Holistic Dental Hygiene Tips

Did you know that there are ways to avoid expensive dental visits that involve fillings, drilling, and more? Holistic dentistry is becoming more and more popular, and for many reasons. Basically, you are in charge of your dental hygiene, and holistic dental hygiene is the safest way to keep your teeth healthy and beautiful. It all begins with good dental hygiene, and of course, regular visits to your dentist for checkups. Let’s take a look at the things you can do to maintain good oral hygiene, holistically.

Your Diet

First of all, it is important to always follow a healthy, well-balanced diet. The foods you eat greatly affect the health of your teeth and gums. A poor diet can lead to toxins or bacteria in your mouth, which will ultimately lead to dental problems. Simply changing your diet can lead to much healthier teeth and gums.

Oil Pulling

A rather new idea is oil pulling, which is simply rinsing your mouth with coconut oil for about 15 minutes. The oil is then spit out. Why is this process called oil pulling? Well, it is going to pull a lot of junk out of your mouth. It will pull away unhealthy microbes that get caught between the teeth and gums. Your teeth will look whiter, and feel a lot cleaner. You will also be less prone to oral inflammation. An added bonus is that this can even help to clear sinus congestion.

Tongue Cleaning

You need to clean your tongue when you brush your teeth in order to make sure that your mouth is completely clean. But, you shouldn’t just rely on the tongue scraper at the opposite end of your toothbrush. Instead, get a real tongue cleaning apparatus, which looks like a U-shaped wire that is held together with rubber grips. This will scrape your tongue and get rid of toxins. If you find that you often have a white coating on your tongue, you may also need to take probiotics to control yeast.

Salt Water Rinse

Whenever you do need to have a dental procedure, instead of taking harmful anti-inflammatory drugs, try a salt water rinse. You need to use warm water and pure sea salt (Himalayan sea salt works well for this). It will help to reduce inflammation after dental procedures by soothing the membranes of the gums. It can also alkalize the pH balance in your mouth, which helps to prevent the buildup of bacteria.

Flossing

In order to get rid of little food particles that get trapped between your teeth, you need to not only brush twice daily, but also floss as well. This is important if you want to get rid of plaque, have clean and healthy gums, and prevent cavities from forming, which will involve more trips to the dentist.

Mercury Fillings

If you have any mercury fillings in your mouth, it is time to get them replaced with silver or acrylic fillings. Mercury is not safe, and it can lead to a lot of different types of illness symptoms. You will need to find a holistic dentist who is trained in safely removing mercury fillings. Then, you should start cleansing gently by eating cilantro and other detoxifying foods.

Visit Your Dentist

No matter how well you take care of your teeth, problems can always crop up unnoticed. This is why you need to see your holistic dentist at least twice each year. Regular dental checkups can help to prevent dental issues, and if there are any issues, you will find out what needs to be done in order to treat them as soon as possible.
