC allergy medication

A new study found that medications such as anticholinergics (of which Benadryl is classified) found an increase in brain atrophy, dysfunction, and cognitive decline in users, especially older adults. Don’t think that just because a medication is OTC that it is safe.

An allergy medication that has been linked to increased suicide risk is Singular. This medication is also used to treat asthma attacks.  While this drug is by prescription only, many may take Sudafed as an OTC alternate for relief.  Sudafed has also been related to suicidal ideation in some.  If you do choose medication, please do your homework first or talk to a professional first about whether these meds are the safest option for you.

Why has there been an increase in seasonal allergies?

  • Cleanliness, our lack of exposure to environmental microbes-do kids play in the dirt anymore? Look at all the anti-bacterial soap we buy and use. While having good hygiene is a plus, too much of a good thing can disrupt the normal immune development and will increase your risk for allergies.

  • Antibiotics

  • Birth by C-section

  • Not having pets in the home

  • formula feeding

  • Pollen counts continue to rise-blame it on air pollution. Many types of pollen such as ragweed are toxic. They contain enzymes that damage the lining of your nose and lungs when you breathe them in. This sets the stage for rising allergies.

All this sets the body up for lack of diversity in our microbes and contributes to allergies. When on antibiotics, especially repeated usage, this will disrupt the gut microbiome.  A birth by C-section means the baby did not get the healthy bacteria from its mother.  Studies show that those who have pets in the home or those who grow up on farms tend to have fewer incidences of allergies. Studies also show that if you have access to and drink raw milk your chance of seasonal allergies is also reduced.

When is the best time to address allergy symptom relief?

Actually, it’s not when your symptoms appear every season, rather you should be addressing them by supporting your immune system year round.

As always, food first! If you take supplements and herbs but still eat like crap then you are wasting your efforts and money!

What to add in year round to support your body

  • Address delayed food allergies/sensitivities:  Seasonal allergies may be related to delayed food allergies (see my blog post April 2016) or food sensitivities. Get tested or do food elimination diet.

  • Manage stress: stress can impact your immune system and your adrenal glands. Support the body with whole foods, mineral salts and adaptogens if adrenal fatigue is an issue for you. (for more on adrenal fatigue read Adrenal Fatigue by Dr. Wilson or go online and take the adrenal fatigue quiz)

  • Reduce/eliminate sugar: sugar lowers WBC count and reduces immune function. Opt for raw, local honey in small doses instead. (see note below on bee products and seasonal allergies)

  • Address gut health with Probiotics and Prebiotics: probiotics will help to populate the good bacteria in your gut. The prebiotics are essentially food for your good bacteria to help them thrive. Choose supplement form or add in raw garlic and onions, raw asparagus, kombucha, kefir, raw fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut, raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar and fermented soy

  • Vitamin C: while we get vitamin C from our whole foods such as fruits and vegetables the amount that we get from these foods has been greatly diminished over the past 80 years or so. Take vitamin C with bioflavonoids at 500-1,000 mg. daily. Children can take ¼-1/8 this amount depending on size.

  • Vitamin D: in studies with children with seasonal allergies, low vitamin D status was associated with higher risk of allergies, especially to birch, ragweed and oak. It is best to know your vitamin D levels before supplementing. Safe dose is 2,000 IU daily of D3. Avoid D2 as it is synthetic. If you choose products fortified with vitamin D, know that this too is vitamin D2, the synthetic form which is difficult for the body to absorb.

  • NAC: this stands for N-Acetyl-Cysteine. This is the precursor to glutathione, our master antioxidant which also helps to balance the immune system. Take NAC at 50-100 mg. 3 times daily.

  • Curcumin: this is a compound found in turmeric. This enhances the immune system and can be taken year round. It also reduces inflammation and thus may also be good for symptom relief. (I like a brand called Curamed by europharmausa.com and it can also be found in many natural health stores.)

Symptom Relief

You do not need to try all of these-pick a few and see what works for you. Always check with your doctor, ND, nutritionist or herbalist before adding in herbs if you are on any medications, are pregnant or breastfeeding or have chronic health conditions.  Some herbs can interact with medications while others are safe to take short term but not long term. It is best to work with someone knowledgeable in herbs for these reasons.

