Don’t cry over spilt milk, make loo roll out of it
A premium-priced toilet roll made from waste milk will be hitting Italian supermarket shelves amid the Christmas paraphernalia this winter.
Carezza di Latte – which translates as “milk caress” – is a collaboration between German fabric innovators Qmilk and Italian company Lucart, one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of paper and tissue products.
Qmilk made a name for itself a few years ago after developing hypoallergenic cloth woven from fibres that are made from a protein extracted from soured milk. Now the company has taken the original technology and adapted it to produce non-woven materials, making it possible to make loo roll.
“It’s dermatologically very good,” says Anke Domaske, a microbiologist and Qmilk’s founder. “It should be okay for people with allergies, even lactose intolerance, because even though you can technically eat it there’s no lactose inside it.”
The idea for Qmilk came about after Domaske’s stepfather was diagnosed with cancer. In the search for non-chemically treated clothing to support her stepfather’s weakened immune system – the global textiles industry is renowned for its use of potentially toxic chemicals, including hormone disruptors and heavy metals – Domaske found an unexpected solution in the form of sour milk.
“When milk turns sour, you have whey at the bottom and a solid at the top. Remove the whey and you have cottage cheese, which we dry to a protein powder. Then we put this in a sort of noodle machine, add water and make a sort of cookie dough. Then we work it through to produce fine fibres.”
Domaske estimates that Germany alone disposes of about 2m tonnes of milk per year. This isn’t excess milk that has gone off but milk that cannot be sold to start with, for example because a cow has been unwell or because it has been treated with an antibiotic that has a withdrawal period.
The Qmilk business model is based on repurposing some of this waste milk. The company currently uses 1,000 tonnes of waste milk per year sourced from half a dozen farms local to Qmilk’s factory, and pays about four cents a litre for the waste milk.
“It’s not as much as for regular milk, but still good for farmers because they don’t have to throw their product away,” says Domaske. At present, Qmilk does not foresee any issues upscaling its model because waste milk is abundant globally.
From a design perspective, the notion of extracting value from a waste product is an exciting one, says Andrew Walters, director of research at design consultancy PDR on behalf of the organisation’s Ecodesign Group.
“However,” adds Walters, “there is a danger that if this took off more milk production could be directed this way, which would be worse for the environment than a well managed forest.”
While Qmilk manufactures the milk waste fibres, it is Qmilk’s customers, such as Lucart, that turn those fibres into fabrics, yarn or paper. Around the world, about 270,000 trees a day are flushed down the drain or end up as waste in the form of chemically-treated toilet paper, according to WWF.
For Domaske, the ability to create products such as loo roll is just the start now that the company has perfected its non-woven technology. It’s the difference between having seven production steps or one, says Domaske. With that in mind, the company is now exploring many other uses for Qmilk’s fibres. Milk waste shoes anyone?

MPs back fresh curbs on "misleading" formula milk marketing claims
A Scottish National party MP has received unanimous Commons backing for new legislation to curb “misleading and scientifically questionable claims” around the marketing of formula milk for babies.
Alison Thewliss introduced her proposal, which has cross-party support, via the 10-minute rule in the House of Commons on Wednesday. After gaining parliamentary approval with no opposition, she can now bring a draft bill for legislation governing the marketing of replacement breast milk products into line with World Health Organisation policy for a second reading before parliament in February.
Although the WHO introduced an international marketing code more than 30 years ago to prevent aggressive practices in formula milk promotion, the UK has never fully implemented it.
Thewliss, MP for Glasgow Central, said legislation was needed to tackle a legal loophole that allows “scientifically questionable” claims about the health benefits of formula milk to be printed in reputable medical and nursing journals.
Thewliss said: “I believe it is vitally important that parents get accurate information on the contents of formula milk, and the best way to prepare it safely. At present there is a worrying lack of independent scrutiny of infant and young child formula, as well as growing frustration about the industry marketing tricks and misleading claims being pushed on parents and health professionals alike.”
The move, which is backed by the chair of the Commons health select committee, the Conservative Dr Sarah Wollaston, has also drawn support from midwives.
Gillian Smith, director of the Royal College of Midwives Scotland, said that, as an MP for a city centre constituency where breastfeeding rates were low and health outcomes poor, Thewliss was to be congratulated.
Smith added that the UK as a whole continued to have higher rates of formula feeding than many other European countries. “I do think adverts for follow-on milk do influence mothers. We are not bad at initiating breastfeeding, but not so good at sustaining it, and there is a significant drop-off by six months,” she said.
While the benefits of breastfeeding in protecting infants from infection and diseases have been shown in countless clinical trials, there are still many instances when formula milk may often be safer or help to resolve nutrient deficiencies.
Thewliss insisted she came to the debate “with absolutely no judgment or attempt to tell other parents how to feed their children”.
She said: “I understand there is a genuine and sincere requirement for infant formula milk for mothers who can’t or indeed don’t wish to breastfeed, and any number of circumstances which lead parents and carers to choose formula.”

