Dying nicely

Stephen Sutton died with a courage that has inspired millions. The 19-yr-previous was diagnosed with bowel cancer four years in the past and determined to live what remained of his existence to the total. His “bucket list” included receiving a tattoo and writing a guide – but also raising funds for other men and women. Thanks to the support of celebrities and social media, 135,000 folks from all around the planet have donated a lot more than £3 million to his JustGiving webpage on-line. In a final tribute, the Prime Minister described Mr Sutton’s “spirit, bravery and fundraising for cancer research” as “an inspiration”.

His was an extraordinary illustration of what individuals can do if they are entirely cognisant of the end. Unfortunately, some folks are denied that self-awareness. A troubling new report indicates that in more than half of all cases, sick or elderly people are not informed by health care specialists that they are dying. And fewer than one in five patients is spoken to by personnel about no matter whether or not they ought to be provided a drip to give them with fluids and nutrients. Astonishingly, instruction in end-of-existence care is mandatory for physicians in only 19 per cent of NHS hospital trusts, and for nurses in only 28 per cent – contravening national guidance.

Failure to speak honestly and sensitively with a patient and his or her family about what lies ahead robs them of the opportunity to prepare themselves for death. Of course, the exceptional issues that Mr Sutton completed are beyond the dreams of most of us. But there can be, at the minute when life winds down, a poignant opportunity to reflect, to invest time with loved ones and to put together correctly for our passing. It is a precious right that Mr Sutton employed to amazing, admirable advantage – a appropriate that no one particular need to be denied.
