81-year-old patient "left in agony as physician played on computer"


Her son, Gary, 52, went to request for pain relief but was advised that the medical doctor in the corridor, who was ‘playing on a computer’, was ‘not on this morning’, her inquest was informed.




Right after two hours of extreme discomfort, Mrs Gray was lastly provided morphine. She died a couple of weeks later of complications from the surgery.


Her daughter, Susan Carter, told the inquest at Manchester town hall that she believed her mother ‘could be alive’ nowadays if not for hospital errors.


Coroner Nigel Meadows, recording a narrative verdict, stated that Mrs Gray died from multi-organ failure following problems following bowel surgical treatment, but also mentioned a quantity of failures in nursing care.


Mr Meadows stated: “I can see… a variety of failures in nursing care. It can not be said they had been physically a result in of her death. The pathologist is saying the perforation of her bowel led to multi-organ failure.”


A 41-web page hospital report showed lapses in nursing care in nutrition and hydration, soreness management, infection prevention and record-keeping. The inquest was advised that the report showed the hospital had taken the situation seriously.


After the inquest, Mrs Gray’s son Gary stated: “It’s a catalogue of mistakes and only tells us what we already knew, but perhaps the hospital will find out for potential households.”


A hospital spokesman mentioned: “Mrs Gray was provided discomfort relief immediately following her procedure and a medical professional was then named to provide a more powerful painkiller and attended to Mrs Gray an hour-and-a-half later. An additional doctor who was present on the ward at the time was from a going to speciality and not acquainted with Mrs Gray.”