Tasmanian devil milk could kill golden staph and other antibiotic-resistant bugs
Milk from Tasmanian devils could kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria like golden staph and potentially combat the deadly facial tumour disease that has killed 80% of the wild devil population in the past 20 years.
According to research led by Sydney University PhD student Emma Peel, milk produced by the marsupials contains antimicrobial peptides called cathelicidins which had been tested as being effective against a number of pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or golden staph.
“These peptides are killing superbugs, so there is potential for future development into antibiotics,” Peel told the ABC.
“That is the next step for our research, to see if these peptides have anti-cancer potential, if they are killing superbugs maybe they could kill the facial tumour.”
Peel said the tests were done with artificial peptides made by extracting the cathelicidin sequence from the devil’s genome.
The artificial peptides also tested as between three and six times more effective against some fungal infections than anti-fungal medication.
Milking the famously aggressive animals was a process to be undertaken “very, very carefully and with a lots of safety gear,” Peel said.
Androo Kelly, owner and director of Trowunna Wildlife park in northern Tasmania, which has bred 16 generations of devils, said it could be done but “I don’t think you would set up a dairy”.
He tried his hand at milking devils in the 1990s for an earlier series of research by University of Tasmania associate professor Menna Jones.
“The devils that we have, we have mothers with young that are also used to being handled, so it’s a simple thing that when the mothers are lactating you just squeeze the milk out,” he said. “It was more of a once off, it would not be a common practice.”
Kelly said the research answered the longstanding question of why young devils did not contract the highly contagious devil facial tumour disease from infected mothers. It also explained how the immature young, which are born at just 3mm long and mature in the pouch, survive without a mature immune system.
“I really believed that the solution to the devils disease was something within them … this is only further supporting that,” he said.
Devil facial tumour disease was first reported in 1996 and spread to cover 95% of Tasmania, prompting an international breeding program to save the animal.
Recent research found the carrion-eating marsupials had already evolved a degree of resistance to the disease, which is caused by two of only four strains of viral cancer to be found in the wild.
Researchers in Hobart have also developed a vaccine and begun releasing vaccinated devils into areas believed to be free of the disease.

Harvard Scientist Urges People To Stop Drinking Low Fat Milk
Low fat dairy might seem like the ideal choice to retain in your diet, but it’s far from being the healthy option. A Harvard scientist, David Ludwig, is urging individuals to be aware of the dangers of low fat milk. He claims it is better to go back to the full-bodied variety, and here are the reasons why.
Obesity
There’s word going around that full-fat milk can make you gain weight – which is why a lot of people are going for ‘skim-slim’ milk. Studies show, however, that this is not true. There’s actually a benefit in using full-fat milk in that those who consume full-fat often have an easier time maintaining their weight.
Heart Problems
Full-fat milk also contains a healthy dose of phytanic acid, which helps maintain insulin levels and blood pressure. There’s also conjugated linolic acid in the milk known for reducing the risks of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Consume this on a daily basis and you’ll be able to lower the risks of these 4 common health issues all at once.
Special Vitamins
Some vitamins and minerals are hard to come by in a person’s typical diet. These include retinol and vitamin K2 which are known as fat-soluble vitamins. They’re available through full-fat milk though, and should make your diet more comprehensive.
Dental Health
When it comes to healthier teeth and gums, milk is often a cited ‘must’ in your diet. Unfortunately, teeth health is only benefited through full-fat milk.
Drinking the skim variety won’t really give you any type of benefit. At least nowhere near what full-fat can provide. If you’re partial to low-fat chocolate milk, that actually makes things worse. The blended variety already contains loads of sugar which would only promote tooth decay.
What About Calcium?
There’s no question that both skim milk and full-fat milk contain calcium for better bone health. Hence, if you’re drinking milk primarily for this purpose, then the need to ‘switch’ may not be as prevalent. Bear in mind, however, that calcium is a relatively common mineral in various types of food.
Green and leafy vegetables are packed with calcium in amounts definitely higher than milk. The unique properties of full-fat however, are better than skim milk and should be taken into account, and if you’re going to drink one, it makes sense to choose the type that offers more with each gulp.
Saturated Fats
It’s a common mistake to think that ‘full fat’ as written in milk is the same as the ‘fat’ that’s attached to the body. They’re two completely different things and saturated fats which can be found in full-fat milk are actually desirable.
Replacing saturated fats with ‘alternatives’ can lead to various problems such as increased instances of obesity, lower amounts of good cholesterol, increased bad cholesterol, and increased chances of coronary heart disease.
So when scientists talk about the benefits of milk, they’re actually talking about the full-fat variety. Simply put, the dangers of low fat dairy involve doing yourself out of numerous vitamins and minerals. Bear in mind though that ‘low fat’ isn’t limited to milk as there are also cheese products advertised under the same label.

