Infant to undergo blood transfusions in spite of objection of Jehovah"s Witnesses mothers and fathers

Detail emerged in a written ruling following a hearing in the Family members Division of the Substantial Court in London.

”Their objection is on the basis of their religious beliefs as Jehovah’s Witnesses and they can’t consent to (their son) getting blood goods in the course of or subsequent to the surgical treatment. I completely understand and sympathise with the stance of these mother and father,” said Mr Justice Keehan.

”Standing back and hunting at (the baby’s) welfare best interests, I am in no doubt whatsoever that it is in his very best interests to undergo the surgical procedure that is proposed.”

He extra: ”On the basis that that is my view, it is inevitable that he have to get blood transfusions throughout the course of or subsequent to the surgical treatment.

”Accordingly, I am yet again of the view, notwithstanding the parents’ understandable objections on religious grounds, that it is in (his) welfare very best interests to obtain blood goods both for the duration of the surgery and, if required, subsequent to it.”
