Yeast Infection: Description, Causes and Treatment

What is Yeast Infection?

This kind of infection is most common among women. However, many remain ignorant or unaware of this medical problem. It is important to know the symptoms, dangers, and related conditions of yeast infection to be able to treat it early on. It is also necessary to determine the various causes of this disease to be able to avoid it before it even happens. Finally, it will be most helpful for any female person if she is also knowledgeable of the several possible treatments for yeast infection to be able to curtail it immediately.

Not many women are familiar with the term “yeast infection”. However, more women are probably aware of or have experienced previously the symptoms of this condition. The top three signs of having yeast infection are itching, burning and pain, and discharge (1). Itching of any part of the skin or body is usually caused by an infestation of foreign organisms such as fungi or bacteria in a particular area of the body. In the case of yeast infection, the affected portion is the vaginal part and the surrounding areas. The infection can cause intense itching that rashes or redness usually develop secondary to scratching. Another indication is a burning or painful sensation in that area especially when urinating. The skin in a woman’s vaginal part may already contain sores due to frequent scratching that when placed in contact with the acidity of urine may cause pain or a burning sensation. This feeling may be similar to that which is experienced when having urinary tract infection, however, they occur in different areas of the body. Lastly, some women report of having discharges that are usually described as odorless, white, and cheese-like. At other instances, a starch-like odor is said to be observed from the discharges.

Yeast infection itself is not considered as highly dangerous, however, it can be very irritating and disturbing especially among women who are already preoccupied with other responsibilities or tasks. On the other hand, like most infections, it is highly transferable to other individuals including the opposite sex. Certain conditions of the body may make it easier for a person to acquire this disease such as diabetes and use of antibiotics.

What causes Yeast Infection?

The scientific term for yeast infection is Candidiasis (2). This was derived from the yeast organism or fungus-like Candida that causes this condition. Fungus thrives in dark and moist areas such as the vaginal area of women. Certain health conditions such as pregnancy and diabetes make people, especially women, more prone to acquiring yeast infection. Pregnancy causes a change in the metabolic balance and vaginal acidity of women which is more favorable to fungus growth. Fungus are also known to thrive among individuals with high sugar levels such as in the case of people with diabetes and those with defects in sugar metabolism.

What are the treatments for Yeast Infection?

Medical doctors prescribe various oral medications such as Diflucan or fluconazole and topical treatments to cure yeast infection. But from experience, this suggestion never works as it does not address the cause of the infection. Additionally, the yeast becomes resistant to those drugs over time making the problem even worst (3). The key is to boost your immune system to handle the yeast overgrowth. One the ways we do it in the office is helping your body to get rid of the mercury present in the GI tract (4). Candida thrive in an environment consisting of sugar and toxins like mercury. Addressing these two points is critical to eliminate Candida once and for all. Too often, I see people coming in and tell me that they have tried everything to kill Candida in their body, but they never address the source of toxicity. In addition, when we kill Candida, mercury is being release in the blood stream, causing what people claim as being “die off”. Unfortunately, this newly released mercury is not being eliminated and accumulated in other parts of the body causing more issues. As you can see, doing a Candida cleanse is not that simple. Several factors must be addressed at the same for an efficient and complete elimination of Candida. This is performed by using herbs like garlic, pau d’arco, calendula, among others.

Why you Should Add this Tastey Booster Food, Nutritional Yeast, to Your Diet

By Karen Brennan, MSW, NC, BCHN®, Herbalist

Nutritional Yeast: What is it?

Nutritional Yeast is not a plant nor animal food but rather a fungus like mushrooms.  It is a good addition to a vegan, vegetarian, paleo, gluten free and dairy free diet.

I have Candida, I am avoiding foods that contain yeast, can I eat nutritional yeast?

The yeast you find in breads and beer is a live and active yeast.  Nutritional yeast comes in a dried flake form and is not an active yeast.  This means you cannot use it to make bread or beer but more importantly it will not lead to overgrowth of yeast/candida in the body.  Therefore, because it has been deactivated it cannot cause or contribute to candida. You may read otherwise on the web but nutritional yeast is safe to it.