Research: Females with breast cancer of the milk duct could want much less therapy
Ladies who are handled for what has come to be regarded a non-invasive breast cancer of the milk duct could require significantly less remedy – not much more – a new research of much more than one hundred,000 girls signifies.
The examine, which seems in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Oncology this week, found that girls handled for ductal carcinoma in situ, a group of abnormal cells located in the milk duct, had been not substantially less probably to die of breast cancer than girls on regular. Some individuals who acquired radiation treatment truly fared worse, particularly if the treatment was on the left side.
“What this examine tells us is that our treatment method of DCIS is so good that hardly ever does anybody who ever has DCIS die from it, or certainly their death price is the actual very same as men and women who really don’t have DCIS,” stated Dr Otis Brawley, chief medical officer at the American Cancer Society. “Either we’re incredibly very good at treating this condition, or we’re treating a condition that often doesn’t need to have to be handled.”
Connected: Day-to-day glass of wine raises threat of breast cancer in females
Perhaps most substantial for girls diagnosed with DCIS, the variation in survival amongst mastectomies and lumpectomies was not considerable – meaning daily life-altering double mastectomies have been no more efficient than little lumpectomies in terms of survival.
DCIS accounts for up to 25% of mammography-detected breast cancer diagnoses. Celebrity chef Sandra Lee is maybe the ideal known girls to just lately come forward with a diagnosis.
Whilst the research and an accompanying editorial recommend clinicians use less remedy, it also raises the possibility that DCIS has a lot more in frequent with invasive cancers than previously imagined. Researchers stated it’s not clear to what extent a breast cancer diagnosis after DCIS is a consequence of a recurrence, or whether or not DCIS has a high prospective to be malignant from the outset.
The findings are probably to intensify debate – and research – of DCIS. In the last ten years, doctors have named to get rid of the word carcinoma (cancer) from the disease’s identify, even as intensified efforts to detect cancer early have enhanced a emphasis on calcium deposits in the breasts, exactly where such “pre-cancerous” cells are often discovered. Prior to screening was widespread, DCIS accounted for just three% of all breast cancer diagnoses.
The examine analyzed data from 18 large databases, spanning from rural Georgia to Los Angeles to Alaska. The databases, identified as the surveillance, epidemiology and finish final results databases or SEER, track outcomes and remedies without having utilizing patient’s identities, and cover approximately 28% of the American population.
Associated: Cancer survival costs 3 instances larger with early diagnosis
Researchers isolated a lot more than one hundred,000 females who had been diagnosed with DCIS, also known as stage zero breast cancer, and in contrast their 10- and 20-year mortality costs against females from the standard population had died of breast cancer.
Researchers located that for all but a minority of youthful girls diagnosed with DCIS, those taken care of aggressively with mastectomies or lumpectomies in mixture with radiation have been no less likely than females on common to die of breast cancer after 20 many years. Medical authorities consider this as an successful price that is so higher, it calls into question regardless of whether treatment is impacting outcomes.
“We’re not suggesting a do-nothing at all, wait-and-see technique. We’re suggesting that the standard therapy – the fundamental therapy would be to just remove the [cells by way of a] lumpectomy,” explained Dr Steven A Narod, the lead researcher on the study. Researchers were based at the Women’s School Hospital in Toronto, Canada and Toronto University.
Researchers reported several, seemingly contradictory findings. Narod’s crew concluded that DCIS has a lot more in typical with invasive breast cancers than previously thought, since localized therapies this kind of as lumpectomies, mastectomies and radiation treatment don’t appear to have a substantial impact on mortality.
Since of that, researchers concluded that for all but substantial chance patients treatment method less aggressive remedies ought to be considered by clinicians, such as lumpectomies alone.
Higher danger individuals were recognized as these diagnosed younger than forty (which researchers recommended could constitute a various disease), black females and people whose DCIS exams positive for HER2, a protein which can boost the growth of cancerous cells.
“You shouldn’t truly feel like you have a ticking time-bomb in your breast and your lifestyle is in excess of,” said Brawley. “You truly feel for the huge amount of women who are diagnosed with DCIS who actually are concerned that they have breast cancer, and that name is so intimidating. It really does make it sound like it’s something of far greater threat than it in fact is.”

Lifestyle coach: will a glass of warm milk support me rest?
There are also a few things to keep away from. Whilst a snack can support you rest, a hefty meal can trigger discomfort and impair rest, as can fatty or spicy foods. A nightcap is traditional, but try to steer clear of alcohol ahead of bed, as although it can make you drowsy and help you fall asleep, you are most likely to wake later on and struggle to get back to sleep, major to a extremely restless night.
As well much caffeine can also maintain you awake, specially if you do not usually eat a whole lot. Some folks are more sensitive to caffeine than other people but this can adjust above time, with numerous people locating it stops them sleeping more as they get older.
Try herbal merchandise this kind of as camomile tea instead, and a dash of lavender oil on your pillow may also aid. Ultimately, make positive you are obtaining adequate physical exercise, as it has been shown that exercising for the duration of the day can assist you rest better and for longer at evening.
