General Motors is generating it safer for youngsters to ride in the rear seat of its midsize pickup trucks with a basic but efficient feature that debuts on the 2015 GMC Canyon and 2015 Chevrolet Colorado, set to go on sale this fall.
Usually, midsize pickups with an extended cab have a pair of truncated rear seats, since there isn’t ample room to include typical ones in the back. The difficulty is, the seat cushions are not prolonged enough to completely support the base of most auto seats for kids, which can make them unstable and much less effective at safeguarding these passengers in a crash.
To resolve that dilemma, GM engineers designed a way to lengthen the lower cushion of the rear passenger-side leap seat in the Canyon and Colorado basically by getting rid of the head rest and reattaching it to the front of the seat cushion. (See the video beneath for a demonstration.)
“The added seat cushion length provides much more help to the youngster restraint, which aids to lessen the rotation and the risk of damage in a crash,” says Eduardo Bugelli, GM safety efficiency crew lead. A patent on the style of the seat extender is pending.
GM says the Canyon and Colorado will be the 1st pickups to provide this kind of a function. They also will be the first midsize pickups to provide forward collision warning and lane departure warning, two superior safety attributes that are component of an optional Driver Alert Package.
Given that pickups are more and more used as everyday passenger cars, rather than just as perform trucks, these types of security features are turning out to be far more essential to consumers, who are carting youngsters all around in them far more so than in the previous.
The Canyon and Colorado will come in 3 entire body variations. Only the extended cab model with a six-foot cargo bed will get the seat extender, which will come as a normal function. Two crew cab versions, one with a 5-foot and one particular with a 6-foot bed, have full-size back seats that don’t need it.
In contrast to the complete-size truck market place, which domestic automakers dominate, GM is the only American business presently generating a midsize pickup truck. Both Chrysler and Ford have ceded the market place to Japanese automakers Nissan and Toyota, whose Frontier and Tacoma are best sellers.
But GM sees an opportunity: Full-size pickup owners who like having a truck and don’t make use of its rugged abilities may possibly be searching to downsize if it saves them money and fuel. That is the place the all-new GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado come in.
They are smaller and lighter than the complete-size Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, and they offer an productive 4-cylinder engine. A V6 and turbo-diesel also will be offered, with the latter coming for the 2016 model year.
However they are corporate twins, the two new midsize models target different kinds of customers. The GMC Canyon, which debuted at the 2014 Detroit automobile show, is meant for small-company owners and other specialist consumers, whereas the Chevy Colorado, which debuted at the 2013 Los Angeles car present, is geared toward outdoorsy sorts.