  • Butterbur: butterbur can relax smooth muscle spasms and inhibit inflammatory histamines. Take in standardized form for symptom relief. Studies show that those who take butterbur in standardized tablets or in extract form 3 times daily get the greatest relief of their symptoms.

  • Nettle: stinging nettle can provide dramatic relief from hay fever and stops a runny nose due to its anti-histamine properties. In capsules or tablets take 500 to 1,000 mg. 3 times per day. In some studies patients were given 600 mg. of freeze dried stinging nettle leaf at the onset of allergy season and then 300 mg. as needed with the average dose 3 times per day during the allergy season.

  • Serrapeptase: this is an enzyme that can help reduce swelling in the lungs and make breathing easier. It is helpful for congestion, runny nose and post nasal drip associated with allergies. It is marketed as a joint supplement due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Veganzyme is a trusted brand from globalhealingcenter.com. This product contains Serrapeptase but other supportive enzymes as well such as bromelain which is also known to be effective for seasonal allergy symptoms.

  • Quercetin: this can help prevent seasonal allergic reactions if started soon enough. Quercetin can also be found in onions and apples. Take in tablet form 125-250 mg. 3 times per day between meals for 6-8 weeks before the allergy season begins.

Some people prefer Source Naturals Activated Quercetin at 2 capsules 3 times per day.

Do not take Quercetin if you are on the immune suppressing drug cyclosporine or the calcium channel blocker nifedipine.

  • Ginger: reduces allergic inflammation. Take capsules, 1,000 mg. 3-4 times daily between meals for 6-8 weeks before the allergy season begins.

  • Horseradish: this will relieve sinus congestion and helps to deter future allergy attacks. If you can handle it, eat ½-1 teaspoon daily until symptoms subside.

  • Rooibos: many know rooibos tea as very antioxidant rich herb with the green rooibos being higher in antioxidants than the red but either way both are still good sources of antioxidants. Rooibos also acts as an antihistamine and is also helpful if you have food allergies. Drink one cup of the tea 1-3 times per during allergy season but it is also good to drink all year round. This tea is caffeine free and can withstand long brewing times and does not get bitter with reuse.

  • Chamomile: this can reduce the intensity and duration of allergic reactions due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Drink one cup of tea 2-3 times per day. Chamomile is relaxing for the nervous system so you may want to save one cup for before bedtime. Chamomile is considered a very safe herb, however those who are allergic to ragweed may be allergic to chamomile-use with caution the very first time you try it. Teas are less potent than in tincture form.

  • Scutellaria (skullcap): It is used for allergies, hay fever and other respiratory conditions. It contains chemicals that may prevent histamine from provoking hay fever attacks. One of the compounds interferes with a complex set of hormonal reactions that constrict the bronchial tubes during asthma attacks. This also relieves headaches that are associated with hay fever. Take in capsule form 1,000-2,000 mg. 3 times per day. Do not confuse this herb with American skullcap as the two herbs are not interchangeable. You want the Asian form and may have to get it via online. Do not purchase one that also contains germander, an herb that can cause liver damage. Do not use if you have chronic diarrhea.

  • Bee pollen: this must be local! Please talk to your doctor first since you may react to the pollen if you have seasonal allergies. When starting out with local bee pollen take only one pellet at first to make sure you do not react. With each new batch of pollen you purchase, do this test first. If no reaction, then start with 1/8 of a teaspoon daily, gradually working your way up to 1 teaspoon per day. This should be started several months before the beginning of hay fever season. Bee pollen is rich in B vitamins and other nutrients and if no reaction you can eat this daily, year round. You can add it to cold dishes such as smoothies, yogurt or chia seed pudding or just eat your dose daily off the spoon! Bee pollen is like a natural allergy shot-giving you small doses of the pollens you are allergic too and building your immune system over time. Find local farms for your pollen.

  • Green Tea: the xanthine’s in green tea help relax bronchial spasms and can be effective for allergy symptom relief (and asthma too). Drink 1 cup in the morning (due to caffeine content) daily during allergy season.