Clearing earwax
Q: I am 80 years outdated and am incredibly match but suffer from earwax. Occasionally I can’t hear the tv, doorbell or mobile phone, and I struggle possessing a conversation. I want to have my ears syringed each and every ten to twelve weeks. I have attempted applying olive oil ear drops each and every day, but to no avail. I am creating to you for aid as a last resort.
Doreen Brown, by e-mail
A: Dr Dan Rutherford writes
There are no dependable and protected property ear-syringing approaches, but oil application does soften the wax and make syringing at the surgery less difficult, so it’s well worth persevering. Yet another option is Cerumol ear drops, which have been all around for decades but I believe are even now the ideal for residence use. They may even liquefy the wax sufficient for it to run out on its own. Nevertheless, by no means put any drops into an ear with a perforated eardrum or into a unpleasant ear except if you have it checked by a physician first.
Never use cotton buds, as they drive the wax farther down the ear and can injury the eardrum, even though ear candles are pure quackery, and are harmful.
Eventually you could uncover that your regular date with the practice nurse can be created significantly less often, but perhaps not totally averted.
BLISTERINGLY Extended WALKS
Q: On lengthy-distance walks, latterly the Cotswolds Way, my son-in-law, though otherwise relatively match, has delayed us because of blisters on his feet. He has tried my Army schedule of plastering on Vaseline beneath his socks. This aids, but does not remedy the issue. Whilst I am empathetic that his generation is not as hardy as mine, could you please supply some suggestions to enable him to maintain up with his aged father-in-law?
Ray Marsh, Winchester
A: Dr Dan Rutherford
The most widespread trigger of blisters on extended walks is boots that do not match. What may possibly seem to be relaxed in a quick tour of the shoe store may possibly show to be inadequate when place to the genuine test. Usually get strolling boots from an experienced outdoor retailer, ideally one particular that will allow you try the boots indoors at house for a day or two. They should be tested for match not just on the flat but also on steep ramps, up and downhill, which are when shear forces on the skin turn into obvious.
Fit does not constantly equate with price tag, so be prepared to discard problem boots, even if costly, and consider various sock thickness and supplies. Check out the skin carefully for any sign of athlete’s foot (redness, flaking, itch among the toes) or infections such as pitted keratolysis (white skin patches and little pits on the fat-bearing regions of the soles), as these can weaken the skin. Seek advice from a podiatrist or your GP if you are unsure.
Hydrocolloid plasters, offered in any pharmacy, are the greatest cover for any blisters that you do happen to get, and can often assist to maintain you strolling on.
Tony Gallagher writes:
Just as you wouldn’t run a marathon without training, preparation is important right here, and you must train effectively prior to a lengthy walk, to give your physique, and your feet, a opportunity to prepare for the battles ahead. Start off with an hour or two and steadily construct up prior to tackling any quite lengthy walks.
When you are on the stroll itself, evident sources of friction, which can lead to blisters, are individuals annoying tiny stones and bits of gravel that get into shoes. Soldiering on and ignoring them will only lead to difficulties, so always quit and consider them out.
You may possibly have observed that in the running planet these days there is a trend for minimalist-help sneakers, which work on the notion that the foot evolved when mankind walked barefoot, for that reason blisters are a outcome of using unnatural foot-coverings. The logical conclusion to this is that going barefoot is the best way to steer clear of blisters, but as it wouldn’t be suggested to go walking the Cotswolds Way in this manner, it displays that the proper shoes are critical.
Sizing is essential. You clearly want a shoe that is not too large, triggering the foot to slide all around, and not too modest, which invites problems. Make confident the shoe is the right width, as well.
To avoid your feet slipping all around in your new shoes, I would recommend you tie the shoe in this precise way, which minimises foot movement.
With your sneakers sorted, it’s time for socks, which can be the single biggest supply of blisters. Wool socks are greatest averted, as they soon mat from grime or sweat, creating unevenness that prospects to friction on the skin, causing the blisters. A single great idea is to put on a pair of thick socks with a thinner pair beneath, as thinner socks are less complicated to dry. Some authorities suggest polypropylene inner socks for long walks, as it is claimed they can wick sweat away from the skin, and surely dry a lot quicker than wool. Sweat and other varieties of moisture, from puddles and snow to rivers, are key enemies of walkers. Match the footwear to the problems, and make certain you truly search following your boots. If you’re strolling in snow, consider wearing gaiters, to prevent bits of snow falling inside the boot, and to preserve your feet dry.
One more excellent piece of suggestions is that if you’re crossing a stream, consider your socks off, put your boots on to cross, then, when you’re safely on the other side, dry your feet completely prior to putting your socks and boots back on.
Some walkers also locate that washing their feet in the morning ahead of a walk softens the skin, which can assist blisters create, so try out to avoid this.
If, in spite of all the guidance, your son-in-law even now gets blisters, the usual 1st-support suggestions is not to lance them, as this can lead to infection.

