In praise of ... gradualism | Editorial

At initial sight it is absurd that the NHS is thinking about funding any organisation that can credibly promise to help fat men and women minimize their fat by a mere 3% above a yr. What is the use of fiddling with grams of unwanted fat when the burden is measured in kilos? Either obesity is a difficulty serious ample to warrant social intervention on the scale that smoking has had, or else the concern with it is a fatuous moral panic, in which situation nothing should be accomplished at all. In truth, though, this proposal marks a praiseworthy outbreak of unhysterical gradualism. Dropping a tiny fat is much better than shedding none, or gaining it, and even a reduction of three% has measurably beneficial effects. It is also, realistically, as significantly as most people will handle in excess of a yr. Shedding weight, like so much else, is largely a matter of self-discipline, and that is in itself a matter of incremental enhancements. We welcome this return to the wisdom of the Fabians.