  • Diamine Oxidase: This is an enzyme that is responsible for histamine breakdown. For some, the root cause of the allergy symptoms may be due to histamine intolerance. This can be from excess histamine or from a deficiency of the enzyme that breaks it down. Histamine can act as a neurotransmitter and also regulates the production of stomach acid. You need some histamine but you don’t want it too elevated (or too low for that matter). Restore gut balance to resolve the histamine issue but take this enzyme to assist with high histamine levels. Take in supplement form. This enzyme also requires vitamin B6 to function properly. You can also try a low histamine diet. This would include limiting or advoiding foods such as fermented foods, aged cheese, citrus, fish, shellfish, avocado, spinach, cocoa, and left- over meat to name a few.

Doctor"s Diary: a guy in acute soreness finds unexpected relief

He was at first handled with gabapentin 3 occasions every day to excellent effect, particularly at night, though this resulted in daytime sedation and dizziness. Accordingly, he was switched to the more pricey pregabalin, with the morning dose decreased to minimise the dizziness – but this led to “breakthrough” ache during the day. This was countered by adding in the antidepressant duloxetine, which initially triggered nausea, though this settled and the dose was increased.

The curiosity of the lady for whom speaking – specially on the telephone – leads to her to build a blocked nose is most likely caused by persistent hyperventilation, otherwise identified as Carbon Dioxide Syndrome, suggests Sally Gething, a practitioner of the Russian breathing approach Buteyko.

The explanation is as follows. We routinely breathe about 5l of air per minute at rest, which for these with hyperventilation can rise threefold when speaking, causing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the entire body to fall. This in turn constricts the smooth muscle in the nasal passages – hence the blocked-nose sensation. This sort of difficulty is apparently acquainted to Buteyko practitioners and can be avoided by adopting their breathing approaches. For a lot more details, go to www.buteyko.co.united kingdom.

Impaired vision

This week’s health-related query comes courtesy of Mrs PB from Suffolk who, for the previous number of weeks, has identified that for the initial hour or so following waking, she has difficulty in reading a newspaper. This can be improved by washing her eyes in warm water. Her distance vision is unimpaired. She has no indications of conjunctivitis, but her eyes do feel a bit sore in the direction of the finish of the day. Her optician are not able to explain this uncommon symptom and she would be more than grateful for any ideas.

Just the tonic

Ultimately, Harry Leeming, who writes a regular column for Useful Wireless, receives “all kinds of odd questions” that fall inside of his discipline of skills. He wonders whether any individual may well be able to clarify the following. Back in the Forties, those who felt under par would visit their household doctor (or the panel physician of pre-NHS days) requesting a “tonic”, and they would be dispensed a bottle of coloured liquid.

“They had been convinced this created them truly feel a great deal much better and that some tonics have been better than other individuals,” says Mr Leeming. He suspects this to be a situation of mind above matter but would be interested to uncover out what the ingredients may have been. Now aged 76, he occasionally feels a bit under par and wonders whether there is anything he should be taking.

As forecast, Atos Healthcare has left its controversial £100m-a-yr contract with the Division for Perform and Pensions to deliver the operate capability assessment, the notorious “match for work” test that for its several critics has grow to be a grim byword for out-sourced state incompetence and callousness.

There will be some relief among campaigners that Atos has quit but most understand that although the French-owned company could have been the lightning rod for public anger above disability benefit reform it was ministers and the state who the two brought in the test and created and enforced the norms and laws by which it is delivered.

Two queries arise: why, after many years of mounting concern about Atos’s efficiency and the accuracy and safety of the WCA has it taken so lengthy for matters to come to a head? And second: does Atos’s departure signal a want on the element of ministers to genuinely reform a approach that handful of outdoors of the DWP – whether campaigners, GPs, MPs, or benefit claimants – think about to be either humane or match for goal?