PETA: Milk Linked To Scary Autism And Vegan Is Your Only Hope
PETA, that bastion of accurate science and sensible remedies to the world’s ills, has supplied up an new evergreen campaign called “Got autism?” in which they assert that milk is linked to autism.
Milk. Autism.
In the annals of All the Issues Linked to Autism, PETA may well effectively have bested the greatest with this one particular. They are employing a neurobiological situation, one that at least 1% of the population–milk-consuming or otherwise–has, and striving to encourage their typically impractical agenda. But that is not all they’re undertaking.
Taking a page from the Autism Speaks playbook, PETA goes deep with the offense on this. In their fervor to defend cows from becoming milked and to make consumption of animal merchandise search like the work of Lucifer instead of hungry, omnivorous primates, they failed to recognize that they are campaigning on the backs of individuals. Individuals with autism. Pro tip, PETA: It’s not a good idea to demonize folks with disabilities to even more your result in.
Dairy Month (Photo credit: USDAgov)
Here’s what they say in their campaign, which attributes a bowl of Cheerios-like cereal, the little Os sadly forming an unhappy encounter in a sea of milk. If my milk:cereal ratio have been that off, I’d be sad, also. They’ve presently heard how offensive it is … so significantly so that the authentic 2008 billboard featuring the campaign was removed. What did PETA have to say about that? They are defiant and proud and continue the campaign in an undated report on their web site.
What do the people at PETA know about autism? Attempt these on for size:
Autism is a brain disorder … typically marked by anti-social habits like screaming…
PETA has developed a billboard to alert the public to the connection in between this devastating ailment and dairy-item consumption.
In amongst all of the screaming and currently being devastating, “many autistic kids” increase ‘dramatically’ on a dairy-cost-free diet program, PETA asserts. They cite a review of 20 youngsters (but really do not give a reference) and one more “from Rome” in which children showed “marked improvement” soon after getting taken off of dairy items.
Two research, neither of which is specified. We really don’t know the design. We really do not know if much more than casein was eliminated from the diet, but most scientific studies addressing diet and autism target on the GFCF (gluten-free of charge/casein-free) diet programs that a lot of dad and mom of autistic young children swear by. There is no way to stake enhancements to a reduce in dairy when other elements are getting eliminated, as properly. Cherry-selecting research aside, the aggregate of outcomes addressing dietary limitations, such as elimination of casein or gluten, and the effects on autism symptoms stays mixed, at greatest. The greatest managed scientific studies uncover no impact.
And then, in the grand tradition of all pseudoscience, following offering no references or clear proof of their assertion of a dairy-autism link, they move on to testimonials. “Heart-wrenching” ones, of course, simply because of the screaming and the devastation. But it doesn’t cease there. These are World wide web testimonials about the “disease.”
Regardless of the cause, testimonials show that several men and women with this ailment may be ready to discover relief with a simple dietary change—removing milk from their diet plan. The World wide web is made up of numerous heart-wrenching stories from mothers and fathers of little ones who had suffered the worst results of autism for many years just before dairy foods had been eliminated from their children’s diets.
They then give us a single mother’s story that pins behavioral exacerbation to a switch from soy formula to dairy, evidently not aware of the common allergenic overlap between soy milk and cow’s milk.
After expressing how unsurprising it is that dairy products “worsen this illness,” PETA claims that cow’s milk is “strongly” linked to cancer, Crohn’s illness, and other serious overall health problems … that really do not have something to do with autism, but why get all scientific about it now? Oh, let’s go ahead. Steven Novella offers the suitable scientific proof, which truly suggests a protective effect of milk against some cancers and preliminary and limited proof linking dairy and Crohn’s. I guess it depends on what your definition of “strongly” is. PETA’s definition of a powerful hyperlink appears to be “occurs in the very same sentence.” In that case, allow me assert that PETA’s whole anti-dairy, anti-autistic campaign is strongly pseudoscientific.
They close with a kicker:
Any individual who wants to alleviate or keep away from the devastating results of autism must give cow’s milk the boot and switch to healthful vegan options rather.
That reads to me like they are promising that avoiding milk will avoid autism. In other phrases, a significantly less-than-subtle hint that milk brings about autism, or at least its “devastating results.”
Confident, go vegan. Men and women I know who are vegans report enhanced overall health. Campaign for folks to go vegan. Even try out some science on people indicating that veganism can increase some health endpoints. But don’t use at least one% of our population as a dread element to urge folks to your lead to. Don’t weight the already burdened backs of autistic men and women by characterizing them as devastating, screaming monsters whose only salvation lies in following your urgings to give up dairy. You have some science on your side, PETA, supporting veganism as a healthful choice. Use that. Do not use autistic people.

Raw Milk? A Fresh Glass Of Campylobacter And Salmonella. Yum.
Occasionally it is astonishing how ignorant individuals can be. Now it is the turn of followers of “raw milk,” a new fad that is sweeping the U.S.
