The Guardian view on Marine A: prevent war crimes, don’t excuse them | Editorial

When justice is done, we should be glad. But the champagne-swigging jubilation that greeted the reduction of “Marine A” Alexander Blackman’s murder conviction to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, went far beyond the acknowledgment that this was an appropriate outcome. To many of his supporters he is a “hero soldier” persecuted for shooting dead an injured Taliban fighter in Afghanistan. The judgment, however, was no exoneration: he killed a defenceless man, tried to make sure it was not witnessed, and attempted to cover up what he did. The judges considered mitigating factors, including his combat stress disorder. Nonetheless, they concluded that his crime was a severe one, that he held substantial responsibility for it, and that his dismissal from service was justified.

Drum-beating coverage of “our brave boys” veils the fact that British troops, like any others, are capable of terrible violations of the laws of war and the dictates of basic decency. Perhaps the catastrophe of Iraq, and the consciousness of the toll it took overwhelmingly on Iraqi civilians but also on coalition forces, has sensitised the public to the immense pressures facing soldiers and the often limited support they receive. More often than not, such abuses occur when there is an absence or failure of leadership. Another marine – briefly Blackman’s commanding officer – described the leadership and oversight in place as shockingly bad, and insisted he was not a single rotten apple. The answer is not to give soldiers a free pass to abuse and kill by attacking attempts to hold them to account, but to ask who else is responsible and how such behaviour can be prevented in future.

Blackman knowingly broke the rules of war (“I just broke the Geneva convention,” he told comrades). These are not a matter of etiquette, but morality; not a luxury, but a necessity. It is precisely because of the extremity of the situation, and the pressures upon troops, that clear rules are needed. They protect both civilians and soldiers. It took more than a century of campaigning to establish such standards. That they have often been ignored is a reason to uphold them vigorously, not to lower them.

It is not only that the end cannot justify the means. Believing that it can often leads to a different end, whether on the soil of Afghanistan or in the skies over Mosul. The fight against Islamic State there has seen a frightening acceleration of civilian casualties. Too many Iraqis and Syrians are dying in coalition strikes that are supposed to save them; and that fact, besides causing untold tragedy, is likely to fuel future radicalisation.

The increase in deaths began in the last weeks of the Obama administration – around the time that procedures were changed to make calling in strikes easier – but has gathered pace. It may reflect a tactical change in response to the heavy punishment that Iraqi forces took as they reclaimed eastern Mosul; and, around Raqqa, perhaps poor on-the-ground intelligence. But many fear that the Trump administration’s announcement of a review of the rules of engagement has been enough to lower the threshold in reality.

Western intervention in recent wars has been couched largely in moral terms. Intentions are not enough. Blackman told the fighter he killed: “It’s nothing you wouldn’t do to us.” But being better than the Taliban, let alone Isis, is no kind of baseline.

Marine Phytoplankton – A Complete Super Food!

What is it?

Identified in the upper and surface waters of oceans and bodies of fresh water, marine phytoplankton are single-celled organisms, a.k.a. “micro-algae,” at the quite bottom of the food chain. They feed on virtually all ocean life and, immediately and indirectly, all lifestyle on earth. By means of the process of photosynthesis, marine phytoplankton produce virtually ninety % of the Earth’s oxygen and soak up most of the Earth’s carbon dioxide, also making important nutrients and energy in the approach. Marine phytoplankton is a super-nutrient a very bio-offered supply of nutritional vitamins and minerals. There are only four species advantageous for human consumption- with the Nannochloropsis oculata strain getting most beneficial.  PhytOriginal is the only identified product in the US that sells reside Nanochlropsis ocucalta marine algae.

Well being Positive aspects

At microscopic sizes, marine phytoplankton is very bioavailable. The organism has a cell wall that is instantly digested and absorbed, exactly where its valuable nutrient content material is readily offered to the physique. In reality, “all the vital amino and essential fatty acids (nano-sized) are in a position to pass via the blood-brain barrier and nourish your brain straight,” which could end result in obvious brain-wellness positive aspects. Since of this, marine phytoplankton can also advantage your mood and avoid and treat depression!

The single-cell, microscopic marine phytoplankton have proved useful for critically and chronically unwell populations. Whilst it could take weeks to months for medicine usage, overall health benefits are apparent right after only a couple of days of taking marine phytoplankton. The single-cell organism bypasses the liver and digestive method, enabling the physique to heal itself much more rapidly! Simply because marine phytoplankton is a single supply of all raw resources needed, in close to best proportions, this unheard of healing fee is achievable.

The unusual and total superfood exists as a single supply for raw materials, or creating blocks, for new wholesome cells. The organism gives: neuro-chemical substances which includes dopamine and serotonin, all of the crucial amino acids, crucial fatty acids, nutritional vitamins including vitamin A, carotenoids, some varieties of vitamin B, key minerals like selenium, zinc, magnesium, chromium, strontium, and iodine, trace elements, rare anti-oxidants, phospholipids, electrolytes, nucleic acids, chlorophyl (a digestion regulator), enzymes and co-enzymes. “In an age of above-reliance on land-based mostly meals sources and continuing mineral depletion in the soil and in our foods which, in turn, leads to deficiencies of micro-nutrients and trace components in our bodies,” marine phytoplankton supplies these essential and trace minerals the contemporary physique is deprived of. Additional, the organism balances the body’s very own pH, an frequently ignored health benefit. Its alkaline pH of eight-eight.five helps offset the acidity of today’s standard diet, higher in sugary processed foods.

Overall health positive aspects incorporate but are not constrained to:

-Enhanced power and elevated oxygen uptake allows the blood to carry around far more oxygen to the body’s organ systems and muscle groups, in flip, escalating exercising edurance and stamina

-A loaded source of naturally-created vitamins and minerals

-Increased immunity

-Elevated psychological and emotional properly currently being, enhanced capability to focus (loaded with Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids)

-Substantial amounts of antioxidants that could support protect towards aging and oxidation

-Anti-inflammatory nutrients aid aid metabolic process and detoxification

-Reduced cholesterol ranges

-Helps reverse results of hypothyroidis

Jordan Markuson is the Founder of Aqua Overall health Labs. He has been a nutritionist, author and entrepreneur for in excess of ten many years. He is an activist supporting consumption of raw, renewable, and organic food items. Jordan believes that based on all accessible scientific evidence, after meals is cooked it loses the bulk of its important nutrients. He is quite interested in marine-primarily based phytoplankton as a fish oil replacement due to the fact of the pure omega-3 EPA &amp DHA fatty acid it produces.