Ministers indulged in the usual political blame game on Thursday morning: the WCA was a undesirable contract inherited from Labour. But 1 of the earliest acts of this government, back in November 2010, was to extend the Atos contract for a additional five many years. It was Coalition ministers who made the decision on a large and fast expansion of the test, in May possibly 2011, to re-assess one.5m existing incapacity benefit claimants, despite obvious warnings from their personal skilled advisor, Professor Malcolm Harrington, that the rollout ought to be delayed right up until what he described as an “inhumane and mechanistic” test could be additional refined.

A long list of reviews, campaigns and inquiries more than the past 3 years testify to the terrible human consequences of that austerity-led dash to pull vulnerable individuals off incapacity benefit as a way of driving down welfare investing. In the publish-industrial functioning class communities the place incapacity advantage take up was highest the WCA became a kind of terror: for years, claimants had been advised they had been too sick to perform now they would be tested and if they failed, their currently slender weekly revenue would be cut by 30%. Not just did they face becoming pitched into deep poverty overnight but they would endure the stigma of currently being labelled a “scrounger”.

The widespread distress amongst claimants brought on by the re-evaluation of incapacity advantage was swiftly picked up in GPs surgeries, welfare tips bureaux and food banking institutions. Right after an attempted suicide in a Merseyside jobcentre, DWP staff were warned by officials to be “empathetic” in direction of folks impacted by the changes. Alarmingly, the WCA cropped up with regularity at coroner’s inquests, the place fear of imminent re-assessment, or depression brought on by currently being declared fit for perform, was more and more noted as a factor in the deaths of vulnerable folks.

There is no company proof that the WCA drives folks to consider their life but this week a report by the Psychological Welfare Commission for Scotland concluded that the check straight led a lady with a historical past of stress related depression to consider her own existence. She died significantly less than a month soon after an Atos assessor declared her match for perform, resulting in her £94.25 a week benefit cash flow getting minimize to £67.50. “There was not something else which we could identify that would lead us to think that there was any other aspect in her existence that resulted in her selection to finish her daily life,” stated the commission. The WCA, the commission concluded, was flawed. The DWP disagreed. It declared that its methods were “largely robust and proper.”

WCA appeals tribunals tell a diverse story. The WCA – dubbed by a single MP as a “crude pc check” – is notorious for delivering seemingly incomprehensible decisions. Tales of claimants with terminal cancer who are located match for work, for example, have grow to be a stock neighborhood newspaper story. There have been above 600,000 appeals towards fit-for-work decisions in latest years, clogging up tribunal courts and costing the taxpayer above £60m a yr. Nationally, 4 out of ten appealed selections do well. Where claimants have skilled representation this figure rockets. Oxfordshire Mind reported not too long ago that a startling 98% of WCA appeals taken up by its advisors on behalf of mentally-unwell customers had been effective.

Nevertheless it was not until relatively lately that Atos and the government dropped the fiction that all was properly. In January, Atos boss Joe Hemming informed a sceptical committee of MPs: “We have a genuine passion for delivering solutions to the citizen in a way that continues to satisfy the way the citizen needs to be served.” But tensions between government and Atos had come to a head final summertime. The DWP had raised issues about Atos’s efficiency for its element Atos was desperate to leave a contract that it regarded as both undeliverable and a public relations disaster.

The disability minister, Mike Penning, explained on Thursday morning that Atos will quit the WCA ahead of its contract ends in August 2015 (even though it will proceed to operate a separate WCA contract in Northern Ireland). The choice will not impact Atos’s other huge government welfare contract, to carry out the Individual Independence Payment assessments (although the National Audit Workplace has raised concerns that this contract also is working into critical problems). There are number of indications that the government sees the WCA issue as something other than a technical contracting concern. Outsourcing giants Serco and G4S are believed to be in the frame to substitute Atos.

Campaigners, on the other hand, think that Atos’s departure alone will consequence in minor materials alter to the WCA. No government is probably to abandon the principle of incapacity benefit re-evaluation but they will look for a root and branch assessment that make certain that the check gets to be far more sensitive and puts the person first, rather than welfare money financial savings. “The check must be more than an exercising in obtaining men and women off rewards,” said the Scope charity chief executive Richard Hawkes: “It need to make sure disabled individuals get the specialist, tailored and flexible help they need to have to locate and preserve a job.”