I nonetheless don’t forget reading milk cartons as a kid, and asking my mothers and fathers what “pasteurized” meant. Although I really do not bear in mind precisely what they stated, I’m positive they informed me that it produced the milk risk-free by killing bacteria. Even as a child, I understood that bacteria in my milk were most likely a bad factor.
Louis Pasteur is one of the most renowned scientists in background, and rightly so. In 1862, he invented the process of heating milk to destroy the bacteria in it. Pasteurization, as we now phone it, has saved hundreds of thousands of lives in the 150 many years because. Pasteur also created the initial vaccine for rabies. He was a real giant.

Followers of raw milk appear to be stunningly unaware of Pasteur’s achievements, and equally ignorant of the dangers of bacterial infections. Several of the overall health and safety claims for raw milk can be identified on websites this kind of as RealMilk.com, a site that is chock total of:
- Conspiracy theories: the Government is hiding the truth from you.
- Denialism: raw milk by no means hurt anyone, and even protects you towards bacteria.
- Shifting the blame: infections are brought on by other contaminated foods, not raw milk.
A single of the more chilling information about RealMilk.com is their emphasis on feeding raw milk to infants, who are at the greatest risk of dying from infections. Their “Campaign for Real Milk” advocates
“universal accessibility to clean raw complete milk from pasture-fed cows, especially entry for pregnant and nursing mothers and for babies and developing children.”
We have a lot of good science about raw milk. CDC review of infectious illness outbreaks across the U.S. from 1993-2006 found that
“The price of outbreaks brought on by unpasteurized milk (often referred to as raw milk) and merchandise made from it was 150 times higher than outbreaks linked to pasteurized milk.”
Dr. Robert Tauxe, an infectious condition specialist at the CDC, debunks some of the myths about raw milk in an report freely available on Medscape. John Snyder and Mark Crislip have the two written compellingly about the dangers of raw milk at sciencebasedmedicine.org.
If I have been getting cynical, I might say that the wild-eyed proponents of raw milk deserve no matter what infections they get. But their young children really don’t. three-12 months-outdated Kylee Youthful, who the Washington Submit wrote about this previous Sunday, did not deserve to endure kidney failure and a stroke following her mom fed her raw milk that was contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Kylee can no longer walk or speak and requirements continual care. Her mother now says
“If I had identified what I know now, I would by no means have fed [raw milk] to my daughter.”
Louis Pasteur and his wife had 5 kids, three of whom died of childhood infections. These tragedies have been Pasteur’s determination for learning infectious disease. Thanks to his operate 150 many years ago, no 1 these days requirements to die from consuming unpasteurized milk. The raw milk motion insists, despite the evidence, that they know greater.
So go ahead, drink your raw milk and eat a paleo diet too, even though you are at it. But do not ask our contemporary health-related system to spend for your therapy when you get sick. And most of all, really don’t subject innocent youngsters to the needless hazards of raw milk.

The Well being Rewards of Raw Milk (and the Dangers of Processed Milk)
Until finally the early portion of the 20th century, raw milk – all-natural, untreated milk straight from the cow – was considered a medicine for a plethora of persistent illnesses. Even in the tropics, prolonged prior to refrigeration was invented, raw milk was an crucial and protected food supply for many cultures. It was regarded as “white blood,” a sort of “stem cell” of meals, and folks understood that in making an attempt circumstances, you could reside on it solely and continue to be flawlessly healthful. After all, just as eggs incorporate all the nutrients required to nourish a increasing chick, raw milk includes all the nutrients needed to nourish a increasing calf it requirements to be a near-ideal meals.
Beneath is a checklist of reasons why raw cow’s milk enjoys this kind of a positive, time-honored reputation. During the checklist, comparisons will also be created with processed (i.e. pasteurized and homogenized) milk.
A complete protein – Raw milk contains all 22 amino acids, like the eight important amino acids essential for the complete metabolism and perform of protein. This can make raw milk a ideal protein supply, and especially excellent for developing youngsters and bodybuilders. The proteins in processed milk, nevertheless, really do not fare as well. The milk’s biological value is diminished by 17 % since the heating process damages at least two of these amino acids (lysine and histidine). In addition, this injury to the amino acids’ identity negatively influences their absorption charge in the entire body.
Rich in nutritional vitamins – Raw milk is rich in body fat-soluble vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K – the entire vitamin spectrum. It is a specifically potent B vitamin complex, with all the significant B nutritional vitamins, from biotin to B12, represented. In handled milk, even though, nutritional vitamins A and C are fully destroyed (infants fed pasteurized milk solely actually produce scurvy), even though pasteurization destroys around 38 % of the milk’s all-essential B nutritional vitamins. Nutritional vitamins D, E, and K appear to survive the heating method.
