The Guardian view on air pollution: playing politics with the nation’s health | Editorial

Thanks to this government’s intransigence about tackling air pollution, the battle to improve the quality of the air we breathe has played out not in the political arena, but in the courts. Time after time, the government has found itself on the wrong side of the law: first for its failure to meet legally binding European targets on harmful nitrogen dioxide emissions; then, for failing to produce an adequate plan to address these. Its latest delaying tactic has been to claim it could not meet this week’s court-imposed deadline for publishing a new draft plan, because of the “purdah” convention ruling out new government announcements in the run-up to an election.

And so it has fallen to judges yet again to take the government to task over its failure to act. Today’s ruling took apart the government’s case: its own purdah guidance sets out exemptions where public health is at risk. As the judge pointed out, why would it be better to have parties debating what ought to be in a draft air pollution plan, when it could be debating what is actually in it?

The government’s real motivations are political, not procedural. Having delayed taking meaningful action for seven years, it is clearly nervous about proposing any measures that hit drivers of diesel cars during an election campaign. Its political cowardice is astounding – and pointless. Public attitudes have shifted in recent years, and London’s Labour mayor, Sadiq Khan, has made tackling air pollution one of his top priorities. The government is unlikely to face opposition to tougher action from any of its mainstream political opponents, and is enjoying double-digit poll leads.

Yet it continues to shirk its responsibilities to the nation’s public health. Today’s air pollution may be less visible than the smogs that settled over our cities in the 1950s, but it is a deadly killer, responsible for upwards of 40,000 premature deaths per year. London breached its annual air pollution limit just five days into 2017, and legal limits were easily surpassed in the vast majority of local authorities. The effects are particularly pernicious for children whose lungs are still developing.

The human cost makes the government’s latest attempts to delay a disgrace. The two-month extension it was seeking for its final plan could have meant thousands of avoidable premature deaths, all in service of not wanting to jeopardise a marginal number of votes in an election that it is on course to win handsomely. It’s a sick calculus.

The good news is that air pollution is easier to tackle than other environmental and public health challenges. Unlike climate change, it is relatively localised: city-scale actions to address pollution levels can have a marked effect on their air quality. Much (though by no means all) of the problem comes down to emissions from diesel vehicles and, to a greater extent than in other areas of public health, consumers are highly responsive to financial incentives. The irony is that we know this because many have switched from petrol to diesel as a result of sweeteners introduced back when diesel was thought to be more environmentally friendly due to its lower carbon emissions.

But heavy lobbying from the car industry in Westminster and Brussels has staved off firm action. European emissions tests for diesel cars have been far easier to manipulate than in the US; as a result, 97% of modern diesel cars exceed the official limit for NOx pollution. Behind the scenes, the British government has tried to block tougher testing. It’s a familiar story: the government similarly watered down plans to tackle childhood obesity in the face of special pleading from the food and drink industry.

The high court ruling puts the ball back in the government’s court. It should choose to accept it, rather than appeal. But either way, it has been exposed as a government willing to privilege marginal political advantage and the lobbying efforts of big business over the health of the nation.

Are you playing health roulette?

Using the HRT (hormone replacement therapy) drug scandal for openers, relying on conventional medicine to treat your health is like playing Russian Roulette with your life.

Virtually every popular treatment offered by conventional medicine is potentially deadly.

Chemotherapy kills more patients than it saves, bariatric surgery kills thousands of obese patients right on the operating table, HRT drugs double your risk of breast cancer and pharmaceuticals may double your risk of heart attacks or stroke.

Over-the-counter painkillers can kill you from internal bleeding, vaccines cause autism and Alzheimer’s disease, antidepressant drugs cause diabetes, diabetes drugs double the risk of bone fractures, and statin drugs cause eye disorders too. This might be what Big Pharma’s researchers mean when they say their studies are “double blind”.

Dr. Gary Null, in his book Death by Medicine, says that the industry of modern medicine kills 783,000 Americans a year. Sadly, it saves nowhere near that number, meaning that America would be better off without modern medicine at all!

Every time you pop a pill, it’s like betting on a roulette wheel in Vegas. Only it’s not your money that’s at risk, it’s your life!