What causes overgrowth of candida (healthy people will always have some candida) is a diet high in sugary/processed foods and drinks, antibiotic use and birth control pills to name a few root causes.  To learn more about what candida is, what are more causes, symptoms and more importantly, how to address it read this article

What are the Benefits of Adding this Food into my Diet?

  • Beta Glucan fibers found in nutritional yeast help to maintain the body’s defense against pathogens (this was found in a study in which participants consumed a spoonful daily)

  • Another study in which participants consumed one half a spoonful found that mood states improved and they had significant boost in feelings of vigor.

  • It is a great addition to vegan and vegetarian diets due to its protein and B vitamin content. It also has a cheesy taste so many use it to replace cheese in their diet.

  • It contains all nine essential amino acids.

  • It is a rich source of 14 minerals and 17 vitamins

  • It has antiviral and antibacterial properties

  • It may be useful for candida, chronic acne, diarrhea, and immune system support.

  • Athletes use it for an energy boost

How Do I use it in My Recipes?

You can add nutritional yeast to many dishes that you make.  Add it at the end to hot and cooked dishes as high temperatures may destroy the nutritional benefits of the yeast.  For instance, add some to your cooked chicken curry dish or to your favorite pasta sauce.

  • Sprinkle it on your stove topped cooked popcorn

  • Add it into hummus, pesto, pasta sauces and cold soups

  • Sprinkle onto your salads and cooked vegetables

  • Use it as you would use grated cheese

  • Add to bean and rice or whole grain dishes.

Recipes with Nutritional Yeast

Will my local Grocery Store Carry Nutritional Yeast?

  • Your local traditional grocery store may not but many are adding healthier options. For instance, many Walmart and King Soopers now contain nutritional yeast products. Whole Foods and other local natural grocery stores and vitamin shops should carry nutritional yeast.

  • Otherwise order online from www.thrivemarket.com, amazon or many other healthy whole foods or vitamin websites.

  • Because I only use a small amount per day I store mine in a glass jar in the fridge to maintain freshness. Otherwise, store in your pantry or cupboard. It should keep for up to 2 years.

What You Need to Know

  • Those with Gout may want to keep the amount to ½ a teaspoon per day due to its purine content

  • You may have heard that some nutritional yeast products contain lead. These brands have no detectable lead in them-Bob’s Red Mill, NOW, Bragg’s, Dr. Fuhrman, and Red Star.  However, no matter what the brand, it is safe to consume 2 tablespoons per day.

  • Some nutritional yeast products contain B12 while others do not. Read the label. If you are a vegan or vegetarian and avoid meats, it is still best to supplement with B12 in a methylated form. It is a myth that B12 is naturally found in nutritional yeast-it must be added in.

  • It does NOT contain MSG as you may hear this rumor. Yeast is a natural source of the umami flavor or natural glutamic acid.  The glutamic acid is bound to other amino acids. The glutamic acid that is MSG is not bound.  When you consume glutamic acid from real foods, your body controls how much is absorbed.  Excess glutamic acid is passed off as waste not stored in your body.  MSG that is added to fast food and processed foods is an excitotoxin that overexcites your cells.

Weird But Amazing Natural Remedies for Vaginal Yeast Infections

Let’s just straight to the point here: yeast infections suck. There is nothing more irritating, uncomfortable, and frankly embarrassing than being plagued by this itchy, painful, itchy, discharge producing, itchy, smelly – and did I say itchy? – malady. We need remedies, fast.

Whether it is the result of antibiotic use or weakened immunity, the symptoms related to yeast infections are persistent and unbearable. As such, effective short and long term solutions need to be implemented straight away for relief and ongoing wellness.

Yeast infections and vaginal thrush occur due to the overgrowth of the fungus Candida Albicans. It is increasingly common, and indicative of unbalanced micro-flora in the vaginal area. Conventional medical advice would tell you to use a hydrocortisone cream to battle the side effects, but this is only a short term solution, and often loses its efficacy with repeated use.

There is no need to rely on pharmaceuticals to restore a healthy vaginal environment.  Safe and effective – if unconventional, and surprising – alternative therapies can and do work, while protecting your body from harsh, destabilizing chemicals.

