Mindfulness: take a stroll to savour nature and quiet the mind

The group walk along the seaside (JAY WILLIAMS)

For the previous year, Radford has run mindfulness and wild camping weekends in remote components of Snowdonia National Park. The Anglesey walks are a new, far more accessible addition, geared in the direction of coastal lovers. They are also a glorious haven for wild flowers, butterflies, lichen, moss and bird existence.

For this expedition, Radford suggests we walk in comprehensive silence. That’s fine by me, but as I hike via the spiky tufts of marram grass, my mind, annoyingly, is whirring like a substantial-speed fan about to fly off its hinges. Nonetheless, I soon hear a sweet trilling and spot a skylark overhead. On the periphery, I glimpse the forest fringe. Underfoot, I pause to inspect wild thyme and what looks like an absurdly big parasol mushroom. Would I have observed all of this had I been deep in conversation? It’s unlikely. Thankfully, ahead of prolonged my thoughts slips into a quieter gear.

Strolling in silence with a group is a special and oddly bonding expertise. Initial, you have the space in which to savour your surroundings. Then, when you regroup, the pleasure of becoming with each other is amplified, the conversation more compelling, the sharing of meals a lot more of an occasion.

Interspersed with the hiking are pauses to collect in a circle and “check-in” as Radford puts it, with different practices. These consist of focusing on the breath, sensory awareness workouts, and a fun, beachcomber model of “show and tell” – to help us draw our interest back to the current lest it has strayed, say to the pub. If this type of activity and sharing helps make you recoil in horror, rest assured, it is entirely optional.

Our group is forthcoming and enthusiastic. “It makes getting outside an remarkable encounter, permitting you the time and room to recognize the minute detail in almost everything: the dew drops on a cobweb, the veins on a leaf, the millions of shades of green in the grasses,” says Helli Gittens, a business growth officer who first came to a mindfulness course six years ago, following remedy for breast cancer.

Closer to the seashore, on the dunes, we file previous a herd of sturdy Welsh mountain ponies. I’m struck by how they embody the calm alertness we’re aspiring to. We edge past them gently, beyond another ridge and there it is: Llanddwyn – locally recognized as Newborough seaside – one of the most scenic areas in the country. To 1 side are the peaks of Snowdonia Nationwide Park and to the other is the lighthouse on Llanddwyn, a tidal island.

There’s a stiff breeze and the waves are thrashing towards the shore. Clouds hover moodily, and the pebbles planted in the sand appear jewel-like.

I savour the pristine silence. If the aim of mindfulness is to heighten awareness of my surroundings, it’s working.