Yeah, you could get lucky and a good spin might result in having your symptoms go away for a while. Maybe your cancer tumor will shrink, or your blood pressure is artificially lowered, or you don’t feel as much pain because your body is numbed with pharmaceuticals, but if your roulette wheel comes up empty, you could not only lose your bet, you could lose your life!

Various synthetic pharmaceuticals cause liver disease, cancer, heart disease, strokes, kidney failure, impaired brain function, impaired immune system function, loss of sleep quality, impotence, infertility, hair loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, accelerated aging, neurological disorders and so much more. And these are that drugs that the FDA says are “safe and effective” for treating your health conditions.

They don’t call the FDA “Fatal Drugs Allowed” or the “Fraud and Drug Administration” for nothing!

Meanwhile, the entire “medical” industry is against nutrition.

They say: “Don’t waste your money on superfoods”. “Nutrition doesn’t work in the human body”. “Don’t visit natural health practitioners”. “Don’t take those vitamins, they might kill you”! These are the deceptions of the drug pushers who are far more interested in controlling the marketplace than actually helping you enhance your health.

Every time you take a synthetic pharmaceutical you are betting another piece of your life on a risky gamble.

Even doctors don’t know the true risks because they are grossly misinformed. Having been taught virtually nothing about nutrition in medical school, doctors are pumped full of so much
pro-pharma information that by the time they begin to practice medicine under a state license, they have actually been thoroughly de-educated about health. They probably knew more about health and healing before they entered medical school than after they graduated. Do you think that the Big Pharma funding of their curriculum played a part in that?

From the quackery of flu shots to the harmful effects of mammograms and chemotherapy, much of modern medicine is commercial fraud. Peel back the TV commercials, the brainwashing of doctors and Big Pharma’s influence over the mainstream media and you’ll find nothing but empty promises, toxic chemicals and obscene profits. The industry of modern medicine is built on scientific fraud.

What we’ve learned in the past few years is that you can’t trust medical journals because they are pushing junk science in order to please their Big Pharma advertisers.

You can’t trust the media either, since they depend upon drug money to pay salaries.

You can’t trust lawmakers because almost all of them have been bought off by Big Pharma.

And, of course, you cannot trust the government agencies like the Fraud and Drug Administration or the Federal Treachery Commission or the Centers for Deceit Control and Procrastination because they are in bed with these powerful corporations as well. Pimps, hookers and tricks! So, who can you trust?

You can trust Mother Nature! She will never ask you for a royalty on a patent.

She gives all her medicine for free and she provides the seeds, soils, rainfall, sunlight and nano- technology to construct all the medicines the human body needs.

Mother Nature is the answer to our health care problems and she will never bribe a journalist, psych doctor or lawmaker just to promote her products, which is probably why she is not so popular.

It’s no wonder then, that virtually the entire medical community has been trying to suppress Mother Nature for so long.

The FDA says that Mother Nature is incapable of creating anything useful.

After all, nutrients don’t have any positive effect on the human body, do they?

The Federal Treachery Commission says that you can’t talk about Mother Nature’s medicinal gifts or you’ll go to jail.

The medical journals say that you can’t trust Mother Nature but that you should trust in drugs.

And the drug companies insist that they are better than Mother Nature even while they scour the world seeking yet more molecules to rip off from Mother Nature again, again and again.

Mother Nature, it seems, continues to be battered by modern medicine and all its corrupt enforcers.

They don’t want you to discover the healing miracles offered by Mother Nature, you see.

That might cause you to stop playing pharmaceutical roulette with your life and leave the health casino entirely!

Gee, the horror… you might never need another pharmaceutical again!

Stay at the roulette table, they insist!

Keep betting your life on pharmaceuticals!

Keep placing poker chips on the numbers, hoping against all odds that maybe this pill will finally solve your problems.

The longer you play health care roulette, the longer the house wins!

And the House, in this case, is Big Pharma.

When you play health care roulette, you are betting against the House.

There’s one rule every gambler in Vegas learns sooner or later: The House always wins!

My eternal thanks to Mike Adams for his incredible website and endless stream of invaluable information. But, if you don’t act on it, you’ll just be another “trick”.

Aloha!