With sincere empathy for my fellow sufferers, I’m pleased to present my honest-to-goodness, personally tested, highly recommended, weird but amazing natural remedies for battling yeast infections and intimidating the itch.

Eliminate with Essential Oil Remedies

The quickest and easiest method of dealing with such unpleasant side effects as inflammation, pain, or itching is the application of essential oils.

The two I’ve used to greatest effect are organic lavender and tea tree oils. Both are armed with anti-fungal properties are going to fight the overgrowth of the harmful yeast pathogens, while protecting the delicate balance of flora .

While there are dozens of essential oils on the market, choose pure, organic sources, of the highest quality to ensure best results.

In acute cases, this remedy offers almost immediate relief – and when you are at your sister’s wedding, scratching yourself into oblivion isn’t a viable option, so it’s always handy to have a back-up plan.

How to apply:

You can administer this oil remedy in a variety of ways according to preference.

Here are my top three:

  1. Oil application: mix 1-2 drops of either essential oil with ½ teaspoons of coconut oil. Apply to affected area. Using the oil technique has the added benefit of soothing and moisturizing the inflamed tissue.

  2. Water application: same as above, only dilute the essential oil(s) with water.

  3. Soaked tampon: make a mixture of 4-5 drops of essential oil to 2 tablespoons of water or melted coconut oil. Soak a tampon in the solution. Insert as per usual. Change twice daily till symptoms subside.

A word of warning: these oils are highly concentrated and extremely potent; careless or excessive use can have an adverse effect, so be sure to proceed with due caution.

Garlic Remedies

Raw garlic is an essential component to battling yeast infections. It can be used internally and externally, offering powerful anti-fungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, and is even shown to be effective against parasites.

While eating crushed raw garlic offers numerous health benefits, the following approach to dealing with yeast infections is more palatable, but does require a pioneering mindset.

Inserting whole cloves of garlic into your vagina may sound like homespun voodoo insanity – but that is exactly what I am proposing you do. I wouldn’t blame you for hitch-hiking away from this advice as soon as possible. However, I also wouldn’t suggest such an outlandish tactic if I couldn’t personally attest to the results.

After a single application, you will realize the power of this seemingly questionable, yet powerful, natural remedy. This anti-fungal treatment basically ensures that the bad bugs are going to get it in the neck, and your natural balance will quickly be restored.

How to apply:

Always use fresh, organic garlic. Start by slightly scoring the outside of the peeled clove – this will allow the release of beneficial properties, without it being too overpowering.

Then, string your clove onto a strong piece of thread with a sterile needle, leaving plenty of extra string at the bottom; this will effectively create a tampon-like device (and if you think of this whole exercise like an alternative tampon, it is not nearly so scary as you first thought).

If you are shy, start with one clove; you can work your way up to three or four as you become more confident.

Insert just as you would a tampon; gently, letting your anatomy guide you. The farther up you go, the more secure it will be. Later, when you are ready to remove it, tug the string and you’re done. See? You’re a pro already.

Change twice daily, until symptoms subside.

Worried about a stray clove getting lost in the worst possible place? Women have been terrified of tampons going amiss in their vaginal cavity for decades; the truth is, it can’t happen, and strange hippie garlic remedies are no exception.

If you do lose track of a clove, do not panic. It will naturally ease its way down and out in a day or two.

Probiotic Remedies

While you are busy killing off all the yeasty yoiks in town, it’s crucial that you strengthen your defenses with a steady stream of probiotics at the same time. This is going to ensure that you recover quickly, optimize your bacterial balance, improve immune function, and prevent re-infection.

Additionally, bug balance contributes to a top-notch brain function, hormone happiness, and a strong gut – so there’s more reason that ever to get your fair share.

How to Apply:

There are three primary ways in which you can use probiotics to your greatest advantage, which can be explored separately or in combination.

  1. Eat: With delicious options such as kefir, kombucha, and fermented vegetables becomingly increasingly popular, you can buy and make healthful foods and drinks that are bursting with friendly flora.

  2. Supplement: You can buy probiotic supplements online or over the counter in most health stores. Look for strains with saccharomyces boulardii, which actively eats harmful yeasts.