Healthier fats – Raw milk is made up of all 18 fatty acids (saturated and unsaturated) that are metabolically obtainable to us, like conjugated linoleic acid, a significantly-required omega-6 fatty acid. These fats – which our bodies can not make themselves – help cellular metabolic process, the formation of healthy cell membranes, brain and endocrine system perform, and considerably a lot more. Processed milk, on the other hand, is a various story. Even though pasteurization is bad enough (it compromises the milk’s body fat content), homogenization – a truly unnatural approach that presses milk fats into smaller sized globules – actually oxidizes these fats, creating them carcinogenic and toxic to the body.
Bursting with enzymes – Raw milk is made up of more than 60 known enzymes that execute a multitude of duties in our bodies. Some of these enzymes, such as lipase, are native to milk and help us digest it properly. Other enzymes, this kind of as catalase, lysozyme, and lactoperoxidase, help defend the milk from bacterial infections. In taken care of milk, numerous of these enzymes are fully destroyed, such as lipase – the quite enzyme essential to digest milk effectively.
Rich in minerals – Raw milk contains a large quantity of metabolically-offered minerals. Some of these are well-acknowledged macro-minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, whereas others are important trace minerals such as iodine. Given that minerals operate in tandem rather than in isolation, disrupting the mineral compositions of entire foods such as milk can lead to several problems. And can you guess what takes place to handled milk? Yes having had its treasured minerals compromised by aggressive heating and pressing treatment options, the milk turns into toxic. Its total quantity of soluble calcium is specially impacted, and considering that phosphorus and magnesium need to have calcium to function appropriately (and vice versa), you can see how this dietary instability can result in a chain response of problems in our bodies.
Large in helpful cholesterol and carbohydrates – Raw milk contains about 3 milligrams of cholesterol (an critical fix substance) per gram, as effectively as decent amounts of soluble carbohydrates. The principal carbohydrate in cow’s milk is lactose, which makes up roughly 2-eight % of milk by fat. People with lactose tolerance are not able to make this enzyme, and as a result can not digest milk sugar. Even so, considering that raw milk (in contrast to taken care of milk) retains its lactose-digesting Lactobacilli bacteria, folks with lactose intolerance frequently have no difficulties drinking it.
The best sources of raw milk are regional organic farmers. Numerous natural farms have shops on their web sites via which you can buy raw milk on-line and have it delivered to your door (raw milk freezes properly, so bulk orders are not a problem). If you basically cannot entry raw milk, or if it is illegal in your nation/state, consider organic almond or coconut milk alternatively.

Baby boys and women must get distinct formula milk, claim scientists

Levels of nutrients in baby milk have effects on a child’s growth, behaviour and temperament that might final a lifetime. Photograph: Alamy
Child formula ought to be tailored for boys and girls to reflect the differences in milk that mothers make based on their baby’s intercourse, researchers say.
Tests on mothers’ milk in both monkeys and people have showed that levels of body fat, protein, nutritional vitamins, sugars, minerals and hormones fluctuate enormously, but there is evidence that milk made for female and male babies is constantly distinct.
The make-up of the milk has a direct influence on the child’s development, but also on his or her behaviour and temperament, which might last for the rest of their daily life. Scientists suspect that breast milk could be tailored by nature to meet the diverse development demands of the sexes.
The findings have led some researchers to suggest that little one formula need to come in boy and girl formulations to match the distinctions observed in breast milk.
“We have good explanation to be sceptical of a one-dimension-fits-all formula,” stated Prof Katie Hinde, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard University.
Speaking at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago, Hinde described her operate in rhesus monkeys that showed mothers produce milk with 35% far more excess fat and protein for male babies, and even richer milk when the male was 1st-born.
But when mothers fed female infants, their milk was significantly less fatty and had far more calcium, most likely to assistance the quicker growth of their skeletons. Mothers developed a lot more milk overall for females, and in excess of the program of their breast feeding, they obtained the exact same volume of body fat as the males.
“The recipes for milk for sons and daughters could be diverse, and the variation could be higher depending on where the mom is at in her reproductive career,” mentioned Hinde.
“Boys and ladies have various developmental trajectories, so if they are not acquiring what they need to have, their growth will not be optimal.”
In one more study, Hinde looked at levels of the pressure hormone cortisol in mothers’ milk and how they affected the babies’ behaviour. The research builds on previous function in people that found milk with larger concentrations of cortisol made infant girls much more irritable and more difficult to calm down.
Hinde measured ranges of cortisol in breast milk for 108 little one monkeys at a single month previous, and later on when the animals have been three or 4 months old. She found some subtle but important variations. Female monkeys grew to become more nervous when cortisol was large early on in their breast feeding. Male monkeys behaved more nervously when cortisol rose in excess of time.
Taken with each other, the perform suggests that mothers make breast milk in a different way for male and female babies, and that male and females react to the milk they drink in their personal ways.
Hinde said far a lot more work was necessary to understand not only how and why milk varies for boys and girls, but also why constituents of milk impact them in different ways.