Hesh Goldstein

When I was a kid, if I were told that I’d be writing a book about diet and nutrition when I was older, let alone having been doing a health related radio show for over 36 years, I would’ve thought that whoever told me that was out of their mind. Living in Newark, New Jersey, my parents and I consumed anything and everything that had a face or a mother except for dead, rotting, pig bodies, although we did eat bacon (as if all the other decomposing flesh bodies were somehow miraculously clean). Going through high school and college it was no different. In fact, my dietary change did not come until I was in my 30′s.

Just to put things in perspective, after I graduated from Weequahic High School and before going to Seton Hall University, I had a part-time job working for a butcher. I was the delivery guy and occasionally had to go to the slaughterhouse to pick up products for the store. Needless to say, I had no consciousness nor awareness, as change never came then despite the horrors I witnessed on an almost daily basis.

After graduating with a degree in accounting from Seton Hall, I eventually got married and moved to a town called Livingston. Livingston was basically a yuppie community where everyone was judged by the neighborhood they lived in and their income. To say it was a “plastic” community would be an understatement.

Livingston and the shallowness finally got to me. I told my wife I was fed up and wanted to move. She made it clear she had to be near her friends and New York City. I finally got my act together and split for Colorado.

I was living with a lady in Aspen at the end of 1974, when one day she said, ” let’s become vegetarians”. I have no idea what possessed me to say it, but I said, “okay”! At that point I went to the freezer and took out about $ 100 worth of frozen, dead body parts and gave them to a welfare mother who lived behind us. Well, everything was great for about a week or so, and then the chick split with another guy.

So here I was, a vegetarian for a couple weeks, not really knowing what to do, how to cook, or basically how to prepare anything. For about a month, I was getting by on carrot sticks, celery sticks, and yogurt. Fortunately, when I went vegan in 1990, it was a simple and natural progression. Anyway, as I walked around Aspen town, I noticed a little vegetarian restaurant called, “The Little Kitchen”.

Let me back up just a little bit. It was April of 1975, the snow was melting and the runoff of Ajax Mountain filled the streets full of knee-deep mud. Now, Aspen was great to ski in, but was a bummer to walk in when the snow was melting.

I was ready to call it quits and I needed a warmer place. I’ll elaborate on that in a minute.

But right now, back to “The Little Kitchen”. Knowing that I was going to leave Aspen and basically a new vegetarian, I needed help. So, I cruised into the restaurant and told them my plight and asked them if they would teach me how to cook. I told them in return I would wash dishes and empty their trash. They then asked me what I did for a living and I told them I was an accountant.

The owner said to me, “Let’s make a deal. You do our tax return and we’ll feed you as well”. So for the next couple of weeks I was doing their tax return, washing their dishes, emptying the trash, and learning as much as I could.

But, like I said, the mud was getting to me. So I picked up a travel book written by a guy named Foder. The name of the book was, “Hawaii”. Looking through the book I noticed that in Lahaina, on Maui, there was a little vegetarian restaurant called,” Mr. Natural’s”. I decided right then and there that I would go to Lahaina and work at “Mr. Natural’s.” To make a long story short, that’s exactly what happened.

So, I’m working at “Mr. Natural’s” and learning everything I can about my new dietary lifestyle – it was great. Every afternoon we would close for lunch at about 1 PM and go to the Sheraton Hotel in Ka’anapali and play volleyball, while somebody stayed behind to prepare dinner.

Since I was the new guy, and didn’t really know how to cook, I never thought that I would be asked to stay behind to cook dinner. Well, one afternoon, that’s exactly what happened; it was my turn. That posed a problem for me because I was at the point where I finally knew how to boil water.

I was desperate, clueless and basically up the creek without a paddle. Fortunately, there was a friend of mine sitting in the gazebo at the restaurant and I asked him if he knew how to cook. He said the only thing he knew how to cook was enchiladas. He said that his enchiladas were bean-less and dairy-less. I told him that I had no idea what an enchilada was or what he was talking about, but I needed him to show me because it was my turn to do the evening meal.

Well, the guys came back from playing volleyball and I’m asked what was for dinner. I told them enchiladas; the owner wasn’t thrilled. I told him that mine were bean-less and dairy-less. When he tried the enchilada he said it was incredible. Being the humble guy that I was, I smiled and said, “You expected anything less”? It apparently was so good that it was the only item on the menu that we served twice a week. In fact, after about a week, we were selling five dozen every night we had them on the menu and people would walk around Lahaina broadcasting, ‘enchilada’s at “Natural’s” tonight’. I never had to cook anything else.

