“He picks up an additional glass containing a little sum of water and the goldfish, which is swimming around, and demonstrates it to the camera ahead of drinking it down, and following it with the pint.
“A vet report suggested that the stomach would be a totally unsuitable location for a goldfish and that the fish would have died in time, the result in of death becoming a mixture of suffocation and acid pH ranges in the stomach, as well as the alcohol he drank.” Hope informed investigators that he had owned the goldfish for a couple of months, and believed it was ill as it stored swimming into the sides of its tank. He was going to flush it down the lavatory but made the decision to drink it instead.
He admitted failing, on or about Jan 31, to meet the demands of a goldfish by failing to defend it from soreness, struggling, injury or illness by drinking it. He was ordered to shell out a £300 fine, £30 victim surcharge and £431.17 costs.
In mitigation, the court heard that it had been an impulsive act which would not be repeated and of which he was ashamed.
Mr Charlton said: “Eating a live animal and posting a video of it on the internet for entertainment is not some light-hearted joke.
“The RSPCA takes the use of animals in these ‘Neknominate’ issues very significantly. We urge people not to involve animals in this horrible craze and to report to us anyone who is, on our cruelty line 0300 1234 999.”