Don"t Have A Cow! Here is How To Select The Greatest Milk For You
No matter whether we’re pouring it into our cereal bowl, including it to our coffee, or consuming it straight from the glass, we all have preferences in the kind of milk we drink. Perusing the dairy aisle at the neighborhood supermarket shows just how many options we have when it comes to previous-fashioned cow’s milk (not to mention lactose-free and non-dairy possibilities like soy, almond, rice, and coconut milks), but most of us really don’t invest much more than a few seconds choosing which carton to grab.
Regardless of assortment in body fat content, a cup of cow’s milk is packed with eight grams of protein, 12 grams of carbohydrates, and 300 milligrams of calcium (that is virtually a single-third of our everyday advisable value!). Milk is also substantial in numerous other minerals and nutritional vitamins such as potassium, phosphorous, and B vitamins, and it is one particular of the couple of foods sources that is rich in Vitamin D (due to fortification), which we normally get from sunlight [1]. But with all people widespread positive aspects, are there distinct perks related with consuming whole, skim, one% or 2% milk?
What’s the Deal?
Whole milk (three.25% unwanted fat) is what comes from the cow just before processing, even though reduced-fat milk (two% body fat), low-excess fat milk (one% body fat), and fat-cost-free or skim milk (% excess fat) undergo processing to remove extra body fat that comes from the cream. Apart from the obvious variation in taste, entire milk and reduced-body fat or skim milks differ in their unwanted fat, nutrient, and calorie material.
Of the 4 alternatives, total milk has the highest volume of saturated unwanted fat and calories, with all around 150 calories (compared to skim milk’s 90 calories) and 4 grams of saturated body fat per eight-ounce serving. While total milk has more saturated body fat, this is not automatically a bad thing — more and more research suggests saturated excess fat could not actually be unhealthy. Complete milk does incorporate much more cholesterol per eight-ounce serving — 24 milligrams of cholesterol compared to skim milk’s five milligrams, but some studies have found that total milk may not increase total cholesterol, and might actually raise great HDL cholesterol levels [two] [3] [four]. Even now, offered the conflicting current investigation, and the truth that most diet plans have loads of sources of excess fat and cholesterol, most doctors recommend generating the switch from complete to minimal-body fat or skim milk.
Creating low-unwanted fat and excess fat-free milk involves skimming the cream from whole milk out of the last item. However, body fat-soluble nutritional vitamins D, A, E, and K (which are discovered in the milk unwanted fat) go along with it. As a result, diminished-fat, minimal-excess fat, and skim milks include decrease quantities of numerous nutrients, but milk companies (even some natural manufacturers!) have figured out how to add these vitamins back in for the duration of processing to fortify the final solution with nutrients, notably vitamins A and D. Some manufacturers also improve their item with powdered milk solids to obtain the thick, white texture we’re accustomed to seeing (considering that body fat-totally free milk is naturally blue-tinted and pretty watery). Fortification guarantees that reduce-body fat milks are nutritionally related to whole milk and can stay a important supply of nutritional vitamins in the diet plan. Irrespective, complete milk proponents argue that fat-soluble nutritional vitamins are not as simply absorbed without the milk excess fat present.
The Answer/Debate
Several research show that lower-fat or non-excess fat cow’s milk can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis and sort 2 diabetes, delay natural menopause, and even reduce the chance of high blood pressure [5] [6] [seven]. Given that reduce-fat milk is made up of fewer calories, it is typically touted as a meals that aids excess weight loss and the best milk alternative for individuals hunting to get rid of weight, but not everyone agrees [eight].
Choosing skim can shave a few calories off that daily latte, but entire milk may well really be more powerful for prolonged-phrase excess weight loss. The USDA recommends drinking three cups of fat-cost-free or low-body fat milk per day, but critics likeWalter Willett, MD, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health argue that this endorsement (specifically the emphasis on lower-unwanted fat milk) has been influenced by the American dairy market. Research from the University of Virginia actually exhibits an association between skim milk and weight obtain, notably in children — the current concept is that drinking greater-excess fat milk leaves individuals feeling satiated longer, so they expertise reduced cravings for other meals [9] [ten] [eleven] [twelve].
Plus, milk fat can give the immune method and metabolic process a boost, making milk with greater body fat material a source of unexpected physiological rewards [13]. For instance, the nutrients found in total milk can lessen the chance of infertility in ladies, reduce the possibility of colorectal cancer for males, and even assist construct muscle during the physique[14] [15] [16] [17].
The Takeaway
Choosing among complete, skim, or reduced-body fat milk is largely a matter of individual choice in terms of diet regime, use, and preference. Skim or lower-fat milk may possibly be a much better selection for people who are making an attempt to hit particular daily caloric goals or people who already obtain a good deal of unwanted fat from other meals in their diet. For individuals trying to gain weight, build muscle, or get a lot more natural nutrients, total milk helps make a whole lot far more sense. Each and every choice has both positive aspects and disadvantages, so choosing “the best milk” is much more about stability than one particular correct or incorrect decision — a small skim milk with cereal, some entire milk in a protein shake, and a dash of two% in a cup of coffee seems like a good compromise.