A year later the restaurant closed, and somehow I gravitated to a little health food store in Wailuku. I never told anyone I was an accountant and basically relegated myself to being the truck driver. The guys who were running the health food store had friends in similar businesses and farms on many of the islands. I told them that if they could organize and form one company they could probably lock in the State. That’s when they found out I was an accountant and “Down to Earth” was born. “Down to Earth” became the largest natural food store chain in the islands, and I was their Chief Financial Officer and co-manager of their biggest store for 13 years.

In 1981, I started to do a weekly radio show to try and expose people to a vegetarian diet and get them away from killing innocent creatures. I still do that show today. I pay for my own airtime and have no sponsors to not compromise my honesty. One bit of a hassle was the fact that I was forced to get a Masters Degree in Nutrition to shut up all the MD’s that would call in asking for my credentials.

My doing this radio show enabled me, through endless research, to see the corruption that existed within the big food industries, the big pharmaceutical companies, the biotech industries and the government agencies. This information, unconscionable as it is, enabled me to realize how broken our health system is. This will be covered more in depth in the Introduction and throughout the book and when you finish the book you will see this clearly and it will hopefully inspire you to make changes.

I left Down to Earth in 1989, got nationally certified as a sports injury massage therapist and started traveling the world with a bunch of guys that were making a martial arts movie. After doing that for about four years I finally made it back to Honolulu and got a job as a massage therapist at the Honolulu Club, one of Hawaii’s premier fitness clubs. It was there I met the love of my life who I have been with since 1998. She made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. She said,” If you want to be with me you’ve got to stop working on naked women”. So, I went back into accounting and was the Chief Financial Officer of a large construction company for many years.

Going back to my Newark days when I was an infant, I had no idea what a “chicken” or “egg” or “fish” or “pig” or “cow” was. My dietary blueprint was thrust upon me by my parents as theirs was thrust upon them by their parents. It was by the grace of God that I was able to put things in their proper perspective and improve my health and elevate my consciousness.

The road that I started walking down in 1975 has finally led me to the point of writing my book, “A Sane Diet For An Insane World”. Hopefully, the information contained herein will be enlightening, motivating, and inspiring to encourage you to make different choices. Doing what we do out of conditioning is not always the best course to follow. I am hoping that by the grace of the many friends and personalities I have encountered along my path, you will have a better perspective of what road is the best road for you to travel on, not only for your health but your consciousness as well.

Last but not least: after being vaccinated as a kid I developed asthma, which plagued me all of my life. In 2007 I got exposed to the organic sulfur crystals, which got rid of my asthma in 3 days and has not come back in over 10 years. That, being the tip of the iceberg, has helped people reverse stage 4 cancers, autism, joint pain, blood pressure problems, migraine headaches, erectile dysfunction, gingivitis, and more. Also, because of the detoxification effects by the release of oxygen that permeates and heals all the cells in the body, it removes parasites, radiation, fluoride, free radicals, and all the other crap that is thrust upon us in the environment by Big Business.

Playing politics with passports to the NHS | Brief letters

The government’s sudden interest in tackling health tourism (Show your passport for NHS treatment, 22 November) is a transparent distraction tactic. The unclaimed cost of treating non-entitled patients is said to be £200m, a mere 1% of the amount the government is trying to strip from the NHS budget through its ludicrous and unachievable “efficiency savings” target.
Dr Bob Bury

Last year, while staying with French friends, I fell down a short flight of steps which resulted in my going to A&E. At reception, I was asked for my passport along with my EHIC card and the usual name, address etc. It took no longer to process than any of the other information. If it can be done in France, why not here in the UK?

As students at UEA 40 years ago, my boyfriend and I had a friend in the coypu eradication unit on the Broads. From a German doctor to a Dutch nurse: Europeans playing a vital role in the NHS

Some 57,000 Europeans are employed by the NHS, and their position has looked increasingly uncertain since Britain voted to leave the EU. It’s an issue highlighted by the Institute of Public Policy Research, with the thinktank warning that the health service could collapse if those European workers left the UK. Chris Murray, who compiled the report, said: “It is critical to public health that these workers do not seek jobs elsewhere. All EU nationals who work for the NHS, or as locums in the NHS system, should be eligible to apply for British citizenship.”