  3. Vaginally: you have a couple of options here –

    • You can apply a soothing coat of probiotic rich milk kefir or plain yogurt to the inflamed tissue, and wear a pad for continued relief.

    • You can soak a tampon in milk kefir or plain yogurt and insert it for internal relief.

    • You can insert a probiotic capsule vaginally – the deeper the better. Over the course of the day, the gelatin capsule will dissolve and release healing flora.

When battling an active infection, the first port of call is simply dealing with the crashing distraction of the red, raw, burning, itching, angry symptoms. Secondly, and most importantly, is supporting your body’s long term wellness.

There are two natural supplements that have seen me through the darkness of disaster many times. By turfing out the pests good and proper, taking this extra step will provide lasting harmony and vaginal health.

Capryllic Acid

This is a coconut derived fatty-acid does all the heavy lifting when it comes to ridding the raiders.

Dose up to ensure that the excessive yeast cells are not only weakened, but killed. Thoroughly eradicating these beasties using safe methods is just good biological business sense. Restoring a healthy balance of microorganisms after an infection is essential for continued harmony.

Start taking at the first sign of symptom onset, and continue taking according to the label for 3-4 days after subsidence.

Monolaurin

Monolaurin, also derived from coconut oil is marketed as an overall immune enhancer, but is essentially a bio-film disruptor: this means that the tough-to-crack exterior of the unwelcome invaders is compromised, and far easier to combat.

Tough dudes that run the yeast business will likely need a good, old fashioned talking-to, and this will be your best shot at winning the negotiations.

Non-toxic and safe for both short and long term use, it’s an essential component to keeping your vulva vital.

Combine it with the anti-fungal muscles of caprylic acid, and this dynamic-duo will knock out even the toughest villains.

These remedies are likely to challenge your medical preconceptions and biological barriers; that’s OK. It took me a while to feel comfortable using this weird and wonderful approach. But, woman to woman, I guarantee you can ditch the itch and rock on with real life in no time flat.

Go on. Feel better

Weird But Amazing Natural Remedies for Vaginal Yeast Infections

The Finnish "rye-volution" commences in New York, with out wheat or yeast

In downtown Manhattan, a tall blond guy with high cheekbones and hooded blue eyes imitates a drug pusher, grumbling below his breath, “The initial a single is on me.”

It’s not so convincing in a Finnish accent or considering that the guy, Simo Kuusisto, is providing something healthier: bite-size pieces of his specific rye bread, topped with butter, cheddar cheese and a thin slice of cucumber.

“Give a sample and they are hooked,” he says.

Kuusisto is the baker and proprietor of Nordic Breads. He is striving to start what he calls a “rye-volution” the battlefield is at his Union Square Greenmarket stand, the place he is marketing Finnish bread beneath a banner studying, “Discover the Power of Rye!”

Any native New Yorker might regard this effort with skepticism. New York’s heritage involves the huge waves of Jewish immigration to the Reduce East Side, the place rye bread is the selected sheath for Reubens and scorching pastramis. What can a Finn teach New York about rye bread?

A lot, it turns out. New York City could see its collective rye bread belief technique rocked to its really core if Kuusisto’s program pans out.

What New Yorkers feel to be rye bread is typically created with only twenty% rye flour the rest comes from plain white flour.

This fact – sure to convert any wellness-aware New Yorker – gives Kuusisto what he needs to grow to be one thing like the Oprah of bread. As consumers lunge for samples of his rye, Kuusisto manages to engage the steady movement of people with ease, exchanging income for bread, dimples flashing on his face when he smiles. This defies the stereotype of the modest-speak challenged Finn. He eagerly sums up the numerous studies in Finland and Sweden that display rye – Ruis, the Nordic kind– has 4 times more soluble fiber than wheat when diabetics eat it, blood sugar amounts remain regular. It is wheat-free of charge and has no yeast.

He has a touch of the showman. Kuusisto has peppered the Nordic Bread’s internet site with the word “ryevolution” and his iPhone emails finish with “Sent from my ryePhone4” and “Connected with Rye-Fi”. He wears a customized made baseball cap featuring the Superman insignia on the front but with an “R” for Ruis and “NB” on the side for Nordic Breads, or “no bull”, he says proudly.