So, how do European nationals working for our health service feel post-Brexit? Six of them explain.

Spanish pharmacist

Ricardo, 38, Bournemouth: ‘I am not sure how the NHS will cope without Europeans’
After Brexit, me and my wife started thinking of places to go: Spain, Scotland, Canada. My wife is Scottish and works in academia, so we need to find somewhere we could both work. I feel betrayed by the referendum vote, and in some ways it looks like we are going to be allowed to stay for as long as we are useful. This country has decided to shut its doors to globalisation – despite the fact that it’s here to stay.

In my department, more than 50% of the pharmacists come from the EU

Ricardo

I know not everyone voted for Britain to leave the EU because of immigration, but it played a huge part for a lot of people. It makes me feel unwelcome, but I like my life here: I have a great job and met my wife in Britain. My future here now seems very uncertain, which is a shame because Europeans are very important to the NHS. Just to give you an example: in my department more than 50% of the pharmacists come from the EU. Likewise, most hospitals have hired (or are hiring) nurses from Europe. I am not sure how the NHS will cope without us.

Nurse from the Netherlands

Helena, 52, Wales: ‘The way I feel now I am not sure I would even accept British citizenship’
It has now been around two months since Brexit. At the moment I still feel like I am going through the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Why should I have to apply for dual nationality and pay thousands to do so? I feel as though the goal posts have been shifted and I can no longer remain here on the same terms on which I arrived from the Netherlands in 1995. To be honest, the way I feel now I am not sure I would even accept British citizenship if offered it. I do not really feel welcome in the UK any more, and I am not sure if I will stay or go.

NHS nurse

Shortly after the referendum result was announced my husband got a letter from the university where he works to say they would support EU-citizen-staff and family members who wanted to get permanent citizenship. I have not yet heard anything from my employer, despite being an NHS nurse for more than 14 years. Maybe EU nationals are not important, but this is surprising given the high number who work here. I know that without us the NHS would be unsustainable. There is no budget, investments and slack in the NHS to grow, develop and modernise. A few weeks ago, when I was back in the Netherlands, I had to accompany a family member to hospital and the healthcare service was so much better. It feels tempting to go back home.

Quality improvement officer from Germany
Chuck, 52, London: ‘With 20 years of experience in the NHS, I have a lot to offer this country’

With 30 years of healthcare experience (20 of it in the NHS) I have a lot to offer this country. But I am one of many. We have nurses, doctors and therapists from all countries. Clinical innovation, for example, seems to be supported by high numbers of academic clinicians from Greece, Spain and Italy.

Even if we are being made to feel welcome at work, I no longer feel that welcome on on the streets

David

I am a German expat and have been living in Britain for the past two decades because I like the country, the people, the culture and the NHS. NHS executives have been very supportive and sent messages saying that European colleagues are valued, needed and welcome here. However, the government’s position is not clear, and my wife and I worry about changes in the public mood. Even if we are being made to feel welcome at work, we no longer feel that welcome on the streets. Because of this, we are thinking about leaving Britain. The referendum was the most painful reminder that I don’t have a vote in the country I live in and contribute to.

Doctor from Germany

Stephanie, 42, Portsmouth: ‘The UK can’t afford to loose more committed staff members’

I am in the process of applying for a permanent residency card, which I require if I want to apply for naturalisation (the legal act by which a non-citizen in a country may acquire citizenship). However, currently the German government only allows dual citizenship if the other country is an EU country, and I don’t want to give up my German passport – hopefully I can sort it out before Article 50 is triggered. The whole process is so complex and expensive, however, almost as though it’s designed to put people off. I am a German GP and married to a British citizen. My son already has dual nationality and I feel this is my only option.

GP treating patients

Although my primary degree is from a German university, I did my postgraduate and general practice training in the UK. There is a shortage of GPs at the moment, and Jeremy Hunt’s plan was to recruit 5,000 from abroad to solve the crisis. It is therefore vital that EU nationals working here as doctors are encouraged to stay. The UK can’t afford to lose more committed staff members.