“Not as well numerous have ever tasted bread like this,” says Kuusisto.

He looks to be in the appropriate historical moment, the place the curiosity in normal food items has grown. The coarse, dark, labor-intensively chewy rye bread has been stealthily muscling its way into the city’s aggressive artisan bread industry.

That’s why Kuusisto, 47, appears like he is living an entrepreneur’s dream, avoiding most “obstacle programs”, as he says, on his way to greenmarket glory. Kuusisto arrived in New York City in 1987 to attend the French Culinary Institute then cooked at esteemed eating places like Swedish Aquavit, followed by two everlasting missions to the UN. While a staff chef, Kuusisto periodically baked Finnish rye basically due to the fact he missed the taste. Kuusisto kept his employees chef work although expanding Nordic Breads right up until 2013 he was confident Nordic breads was a viable enterprise and resigned.

Was he scared to walk away from a steady paycheck? “Yes”, Kuusisto states, lapsing into Finnish minimalism.

Thanks to his pushing at greenmarkets, his bread located its way to Entire Meals, and Dean &amp DeLuca takes four goods from the 200 samples they obtain per month according to Amina Cush, the retail advertising manager.

But trend only goes so far. Andy White, the Complete Food items bread buyer at the Tribeca location describes Kuusisto’s Ruis, which sells 4 modest rounds for $ four.95, as obtaining a cult following.

“It’s not a huge income maker,” says White and adds it’s a “pain in the butt” to carry since its short shelf lifestyle. “The rye consumers are equivalent to vegan clients – they are extremely vocal with demand but not with the wallet,” says White in a slightly resigned tone.

There are, naturally, nevertheless developing pains. Americans, even sophisticated ones, look to be mystified by the concept of actual bread, not optimized for shipping and giant markets.

His biggest challenge so far has been to persuade buyers that bread is allowed to be somewhat hard and have a short shelf daily life due to lack of preservatives.

“Some men and women consider bread need to be soft like Wonder Bread or Italian bread,” says Kuusisto.

He will get annoyed when likely consumers quiz him about how lengthy Ruis stays fresh.

“What type of fucking question is that?” Kuusisto asks rhetorically, likening it to asking how extended a tomato stays fresh, “Until it goes bad, so eat it ahead of!”

Certainly, Americans are Finnish rye novices. Sasu Laukkonen, the chef and proprietor of Chef &amp Sommelier, a Michelin-starred Helsinki restaurant who’s heard about Kuusisto’s Ruis says Finnish rye is ideal on it’s 2nd of third day.

“It has to be a bit … going type of gnarly to eat it,” explains Laukkonen, “Because if it’s also fresh, it is too moist, it has to dry a minor.”

Kuusisto does have a sense of humor, even though it just may well not be recognized as this kind of for the uninitiated. When the umpteenth green market consumer asks Kuusisto if there are seeds in the Ruis, he’ll sometimes feign ignorance: “What are you speaking about?” That prompts the client to earnestly make clear New York deli rye to the stone-faced foreigner, who ultimately smiles and laughs.

For all that most of his mail-purchase consumers have Scandinavian names, Kuusisto’s overhead is low. He rents area at Entrepreneur Area, a communal kitchen located on an industrial Lengthy Island City street and bakes at night.

Amid the smell of baking rye from the massive ovens and top 40 Latin pop blasting from a radio, flour dusted workers in hairnets, some American born, other folks Latin American immigrants, load rye rounds in and out of the ovens. The mood is critical and targeted. Clipboard in hand, Kuusisto intensely monitors the baking, cooling, slicing and packaging, providing guidelines in a minimum of phrases.

Nordic Breads has evolved in a regular, powerful, measured way. “One can bump one particular, two million into a business and build a factory, that’s another route. But who can do that?” muses Kuusisto.

Nordic Bread’s slow, non-flashy growth is very like “sisu”, the effectively-identified Finnish characteristic which approximately translates to determination and perseverance.

“It implies that if a Finnish man needs to go through a mountain, he will,” explains Kuusisto, noting with a laugh that right after all, they have been consuming rye bread all those many years.

The Finnish "rye-volution" commences in New York, with out wheat or yeast