Cardiologist from Austria

Daniel, 43, Surrey: ‘I feel upset that some of the people I treat want me out of the country’

I am already looking for positions in other European countries. Despite the fact that I love my job, my colleagues and my patients, I do not feel that this is the place for my children to grow up. Their opportunities have been taken from them, and it only looks like things will get worse.

EU nationals are critical for the NHS. I come from Austria, and many of my fellow doctors come from all over Europe. We rely on nurses from across the EU, who are all highly qualified and motivated to do their work. The UK alone simply does not have enough trained staff to keep up with the needs of its citizens, and there are too few in training programmes. The staffing problems will just get worse.

I feel upset to know that some of the people I treat want me out of “their” country. I feel that they probably call me all sorts of names behind my back. We Europeans should all work together towards a brighter future for the whole world.

Surgeon from Austria
Peter, 35, Liverpool: ‘I will serve the NHS as long as I can’

My plans, post-Brexit, are to continue serving the people of the UK via the NHS as long as the government allows me to. I would not take British citizenship now, however, if offered it. I was eligible for British citizenship 10 years ago, but I have no interest in giving up my own EU citizenship, especially after the referendum. I would not want to limit my access and rights of free movement in the EU. Working conditions in the NHS are in a steady decline, and many EU countries are opening their arms to fully trained doctors and nurses.

Two children suffer life threatening overdose from playing with painkilling skin patches

One child had stuck two patches onto their own skin thinking they were sticking plasters and another fell unconscious showing signs of an opiate overdose after picking at a patch on a user’s arm.

Both were successfully treated for opiate overdose and recovered.

Dr Sarah Branch, Deputy Director of Vigilance and Risk Management of Medicines, said: “It is extremely important when applying a fentanyl skin patch that people check that they are stuck on securely. A patch may cause serious harm if it accidentally sticks to somebody else’s skin or is swallowed.

“The used patch should be folded in half so that the adhesive side sticks firmly to itself. It should then be safely thrown away in a secure bin so that it is not picked up by young children.

“If a patch is transferred to another person, remove it and get medical help immediately. If a patch is swallowed, get medical help immediately.

“People who use fentanyl patches should be careful to keep them out of the reach and sight of children and dispose of them carefully.”

Children are more likely to suck, chew or swallow the patches and have a lower threshold for overdose than adults, it was warned.

Doctors were told to inform patients that if a patch is transferred to another person, it should be removed and the individual should get medical help immediately. If a patch is swallowed, the individual should get medical help immediately.

Record number of people in England playing sport regularly

What with the Globe Cup now underway and the Wimbledon tennis championships about to begin next week, sport is on the brain for numerous men and women across the country. But how several people really engage in the physical activities themselves?

Sport England aims to reply this query in its bi-yearly Lively People survey. Because 2005, the non-departmental public entire body under the Division for Culture, Media and Sport has been asking people in England about their sport participation.

The survey is the greatest of its kind, sampling far more than 165,000, and contains these aged over 14 (prior to 2012, the survey only incorporated people aged over 16).

In accordance to the latest information release covering April 2013 to April 2014, the variety of above-16s taking part in sport after a week, each week has risen to a record 15.6m – 1.7m a lot more than in 2005.

In the most lively nearby authorities – Hart, Richmond upon Thames, St Albans, Corby and Tunbridge Wells – about half of the individuals participate regularly in sports activities.

A lot more than 2.9m people are swimming frequently, generating it the most well-known sport in England by far. Football, athletics or cycling are element of the weekly regimen for about five out of one hundred people in England – a slight increase since last 12 months.

Importantly the variation for these ‘big sports’ between this and last year’s survey is even smaller sized than the seasonal variation in sport participation, which you can explore on the Sport England interactive tool.

Fencing, canoeing and staff sports activities such as rounders, netball and rugby union – still only played by a minority – actually acquired most in acceptance.

But there is a big gap among guys and ladies. While in excess of forty% of men exercise frequently, only 31% of ladies do. Nonetheless, the gender gap has not changed much since the Active Folks survey in 2012/13.

Jennie Price, chief executive of Sport England mentioned:

There is a lot more to do, which includes closing the unacceptable gap in participation amongst youthful males and young girls…this will be an critical focus for Sport England above the subsequent twelve months
